Wild Blaze Set Discussion

I think this is one of the best sets we’ve had in a while. There’s a genuine effort to make evolutions more playable while cutting back on the brokenness of big basics.

Top 10 Wild Blaze Cards:

(10) Mega Kangaskhan EX

M Kangaskhan-EX - Colorless - HP230
Mega Evolution - Evolves from Kangaskhan-EX
When 1 of your Pokemon becomes a Mega Evolution, your turn ends.
[C][C][C] Gangan Punch: 100+ damage. Flip a coin until you get tails. This attack does 30 more damage for each heads.
When a Pokemon-EX has been Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.
Weakness: Fighting (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 3

Of all the mega evolutions, I think this one is the most playable. This is largely due to the easy to pay energy costs, especially compared to other mega evolutions. The colorless energy costs means that any deck can take advantage of this 230 HP beast (imagine this with Aromatisse/max potion!). The attack is pretty good too (though nothing broken). At worst, you’re 2HKOing EX's, but with a muscle band and two heads, you might get lucky and take out an EX. Of course, there’s still the huge drawback of having to skip your turn when you bring him out, but with 230 HP and an above average attack, it should be a fair trade. It’s basic Kangaskhan EX is not bad either (has a nice draw attack to help set up).

(9) Milotic
Milotic - Water - HP100
Stage 1 - Evolves from Feebas
Ability: Energy Grace
You may Knock Out this Pokemon. If you do, select 3 basic Energy from your discard pile and attach them to 1 of your Pokemon (excluding Pokemon-EX). You may only use this ability once per turn.
[W][C][C] Waterfall: 60 damage.
Weakness: Grass (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 2

Here we have a stage 1 that can knock itself out to accelerate 3 energy from your discard pile onto one of your pokemon. But there’s a catch, that pokemon cannot be an EX. In a format where the majority of attackers you’d want energy on are EX, this puts a lot of limits on it. Limits that might make you think twice before giving up a prize to use the ability. But there are two things that give me hope for this card.

1. Energy Switch. As we’ve seen with Ho Oh EX, just getting the energy into play can be helpful because you can move them with energy switch. There’s also Aromatisse and cards with similar abilities. Heck, even scramble switch could be used for that one big play (though you may want to use life dew as you’re ace spec instead).

2. The future metagame. While Ex's are still pretty big now, it’s clear from this set in particular that the metagame is shifting to a more evolution friendly format. We have cards like Delphox who in addition to having an excellent ability, has an extremely powerful attack. I think we’ll see more cards like that in the future. In the mean time, we still have plenty of powerful non EX basics that should benefit from this.

We’ll have to see if Milotic can overcome it’s drawbacks to become a viable (if gimmicky) deck, but there’s no denying that a card that provides energy acceleration for any type is at least worth a look.

(8) Pokemon Center Lady
Pokemon Center Lady - Trainer
Supporter
Heal 60 HP from one of your Pokemon and remove any special conditions from it.
You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn (before your attack).

One thing noticeable in these new X and Y sets are the diverse roles of supporters. Where black and white supporters almost always involved draw, these last two sets has given supporters a wider range of uses. In addition, we’re also seeing items and abilities that can help draw cards. Decks should no longer have to rely on supporters as their source of draw, leaving a lot more room for supporters such as Pokemon Center Lady (PCL).

Now the effect of PCL is probably not game breaking, but like a lot of healing cards, it IS nice to have. It cancels out a lot of Raiden Knuckles or Oblivion Wings with Muscle Band or Dark Claw. Even better, you heal off nasty stasis effects. With lasers still in format, this is especially nice to have as it gets rid of the damage AND both effects. I’m not sure how this will affect the metagame (or IF it will have any affect), but it seems too useful to pass up.

(7) Flame Torch and Blacksmith
Flame Torch - Trainer
Item
Discard 1 Fire Energy from your hand, then draw 2 cards from your deck.
You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn (before your attack).
Blacksmith - Trainer
Supporter
Choose 2 [R] Energy from your discard pile and attach them to 1 of your [R] Pokemon.
You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn (before your attack).
I put these two together because they are both fire support trainers and they actually combo well together. While item based draw is never bad, I think blacksmith is the real star. Accelerating two energy from the discard pile IS extremely powerful and can win games at the right moment. The only problem is that fire already has energy acceleration in the form of Emboar which gives you unlimited attachment to any pokemon. That said, any energy acceleration is welcome, especially when it’s in trainer form and doesn’t require a stage 2.

(6) Goodra (Japanese Promo)
Goodra - Dragon - HP140
Stage 2 - Evolves from Sliggoo
Ability: Sliptrip
As long as this Pokemon is in play, both players cannot play Pokemon Tool cards from their hand.
[W][Y][C][C] Dragon Pulse: 130 damage. Discard 1 card from the top of your deck.
Weakness: Fairy (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 3
This is NOT the Goodra released in Wild Blaze. The one I’m talking about has been revealed here.

https://pokebeach.com/2014/02/yet-more-charizard-ex-wild-blaze-cards-revelaled

It’s on the list for one reason, Garbodor. If you get this out after tool scrapping their Garbodor, they can’t attach another tool to reactivate Garbotoxin, and your abilities are safe. Decks that rely on abilities should seriously consider a line of this (even a 1-1 line if they’re running rare candy). Of course, the ability in itself is also nice. Even if it is double edged, controlling what your opponent can play has always been valuable. Some decks may even rely on tools (like float stone/Keldeo, Tool Drop, Genesect/G Booster, Victory Piece) so this could shut off a lot of strategies. Combined with a strong (if oddly costed) attack and you got a potential winner.

(5) Druddigon
Druddigon - Dragon - HP110
Basic Pokemon
[C][C] Revenge: 20+ damage. If 1 of your Pokemon was Knocked Out by an attack during your opponent's last turn, this attack does 70 more damage.
[R][W][C][C] Dragon Claw: 80 damage.
Weakness: Fairy (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 2

Simply put, the best counter to Rayquaza and Black Kyurem EX. Like how Terrakion was used against Darkrai, Druddigon offers an easy two prize OHKO against two of the biggest attackers. The colorless attack allows it to be splashed into any deck that has trouble with those two. But even against other decks, an attack that does 90 for a DCE is nothing to scoff at, even if it’s a one time thing.

(4) Surprise Megaphone
Surprise Megaphone - Trainer
Item
Discard all Pokemon Tools attached to your opponent's Pokemon.
You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn (before your attack).
I don’t think I need to go into too much detail as to why this is a good card. We play tool scrapper, this does the same thing and then some, so naturally this will see play. The main use will be against Garbodor decks, but I wouldn’t count it out of the picture when Garbodor rotates, ESPECIALLY combined with Goodra.

(3) Pyroar
Pyroar - Fire - HP110
Stage 1 - Evolves from Litleo
Ability: Intimidating Mane
This Pokemon takes no damage from the attacks of your opponent's Basic Pokemon.
[R][C][C] Heat Fang: 60+ damage. You may discard an [R] energy attached to this Pokemon. If you do. this attack does 30 more damage.
Weakness: Water (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 2

Now we’re getting to the game breaking stuff. In a format where most big attackers are basic pokemon, this card should be huge. Safeguard pokemon already see significant play and they only stop Exes. They forces players to consider a non ex option. Pyroar takes it a step further and forces opponents to have entire evolution lines just to touch this thing. Pyroar also has an attack, and it’s actually not bad. The cost is manageable and it hits the magic 90, taking out Genesect and Virizion in one hit. Now a lot of decks have ways around this already. For instance, Genesect has G Booster, which tears through the ability, however, G booster is just one card out of 60 and even if an opponent draws into it, they will be forced to waste this move on a one prize pokemon. I would be surprised if this doesn’t have an effect on the meta.

(2) Lsyandre
Lysandre - Trainer
Supporter
Choose 1 of your opponent's Benched Pokemon and switch it with his or her Active Pokemon.
You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn (before your attack).
It’s catcher in supporter form. We knew how good this kind of effect was since gust of wind in base set. It’s so good that it still sees play when nerfed to a flip. Now the real question, is it worth giving up a supporter for? And I think the answer is yes, it is, especially when the alternative only works 50% of the time. Combined with the increase in item and ability draw (and a possible rotation changing the format in a few months), I think this could easily replace catcher. That said, I don’t think catcher will go away completely as it does have it’s obvious advantages, I just think that when push comes to shove, this will be the more popular choice in decks.

(1) Pokemon Fan Club
Pokemon Fan Club - Trainer
Supporter
Choose up to 2 Basic Pokemon from your deck, reveal them, and put them in your hand. Shuffle your deck afterwards.
You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn (before your attack).

Looking back, this is a pretty odd choice for best card in the set (Lysandre or Pyroar could easily claim that spot). Here we have another non draw supporter that will probably compete with Lysandre for a spot in decks. It’s the same line of thinking of Lysandre. Here we have a card that does something that other item cards can do, but better (getting 2 instead of 1). Consistency cards that get you the pokemon you need are pretty much staple. I could easily see this taking the place of the ball engines (especially when those cards rotate).

Honorable Mentions:

I want to give a few honorable mentions. First are the Charizard cards. All three of the basic Charizard EX's are solid. They’re nothing special, but for big fire basics, they should get the job done, so you can play Charizard and not be laughed out of a tournament. As for the megas, they’re cool, but I don’t think they’re practical at all. 300 is certainly nice, but it’s overkill when you realize how few pokemon go above 200 HP (which Black Kyurem EX takes out with much more ease).

Another one with a lot of potential is Miltank. For one colorless energy, you can do 80 damage if you have a stage 2 in play. Even these days with the massive power creep, that is an insanely good amount of damage for one energy. With a muscle band or silver bangle, you can be two hit KOing Exes, which for one energy on a basic, is very nice.

There’s also Shiftry, which should remind us of Empoleon, only less versatile.

I also think Toxicroak EX is rather neat. A DCE and a Virbank gym gets you 50 between turns. I don’t think this will be game breaking by any means, but it’s nice to have a card other than laser to combo with Virbank.

Lastly, pal pad looks promising. It doesn’t provide immediate advantage, but it gets supporters back in your deck to increase your odds of drawing into one. Considering there are so few ways to recover supporters right now, this is a welcome addition.

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

No miltank, 1 for 80, no fan club? I think those are in deserving of honorable mentions.

Miltank is in the honorable mentions and fan club is his number 1 choice.

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

Holy cow. Honestly that Miltank seems pretty broken to me with the nerfed catcher / Lysandre. 90 (2HKO EX) with a muscle band for one colorless energy just for having a Stage 2 on your bench. Probably one of the best cards in the format. And it has 100 HP so it can survive an opposing Miltank and most unboosted EX attacks.

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

Yeah, I would be surprised if Miltank doesn't see play. Seems like it would be a good fit in Greninja or Empoleon decks.

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

There's also a Butterfree line where the Caterpie and Metapod have an ability that lets you evolve them on the first turn or when you first put them down. Imagine the possibilities with Miltank hitting for at least 80 on your first turn (if you go second).

It would be even better if you could use evolutionary soda. I don't think you can though.

Yeah when I go to the flashfire prerelease on sunday I'm hoping to get those cards.

(6) Goodra (Japanese Promo)
Quote:
Goodra - Dragon - HP140
Stage 2 - Evolves from Sliggoo
Ability: Sliptrip
As long as this Pokemon is in play, both players cannot play Pokemon Tool cards from their hand.
[W][Y][C][C] Dragon Pulse: 130 damage. Discard 1 card from the top of your deck.
Weakness: Fairy (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 3
Yeah I need this against darkrai/garbodor for my blastoise deck.

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

I think Goodra will be good in Blastoise and Emboar decks. It not only stops Garb, but it also stops things like G Booster, float stone, muscle band, and a whole host of other strategies that players have taken for granted. I wonder if it could even see play in decks that don't run any other stage 2s (1-1-1 line maybe?)

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

I don't know if it'll be THAT good, but I wanna try Luxray and Protection Cube. 140 HP is a pretty good amount, and 120 for 2 Electric Energy and a Colorless is VERY good, and with Protection Cube it won't deal with that nasty 30 damage recoil. Plus having Luxray will let me be able to use the OP Miltank everyone has been talking about.

Protect cube could also be good with Golem, though I would personally still use Luxray. Even without the protect cube, 30 recoil isn't too bad. However, no protect cube with golem means trouble. 100 damage to yourself WILL get you knocked out next turn, at least 90% of the time.

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

In Japan, this set is already being played for a month, so I'd like to mention some cards that are used atm.

Charizard EX (the one that hits 150)
Blacksmith helps acceleration. 150 + band or laser bank, it can knock out EXs.

Druddigon
One-shots Rayquaza EX and BKEX.

Practically, this is it. Milotic, Kanghaskahn, Goodra, Shiftry all are considered as rogues. There are few Pyroar due to Yveltal-Garbodor and banded Rayquazas.
In terms of trainers, Lysandre is works well, especially with Darkrai-Yveltal which is the current top meta. I'd say this set is better than the previous one, but it still doesn't change the metagame significantly.

It's surprising that Pyroar isn't seeing much play. Then again, Trevenent doesn't see as much as play as we all thought it would so I guess this shouldn't surprise me.

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

When the sets rotate this may all change dramatically... Does anyone else get googly eyes for Butterfree? I think he may be a good deck for facing Blastoise and simular water decks; T1 Caterpie/Grass energy, T2 Rare Candy evolve to butter, DCE, swing for 70! You can band him for 90 swings, Virizion for anti-SC's, Floette would be a good splash to bump him to 150 HP. Thinking comboing him with Ninetails would be good, swap in blastoises and one shot them for weakness, or Keldeo as well.... just a thought :D.

I like Charizard, Blacksmith combo, Butterfree, Shiftry, Pyroar, Toxicroak EX (totally wanna run a poison deck with him), Floette, Kangaskhan EX, Miltank, Lysandre, and the megaphone for the set :D Totally gonna build a Grass and Fire deck next... two of my favorite colors! and this set gives a lot to those colors.

But you can get Butterfree out T1 because of Caterpie's and Metapod's ability lets them evolve the turn they're played or first turn of the game.

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

Didn't realize that! T1 150 HP butterfree! It's going down...

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

My top cards from wild blaze:

  • 10) Charizard EX is a good attacker, I think it will have more potential once plasma gets out of format.

    9) Miltank cheap attack, great help for slow-heavy evolution decks.

    8) Fiery torch, draw power + discard for blacksmith

    7) Blacksmith double dark (fire) patch, but is a supporter

    6) Pokemon fanclub considering that, level ball gets rotated, this card is a great help for evolutionary decks that need to get quick basics

    5) Surprise megaphone, in a format with such good tools (float stone, muscle band, sliver mirror, silver bangle, etc ...) this card is awesome. Personally I hate the way that this card kills tooldrop deck though.

    4) Pal pad this card means so much for late game, especially for N.

    3) Lysandre When you have your setup ready this card is more valuable than any other 5-7 cards.

    2) Druddigon, Druddigon says: see you later BKEX!. Also is a cheap attacker for any other matchup.

    1) Pyroar: This is my favorite card of the set, I know it's not an inexpugnable barrier, or a OP attacker, but his ability means troubles for any metadeck (except maybe garbodor, or empoleon). It also joins to the list of fire support (fiery torch, blacksmith, DCE, delphox,etc...) to combine with the attacker you want (Reshiram, Charizard, Entei, etc...).
My favorite rouge cards (obviously pyroar doesn't count as rogue, it is quite predictable that will see some play).

  • Magnezone: + muscle band+ laserbank OHKO to yveltal and 50 damage tho the bench.

Dusknoir: if you already play dusknoir BK this could be a nice tech.

Duskull: Remember pokeflute? he's back in poke form .

Rapidash: Cheap attacker , combined with fliptini and silver bangle its great.

Forretress: Klinklang says : Join me before "heavy ball" gets outside the format.

Shiftry: New fire dynamics say hello, but I really like his ability.

RE: Wild Blaze Competitive Cards

I think that Charizard EX (11) and Mega Charizard Y EX are heavily underrated. T1 get Charizard out and use stoke. Get 3 energy cards and use Fire Blast for T2 120 damage. Then, get another energy, mega evolve, attach protect cube, and you are doing 300 damage on T3 with no drawback at all. You can throw Pyroar to counter Keldeo EX.

Expected Impact of Flashfire's Trainers on Your Decks

In most of my "fast" decks (i.e., no stage 1 nor 2 Poké lines), my card draw and Poké search "engine" mostly consisted of:

2 Bicycle (or 4 Roller Skates)
2 Colress (or 0 when playing 4 Roller Skates)
4 N
3 Professor Juniper
2 Skyla
4 Ultra Ball

With the introduction of the Flashfire set, Pokémon Fan Club and Pal Pad "seem" to have the biggest impact on these decks of mine. I'm now playtesting +1 PFC and +1 PP for an Ultra Ball and Skyla. Haven't played enough games yet to arrive at any conclusions.

What impact have these 2 cards have on your decks (any stage)?

RE: Expected Impact of Flashfire's Trainers on Your Decks

Pokemon Fan Club will replace an Ultra Ball, for sure. For my RayBoar deck, I've been thinking about Flame Torch and how many to play for added consistency.
