Playthrough DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Finished!

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 1 up!

I have someone much better in mind than TDL for Gardenia. Once you see it, you will agree. Raw lulz will ensue.

DNA's Pokémon Pearl Run-Through
Chapter 2: The Recurring Stooges

I leave Oreburgh behind forever because it's a hick dive and I have no intention of grabbing fossils. ...nah, that's a lie. When I storm Mount Coronet I'm going to fly to here on account of it having the closest entrance. Anyway, Teapot runs into me as I leave and says the next badge is in Eterna City, to which I reply 'I know'.

I double back to Jubilife and snag a random Starly (which may be important later) and start to head north, when I see Professor Pride and his lovely young assistant Bellomence, talking with some nerds in bowl-cuts.

<~Pride> Hey DNA
<+DNA> o/
<~Pride> Can you help me with something?
<+DNA> sure; what's up?
<~Pride> I created some training dummies for you to test out on
<~Pride> I'm trying to test the double battle engine in this game
<~Pride> and I'm trying to work out all the bugs.
<~Pride> Can you team up with Bellomence and beat these guys up?
<RedRain> um
<TwistedTurtwig> we're standing right here, you know
<+DNA> Sure, I'm down with that
<+DNA> just so long as you provide some good battle music
<~Pride> Sweet :p

Cue a double battle with two Team Galactic Grunts, with music to match. Pride's assistant Bellomence drops a Piplup, while I drop the classy Zubat Crumpets. As all gentlemen do, he introduces himself to the young lady before preparing to tear Red Rain and TwistedTurtwig a new one. I mean, they just have Zubat and Wurmple each at lv. 9; how is that threatening?

<RedRain> wtf man
<RedRain> you put us up against DNA
<RedRain> that's like...unfair
<RedRain> no matter what, we lose
<TwistedTurtwig> whatever, bro
<TwistedTurtwig> let's go lurk somewhere else
<RedRain> k

Then Laurel and Hardy run off. Admit it; this is way better than being cast as a Bidoof. Pride thanks me for testing the engine and walks off, then suddenly some fat guy I've never met runs up to me. A cousin of Mr. Poketch, maybe? Yep, some guy with a TV station. He gave me a Fashion Case.

HA

k time for route 204

Not much to say here. It's just Crumpets and TorTERROR being bros and dream-smashing everyone. The first trainer I fight has a Magikarp, for goodness' sake.

Floaroma Town. Lots of flowers and it's quite pretty. I know Heracross can be caught in honey trees*, so I head to the meadow to snag some honey, but lo and behold, Red Rain and TwistedTurtwig are standing near the entrance like scrubs.

(*To save time for the walkthrough, instead I will trade a Heracross over from HG when I get access to honey.)

Unable to do much here, I go to Route 205 and get asked by a little girl there to rescue her papa from Valley Windworks from the mean spacemen. Not sure how to handle it, I try to go north to see more of Route 205, but...

<+DNA> dude
<+DNA> didn't I just see you both blocking off Floaroma Meadow
<RedRain> ...no
<RedRain> that was...
<TwistedTurtwig> our identical less attractive cousins
<+DNA> identical cousins
<+DNA> right

Seeing this is going nowhere, I go over to where Valley Windworks is. A Galactic Grunt is blocking the door and I am relieved to see it's neither of the Two Stooges. ...Doesn't mean I won't go easy on him. I beat up him and his Glameow, but he turns tail and locks himself inside, but not before dropping that RR&TT pair #1 have another key.

Oh, I'm going to enjoy this.

They come at me one at a time, probably still shamed that they lost in a double battle. I'm guessing they don't want to take their chances. It doesn't help much. At least their lines are slightly less lame than before.

<TwistedTurtwig> dammit
<+DNA> okay hand the key over
<+DNA> or I'll beat up your slightly more attractive identical cousins
<TwistedTurtwig> what
<TwistedTurtwig> they said we were less attractive than them!?
<RedRain> screw that
<RedRain> we're going to go teach us a lesson
*** RedRain has left #meadow
*** TwistedTurtwig has left #meadow

They dropped the key as they left, so I guess I win regardless. I manage to have them beat each other up while I stealthily sneak in and go rescue a little girl's father. On the way there, though, I'm accosted by a rather large insect.

<Thorne> sup
<+DNA> who are you
<Thorne> I'm Thorne
<Thorne> can't you tell by my nick?
<+DNA> what brings you here, though?
<Thorne> isn't it obvious?
<Thorne> I'm here to travel with you peeps
<Thorne> whaddya say?
<Thorne> surely you wouldn't object to such a fine example of insect culture
<TorTERROR> I dunno man
<TorTERROR> I have my doubts about this guy
<Thorne> first of all, I'm a girl; didn't you notice the horn?
<Crumpets> Indeed, good sir; that is indicative of the female of the species.
<Crumpets> Milady, please forgive my uninformed friend here.
<Thorne> it's fine
<TorTERROR> doesn't mean I don't have my doubts
<Thorne> also I brought Mike's
<TorTERROR> welcome aboard

And just like that, Thorne the Heracross joins my ranks. She and TorTERROR hit it off right away, and just like that they become dolo buddies. I just have to make sure both of them are sober before a big fight. She came with a Rash nature, at lv. 14, and with Guts. Admittedly, I was catching a bunch of Heracross in HG. This was the second one that had Guts (the one before was Modest, and everything before had Swarm with equally awful natures). Also, I kinda like the thought of a female Heracross, since most of my team is going to end up male and I don't want it turning into a sausagefest.

So I infiltrate the Valley Windworks. There are 2 grunts in there to fight (the first being Red Rain and the second being TwistedTurtwig, obviously), so I decide to test out Thorne. Unfortunately, she isn't quite sober just yet, and refuses to obey the first command. I decide not to chance it for the next matches, so I put her on standby for now. I get to where the commander is and I see a familiar face that I wasn't expecting to see.

<+DNA> wait, what?
<+DNA> you? why are you here?
<+DNA> and why the hell are you wearing a hoop skirt
<Hurricane> that...
<Hurricane> ...is a good question, actually
<Hurricane> I guess they ran out of roles or something?
<+DNA> I guess so
<+DNA> I wouldn't expect to see you here, now that you went off and have a life
<+DNA> but for now it's probably just safe to play along
<Hurricane> yeah, probably

Then I enter battle with Galactic Commander Mars Hurricane. It turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. She leads with a lv. 14 Zubat, while I lead with Crumpets (who is 1 level lower), because the Zubat mirror is actually kinda fun. I spam Supersonic until it hits, and when it does, the Zubat effectively kills itself. Next up comes the lv. 16 Purugly, which I'm more concerned about, so I hand this off to TorTERROR. He swears at the Purugly twice, which I chide him for, but then he tells me that cursing gives him power.

"Stop trying to be like PDC," I tell him, but he doesn't pay it much mind. He does, however, get hit by a critical Scratch from the Purugly, so I use a Potion on him - the first time I've used a medicinal item in this playthrough, I might add. With two Razor Leaves, the Purugly is out of the picture.

<Hurricane> huh
<Hurricane> not bad, DNA
<Hurricane> didn't think you'd be using a loudmouthed Turtwig, though
<TorTERROR> hey!
<TorTERROR> it's because pride and DNA are best broskis and th-
<TorTERROR> WHOA WHAT
* TorTERROR glow
* TorTERROR grow
* TorTERROR grotle
<+DNA> the puns. ouch.
<TorTERROR> mirror...
<TorTERROR> MIRROR!!
* Crumpets holds up a mirror
<TorTERROR> wow
<TorTERROR> I look significantly more badass
<TorTERROR> thanks, hoop skirt lady! your Purugly really helped.
<Hurricane> I think I'm just going to go
<+DNA> okay, take care
*** Hurricane has left #windworks

Right then, the little girl comes up, glad that her father has been rescued from Team Galactic, but then notices that he's stinky and tells him to shower right away. She then comments that the balloon Pokemon might show up again.
Now, if I chose to have Drifblim in this playthrough, instead of Gengar, I might actually be interested in that. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, it's Wednesday, not Friday, so I'll have to hold off.

The next part I predict will be kinda long, so I'm going to cut off this chapter so I don't have to rush the Route 205+Eterna Forest trek. This also gives me opportunity to think up more lines. Time to get to work!

End of Chapter 2!

DNA's Team so far:
[sprite]388[/sprite] TorTERROR lv. 18
[sprite]41[/sprite] Crumpets lv. 14

-----
[sprite]399[/sprite] Slave 0 lv. 3
[sprite]396[/sprite] Slave 1 lv. 3

I think after this part I'm going to trim out the HM slaves from the team synopsis, since they're just sitting around and not getting any lines. Well, maybe.

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 2 up!

You are now my favorite person for this week.
Also, Jinxie :D

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 2 up!

I'm just sitting here waiting for me to show up. Reading this makes me miss baconlocke.

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 2 up!

Ah, worry not. I have an especially hilarious role prepared for you.

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 2 up!

I'm not sure on how regularly I should be posting the new chapters of this run-through, so I might as well ask you guys.

How often should I be posting new chapters of the run-through? Once every 3 days? 5 days? week? specific days of the week? something else?

I want to know how often you'd like these to come around, and when you think a good time interval is. I have a feeling twice a week is a good idea, though I'd like feedback. Don't suggest something too quick - I want to keep the actual game about 2 chapters ahead of the postings. (For example, I recently started writing chapter 5, as of this post.)

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 2 up!

I think twice a week is good spacing. Wednesday and Saturday possibly?

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 2 up!

As often as you feel like it? I don't think adding a specific schedule would really add anything to the playthrough. If you feel like playing and writing more often, make sooner updates, but don't feel afraid to slack off for a couple days either.

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 2 up!

I forgot about this for a while, actually. And I might I say, this is pretty hilarious. All I hope is that this isn't the last we see of Red Rain and I, and our identical less attractive cousins.

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 2 up!

@TT: It's not.

I've decided that, based on input, I'm going to do a post-as-I-go style, based on how far ahead I am writing my playthrough...which is what I've been doing up until now anyway. I like to keep my writing about 1.5 to 2 chapters ahead of my playthrough postings, so I like to try and keep ahead.

Expect Chapter 3 to go up later today.

RE: DNA's Choose-My-Team Run-Through of Pokémon Pearl! Ch. 2 up!

Good to hear! If you ever feel the lack of deadline is significantly hurting your motivation at any point, just speak up and I can whip and/or ban you as an extra source of inspiration.

DNA's Pokémon Pearl Dolo Run-Through
Chapter 3: They Sure Are Persistent, Aren't They?

"All right, guys," I say, after we exit Valley Windworks. "We've cleared out Galactic from the windworks, made the two stooges beat each other up, and now have a third member, Thorne, in our ranks. What should we do next?"

"Why not just keep walking towards Eterna City? We were heading that way anyway, weren't we?" TorTERROR said.

"Ah, yes, of course. We still have quite a bit of walking to do, so let's prepare to go."

As can be expected, no one there poses much of a threat, but Crumpets is still kinda frail at this point and needs a bit of TLC from Grotle. I, on the other hand, am thinking of who to cast Cheryl as, since she's coming up pretty soon. Before I enter Eterna Forest, I've decided who. And thus I walk in.

<+DNA> o/
<+Artemis> Hi, DNA
<+Artemis> ...where am I right now?
<+DNA> You're playing the part of a pretty lady with a Chansey wanting to be escorted through Eterna Forest.
<+DNA> Because, according to the game script, you are afraid of going alone because of Team Galactic.
<+Artemis> Wait, am I in your Pearl run-through?
<+DNA> technically it's Dolo run-through, but yes, basically.
<+Artemis> Oh, wow! I never would have guessed! Thanks a bunch, DNA.
<+DNA> You're welcome. Now, shall we?

Thus, Artemis makes a cameo in my run-through. She's got plenty of healing items, so, as is the case with all escorts, our Pokemon are fully healed after each fight, and all trainers are arranged such that they will trigger double battles. Wanting to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, I try to battle all the trainers I can, so Artemis will have more screen time. She has only 1 Pokemon here, a lv. 15 Chansey.

From my run-through of Diamond way back in 2007, I caught my shiny Buneary here, one turn before Chansey Egg Bombed it to death. I hope that Chansey's violent streak doesn't get in the way of capturing something I really want, but I doubt it.

The first trainer battle in the forest is quite disappointing. One girl has a lv. 14 Pachirisu as her lone Pokemon, so I try to kill that first. Sadly, Crumpets gets Sparked to death and Thorne was too busy doloing to be useful. Between ignoring orders and being paralyzed, it took her 7 turns to KO it.

I hope this won't be the norm for the forest trek. Fortunately, it's not, and I get through the rest of the forest with no trouble. Crumpets also picked up Wing Attack, which is a huge plus, now that he has reliable STAB. Artemis' Chansey turns out to be good only at tanking hits; her Egg Bomb has pathetic power and hits less than half the time anyway. But it lets me do my job of dream-smashing more effectively.

Finally, we're at the end. With her cameo done, Artemis thanks me and leaves, and we go our separate ways: I go off to beat trainers in a humorous fashion, and she gets to watch (or read about it, rather). As I exit the forest, I catch a Buneary because I know Amity Square is racist.

Before Eterna City, there's just the matter of some fishermen. I let TorTERROR handle them. I could have sworn I got the Old Rod from one of them. Guess not. Time to go find that. (It's in Jubilife, apparently. I pick it up in chapter 4.)

Eterna City. Not bad. I start by going crazy looking for the bike shop and get lost. While lost, I end up running into Pride's wife, who says she's watching to see that everything's running smoothly. Surprised to see me as I am her, she gives me 2 things: HM01 and +h, saying I'll need them later, before going off.

I do find the bike shop, but the guy is absent at the Team Galactic building. Also I found App 6 for Poketch, and that an NPC will trade his Chatot for a Buizel. heh, sorry Teal.
welp, nothing to do but take on the gym!

<%DNA> !challenge
<@AmyKim> At my Gym, no one gets to battle with the Gym Leader - me - until they've beaten all the other Trainers. I'll be waiting for you in the back. Good luck, challenger!

I raise an eyebrow, recognizing her, and wonder where Jay is. I tried to ask, but she vanished into the gym before I could get a reply. Well, you know what that means.

Crumpets takes them all on with his usual class and finesse. With Wing Attack under his belt, he knocks them out effortlessly. Grass vs. Poison/Flying will do that. Finally, I catch up to Amy.

<%DNA> so, Pride cast you as Gardenia, huh?
<@AmyKim> well, not quite
<@AmyKim> he originally picked Anthony, but he said he was busy and asked me to do it instead.
<%DNA> so let me get this straight...
<%DNA> Pride asks Jay to test a game, but he bails and has his gf do it instead?
<@AmyKim> ...kinda, yeah
<%DNA> scumbag Jay
<@AmyKim> Teapot said the exact same thing

hey look, I'm not harassing Teapot for once

<%DNA> welp, nothing to it then
<%DNA> !challenge
<@AmyKim> You kept me waiting! I'm Eterna's Gym Leader, Gardenia, the Grass-type master! When I first saw you, I was convinced you'd find your way to me. My hunch was right on the money. You have a winning aura about you. So, anyway, this will be fun. Let's have our battle!
<%DNA> Your name isn't Gardenia
<@AmyKim> Oh, oops!

I anticipate a trend that all the future gym leaders are going to forget to replace the default name with their own. With that in mind, Amy, in place of Jay, fights me as the 2nd gym leader. She leads off with a lv. 19 Cherubi; I choose to start with Thorne and hoping she doesn't slack off too much. The lv. 19 Turtwig, and ultimately the lv. 22 Roserade, are taken care of quite easily by Thorne, especially when Roserade Stun Spores her and plays right into Guts. Aerial Ace OP.

And just as the battle is concluded, Thorne picks up Brick Break.

<Thorne> wow
<Thorne> if I knew battling was THIS fun, I would have paid more attention!
<Thorne> sorry about the slacking off, DNA. From this moment on, I'm your girl.
<TorTERROR> That didn't come out right...
<%DNA> I hope you don't change your mind by the time you hit level 30.
<Thorne> Get two more badges before then, and I won't!
<TorTERROR> Them trades, man. Nothing but trouble.
<Thorne> I can still hear you!
<Crumpets> Now now, do not disparage the young lady. It was a fair bout, and she has earned her victory.
<%DNA> ...yeah. Sorry Heracross roughed up your team, Amy. ...or Jay's team, I guess.
<%DNA> Do you have any idea where he might be? I bet he's hiding somewhere in the playthrough.
<@AmyKim> What are you going to do?
<%DNA> I'm going to pay him a...oh what's the word...
<@AmyKim> visit?
<TorTERROR> beating?
<%DNA> beating!
<%DNA> yeah
<%DNA> gonna pay him a beating
<%DNA> and if Teapot's around at the time he can join in

Somewhat resignedly, Amy gives me the Forest Badge, granting me ability to command trades up to lv. 30 without issue, and to use Cut outside of battle. She also throws in a TM86 Grass Knot, and asks me not to rough up Jay too hard. Out of respect to her, I promise to hold back.

"So, can we conclude this part of the run-through, my good man?" Crumpets asks after we walk outside into the crisp night air.
"Not quite yet," I reply. "There's still the matter of Team Galactic. We do have to kick them out of Eterna. Then we can call this bit a wrap, and move on to our next big thing."
"Oh, good," TorTERROR growls, scraping the ground with his foot. "I'm itching for a fight!"
"Before we do, though, since we have Cut, let's take the opportunity to get a few other things nearby."

I snag the Exp. Share from Rowan's assistant at Eterna's southern gate (I feel it'll come in handy later), a TM46 Thief behind the Galactic building, some berries on the Eterna Forest outside shortcut (plus Silverpowder and TM82 Sleep Talk around there too), and...

<Crumpets> We were on our way to their base of operations, but came here for a brief detour.
<Crumpets> It was a show of our newfound ability to cut down small trees.
<Geist> ugh
<Geist> I swear those things were fertilized with Miracle-Gro
<%DNA> the small trees?
<Geist> no, Team Galactic
<Geist> anyway, they're kinda screwing up the beta test right now
<Geist> also everyone hates them
<Geist> if you're gonna pummel them, can I come with?
<Geist> I'll try not to upset the bug very much
<Thorne> can I smack him again
<Thorne> just once, please. It'll make me feel better.
<%DNA> Calm your pheromones, Thorne. If you must, beat up on Galactic to let some steam off.
<%DNA> Welcome aboard, Geist.
<Geist> thanks man
<Geist> I'll pull my weight, I promise
<TorTERROR> you barely weigh anything
<%DNA> I think he knows.
<Geist> ^

Yeah, I raid the Old Chateau and come across a Gastly who goes by Geist. He reminds me a lot of myself, particularly the trolly bits. I'm not sure if he's serious about all this or what. I guess I'll find out eventually. He joined the team at lv. 14, and has a Calm nature. It definitely isn't detrimental, so I take it. (I did find a lv. 16 Gastly, but it was Brave. HAHAHAHA, NO)

I see neither the girl nor the butler, but I do pick up an Old Gateau, a Dread Plate, and TM90 Substitute while I'm here. But now, with Geist on board, I hand (?) him the Exp. Share and head to the Galactic building.

<TorTERROR> hey DNA, you remember the Galactic grunt right outside the Pokemon Center?
<TorTERROR> how he said that Team Galactic was so rich they just built themselves an HQ?
<%DNA> yeah, I remember him
<TorTERROR> well, this building looks really...low-budget.
<TorTERROR> it looks exactly the same as pretty much any multi-story building on the inside.
<%DNA> well, Platinum does make them richer
<Geist> well duh
<Geist> it's a precious metal worth a crapton. you could sell it for mucho dinero.
<%DNA> ...not that kind of platinum.

After noticing how peculiarly low-budget Team Galactic appears to be back in 2007, I proceed to climb the stairs and prepare to take out rage on every grunt in sight. I notice that the first two appear to be a male and female pair, when...

<%DNA> wait...wtf
<%DNA> redrain take that stupid wig and dress off
<RedRain> never
<RedRain> it makes me feel pretty
<%DNA> I don't care; it's emasculating
<RedRain> do you really want me to take this dress off right now, deary?
<%DNA> ...good point
<%DNA> it just makes my rage against you stronger
<%DNA> especially since you just said 'deary'
<%DNA> what are you, a cougar?
<RedRain> ...
<RedRain> you monster

The last thing he saw was TorTERROR stepping on his face. Don't worry. He'll be back. Galactic cloned him and TT about a jillion times. Or gave them an infinite respawn code, one of the two. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're on the next floor as well.

Yep, two pairs of them, sitting at desks. Hell, there was even a pair of them on the THIRD floor. Sweet; I just made five dollars off of Thorne. She still says I swindled her in a bet, but I say she wasn't paying enough attention.

The pair on the third floor was especially distasteful.

<RedRain> hey DNA can I have one of your Pokemon?
<RedRain> mine all suck
<%DNA> no
<RedRain> but...
<%DNA> no
<%DNA> stop asking
<%DNA> you're getting on my nerves; leave me alone
<%DNA> and get rid of that stupid dress!
*** RedRain was kicked by DNA (BOARGH)
<%DNA> oh
<%DNA> so THAT'S why I have hop
<TwistedTurtwig> I uhh...
<TwistedTurtwig> I'll just leave quietly now
<%DNA> good idea
*** TwistedTurtwig has left #eterna

Sure enough, they were not on the next (last) floor. The resident Galactic commander, however, was...and it definitely wasn't who I was expecting. Then again, I wasn't really expecting anyone, but in this case...

<Amt> what are you doing here?
<%DNA> wait what
<%DNA> I could ask you the very same question
<Amt> I'm trying to find a Furret around here, but the closest thing is Buneary, which isn't even a cheap substitute
<%DNA> Furret can't even be found around here; why would they? This isn't Johto
<Amt> ugh, Pride lied to me
<Amt> I guess I'll need to vent my frustration on you
<%DNA> I'd like to see you try - now bring it.

On the bad side, I have to fight Galactic Commander Jupiter Amt and I know she has a Skuntank just waiting to tear my team apart. On the good side, at least I now know that Amt isn't being cast as Maylene, as I had previously feared. But if she isn't, then who is?

The opener is a lv. 18 Zubat. To my surprise, TorTERROR opts to take the lead, saying he's hungry for blood, and swears twice at the Zubat before going after it. The Wing Attacks took off a chunk of HP, so when the lv. 20 Skuntank appears I drop a Potion. (I'm sensing a pattern here.) The Skuntank uses Smokescreen (I was predicting Night Slash), so this might be a little trickier. I go for Razor Leaf instead of Tackle, since even resisted it's a tiny bit stronger, but I know if Night Slash crits, I'm done for.

Through the weird AI, I find out the Skuntank's moveset is Night Slash, Smokescreen, Poison Gas, and Screech. It's Screeched twice now, so I tag out TorTERROR for Thorne, who laughs at the puny Night Slash. A single Brick Break takes out the remaining sixth of its HP, and a winner is Team Dolo!

Amt loses and drops a hint that Galactic is gathering energy and that the boss is interested in mythical Pokemon to become the ruler of Sinnoh. I tell her she doesn't need to read directly from the script, and she leaves to go find Furret somewhere else.

I rescue the guy who was there, who runs the bicycle shop. He said that TT told him to hand over his Clefairy, because it comes from space. He said 'o-kay...coo-coo' and then got slapped and taken hostage. I go by the Cycle Shop and the guy gives me a Bicycle as a favor for kicking RR and TT out of Eterna City, since he was way more annoyed by them than any of the others. I set the Bicycle to the Y button, heal up my team, and...I think it's a good time to end this part!

End of Chapter 3!
