Why do people hate on droppers?

Okay, do it in BR's or maybe City's, but don't do it in States or Regionals. Never do it in Nationals and obviously not Worlds. And only do it if there are tough matchups waiting for you in Top.

I've actually seen a few people drop with 4-0 or 5-0 in States. The option is there in case it's needed, and in a highly competitive meta, keeping a spotless win record is by no means easy. A single loss could cost you heavily.

^^^

Chris Fulop another example here, and Ohio states last year, he was the last undefeated left at 5-0 and he dropped. I guess in theory some people benefit from it by having a better chance to top, but its still a semi-shady way to make it to worlds. ELO Rating system is what screwed this up

I couldn't tell you. I guess cuz they're more in to having fun than having a good POP record, but you can play at home. I dunno. It bothers me too though.

But having a good rating is fun! Have you ever been to worlds? It's way more fun than a few top cut rounds at States. Plus the prize support sucks at States. I'm sure if you win States, you are a good player and have everything you need, so the box for maybe winning is not worth a chance to get the invite.

The Three Hundred Dollars is worth the risk though, at least for me and LORDY, because that will be the only way will get to go to Nats...

Well, I go to tourneys to play, so dropping isn't for me personally. But I respect the idea, and don't think it's really something to complain about.

I don't like it when players drop unless there is something like an emergency or they have to leave for work. The Pokemon TCG is supposed to be about fun; it is not about winning. I know I some of you who think otherwise but consider this: If a game ceases to be fun, it will die out. The game was created so players could get together and have a good time. I don't play in Regionals anymore; I judge Regionals in my area, same with MN States. I even chose to be VGC Staff at Nationals even though I could've played either the TCG or VGC. I also don't understand how top cut games would affect your ratings more than any other game. It is still the same K Value and uses the result of the match, not individual games. I really think that if you drop from a tournament you should get a loss for the next round first since you aren't completing the event or some other effect that would alter your rating.

Honestly, it's not a bad thing. It's strategic. If you go X-0, and you're guranteed an invite, then why not take it? You worked hard to go X-0 anyways. I mean, it's one thing if you go 2-0 and drop, but if you go 5-0 or 6-0, and then drop before top cut, that's a lot of points you don't want to risk loosing. It's like kneeling down at the end of a football game. The offensive team doesn't want to risk a fumble or an interception, so they kneel down.

It would feel like an empty victory to me to just drop after going X-0.
I don't get to play often anymore so I'm going to play every game I can, even if it's a loss.

"Take Fulop for example. He works hard to go X-0, and if he loses every first game in top, he wouldn't be as high as he should be. I see nothing wrong with dropping."

I disagree. The statement of he would not be as high as he should be.. If he can't win top cut, then he doesn't deserve an invite.

and it's not like kneeling in football. Sure you may be ahead, but in football you're ahead and have possession of the ball. As it relates to top cut, it's like refusing to play the 3rd quarter but able to keep your points. Your opponent may win the game but you still keep your points? (pretend for a moment that football was like soccer in the world cup as far as points vs wins). That's dumb. And if you look @ it that way, the unfairness of it becomes obvious.

there should be a points deduction equal to the k value of the tournament for dropping after topcut and it's not an emergency.

if you'll lose 20 for losing in topcut, but 32 for dropping, then it will be fair.

So wait...if you drop out of a tournament, your points are supposed to stay as is? I've dropped out before and I clearly remember automatically losing the next round. When I dropped, I was still placed in the pairings for the next round but because I wasn't there my "opponent" got an automatic win. What are the rules on this?

It may very well be "smart" to drop at times, but it is 100% against the Spirit of the Game. I could end the discussion with just that, but I won't.

There is a vital flaw in the system. Fulop and others have pointed it out and made helpful suggestions, and it is P!P's fault for not fixing this. I think a revolution is in order.

I'll leave this open for more discussion, I suppose.

dmaster out.

Dobsonr, I couldn't have said it better myself - this is one more critical flaw in P!P's management of competitive pokemon. Fix the rules, fix the tournament system, THEN we can have a competitive game where the championship isn't a joke and we don't have a minimum of one bad judge call headlining an event every year.

This may be really bad, but my point of view is that dropping just weeds out the good people so I have a better chance of winning :p

I personally am against dropping unless its an emergency or work related if you drop to to hold your ranking, avoid losing, hurt other people's rankings or so no one can win against you you should'nt even be at that tournament in the first place. (not to be mean to anyone but thats just how I feel)

I'd rather clinch a Worlds invite, than win a States etc. Think of it as me tanking the rating boost and handing you the prizes. I obviously don't need cards at this point.

This is very much a volatile topic.

Think about it this way. If you work SO hard during the whole season, trying to win by pouring in SO many hours into playtesting, with one goal in sight; "I want to go to worlds." Once you achieve that goal via points, wouldn't you NOT want to gamble for a title?
Just my 2 cents.
