#9: Obesity

Indeed. I suppose the greatest key to all of this can be summed up in one word:

"Moderation."
yea thats pretty much what i was going for lol
thanks

EDIT: im a 14 year old guy and i weigh... around 130 lbs
that's actually less than most i would say

I think the right idea would be make salads so much easier to afford and/or access. I don't know in America but there is barely any like salad bars where you only eat salads in London. Now if the world had as many salad bars as unhealthy takeaway shops then you know some would actually just go there as there is no preparation, generally cheap and easy to get.

Well McDonalds has salads and usually at buffets they have a side with salads so I don't see why they are hard to access.

And why is just salad the answer to obesity? There's other healthy foods...

I'm just making a comment on this, saying they shouldn't just have like fast food type salad resturants, but include other healthy food, too.

Yes but if you saw a salad and a burger which would you choose? If you didnt have to be in a restruant which sells the enemy of healthy food surely you are going to be tempted

Also I never said salads the answer but a good way to start

McDonalds only have salads on the menu so they can pretend that everything they produce is healthy.

Plus McDonalds are also destroying the environment. We should just boycott McDonalds. (Never going to happen)

America would only boycott McDonalds for its scary clown.

On topic, it's only a matter of whether the public makes good decisions or not.

why's this all about McDonalds? there are plenty of other bad places that you can eat... most people just don't bother to find out how much fat or whatever is in a meal, i used to be really fat, i din't know about fat calories, carbs, and any of those other things. then i looked up on the internet to find out how bad some of these things are, i cut fast food in half. now the only place i go is taco bell, like 1 time a month.

i say the main reason for obesity is that either people don't know, or they just don't care enough to find out.

McDonalds is famous. =D

You can't argue about your local restaurant because no one would get you. Everyone understands McDonalds.

Yeah this is definitely a big problem (no pun intented). But its really no one's fault but the obese person's. Like stated before there are multiple ways for people to lose weight. I think its stupid when people blame the food they eat or how much healthy food costs. For one everyone knows how bad McDonalds is for you and other stuff like that but they still eat it, justifying that "its cheaper and faster to get." It ends up costing just as much if not more and is way worse for you. Healthy food really doesn't cost that much anyways. You can usually get a couple meals out of that stuff and if you can't afford getting 12 portions worth then OMG! Your going to eat less than you usually do! What a shame considering your trying to lose weight! I also think that its dumb that parents and/or teachers teach you not to make fun of people for being overweight when doing that makes it seem like you can just go along being fat and uncomfortable and people will accept it. Not really the best lesson to be teaching....

For people who are saying that subway is good for you, think again. Have you ever taken the time to see just how high the carbohydrate count is on one of those sandwiches? Those numbers are far from the recommended carb count in one meal, that's for sure.
6" sub from Subway (result depends on type of sub chosen.)
Calories: 170-250, Total Fat: 2-5g, Carbs: 31-41g

A Burger King Whopper
Calories: 680, Total Fat: 40g, Carbs: 51g

A Happy Meal in McDonalds (with a cheeseburger, small fries, and diet coke)
Calories: 540, Total Fat: 24g, Carbs: 60g

Wendy's Hamburger
Calories: 420, Total Fat: 20g, Carbs: 37g

Chick-fil-A Chargrilled Chicken Club Sandwich
Calories: 390, Total Fat: 12g, Carbs: 38g

While it's apparent that Subway still has a high number of carbs, it sure beats the rest of the fast food restaurants. I'd go there if I were to chose. But in all honesty, you should try to avoid them if you can. =/
It's sad that a happy meal would be so bad for you.

FOr my self, I've recently found the solution of eating healthy: WATER.
That's right, if you want to eat healthy, DRINK water....

~ Drinking water before meals cleans the stomache, and makes you more aware when you have eaten enough.
~ Drinking water has no bad atributes
~ When you drink water, fried and oily foods loose their taste, fresh food tastes better
~ The dedicated athletes among us know that when you are extremely tired, only water tastes good, Gatorade doesn't help
~ Water inceases the metabolism
~ Water is free everywhere (accept dairy queen, 10 cents a cup)
~ Water is very filling. Most of us feel "full" after more than 2 times our capacity, water illiminates that.
~ Who doesn't have Nestle Purelife water bottle bottles in their garage?

I challenge everyone who reads this post, to get water next time they get fastfood. Drink the whole cup first, then eat your meal. I guarentee you'll be surprised how little food you need. Drink another full cup after, and you will be surprised how good, and not hungry you feel.

Be careful of salads too. Sounds rediculous, btu surveys show in particular packaged salads, ther are over 800 calories. Probably to do with the dressing or something. Ther is also insane amounts of fat. Next time you go to a shop to buy a salad for a 'healthy lunch' consider that you may as well have just bought a big mac with cheese and chips.

I refrain from fast food except on very vyer very rare occasions. Being Jewish, I can only eat Kosher foods, so I would never be able to go into macdonalds or subway anyway. I guess thats quite lucky, but I guess you can get fast food at Kosher restauraunts too.

The calorie daily limit is also way over what I think is useful. For teens, if you're trying to keep skinny, you should not be taking in 2000 calories a day like the government recomends. I'm loosing weight and very concious abotu this, and I only consume about 750 calories a day, and excersise a lot. Still havent lost much. Sticking to the guidelines is not the way to go.

Words of advice: Before you buy any packaged products ever, check how many calories and how much fat is in them. If you're consuming over 4-500 calories per meal regularly, then its a problem.

Oh God, obesity is a joke. It is a made-up scheme by the medical community to try and swindle your money. There is nothing wrong with being Obese, and in fact, it is not a threat to your health. More lies from the idiots who call themselves Doctors, of course. I understand that I will undoubtedly face many people who are in strong disagreement with me, but I know the truth. It will be interesting what kind of reaction people will make to my post, actually.

In any case, excellent thread as usual, Baconator!

I am stunned as to how you could possibly think that obesity has no ill effects.

Rather than call the authorities on the subject idiots and say "I know the truth", please back up your claims with evidence.

I will gladly back up my claims with evidence, but the evidence is in books. I will find the titles of these interesting reads later, as I cannot right now. But be assured, they will come...

US only, IDK about Canada, but in Europe it's not free :p

Anyway, I'd also say obesity as epidemic is a big joke. Let's take a look at the only real problems it brings:

-Shorter lifespan
-Blood Pressure Problems
-Type 2 Diabetes (VERY rarely)

Now, shorter lifespans aren't great, but they're not the end of the world. We're only talking 5 years or so. 5 years as an old geezer, in a nursing home. Doesn't sound all too great.
Blood Pressure problems are real, but not too serious either.Again, this is part of the reduction in lifespan. It doesn't make your life miserable, you can have really messed up blood pressure and not notice a thing.
Go ahead and argue with me about Diabetes. Just try. There are PLENTY of other ways to get Diabetes.

Now, what people are REALLY concerned about are their looks. Is a nation of people who feel awful about their waist size an issue we need to spend time complaining about?

...I don't think so.

I have seen the effects of obesity staying with an obese friend in St. Louis a month ago. It is a major problem and it definitely isn't a Doctor conspiracy or whatever you want to call it.

Just don't put the dressing on. Then it has like <100 calories.

dmaster out.

I'm talking abotu pre-bough and pre-packaged salds that you buy in shops/supermarktes. Homemade stuff, you choose what goes in it. That goes without saying.
