DNA's Pokémon Pearl Dolo Run-Through
Chapter 7: This Game is Too Confusing and Backwards
I'm really glad to find out that after leaving Pastoria I'm not accosted by anybody. That basically gives me free reign to leave and head for Route 212, which I do immediately. It's always pouring on that route, but what I also notice is the trainers' Pokemon are lower still, averaging around lv. 19, thus confirming my hypothesis that you're meant to go the other way and they never fixed the level scaling for that.
welp, here's a list of non-Berry items that I found in the rainy bit:
- Hyper Potion, Ether, and Rare Candy - All hidden in the mud puddle to the north right as you enter the route
- Zinc - On a ledge right above the weather woman's house (cross the bike ledge at the very start of the route to get there)
- X Special - Near a scientist on the way to the Zinc
- TM06 Toxic - Just to the east of the giant mud puddle in the middle of the route (with all the trainers and stuff)
- Revive - On a path right below the bike ledge
- TMs: 11 Sunny Day, 18 Rain Dance, 37 Sandstorm, or 07 Hail - Swap the weather woman for 10 Red, Blue, Yellow, or Green shards respectively (infinite supply)
- TinyMushroom - From the fishermen, use Cut, then cross 2 bike ledges (hidden item)
- TM62 Silver Wind - Cross a bike ledge right by a schoolboy
- Antidote - Near to a scientist on the southwest bit of the route, by some puddles
and the non-rainy bit:
- Elixir - Next to a Trainer Tips sign, right as it stops raining
- TM11 Sunny Day - Just north of the pond (requires Cut)
- ??? - Requires Surf (I'll get to it later)
This route also marks the debut of policemen, who I swear are the exact same people as the Hyrule Castle guards in Minish Cap. They have the same ears and everything. Like joggers, they will only fight at a certain time of day, except it's at night, much like they did in GSC. I also get to test out TorTERROR's Earthquake in Doubles, pairing him with Geist (though Crumpets can also work). The results were wonderful.
On the path through, Aphrodite evolved after knocking out some conveniently placed Geodude - seriously, what was that Collector thinking, fighting with Geodudes in the rain?
<%DNA> well, that didn't take long. Grats.
<Aphrodite> thanks
<Aphrodite> I'll have more in store, don't you worry~
<Aphrodite> tell me, have you ever had a Gastrodon with you before?
<%DNA> Yes. His name was Marco.
<Aphrodite> Marco?
<Geist> POLO
I can always count on Geist to formulate clever distractions. I swear that Gastrodon kept winking at me.
Route 212 is also home to the Pokemon Mansion, who as some of you may remember is home to the Trophy Garden, home to some rare specimens of Pokemon that are very hard to find (or, in some cases, impossible) to find elsewhere, though that extra functionality is post-game. I doubt there's anything of note in here, but it never hurts to look.
...I stand corrected. The Soothe Bell and TM87 Swagger can be found here. ...along with a Great Ball and Burn Heal, but whatever. I could have used that Soothe Bell earlier when trying to evolve Crumpets, but that's water under the bridge now.
I finish, and I'm back at Hearthome. Maybe Dustin will suck it up and let me challenge him already. I go the gym and...the elevator is still not operational. I ask the guy and he says the gym leader isn't here and will be back later. No hints as to when, though. Now I have to look around.
I dread that the requirement to get the gym to open is to perform a Pokemon Contest. I really am hoping that isn't it, but it might be, so I have to take the chance. Crumpets volunteers to be the partner, since he is the classiest member on my team, and we tackle a Cool contest.
<Crumpets> I do say, my good man. You look most excellent in that tuxedo.
<%Hazama> Well, it's not often I get to wear this, so might as well make the most of it.
The MC's name is Dexter and TorTERROR is already snickering quietly to himself. I pray this will be over soon. It takes me a while to straighten the mustache accessory, and I realize that it's not like BW, where the accessories are in set places, so I waste about 5 seconds. The audience didn't like Crumpets very much, but what can I say? They're uncultured. Crumpets ends up getting 3rd, but why am I surprised? I'm not here to win a contest.
*checks gym*
No, that wasn't it either. Hmm... *checks Internet*
I have to visit Celestic Town first? Dangit! I don't want to deal with Meaty right now. I fly there, and...
<%DNA> move
<Meaty> vanguard
<%DNA> no
<Meaty> then no
<%DNA> ffs
I go find my only other lead - the Galactic guy with the bomb in Pastoria City. Sure enough, he runs off in the direction of Lake Valor, and he tells me not to follow him. I think 'lolno' and give chase, because bombs are very bad. Each time I run into him, he plays it smart and just keeps running away. I think he recognized that I beat up every Galactic grunt I see, and he doesn't want to chance it. He bolts on me, and...
<PDC> who's there
<PDC> oh crap
<PDC> DNA
<PDC> I'm going to lose
* PDC runs
*** PDC has left #pastoria
Wait, what the heck is PDC doing with Team Galactic? Nothing to it but to follow him, I guess, but suddenly...
<+Teapot> DNA WAIT UP
<%DNA> teapot what do you want
<%DNA> can this wait?
<+Teapot> I built a new team; can you help me test it?
<+Teapot> Everyone else in this game is too weak
<%DNA> teapot
<%DNA> I am trying to chase down pdc who I think is holding a bomb
<%DNA> a BOMB
<%DNA> and you want me to slow up just to test your stupid team?
<+Teapot> well when you put it that way...
<+Teapot> wait why does pdc have a bomb
<%DNA> You know what, screw this.
<%DNA> Break out your team, right here, right now.
<%DNA> I am going to wallop you so hard that you will never want to challenge me again.
<%DNA> And that way when the bomb goes off and I don't get there in time,
<%DNA> it'll be YOUR fault for being an overenthusiastic scumbag.
<+Teapot> fine, sorry I asked
<%DNA> you'd better be
<%DNA> now bring it on so I can wallop you
And thus the master of making people feel bad drags Teapot into a fight. His opener is a lv. 26 Starly. I was expecting at least a Staravia by this point. I led with Aphrodite, and he switches out the Starly for a lv. 25 Roselia. No big deal; I just switch out Aphrodite for Crumpets, who makes short work of it. (I also find out that Aphrodite has Hidden Power Bug. This may be handy to remember for later.)
He switches back to the Starly, and I leave Crumpets in because he's already in a good position. Cross Poison takes care of it, so he's down to 2 now. He sends in a lv. 25 Buizel, and I OHKO it with TorTERROR. That just leaves his lv. 28 Monferno. To Teapot's surprise, I don't switch TorTERROR out.
<+Teapot> lol misplay
<+Teapot> you left your Torterra in
<+Teapot> that's gonna cost you
* TorTERROR Quick Claw
* TorTERROR Earthquake
<TorTERROR> you were saying?
yes that actually happened
<+Teapot> FFFUUU
<+Teapot> HAX
<+Teapot> I CALL HAX
<%DNA> you're one to talk, after you beat AoH and apparently bacon using hax too
<+Teapot> bacon didn't say anything about hax
<%DNA> he had a freaking GYARADOS. there's no way you beat him with a crappy team like that.
<%DNA> anyway I'm out
<%DNA> learn to teambuild or gtfo
*** DNA has left #pastoria
<+Teapot> ...
<+Teapot> I should have known I can't win
<+Teapot> against based TorTERROR >_<
I get back to my life which involves apprehending a potential terrorist. Sure enough, I catch up and he runs off. This goes on for a while. He's almost at the lake and by this time he's fed up, so he sends out his lone lv. 25 Glameow out against me.
...lol
<PDC> I know I'm going to lose
<PDC> leave me alone
<%DNA> what makes you so sure?
<PDC> because
<PDC> I can't beat
<PDC> the based TorTERROR
<%DNA> ...this is true
<PDC> yeah I'm not even going to try
* PDC runs
while I beat his Pokemon up, he ran off towards the lake, and when I get there, apparently so is Pride's wife, who is reading up on the Lake Valor folklore, apparently. She then gives me a small package, a request from Pride, and walks off. When I ask her what's in it, she says she isn't sure, but I'll know what to do with it when I see it. Okay then.
Before I open it, I see those two scientist guys still there.
<%DNA> excuse me sirs, may I please pass?
<Scientist01> sorry, but the lake isn't open to the public right now
<%DNA> I saw a small child come this way
<%DNA> and I'm fairly certain he's a terrorist
<%DNA> because I'm pretty sure his package has a bomb in it
<%DNA> A BOMB
<%DNA> can you at least let me in so I can get rid of the bomb?
<Scientist02> How on earth are you going to get rid of or disarm a bomb?
<Geist> I will eat it.
<Scientist01> even so, you don't know if that guy had a bomb
<%DNA> it's Team Galactic, ffs
<%DNA> they're always trying to mess up someone's day
<%DNA> and doesn't the thought of a child with violent tendencies holding a bomb WORRY YOU?
<%DNA> especially since it's PDC
<Scientist02> be that as it may, we still can't let you through.
<%DNA> if you two are RR and TT
<%DNA> I swear I will murder you.
<%DNA> Give me your hands.
<Scientist01> I know we're standing next to each other, but we don't roll that way
<%DNA> HANDS. NOW.
After noticing their hands show no signs of splinters, I let them alone and go off to look at what's in the package that Pride's wife gave me. I open it, and it's a deck of Vanguard cards.
Yes, I know exactly what to do with this.
<Meaty> back with Vanguard yet?
<%DNA> yes
* DNA holds up Vanguard deck
<%DNA> complete with...
* DNA looks at the name of one of the cards
<%DNA> Workerpod, Saturday
<%DNA> ...
<%DNA> who the crap comes up with these names
<Meaty> idk
<Meaty> anyway, we're going to play Vanguard now?
<%DNA> not yet
<%DNA> I found some guy who I'm pretty sure is carrying a bomb
<%DNA> so I have to hunt him down
<%DNA> for now, hold onto these cards so they don't get damaged
<%DNA> and I'll meet up with you later.
<Meaty> cool
<Meaty> in return, can you deliver something for me?
<Meaty> I think someone at the town up the road dropped this old charm
<%DNA> sure
<%DNA> I'll go deliver this and then come find you
<Meaty> then we play Vanguard?
<%DNA> if I find you, yes?
<Meaty> sweet, see you then
(I'm not going to go look for him lol)
Okay, with that distraction taken care of, time to head up to Celestic Town and drop this charm off. I know the route has Defog and probably rocks to smash, so I leave Aphrodite in the box and bring Slaves 0 and 1 with me. Right past Meaty is this large field of tall grass. I see some of the tiles look different and I think of the Mimic Circle from Gen 3. Close: it's the Ninja Trio, but the same principle applies. ...except they don't mimic your every move.
Past them, the route is shrouded in deep fog, so use Defog to blow it away (if you don't, deep fog in battle lowers accuracy of all moves by about 20%). There isn't much exciting, but the ninja boys are cute when they fail and the items are generally getting better (I found a Hyper Potion and Ultra Ball). Of note are TM30 Shadow Ball (over some ledges) and a Smoke Ball (right past a ninja boy - figures).
For Celestic Town, I'm just here to deliver something; I will do a more detailed report on the town itself later. Some old lady said that there was a spaceman threatening to blow up the town with a bomb. Well, I know where I'm going.
<%DNA> there you are
<PDC> dammit DNA
<PDC> why do you have to follow me
<PDC> and let me do my own thing
<%DNA> need I remind you that you're threatening to use a BOMB?
<PDC> but this place sucks
<PDC> like
<PDC> its only purpose is for a stupid sidequest
<%DNA> and if you blow it up I'll never be able to FINISH that stupid sidequest
<%DNA> just put the bomb down all right?
<PDC> no
<PDC> this time
<PDC> I can beat
<PDC> the based TorTERROR
<%DNA> ...Beautifly and Croagunk
<PDC> which counter TorTERROR
<%DNA> but are wrecked by Crobat
<PDC> you use a Crobat??
<%DNA> ...yes...
<PDC> I can't win
<PDC> dammit
He said more, but I can't repeat it here. PG-13 and all. He then left in a huff. Then this other old woman comes up, and I give her the old charm. (NO NOT THAT KIND OF OLD CHARM) In return, she gives me HM03 Surf. sweet \o/ After the next badge I can use Surf. I'm about to fly there, when...
<Zero> hey DNA
<Zero> <3
<%DNA> what in the hell
<%DNA> okay why are YOU here
<%DNA> I thought you were off busy having a life of some sort
<%DNA> and get a haircut already
<Zero> no you
<%DNA> I did
<Zero> that's nice
<%DNA> now answer my question
<Zero> Oh, nothing much
<Zero> just hanging around, seeing the sights
<Zero> how about you?
<%DNA> fulfilling a small sidequest
<%DNA> now that I finished it, I will be on my way
<%DNA> see you at...I dunno, regs or whatever
<Zero> I don't go to those anymore
<%DNA> oh yeah that's right
<%DNA> well, see you...eventually, I guess
<Zero> k
<Zero> see you DNA
SIDEQUEST OVER TIME FOR THE GYM
After I get this badge I can use Surf. I go back to the gym, and sure enough, the elevator is in working order. I have to answer math questions to advance to the next bit of the gym, but since I like exp, I'm going to go battle all the trainers anyway. I walk in and notice I have not been very observant.
<+The-Kaiser> hey DNA
<%DNA> wait how long have you been there
<%DNA> I get surprised by each new person I see so I might as well ask this time
<+The-Kaiser> I'm the gym guy
<+The-Kaiser> I've been at the start of every gym so far
<%DNA> wow. I feel bad for not having noticed.
<%DNA> doesn't surprise me too much, though; you seem like that kind of guy.
<+The-Kaiser> yup ^_^
<+The-Kaiser> I can see you've been doing well
<%DNA> Yeah, this marks badge #5. I assume I'll see you at the next few gyms, yes?
<+The-Kaiser> yeah
<+The-Kaiser> I've been traveling around; it's really nice here
<%DNA> that it is
<+The-Kaiser> well Good Luck with the gym, DNA
<%DNA> Thank you. I shall be sure to return triumphant.
It's a Ghost-type gym, but I trade off the fighting duty between Geist and a few other members on the team. Ghost is weak to Ghost, and that goes both ways, so I don't want him to get hurt too much.
There's 4 floors worth, so I decide to start at the back and work my way forward, in case I need to heal my team. Since their Pokemon are around level 30 and I'm in the low-30s, that may happen a few times. One NPC trainer said "Why can't you answer the quiz correctly? It would save us all some time. Now I have to smack you around a bit."
I said "You have it backwards" and proceed to dream-smash. After the match, he said "I kinda deserved that, didn't I?"
<NPC> I'll remember you and your shifty Pokemon. I'm watching you...
<Geist> k
Yes, those are the actual lines. I bring them in when they're amusing.
After clearing everyone out, I'm finally at the gym leader. I've been waiting for this...mostly because I can use Surf now. \o/
<%DNA> !challenge
<@Dustin_DeVine> Ohohoho!!
<@Dustin_DeVine> Finally, you have arrived! Since I came to this country, always I try to learn new things. They hold Contests in this city? I say to myself, enfin, I will excel. That is why I dress this way. C'est une performance! Also, I study Pokémon very much. I have come to be Gym Leader. And, uh, so it shall be that you challenge me. But I shall win. That it what a Gym Leader does, non?
<%DNA> Sorry to break it to you, but the only thing gym leaders do is lose, especially to the protagonist.
<%DNA> And I get that you like Drifblim, but did you have to wear a dress?
<@Dustin_DeVine> It was the only thing in my size.
<%DNA> I won't ask.
<%DNA> Either way, French accents or otherwise, it's time we squared off!
Dustin opens with a lv. 32 Drifblim - I honestly predicted that opener. I lead with the tried-and-true Crumpets, who ties Drifblim in level. Again, he plays cautiously, starting with Confuse Ray, seeing what it will do. It hit itself once, and then flinched twice from Bite, before Dustin applies a Hyper Potion. But the cycle repeats, and Drifblim doesn't get a single move off, though it does wound Crumpets with Aftermath.
Dustin skips straight to his strongest, a lv. 36 Mismagius, higher than TorTERROR at lv. 34. As expected, it's faster, and it Psybeams TorTERROR, but...it gets Wood Hammered after that. You can guess the result. His final is a lv. 34 Gengar, so Geist (two levels lower) asks to take it on. I beg him to be careful, and he is - he starts with Confuse Ray. The other Gengar is faster, however, though it opens with Poison Jab instead.
<Geist> SUCKER PUNCH
<%DNA> I knew there was a reason I kept that around.
<@Dustin_DeVine> This isn't good...
<@Dustin_DeVine> Never give up, never surrender!
Yes, Fantina actually does quote Galaxy Quest as one of her closing lines. Geist attempts Sucker Punch again, though it messes up, but the Gengar hit itself in confusion, again. The next Sucker Punch hit true, and thus Geist proved himself to be the more awesome. And he picked up Shadow Ball as well! Finally, he has a better option than Shadow Punch. This shall be fun!
Dustin is amazed, even dumbfounded, at my strength, and finds my power admirable. He bestows upon me the Relic Badge (which lets me use Surf AW YISS) and a gift of TM65 Shadow Claw, to be used on someone, maybe. I thank him for the match, even though it was a little one-sided, but it was a nice little spar. With that, it's time for me to head to the next badge, and bring this part to a close.
End of Chapter 7!
