DNA's Pokémon Pearl Dolo Run-Through
Chapter 4: This is Hopefully Not a Setup, Part 1
So I remembered that Route 211 is effectively a dead-end from the Eterna City side, so I go that way and train up my team some more before going south to double back to Oreburgh. The first trainer I see is a ninja boy, who thinks that screaming 'Zubat' sounds just like a ninja bursting from cover.
"So uncivilized," Crumpets notes, and we get to work.
TorTERROR apparently wasn't paying attention and got smacked with the boy's Zubat Supersonic. He then proceeded to trigger Quick Claw and hit himself in confusion, FOUR times in a row. It would have been 5, but after Quick Claw he snapped out of it. Thorne laughed at him, and TorTERROR angrily retorted with "SHUT UP WOMAN".
"So uncivilized," Crumpets notes, again.
Since I can't go through Mount Coronet from Route 211, we just do what we can (which amounts to only 3 trainers and a TM12 Taunt) and double back.
CYCLING ROAD WHEEEEEEEEEE
As with the class Kanto Cycling Road, it has the downhill mechanic, so I get to move slowly south if I don't end up doing anything. However, if I move north, I don't run into resistance like I do with Kanto. ...I think. And if I am, it's not much. Unfortunately, my steady downhill ride is interrupted by random cyclists, so I dream-smash so I can enjoy my ride in peace. While I do so, I am incredibly surprised to see that a lv. 17 Ponyta was actually outspeeding Crumpets, 2 levels higher than it.
On the way, Geist picks up Confuse Ray and makes a Pikachu kill itself. Already I'm proud of him.
I want to hit Wayward Cave next, but I have no idea where I can get TM70 Flash to explore it without going blind. Crumpets remarks that he needs no light, to which I respond that I'm not him. I think there's a hiker on the lower bit of Route 206 that gives it away. I'm also contemplating when to break this part off, since the next gym is waaaaaaaay far away. I don't think I'll go all the way to the gym in this part, just as a heads-up.
As I head to Oreburgh to heal my team, I see Bellomence, and she gives me the Vs. Seeker plus Poketch App 7 (Dowsing Machine), then walks off with a giggle. I'm guessing Pride sent her and she didn't want to stay long. I don't blame her.
Oh hey you can apparently get 1 each of Heal, Dusk, and Great Balls, and trade a Machop away to an NPC for an Abra, all in Oreburgh. Never knew that before. THE MORE YOU KNOW~
I go back to Jubilife, since I know the Old Rod is there, and probably a few Poketch apps. After that I'll go back to tackle Wayward Cave.
<Larry> Yes, sir! An Old Rod is a good thing!
<Larry> You think so too, am I right?
<%DNA> uh...I guess?
<%DNA> if you're trying to get a Magikarp for less than 500 yen
<Larry> Yes! Good answer! We can be friends!
<Larry> Here you go!
* Larry gives DNA his Old Rod.
<%DNA> uh, thanks
<%DNA> I'll be going somewhere else now...
Tricky devil was hiding on the gate going out west from Jubilife. While I'm here, I snag Poketch App 3 and battle an 'Idol Grace' who's working on a new album called "Jigglin' Pokemon Wub". I dunno about you, but I found that funny.
<%DNA> romance dubstep
<%DNA> seems legit
So let's see, now I have Poketch Apps 1-7:
1: Digital Watch
2: Calculator
3: Memo Pad
4: Pedometer
5: Pokemon List
6: Friendship Checker
7: Dowsing Machine
I will be due for new ones from the Poketch Company when I reach 3, 5, and 7 badges. That's still a ways off, so time to go back to what I wanted to do in the first place! I guess I can periodically post what Poketch apps I have, and where I get them. I think I'll do that at the end of each part from now on.
...I get to Wayward Cave but still no Flash. So, I go to consult the interwebs and see if it is indeed possible to get Flash before reaching Veilstone. ... ... ...Turns out it's in Oreburgh Cave (that little tiny cave west of Oreburgh that everyone forgets), so I guess it's time for me to make a quick detour, since I now have the bicycle to access half of it. (The other half needs Surf.) I snag TM70 Flash right away, and with the bike I can get TM31 Brick Break. I don't think I need it since Thorne learns it naturally, but it may help.
I decide to make a beeline for the back of the cave and rescue whoever the girl is, then fight all the trainers on the way out. It takes me a while, though, what with turning the wrong way a few times and getting assaulted by wilds with one of the most annoying battle musics I've ever heard. I play with the volume off for a while. It will probably help me keep my sanity.
I know on the way to the back of the cave you will fight zero trainers, but I thought the path back was a slightly jagged line. Turns out it's more of a slightly jagged sideways S, flipped vertically and then rotated right 90 degrees. Sure, I get to the back and I find M--
<+Teal> oh! DNA-kun~
<+Teal> I didn't expect to see you here!
<%DNA> that makes two of us. What's with the getup?
<+Teal> I was walking around and then I got lost...
<+Teal> I'm s-scared...
<+Teal> DNA-kun, t-take me out of this awful place~!
<%DNA> ...this is getting more perturbing by the minute
<%DNA> the difference between you and Red Rain is that I expected this from you
<%DNA> why can't you just get out yourself? It's not like Pokemon dungeon mazes are hard at all.
<+Teal> B-but I'll feel safer if I have a p-partner to go with!
* Teal tugs on DNA-kun's sleeve
<+Teal> take me with you, DNA-kun~
<%DNA> if it will stop your whining and clinging, then fine.
* DNA sigh
<Geist> all the single ladies
<Geist> all the single ladies
--y creepy Austrian friend dressed up as Mira. Knowing who he is, this honestly doesn't surprise me very much. Neither does Geist's response, because it sounds like something I'd say.
I'm hoping desperately this isn't a hentai setup, so I escort Teal out of the cave, hoping that his cameo will be over sooner than later. On the way I take advantage of the opportunity and smack every trainer in sight, grab all the items, and get to use my Dowsing Machine some. Teal refuses to let go of my sleeve until we're out of the cave. She He comes with a lv. 18 Kadabra, but that's still 1 level lower than my lowest-leveled team member, so I don't find it that impressive. However, it does one-shot everything with Confusion (or Shock Wave), so at least it's more useful than the Chansey.
The next bit is just me going through the cave and beating up the trainers and collecting hidden items (the only one of note was TM32 Double Team), so I'll skip that. Oh, also, the bit to catch Gible in Wayward Cave requires the use of Strength, which I don't have yet (and can't use unless I have a whopping SIX badges), but I'm not aiming for a Garchomp in this playthrough, so no big deal! Though I do remember a good item being down there...
While we were training, Crumpets ended up hitting lv. 21, and in so doing acquired a whole new toy to force suicide with. He expressed his exuberance appropriately.
He then promptly regained his composure.
Some time later...
<+Teal> Oh! There's the exit!
<+Teal> thank you so much DNA-kun~
<%DNA> for the 15th time, let go of my sleeve
<+Teal> b-but I feel so safe around you, DNA-kun~
<%DNA> this is not a doujin; now let me go
<%DNA> it's not that you like me or anything, baka
<+Teal> Fine...
<+Teal> ...big meanie...
*** Teal has left #waywardcave
Well, that was annoying. Oh well, back to business! From here, to Route 207, through Mount Coronet (well, a tiny bit of it), and all the way to Hearthome, and I'll call this chapter there. Upon exiting Wayward Cave, I notice that Crumpets is much larger, and even appears to have visible eyes...and feet.
"I daresay, good chap," I remark, "you appear to have undergone a most fortuitous transformation."
"Indeed, noble sir," he answers. "Verily, I feel my classiness has been even further accentuated. And for you to give me this chance to display my abilities, you have my gratitude."
"So basically, you're just better at dream-smashing," TorTERROR chimes in.
"Well, to put it so crudely, yes, my photosynthetic companion."
"Then let us away to the next landmark of interest," I finish. "Onward!"
The best part about having a Grass starter is that if he ever gets hurt, you can just find a Geodude and use Absorb to get all your HP back. That's what I did after accidentally sending out TorTERROR against a Chimchar. whoo \o/
I clean out the Route 207 trainers and enter Mount Coronet. As I do so, I get a premonition that I'm going to have a rival fight really soon, probably as soon as I enter Hearthome City. I'm concerned, somewhat, but this is also a prime opportunity to harass Teapot again. I'm about halfway to the other side of this small room, when some guy who I'm not sure who he is mentions a myth that Mount Coronet was the origin of the Sinnoh region. He's mostly talking to himself, and states that because the human spirit is weak, strife is everywhere, and he finds the state of things to be deplorable.
I opt not to interrupt as I don't want to get into a philosophical debate with whoever this weirdo is. Sadly, he notices me, and I think he said "DNA <3" right before he walked off. I get extremely uncomfortable and high-tail it to the opposite end on my bicycle as fast as I can go.
<Thorne> wait
<Thorne> who was that guy?
<TorTERROR> one of DNA's many fanboys, I'll bet
<Geist> DNA has fanboys?
<Geist> he kinda struck me as having a really big fangirl club instead
<Geist> but seriously who was that guy?
<%DNA> I don't know and I don't think I want to know
<%DNA> whoever he is, he must know me from somewhere...
<%DNA> and I don't think I want to run into him again.
<Thorne> someone's in love~
<Geist> and I'm pretty sure it's the other guy
<Geist> or you
<Thorne> ...shut it
I silently thank Geist for shutting Thorne up, because I wasn't in the mood to deal with that kind of talk either. Geist was right, by the way; I do have a really big fangirl club.
I am thankful to be out in the bright open air again; though the cave had nice overworld music, the atmosphere was rather dreary. And right away, I get challenged by a hiker that laughs at how he is a big man, and that a 'little kid' like me couldn't beat him. Geist gladly puts him in his place. In fact, Geist ends up handling a lot of the trainers on this route. I think he's anxious to evolve, just like Crumpets. ...Far be it from me to get in the way of that, because after all, Gengar is the master of badassery.
Then there was another hiker that said "If I beat you, will you share some food with me?" ...are we sure that this is a hiker and not a hobo? This is actually somewhat disturbing, though not as disturbing as clingy Teal. Nor was it as annoying as what happened right after:
<%DNA> oh sweet, it's an item behind some rocks
<%DNA> sounds promising
<%DNA> Slave 0, use Rock Smash.
* DNA picks up the item
<%DNA> ...it's a Poke Ball
<%DNA> an ordinary Poke Ball, that I had to use Rock Smash to get to
<Geist> waw waw
"I daresay, my incorporeal colleague," Crumpets notes of Geist, "you do seem to be quite skilled in the art of confusion-induced suicide. You may even surpass me at this discipline."
"Just doing my job, no big deal," Geist answers, brushing it off after licking a Combee to knock it out. I bet it tasted good. I was too busy talking to the Berry Master who moved to Sinnoh from Hoenn, and then this really shady Black Belt who handed me this Odd Keystone.
Oh, and of course, the "My Pokémon is Fight!" line.
After that, I enter Hearthome and this random Buneary runs into me. I can hear a small but audible thud that some people would probably find cute. Its trainer, an Idol, comes running up shortly thereafter and thanks me for being there to stop her Buneary from running away, thud or otherwise. She introduces herself as Keira, a Contest Judge, and asks me to drop by the Contest Hall so she can thank me properly.
I can hear TorTERROR whistling and Geist telling me to ask for her number. I ignore them both. Instead, I go get the egg from the guy at the southeast bit of the city. I think this hatches into a Wynaut or something...? I dunno, but I pick it up. It's for collection, basically. Then I head for the Pokemon Center to heal my team up.
I was expecting to fight Teapot soon, but I didn't see him anywhere. Welp, this part has gone on long enough, so time to break it off!
Next time I'll start off with exploring Hearthome City and going off on more wacky adventures.
End of Part 4!
