Yes, it's true. Today it was announced that Barack Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples".

So....what a joyous occasion for President Obama and his family (and country as well!)

Anyways, now onto the point of discussion!

Discussion Topics:

1. Did he deserve it?

2. What effect do you think this will have on the US? The World?

3. This was clearly a very big surprise seeing as the deadline for nominations was February 1st- just after Obama became president. Just how amazing is this event?

Whoo Obama! - Sorry, couldn't resist!

Great choice. Obama has put in an extraordinary amount of effort to promote peace. Obama most certianly deserved it. Maybe people might stop criticizing Obama.

1. Did he deserve it? I honestly barely know what he did, but if he helped the cooperation between people then he definately deserves it.

2. What effect do you think this will have on the US? The World? Easy. Helps prevent any wars and conflicts.

3. This was clearly a very big surprise seeing as the deadline for nominations was February 1st- just after Obama became president. Just how amazing is this event? Getting the Nobel Peace Prize is indeed a huge event. But now? I would've waited until at least after February 1st before he got it... because I think so many people would be wondering about this topic.

I haven't seen any of the fruits of his efforts yet, and feel this was really premature. It would be like giving the Superbowl ring to the Vikings just because they haven't lost a game yet. The season is still going on, and they haven't finished.

I thought you had to DO something to GET something...

Did ACORN count the votes or something?

I wonder how much money our nation is going to spend to publicize this and allow him to obtain this award he has done nothing worthy to receive it.

Seriously, before I go any further, what exactly has he done to help the country? He might as well come out and say "o wait i lied im not rly gonna lower ur taxes or do nythin to stop war on terrur but im gona tak this shiny prise"

The guy didn't deserve it. Even HE said he didn't deserve it.

This is just a bunch of crappy Obama hype all over again. Look, just because he's black doens't make him some super hero like half the world seems to think. :/

1. No. He's done nothing so far, this is way to early. I also think that it's pathetic that he was nominated at a time when he'd been in office less that a month.
2. I think this will make things worse in the long term. It may help him at first, but once people stop idolizing him, they'll use this to mock him, and I doubt the crazies like Iran and North Korea will care at all.
3. This event is an amazing failure, I would've thought those giving out the nobel peace prize would look for acheivements, not promises.

Yes but almost all of us categorise Blacks and whites differently not collectively as a human race. There wasn't much competition really. He is the first black president >.>

What did Barack Obama do to deserve it?
And DarthPika you basicly sumed up this entire conflict he's black we solved this problem years ago.
And if you still think people are racist, some are but marjority isn't because he's the president.

Yes, people ARE racist. That's why he's president. People voted for him JUST because he's black.

DarthPika, if you think everyone that voted for Obama just because he's black... I'm refraining myself from flaming you here.

1. Depends. Like previous people have said, it's way too early to give it to him.
2. I'm not sure.
3. I don't know.

I think that while this may be premature, that dosent make Barack Obama any less deserving.....he's one of the ONLY world leaders I've seen to even make peace and nuclear arms reduction a goal in his administration.

I thought that the speech he directed towards the Muslim World in Egypt was very well done and made me hopeful for a better relations in that region, not only between countries in that region, but between that region and the rest of the world.

As the article mentions (I dont know how many of you have read it), he also did many things to try and reduce nuclear arms. He has handled North Korea's nuclear situation well so far in my opinion, as well as the recent Iran nuclear testing.

The main point of giving Obama the NPP is to commend the fact that he's really trying to make things better here....if anyone in the world can do it, I think he can. But seriously guys, on top of EVERYTHING he's been juggling so far....the two wars, the economy/bailout, the national health care debate, the education initiatives he has tried to start, and the fact that we're in the largest deficit in US History really tells something about this guy.....he's got his plate full and is adding more to make an impact in the short time he has to make a difference.....while I think he's trying to do too much, I commend his actions so far and think he is more than deserving of this award for his work so far in world diplomacy and nuclear reduction policies, regardless of what he does from now on.

I have faith in him but I honestly think this could have waited a few years. Honestly I feel this just gives Republicans the go-ahead to say that it's still just hype and he hasn't done a ton of fixing yet. Which may be true but they'll use that to say he isn't going to do anything.

Personally, I don't believe Obama deserves it.

I'm not racist, nor do I promote racism, but I do feel that the many factors that Obama is receiving so much attention and even got elected. Personally, I believe that all men, women dogs, cats, ETC. are created equal. However, Obama is being treated like the underdog, when he really isn't.

Now for the award, there is no reason he should have it.

"Putting up an environment of piece?" Yeah, right. Basically, he's keeping peace but not declaring war on anyone. Or doing anything, actually. Frankly, Obama is too new to the system to be our president.

Sorry if I offended anyone.

I don't believe that everyone did. I KNOW that many did. Not everyone, but many.

Haha B-Ray I'm sure you know how I feel about this, but hey...agree to disagree am I right =D

1. Did he deserve it? - I don't see anything to justify the fact that he deserved this. He's been in office not even a year, he hasn't done much besides give away large amounts of money and try and stimulate the economy. The unemployment rate is still the highest in 25 years. Not a whole lot else, began healthcare reform, thats about it. I heard somewhere, I think it was the today showsaid that the reason he won, reported by the Nobel Peace Prize committee (not 100% sure whether it was official, but it was a reason), this morning (Not a conservative talk show like Fox News that I know you guys would automatically jump on me for watching). Regardless, the was because of what he has the ability to do and what he can do. Haha what? Because of his ability to change things, and that catchy slogan that always involves Change, is really no reason to give him an award. If he was given the Peace Prize at the end of his term after he's radically improved the US, I'd be fine with that. Right now it's premature and the Nobel Peace Prize should not be a popularity contest.

2. What effect do you think this will have on the US? The World? This worries me, I'm dead serious. He's gaining more and more power every day, becoming more and more popular. If he said "Jump" a large amount of the world would respond, "how high?". I don't care if you are republican or a democrat, someone should not have this much influence over a world power like the US especially when it's growing and he is becoming a major world influence. He wields to much power, that's just scary. Him winning the Nobel Peace Prize is just furthering this, and expanding his influence.

3. This was clearly a very big surprise seeing as the deadline for nominations was February 1st- just after Obama became president. Just how amazing is this event? I wasn't aware of that fact. So he was nominated for what...running a campaign? Being elected as President? Having thoughts and making promises of change? That's just not right, I'm sorry.

I'm going to respond to some of your comments Andrew, just because I see some things wrong with them. All in good spirit of course :D

He made it a goal, not deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize. Yes, it's a good goal, but not worth a Nobel Peace prize, it's just a goal.

I thought that the speech he directed towards the Muslim World in Egypt was very well done and made me hopeful for a better relations in that region, not only between countries in that region, but between that region and the rest of the world.

He is a very good public speaker, I have to admit. But a speech, that just again doesn't make it worth it. Nobel Peace Prize were given to the greatest thinkers in all of history, and Barrack Obama is good with speech, but that doesn't make it worth it. The speech was well done, but I wouldn't call it groundbreaking.

Do, or Do not, there is no try. When I say I live by that a lot of you are probably going to laugh at me, but that's a philosophy I believe in. He's trying, but he could fail utterly at the end of his term. It wouldn't be right for the Nobel Peace Prize committee to say "good job, you tried, here take more fame and a million bucks, do you want a hug?" Dramatization of course, but Obama could turn out to be a huge failure, he could become stupid, un-realistic, or anything within the next three years. He has a shot, but thats about it right now. Napoleon Bonaparte was seen as a great leader and exactly what France needed back then, but towards the end he was just stupid, and was his own downfall. How do we know that won't happen to Obama? We don't, at the end of his term if he was great, give him a Nobel Peace prize, I'm all for that. Now, now it's just popularity.

I wasn't aware of Obama doing anything to deem him worthy of winning the Nobel Peace Prize, let alone receiving a nomination...

I think I would've liked to have seen him receive the prize not as soon because you never know what could happen because Obama has only been president for less than a year. I'm glad to see that he's modest which makes him deserving but all I can say is that it would be easier to judge if he was the right candidate for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize if time lingered on and we could see more of his actions. Regardless, I'm happy for him and his family. It's one of the most spectacular honors in the world. As a side note, Racial discrimination still occurs in our world today. People have been arguing if it has been solved or not. It has been solved in my opinion, but a small majority still acts prejudice. It's sad that people act that way. It's more important to base a person of his or her acts, not a biological factor.

Wow, I didn't even know the President could get the Nobel Peace Prize in the first place. ;p Regardless though, he was probably the best candidate. He has one of the toughest jobs in the world. Cut him some slack. Sure, it's a little early, but why not. He's giving the money to charity anyway. On one side, people don't get why he should've gotten it, but on the other, people shouldn't have seen this as surprising. He has done a lot of talks overseas with other countries. At least he's tried his best.

dmaster out.
