E3 2012 Discussion Thread

No mention of the new Smash Bros. disappointed me, but I'm still so excited for the Wii U I can live with it. Project-P 100, Pikmin 3, Batman, Super Mario Bros. U, heck, even Nintendoland if it's a pack in will all be worth it for me. The 3DS is looking great too, I love Paper Mario, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion (I beat the original 8 times), it all looks incredible.

I need some money :(.

I've only gotten to look at the Xbox E3. Haven't made it to the Nintendo one yet. /: Halo 4 looks pretty sweet and the Spliter Cell game looks really smooth. (even though I usally watch someone play those games, still looks great) And the whole glass thing looks neat, but I'll wait till I can actually try it out my self. Also, I guess they're getting rid of Zune and changing it to Xbox Music? Other than that, I was kind of sad the rest of the E3 for Xbox. The new Fable game looks like a joke and the other kinect game (Wreckem-something) looks really lame.
Can't wait to watch Nintendo E3. Sounds like they did good.

The highlights this year for me were Halo 4, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed 3. Ubisoft (the latter two titles), really stole the show for me. I may wait for the new SSB to come out for the Wii U before I pick up the system (as I did with the Wii)...I'm really in no hurry at all to buy a new system and wouldn't mind waiting years.

I don't mean to be a troll, but it seems like Nintendo are really running out of ideas for their "New" Super Mario Bros. games

Not trolling at all; it's a valid opinion, shared by the esteemed editors of Nintendo World Report as well as others. Of course, I disagree with it. :p

But I wouldn't say running out of ideas as much as it along the lines of DLC; mostly, the big big new stuff simply consists of more levels. And that's great in my book. Nintendo's level designers are the best in the industry; I'd gladly pay full price for a good 64 levels, plus those few new powerups and modes.

You have to consider that at this stage of the franchise, it's simply expansion on the classic concepts. You could argue that Nintendo's running out of ideas for Pokémon, when in reality, they're still expanding the games rather well (with the exception of an ice cream Pokémon... does ANYONE approve of that? I mean... I've yet to find more than one fan artists drawing anyone from that evolution line).

I don't know about them "running out of ideas" but I'm certain after this last E3 that there are tons of people that don't want to see another 2D classic Mario side-scroller for a long long long time (myself included). It's great to have a couple games here and there but I think they've really milked it by now.

Each person who thinks this is immediately countered by 1000+ of this, though:

...Basically, 2D Mario is their safest possible card and giving the Wii U one at launch is literally the smartest thing they could ever do.

I agree. Compare this to the 3DS, whose launch titles were garbage, and giving the Wii U a Mario title on launch is like Christmas.

It's obvious that Nintendo doesn't want to go through another launch fiasco like they did with the 3DS, so they're making sure that consumers have options at launch that will be guaranteed to be well-received. And Mario is one of them.

Safest. Sure. Smartest? Well...not really. I mean, I love Mario just as much as the next guy and the games are always platform sound, but it is getting tiring now and that's something that can't be denied unless you're a little kid and this is like your first/second/third 2D Mario game. When a 2D Mario game is one of the only good games at a console launch, that's not really better than having no games to be honest. That's what it felt like to me when I saw E3. :F

Really?

Really?

Sure? :>

I cant wait for Assasins Creed III. I am getting it for Xbox 360, and hope that it is as awesome as it looks ^^

honestly, I always try to play new Mario games, especially the 2D ones. I absolutely love 2D platformers and there's been a dearth of them since the advent of polygonal modeling. I've never really cared if they're slightly similar; they're still super fun.

also, these are the third and fourth 2D Super Mario Bros. games since Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island in 1995. I really don't call that oversaturation. a lot of people accuse Nintendo of oversaturating their franchises, but...
  • 19 Super Mario games since 1981 (31 years)
  • 16 Zelda games since 1986 (26 years)
  • 11 Metroid games since 1986 (26 years)

the only supersaturated franchise I'd say Nintendo has is Pokemon, and that's mostly because of the release of multiple versions.

Yep.

Iirc:
GBA has zero new real Mario games.
DS/DS lite/DSi/DSi XL have one Mario 2D game.
3DS has one 3D game and one 2D game coming up.
64 has one 3D game.
GC has one 3D game.
Wii has two new 3D games and one 2D game.

Too much? Umm! Not for me!

Maybe too much isn't the right word. It's more a matter of how quickly they're being released. Four games in a time span of six years (three of which released in a three year span) is not my preferred idea. I would love it if they spread them out a little bit more is all (and not show two in the same conference because that really detracts the focus and fun away from them).
