Expanded Wobbats (Wobbuffet / Crobat)

The name is pretty self-explanatory. The idea of the deck is to get Wobbuffet attacking with the aid of Bats getting damage counters on Pokemon. The Wob locks down abilities from non-psychic types, which can prevent my opponent from setting up or going on the offensive. This is my first deck that I've been using to some success but it has some problems that need working out:

  1. Mulligans are killing me. Sometimes up to 4 a game. This gives my opponent extra resources and it can be a problem when they see Golbat/Zubat.
  2. Going second. Right now I've just about figured out that with this deck, going first=win, going second=loss. I need help to make this deck more consistent when going second.
  3. I often end up drawing dead. I never seem to have what I need.
  4. Darkness and metal decks are no fun to play. The Pokemon that are played in them usually have resistance to psychic, which means I have to really reach of KOs when I play either of the types. Luckily Yveltal and its EX counterpart have Fighting resistance, so Darkness can be a bit easier to handle.

Without further ado, the deck:

Revised list:

Pokémon - 16
  • 1 Dedenne FFI 34
  • 4 Wobbuffet PHF 36
  • 4 Zubat PLS 53
  • 4 Golbat PHF 32
  • 3 Crobat PHF 33
Trainer Cards - 37
  • 1 Computer Search BCR 137
  • 1 Sacred Ash FLF 96
  • 1 Random Receiver DEX 99
  • 1 Xerosic PHF 119
  • 3 Dimension Valley PHF 93
  • 1 Lysandre AOR 78
  • 4 Super Scoop Up FFI 100
  • 3 Hypnotoxic Laser PLS 123
  • 3 Ultra Ball FLF 99
  • 4 Professor Sycamore BKP 107
  • 3 N NVI 92
  • 1 Colress PLS 118
  • 2 Level Ball AOR 76
  • 2 AZ PHF 91
  • 3 Muscle Band XY 121
  • 4 VS Seeker PHF 109
Energy - 7
  • 7 Psychic Energy
Strategy:

I've chosen to use 1 Miltank because a friend suggested it. It's one more basic, has a cheap energy cost for an attack that combos well with Crobat, and is good for cleaning up late game when Scoop-Ups are gone.

I play Computer Search over Scoop Up Cyclone because sometimes you need something and you just don't have it, or you have extremely low chances of drawing it. Usually for me it's an energy or a stadium.

Right now I'm playing Muscle Band over FFB because it can soak up resistances and make math a bit easier. Sometimes I wish it were FFB though, as the extra HP can really come in Handy (it's even saved some of my Zubats from getting donked).

Let me know if there are any more questions about the deck and what improvements you have.

1. Mulligans are killing me. Sometimes up to 4 a game. This gives my opponent extra resources and it can be a problem when they see Golbat/Zubat.
To address mulligans, you essentially need an "adequate" number Basic Pokémon to essentially increase your chances (plain probability) of starting with more than 1 Pokémon. Consider increasing your Basic Pokémon count by 1, thoroughly shuffle and deal out opening hands (e.g., 20 times), and continue to add another Basic Pokémon until your are satisfied with your opening Pokemon. Other Pokémon you may want to consider adding are Pokémon like Emolga (DRX) or Dedenne (FFI) that both have an initial attack that can help you setup your bench for just C energy cost.

2. Going second. Right now I've just about figured out that with this deck, going first=win, going second=loss. I need help to make this deck more consistent when going second.
Going first or second is suppose to be completely random. Whether you go first or second, you will still need to get setup as best as you can. IMO, your going second is not an issue. Ideally, starting with a Wobbuffet has its advantages in that it can disrupt your opponent's setup; so, this would be a priority.

3. I often end up drawing dead. I never seem to have what I need.
To minimize drawing "dead," 1 technique some players use is to run multiple copies of Battle Compressor (along with Trainer's Mail, Acro Bike, Unown, etc.) in order to "thin-out" their decks to the needed cards for that particular matchup. In your case, there are only 6 card-draw Supporters which is woefully insufficient, especially without supplemental card-drawing help via Shaymin EX or Octillery. I typically run 9 card-draw supporters and 1 Shaymin EX in most decks. Also, review other decks in the Garage for comparison too.

Well, accept the fact that every deck will have bad a match-up(s)... You can't avoid that issue, but you can try to reduce the odds of your losing to certain decks with the inclusion of certain tech cards that can help you. For example, the Dedenne (referenced above) has a second attack that inflicts damage based upon the amount of energy attached to the Defending Pokémon and Yveltal/Yveltal Ex are both L-weak. This attack can be quite helpful at times.

Suggested deck changes for improvement, IMO:

-1 Miltank - not critical
-3 Trainer's Mail - low priority to other cards
-3 Hypnotoxic Laser - without Virbank, this Item is not that effective

+2 Dedenne
+2 Level Ball - to help get more Golbats and Zubats out faster
+1 Professor Juniper - more card draw
+1 N - more card draw support and opponent's hand disruption
+1 Professor Birch's Observations / Shauna - more card draw
I hope you find these comments helpful.

Interesting you're having to mulligan so much. In my current DL I run 8 pokemon and rarely have had to mulligan. Make sure to table shuffel your deck and don't over shuffel as I've seen this lead to multiple mulligans.

You have plenty of basics to not mulligan that often, sounds like you might have just had a run of bad luck. I run a Greninja deck with 6 basics and it mulligans a lot, but rarely 4 times. You can add Judge or red card if you want to knock the opponent's hand down after mulligan, but it helps most when going first. Dedenne or Emolga are good for getting Zubats out, Dedenne has a good attack but Emolga has free retreat.

Shaymin's always help with consistency, but you don't have Ultra Ball, so it'd change your lineup quite a bit. An easy add is Jirachi EX, since he can be gotten with a Level Ball and then pull a Professor Juniper. Also definitely agree on Battle Compressor, you can put 1 AZ or other supporters in there and VS Seeker them out whenever.

It's in PTCGO, which might explain the mulligans.

I think I disagree with this one, as the Laser helps to stack damage counters, but I might try the other suggestions you made.

EDIT:

These are the changes I made:

-3 Trainers mail
-1 Miltank

+1 Juniper
+1 N
+1 Random Reciever
+1 Dedenne
