What about the Death Penalty?

What about it? In the past, I used to think it's ridiculous. But now, sometimes I think of it, I actually catch myself considering the possibility of it being useful. Totally uncomfortable and awkward feeling, believe me. But it happens.
So, discuss! What do you think?

RE: Death Penalty

Bad mentality, but admittedly, its human nature to think about it. I think that the right thing is to not allow it anywhere.

RE: Death Penalty

In oregon we are pushing for a bill that doesn't allow death penalty.

RE: Death Penalty

I feel that if a person decides to kill another person, the same should be done to them. Also, why would you want to keep a murderer sitting in prison, where you have to pay to feed them and pay for the plumbing in the jail.

RE: Death Penalty

I would allow it. We'll spend less money building new prisons to hold prisoners that are currently overcrowding pennitentaries.

RE: Death Penalty

I really don't agree with it. Every life should be precious. Unless he wants to die, I don't think that person should die. Doesn't matter who (s)he is or what (s)he did. Leaving him in prison for ever is better IMO.

But you have to think practically here. Would you want to pay for the costs of a person living inside a prison? It would get very expensive pretty quickly.

"Let's kill people because we have no money!"

You can't give a value to life. I know many people do but I don't think Governments should be the examples.

RE: Death Penalty

I find this topic has lots of ethical issues that come up. Hammurabi once said "an eye for an eye" in Hammurabi's Code, but does that mean everyone thinks that way? No. In ancient times, like Legalist China, a person would get tortured or killed just for something as simple as not paying his taxes on time. Now, for someone to be put to death (if the death penalty was legalized), I'm sure he would have to murder more than one person to be considered for it. Clearly communities these days are much more sensitive to such drastic measures, so do I think it would be legalized? I'm not so sure.

RE: Death Penalty

The only reason of why it should be done is if he still oppose a mayor threat to other people's life.

RE: Death Penalty

If he is locked up in prison then I'm pretty sure he isn't of any major threat to anyone else's life, unless he escapes or is released and still hasn't changed.

Edit: To clarify I am not against or for the death the penalty, I was just saying I am doubtful of anyone implementing the law. So you could say I'm against it because I'm not hopeful of it being passed.

RE: Death Penalty

I'd rather die fast and painlessly than spend the whole rest of my life in prison... also saves money.

Being stabbed with a needle isn't painless?

RE: Death Penalty

You can take drugs that kill the cells in your body instead of being stabbed. It's actually painless.

RE: Death Penalty

I'm against the death penalty because you could execute the wrong person. Even if there's no doubt that a person is guilty, executing them won't solve anything. It's not going to bring back the victim.

Depends on what kind of needle you use... lol

Have you ever been vaccinated? The needle doesn't hurt at all.

RE: Death Penalty

Don't turn my awesome ethical topic into a vaccination discussion :).
Honestly, the death penalty seems extreme to me. But on certain cases, such as those lunatics who enter a school with a Kalasnikov and wreak havoc, the sentence sounds appealing. But I can't say for sure.

RE: Death Penalty

I think it should only be allowed in extreme circumstances. Basically, in the case of someone who is a serious threat to society (as in, kills other people) and will never change their behavior.
