Using certain tools and equipment, they're able to look inside the game data.
I can't give you a more detailed answer, because that stuff is illegal.

While they can be cool, they really do make the game more luck based than it has to be. Sure its fun if its just a casual battle, but its not right for competitive battles.

With Smash Balls, whoever breaks it open first gets a (possibly massive) advantage. Brawl's not really a balanced game, and introducing Smash Balls into competitive play would only worsen things.

Its because Nintendo wasn't focusing on making it a fair and competitive game. They just wanted a game where you can have fun playing with classic characters and using their classic moves, and they achieved that. ^_^

Yeah I'm pretty sure the point was to make the game fun(duh). And the smash balls are pretty fun to play with. They gave a function to take it off if your not playing for fun. I think(hope) they'll keep the smash ball.

Or, scrap Phantom and let her transform into Tetra instead. Tetra never really had many powers though. I just think since Toon Sheik doesn't exist, it should be replaced when playing as Toon Zelda.

I don't really have any opinions on SSB 3DS other than the fact that I'm very skeptical about how it's going to work. SSB just seems like it would work on a console better than a handheld, but Nintendo's known for being the crazy guys with the wacky ideas so who knows, maybe it'll be pretty slick.
Don't expect a slew of third-party characters, either. Brawl has 35 characters and only two made the cut; Sonic because he's immensely popular, and Snake because he was begged to be included (in Melee, actually, but the request came too late in the game's development). Yeah, it'd be neat, but I'm thinking no more than five 3p characters. Maybe even three.
As a Mega Man fan, though, I would like to see him in SSB. I think that if there are any more Sonic characters to included, it will most likely be either Shadow, Tails, or Eggman.
What about obscure Nintendo titles? Pit was a mystery pretty much everyone under the age of 20 until Brawl came out, and now he's getting his own game for the first time in 20 years. (aside: I don't care if you are under 20 and knew who Pit was, I'm making a generalization here so don't point it out just to prove me wrong.)

Yeah! She's got bombs, a cannon, and she's a pirate (so she probably has a dagger). It would be awesome to play as a Pirate.
