That is a portal that Jeb showed in one of his Live Streams.

Apparently you need to fill it with Ender Eyes to get it to work. (In the pic only two portal blocks are filled)

You can find these portals in Strongholds behind a Silverfish spawner.

These portals are the ones that will take you to 'The End' (Most likely)

From my understanding, 'The End' works, but Dragons will not spawn. (Confirmed by Jeb)

Nope, just Obsidian pillars, and Ender Sand.

Apparently, it's not done yet, and there is no way out (other than dying).

Let's hope there will be dungeons and ores there! :)

Try throwing an Ender Pearl while you are there (it only works in Survival/Hardcore). It has been rumored to set up a portal to send you back to the Overworld.

About time, too, before the price goes up again!
I'm doing pretty well in two of my 1P Survival worlds. In one, I sporned in a forest and managed to find what I now know to be confirmed as an Abandoned Mineshaft, as I have mentioned before. In the newer one, I sporned right next to an NPC Village. :>
 
Found my first Diamond gems today, along with 4 stacks of Redstone, a stack of Iron Ore, a stack of Coal and some small amounts of Gold and Lapiz.
So, I am a very, very happy guy today. :>
Plus, I have the normal version now, so yay. Good day for me. Anyone else make a good discovery?
 
I read about an enchantment that allows you to harvest the very block that you are mining.

For example, when mining stone, you will get the stone block back, and not Cobble.

You can get the diamond ore block, and not the diamond (which BTW can be smelted into a diamond).

You can get the Redstone ore block, and make an epic floor.

You can get Bookcases back.

You can get ice, grass, and you can get stairs back too.

But the coolest thing is you can get Mob Spawners back. :O Unfortunately when placed, they only spawn pigs. But still, infinite bacon anyone? :)
