TPCi Promises to Print More “Prismatic Evolutions” Amid Unusual Demand

New? No one said new. Standard format cards? Yes. Scalpers wouldn’t waste their time or money on special art cards that are not the standard format… and neither would you.
Yes, they absolutely would. The cards aren't expensive because they're standard legal. They're expensive because all the "Investors" don't want to miss out on the new Moonbreon.

And I do spend money on cards not in the standard format, why wouldn't people? That's why Evolving Skies and Fusion Strike were hit so hard last year.

And scalpers went hard on celebrations when that released, not because of the standard legal cards.

The playability of the cards is irrelevant to the value of the sealed product or individual cards. Maybe a few people who play max rarity buy expensive cards, but the real driver of the price is “investors” and an influx of new collectors. Players are not buying sealed product. The cards they buy are very inexpensive.

You're completely clueless about this, like others have already said. This is not Magic, playability is the least of our problems, everything that sees play eventually gets printed into oblivion. What really drives value on sealed Pokémon product is the collectable aspect, people actually collect the cards. For instance, the amount of people I know that collects every alt art from every set is insane, no other tcg can touch Pokémon regarding this aspect, and that's why it's always the same type of products that have availability issues, and why it's almost never because of the gamepieces in them (last time this happened was with Roaring Skies I think, with Shaymin-EX, since then, if you wanna play the game and you're fine playing with minimum rarity possible for the cards, it's the most affordable TCG out there, by a long margin).

Hopefully they really mean this with their full chest. I see statements like this and just remember that yes they technically printed more of the Van Gogh Pikachu after they promised that too, but it wasn't enough and barely moved the needle in terms of price/scalping.
It's the law of Induced Demand, unfortunately. Product gets popular > people get in and buy them out > stocks are low > they print more stocks > more people get in and buy them out > stocks are low > repeat

If their solution is just Print More Product then the scalper issue isn't going to get solved, because the scalpers will just Buy More Product. More than the average casual collector/player can and will.

This is only true to a certain point. There is an amount that even scalpers won't scalp because it exposes them to way too much risk. There was even a point where Evolving Skies was available for way under MSRP. There is always a way to print to meet demand. The only "problem" with this is that printing too much drives "investors" out of the hobby in the long run, because cards and products are no longer scarce. And "investors" are likely generating a big percentage of TPCi's profits.

I'm in Australia, and I don't have much faith that this will have any discernible impact on availability down here. TPCi simply doesn't prioritize the Australian market. The first month that Surging Sparks was out distributors had enough stock to keep shelves sometimes stocked. Then absolutely nothing. It will be even worse now.
