XY-On

^

Yeah, having been playing this game for well over 2 years, I can't imagine the format without Darkrai, Keldeo, or N. But if it means Garbodor goes back to the trash heap where it came from, I'm cool.

I'm also going to miss fliptini (though trick coin is a decent replacement).

Don't forget you can still use Mountain Ring to protect your bench babies.

I wonder if a lot of the functionality of these cards will be reprinted in the sets following Primal Clash. I've only been playing Pokemon competitively since Flashfire came out so I've only ever seen one rotation. Do they usually reprint or recreate cards that are seen as essential in many decks?

so just a quick question. When is this format going to be a thing? meaning standard is XY on and expanded is lets say BCR on? after worlds 2015?

Nobody knows if or when this will ever come into effect. At least not yet.

I doubt that expanded would rotate to BCR on. I mean it's only at BW just now. Maybe Itll go noble Victories on but I don't think it'll rotate at all.

Here's a list of all the Tier 1 and 2 cards we would lose from an XY-on Format, each with a note on what they did.

(List removed to conserve space.)

A few other cards that will be missed if XY-on is the case.

Reshiram BW/ LTR (Outrage)

Jax listed the Outragers as a whole, but Reshiram gets special mention since Blue Flare is also good. Has seen use as of late comboed with Pyroar and/or Seismitoad. A solid Pokemon with two strong attacks that can easily be powered up via Blacksmith, or in the case of Outrage a DCE.

Max Potion

Despite all the new and awesome Fairy cards, losing this is going to hurt. A lot. Super Potion really doesn't fill in the role of this card. This is pretty central to Fairy's strategy, but has seen use in other decks as well.

Random Receiver

Hasn't seen a whole lot of play lately, but is part of the "cancer" draw engine that some Seismitoad decks have used as of late. Loss of this card will drastically reduce this engine's power. Critical in decks that run low Supporter counts.

Tornadus-EX (DRX/ Promo)

This card saw use in older Big Basics decks and is still occasionally played for its Fighting resistance. Being able to hit a quick 60 if there's a Stadium in play can be good. Power Blast is also a strong attack if you can afford the energy and don't get too many tails.

Emboar BW/ NXD / LTR

Fire's answer to Blastoise. Somewhat outclassed by Blacksmith and a lack of a an attacker with KO power to pair with like Rayquaza-EX, which rotated. Could be partnered with Camerupt-EX, but suffers from the usual Stage 2 problems.

Energy Retrieval / Superior Energy Retrieval

Important for Blastoise and Emboar decks that discarded lots of energy to attack. Energy Retrieval was reprinted as a Japanese promo, so we may see it re-introduced. Supier Energy Retrieval is the far more powerful card however, and has not been reprinted sinec Plasma Freeze.

Absol PLF

Used in some Dark decks as a non-EX attacker, has seen less play since Dark Patch rotated and Pyroar started existing. Good for hitting Safeguards, but won't do anything to a Pyroar.

Mew-EX

Has resurfaced as a useful card with the release of Phantom Forces. Dimension Valley makes its attacks quite viable, as it can copy the moves of other Pokemon for one less energy. Still iffy due to its low HP, but in the right deck can lead to some powerful combos.

Shaymin-EX

Okay late-game card that's played in some VirGen and Fairy lists. Fragile, but Revenge Blast can do a lot of damage for little energy if you opponent has taken most of his or her prizes.

Professor Juniper

Hey, some of us have lots of this card since we've been playing since BW started. Now I'm going to have to hunt down three more playsets of Sycamore, who doesn't have a full art (yet).

What do you think will happen to Fairy decks if Max Potion goes? Will they just stop being played or do you think they can still work using cards like Super Potion, Super Scoop Up and AZ in place of Max Potion? Or perhaps Max Potion will be reprinted before the rotation?

There really isn't a substitute for Max Potion in the format. The 60 damage healed by Super Potion will occasionally but not always save an important Pokemon from being KOed. It will however deny your opponent from sniping a benched Pokemon with 10-30 HP left. Still, that's only a fraction of the Potion's versatiliy. Every other currently legal card also has some sort of drawback. Cassius puts the Pokemon itself and anything attached (except for energy, since you moved that off) back into the deck. That means you have to search it out all over, and in the case of a Mega Evolution, build it up again. It also takes up your Supporter for the turn. AZ is slightly better, but it will discard tools and again, a Mega Evolution will need to be built up all over... and the Spirit Link you used is now discarded. Both options limit your draw support in a format that's so dependent on it.

As you said though, there's always the possibility of a reprint. A handful of key Trainers from the Black and White era have already been reprinted (Enhanced Hammer, Ultra Ball, etc.), so there's always a chance. After Primal Clash there will be another 1-2 sets before the rotation, which is still months away.
