The third generation was amazing, though I never played the 1st and 2nd. The music in the 3rd gen is so much better than the music on any other game.

I loved the Hoenn region, but I was disappointed when I couldn't get my Gold and Silver Pokemon over to it. I think this region was great, especially with gameplay being really smooth and fast. Who doesn't love Mudkip?

I really liked RSE too. It was my first Pokemon game, and I cared more about graphics than gameplay then. And I thought the graphics were good.

I actually liked Ruby and Sapphire, unlike one of my friends. According to him, he said it was basically a "water world", as half of it was water. I thought it made the game more challenging. I also liked the new and improved graphics.

Even with a lot of water, wasn't RSE the generation which sped up the Surfing speed AND introduced Running Shoes? How much time did that save us lol?

Music was great, the introduction of 2-on-2 battles was great, berries was great (re-plantable berries rather), abilities was great, more dragons and ghosts was great....

RSE introduced SO MUCH to the series that even if you consider it a low point in the Pokemon dynasty, it has a lot going for it that some fans (myself included) truly appreciate. As weird as it sounds, RBY are my least favourite, but that's only because they're so simple compared to every release since. DPPt are the best original games, but HG/SS are the best overall.

RBY was simple because it was on the GB. They introduced the most to the series. And I would hardly call HG/SS the best. It is just a remake of GSC, the best in the series. They could have done more and still not damaged the main plot. Maybe continued the G/S/C plot or had a filler in between the Slowpoke and Lack of Rage plots.

When I played it I enjoyed it, but not as much as any other game. I still play my yellow/silver/fire red/ platinum, but have never really wanted to go back to ruby. Although it did introduce many great ideas

I love the R/S/E games:D
It's these games i remember best, because the region is wonderful, with a lot of cities and many islands.
The Hoenn region is really different from the others because it has so many islands, and a lot of water, and that's great.
It also have cool gym leaders and Elite Four, and a lot of wonderful music:D

I actually like R/S/E

almost all pokemon introduced in Gen III were cool to me

here's my ranking of the pokemon generations

1. Gen III
2. Gen V (so far)
3. Gen I
4. Gen IV (i hated the way it has so many cross-evolutions)
5. Gen II (pretty lame pokemon designs)

Personally, they are my favorite Gameboy versions to play. o.o I don't know why people dislike them so much, hah.

Though it is 2-D, I find that the graphics are nice. It has has great music and is an overall fun game. Given that it isn't as snazzy as the newer games, but, it's still tons of fun for an older game.

While I have mellowed out on my opinions on G3, I still have very negative feelings towards them, FRLG most of all.

-Graphics
Yes, they are better, I just do not like the style. There are not enough colours, so the 'Anime/Ken' look of the sprites feels off, Gen2 isn't anime correct, so it doesn't bother me all that much. I also dislike the tile set, I don't know why, but it bugs me.

-Music
I know, a lot of people like the horn, but I find it annoying at times, and there are little to no memorable tracks, nothing like Lance/Red in GS or Champion Battle in RGBY, nothing like Victory Road and the town tracks are largely forgettable. To me, the RSE track sounds like something that belongs in a Mario game, where I'd probably like it more. However, I think the remixes of RGBY's tracks in RSE's tone are far worse than anything in RSE.

-Monsters
I don't think G3's monsters are bad at all. I don't like the Starters and a few others, but I like a bulk of them. So, no hatred here. Didn't care too much that most of the older mons were unavailable.

-Hoenn
Hoenn is... complicated. The water doesn't bother me, the trek through Vanderturf(sp) Tunnel and to Lava Ridge doesn't bother me all that much, neither does the water or anything, I just don't feel it. I can't name it, I just don't like the feel of the place.

But I have been speculating for a while, because I like the monsters, G1 and the NGC games, I just dislike the GBA pokemon engine, so I guess I'd be up for a remake, because I like the G4 engine, the G5 engine seems to be good and I would like to give Hoenn a go on an engine I like.

And a good RG remake. Can't forget that.

Third gen gets a bad rap for a lot of reasons.

First, it was not related to the first two generations at all. Second gen is generally considered to be the best generation - expectations were high.

Second, when it was learned that they would not be compatible with previous games (which was not something they had any control over), there was huge unrest. This meant that all our awesome Pokemon that we'd raised in GSC and battled in Pokemon Stadium 2 would be stuck there forever.

This translates to the third reason; due to this game not taking place in Kanto or Johto, a big chunk of Pokemon from those regions were missing (186 in total - that's nearly half of the entire 'dex). Needless to say, people were fairly upset.

As mentioned before, some people just don't like the designs. There are always gonna be haters in that regard, no matter how good the story is, so it's kind of a moot point.

This are just personal opinions.
Not related to first two generations - and how are Diamond and Pearl related to the last game of that type before them (FireRed/LeafGreen)? Or any game before them for that matter? (Don't say PalPark).
Second generation the best - why? That is your own opinion. Most people say because you can return to the Kanto, which is stupid reason for me. Then you can always play R/B/Y/G/S. Then making every game after that was a waste of time, right? Wrong.

You may ask yourselves - why were they unable to do the transfer? Well, lets think over the facts.
Okay. So, game designers could put in numerous codes, but eventually it would be broken, or hacker, or whatever. So you cold send back 3rd generation Pokémon, for a 2nd generation Pokémon (in a terms of trading - unless they were thinking 6 years in advance and make some kind of PalPark). So the main reason - lack of the Pokémon to trade back. And one more - graphics and system. Trading from GBC to GBA is just not possible. Think it like trading from Red Version to D/P. Silly, isn't it?
So you could literraly send to your Ruby version a Slowking and send back to your Crystal version a Zigzagoon. And game would either crush or freeze, and you'd have to re-start. Thats why they made FR/LG and made most of the Johto Pokémons available there.

Reason #3: Well, you said it yourself. The main reason WHY people didn't like R/S is because it is not taking place in Kanto and Johto. And about the Johto Pokémon, I already told. You can get them at the post-story mode of FR/LG.

And my opinion: Pokémon R/S were the best yet. Because it had colored battle scene, awesome looking Pokémons, new, BIG region (which cannot be defeated in 1 day like Johto), and awesome bunch of trainers which have some decent leveled Pokémons, so you won't end in league with lv.35 Feraligatr.

R/S F T W <3

And just to add: People are wayyy over nostalgic to Kanto and Johto. These regions are just "moving on" - everything new. And I like that. R/S are NOT Kanto and NOT Johto, and that is what makes them so special. (L)

The reason I dislike Gen 3 is actually a pretty simple one, it honestly felt like the first Pokémon game made with the intention of just making money. The entire dex, as well as Hoenn itself, seems to have been made using a checklist, everything just felt awfully similar.
Just about the dex: You have starters, vermin, cocoon-based bugs, 2 version-exclusive stone-based grass lines, 2 bird-lines, etc. It's almost possible to just go down the Gen 3 list and match every Pokémon with its Gen 1 counterpart, which will usually be in around the same spot in the dex.
The games just felt unimaginative, which I guess isn't really noticeable if these were you first Pokémon games, but sadly this wasn't really the case for me.

It also started some pretty horrible trends:
Silly teams whose only purpose seems to be global suicide
Overpowered and downright silly legends
One-of legends being version-exclusive, which is more of a "buy both games" than a "trade with your friends!" tactic
More dragons
Way too many legends
Way too many values which determine stats (where in Gen 2 the only value which really mattered was IVs, we now also have natures and a new EV-system)
And I'm sure there's a few more I can't think of at the moment.
On top of that, it still amazes me how they didn't do the Physical/Special split in Gen 3.

I'm not a big fan of most the designs either, but that's probably just a matter of opinion.

Gen 3 isn't necessarily horrible, it just isn't better than (and in a lot of ways worse than) Gen 2, which is quite sad considering they had more money, a bigger team and better hardware at their disposal.

Certain people are also have very strong nostalgic feelings towards Hoenn, what's your point?

@Heavenly Spoon :F
Well, in a recentish interview it was said that GS was supposed to be the end, so I guess that explains GS and RS fairly well.
