Basically a new Senate Bill backed by Joe Lieberman was passed to give President Obama the ability to shutdown the entire Internet and Worldwide Web only in the event of a Cybersecurity attack.

IMO I think this is a really horrible idea and just seems like another attempt of the U.S. Government trying to gain power over the internet limiting people's free speech, freedoms, as well as businesses on the internet.

The Internet is also the backbone of worldwide society as shutting it down would cause mass hysteria and catastrophe.
 
I don't see the point in it. Why is this needed so much? If there's a virus circulating on the web, just make sure no one gets infected (put the infected systems in some sort of quarantine). Also, giving people more information on the kind of webpages/emails they should or shouldn't open would help out alot too. Viruses only spread because of those fools.
 
Wow whoever even thinks of this is insane no internet would cause mass chaos in so many ways, I guess this is another big red button for the president. (If this somehow ever happens OFF TO CANADA LOL)

No it's not, this also kills Pokemon Video Game Competitive play and Smogon. Infact this would also kill Google, YouTube, and eBay as well. I can already see how nobody would be able to trade or sell stuff online cause of this and people quiting TCG/CCG's completely cause they couldn't get the stuff they need alot easier.

This would hurt ourselves besides our enemies. Companies like Microsoft and Apple would be out of business because of this. This is like anti-net neutrality at it's worst for the sake of protecting our country from terrorism, you're only making things worse out of an even worst case scenario.
 
I doubt that it's true. There would be more outrage. Plus, it's not possible. Obama, and America for that matter, does not control the internet. Even if they did, it's not something you can just shut down.
 
I don't know how much I believe this. This is exactly what China does to it's people or too eerily close to it. The Internet is like the Wild West. It's the last free place in the world.

Well if there is a Cyber attack the internet should be shut down. It can be restored, but this would probably just shut it down for a little time.

I think you're a bit overreacting. This is only if there is some SERIOUS cyber attack on the internet. They do shut it down so they can fix the problem, wouldn't that be a good thing? My goodness, who cares if you couldn't get your cards for ONE DAY. Aren't you happy your Internet and computer will still be functional?

And just because they have this power doesn't mean they're going to shut it down whenever there is a minor crisis. When they say "shut down the internet", they don't mean permanently. It'll be online when the problem is over. I'd rather be safe without internet than unsafe with Internet and when theres some sort of virus that could steal my personal information. :/
 
The Internet Kill Switch sounds like a bad band.

I highly doubt that they will give Obama that much power. If a virus is that large then Im sure they can find a cure. This also would be bad for economy and education. Peoples online businesses would go bad and lose money, and peoples cyber schools would go down too. I think this "button" wont happen.
 
We know it's not a joke, and that doesn't mean we can't joke about it.

Anyhow, it sounds pretty fishy. I can hardly see a president like Barack shutting down the internet, mainly because he seems to be the most technology-dependent president we've ever had. Not that he uses the internet for much anything - I haven't the foggiest of whether he does or not.

I also don't know about him responding so drastically to it, especially with his reponse time to U.S.' most recent gulf oil spill problem.

Whatev. We'll see how it goes.
 
As for Obama being the most technologically dependant U.S. President, he does own his personal
Blackberry (no racist pun intended).

Well at least someone sees the major downside to this Bill If it gets passed by the Senate. I found some more info regarding it here:

I think when you meant by cyber schools you mean like not stepping out of your house for college work on the PC.
