RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 13 - Help pick our new teammate!

Chapter 16: Cool tree battle!

Before we left town and headed on our way to rescue Tiki, IE spied a lance available at the market and picked it up on a whim. She must have seen her dad playing with one and decided to follow in his footsteps.

Ice Espeon evolved into Great Lord!

Tiki's location was in the northern part of the continent. She was trapped in a shrine that happens to be at the top of a huge tree, with soldiers guarding the roots of the tree that led to a staircase within the trunk. They were led by a man with a very impressive mustache, but we resolved to defeat them all just the same.

The battlefield was a twisted labyrinth of tree roots riddled with soldiers. We split up into pairs and fanned out to try and control all the passageways. Light stayed in the middle to provide healing as needed, while Cinesra took Drohn up on his horse and I stayed together with IE. The others stayed in their usual groups, and we quickly rushed their positions. We weren't fast enough to avoid the reinforcements, however, and TT and Palutena headed back to cover our rear while the others regrouped to combat the new foes and IE and I snuck up to take care of their general. IE gave him a grievous wound, but he fled before dying, and the path to the stairs was open to us.

<Porygon> Tiki, my lady! You are unharmed?
<Tiki> *snort* Zzzzz, hmm? Oh, hey Porygon. Yeah, just taking a nap.
<IE> It's a pleasure to meet you lady.
<Tiki> *yawn* Marth, is that you?
<IE> Uh, no, I'm IE and this is my dad, Drohn.
<Tiki> But you guys are of the exalted bloodline, yes?
<Drohn> Yep. I got the magical tattoo to prove it and everything.
<Tiki> That must mean you have the Fire Emblem, too!
<Drohn> Oh, yeah, that macguffin thing. I use it as a shield because, well, it's shield-shaped. And I couldn't think of a reason to not use it as a shield.
<Tiki> Huh, I only see one of the gems, Whitey. There should be 5. See? It's got holes for them in everything.
<Drohn> Oh, weird, I never noticed that before.
<Tiki> You need to collect all the rest of the gems and use the Fire Emblem to perform the Awakening!
<Keeper> Hey, that must be where the name of this game comes from!
<Drohn> Whoa, whoa, back up a bit. That sounds like some pretty heavy plot stuff. We're just saving you so you can help us save Valm and end the brutal regime of Conqueror DNA.
<Tiki> Pfft, I don't give a crap about any of that stuff. When you live for thousands of years, one dictator is just like any others. What I really care about is Grima, and in order to kick his ass for good, you need to get the rest of the gems and do the Awakening thing. There are 4 more. Be a good main characters and complete this fetch quest for me. Here, I'll even help you out by giving you one of the remaining 4, Bluey.
<Porygon> I think my brother has one of those.
<CJ> Ferox used to have one, but, uh, I lost it in a poker game.
<IE> Dad, I think you should listen. All that terrible crap that happened in my world was because of Grima. So, we should totes do this thing. Totes.
<Drohn> Alright, alright, cool, we'll do the fetch quest. And since it seems like Kecleon has one of the gems, it seems like we'll have to work on defeating DNA still too. So, will you help us with that?
<Tiki> Well, there's not that much I can do until I'm fully awake, but I might join you in a chapter or two. In the meantime, I'll, uh, pray for you. Sure. That sounds good.
<Athena> Well, any help is useful, thanks.
<Tiki> Oh, hey, cool, you have power like mine.
<Athena> You mean you're a tactician, too? :O
<Tiki> Ahahahahaha no. Anyway, I'm still waking up, so excuse me, time for my dragon coffee.
<Drohn> So, Porygon, what's our next move?
<Porygon> Well, DNA's portion of the army is in the north and my brother's is in the south. They're both pretty huge, but the third army in the middle is the smallest. Their headquarters is at this fort that we could siege.
<Athena> Alright, I'll work up a plan and we'll head there next.
<Porygon> Cool. Hopefully some of the resistance fighters will help us out, too, now that Tiki is rescued.

And so, we headed back down the tree and began our march towards Fort Steiger, the location of our next battle.

<PMJ> Hey, Drac, can we talk to you for a moment?
<Drac> Of course, pretty one!
<PMJ> Minerva and I wanted to thank you. She told me the story of how you turned against your fellow employees and rescued her after her mother was killed.
<Drac> Ah, yes, Drac thought Minerva was the same as little baby wyvern, but not sure. You are muchly welcome, pretty wyvern lady. Drac understands the hurts of losing parents.
<PMJ> You do? :O
<Drac> Yes, is sad story. But do not cry! Drac is weak for weeping pretty ladies.
<PMJ> Well, thank you again. It's been a pleasure fighting with you. ^_^
<Drac> See? Smiles are much better, yes? ^_^

Decisions, Decisions:

We get to pick another character to join the party! (update)

People seem to be either dead-set on Nah, or too apathetic to vote and/or change their votes, so I guess we're sticking with that. SylveonsandEspurrs has also been nominated to take her place. I'm still working on building supports between Celever and Keeper, but we'll play that lever as soon as it comes.

We've gotten a single vote so far to do the Hot Spring DLC after Nah's recruitment.

Player Notes:

This really is one of my favourite levels in terms of aesthetics. Very fun design.

Mostly focused this chapter on leveling IE, Celever, and PMJ and Drac, and also evening out some of our other party members. Now that a lot of people are getting up to Lv. 5 in their promoted classes we're starting to see some more skills. We're also starting to see a lot more promoted enemies which will make leveling go faster.

Having an uneven party is kind of annoying, but I'm mostly solving the issue by letting Light stay by herself to mostly act as our mobile healer. Drohn was under-leveled compared to Athena, so Athena got to be IE's back-end support while Cinesra supported Drohn. I'll probably flop it back next chapter so Athena can get some level-ups, too, and put Celever in back so Keeper can also get some better exp.

Otherwise, things are mostly progressing smoothly. Celever's still the weakest at actually killing things, unless you count Keeper trying to use a sword, which I haven't even bothered with because I know how ineffective it is. Hell, Tharja's almost his match in strength and she's a magic-only class. Keeper is a bit slow like his girlfriend, too, so I gave him one of the two Celica's Gales that we have, but otherwise effective. Cinesra is up to a D in swords and Drac has a D in axes. I'm also working on Drohn, PMJ, and IE getting lance ranks, but it's slow going. Gaius occasionally heals, but he's still not hit a D rank; it's mostly an emergency thing. On the other hand, Light is kicking ass and already has a C in tomes, even though she mostly just counter attacks. I guess enemy AI still wants to go after the healer, even though she can wreck their faces. The biggest problem is that her def is pitifully low; a single hit generally takes her down to <10 HP. Thankfully, she dodges as if she were a myrmidon instead of a prissy lady on a horse.

"We've gotten a single vote so far to do the Hot Spring DLC after Nah's recruitment."

I also voted for the Spring Post #152, and if it's not official enough, I vote after Nah's recruitment :p

I vote S&E for Nah's part.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 16

What you voted for was the Hot Spring Scrambled Eggs. :p But, sure, I'll put you down for another vote for that, though it'll be a while it looks like.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 16

<Keeper> Hey, that must be where the name of this game comes from!
This.

And then I read something really offensive about being slow and unable to use a sword. How rude.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 16

All Athena ever says about me is how I'm bad at killing things and awful at moving quickly anyway! Why do we even hang around with her, Keeper?

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 16

Because I simply can't sit out such a beautiful war!
Just wait, Athena will see my next trick... Summoning an army of Risen myself! That'll be fun!
(Pssst Athena, build our support level.)

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 16

Keeper shouldn't be allowed near pointy things anyway, and Manaketes are pretty slow by default; it's probably the worst thing about that class since it's otherwise very good.

Funnily enough, it's probably because I'm so adamant about getting you guys supported ASAP that you're lagging a bit behind. If I were able to split you up and pair you up with other people better suited to your current weaknesses, you'd both be leveling a lot better and generally more effective. Right now, the best thing about your pairing is that Keeper basically makes Celever invincible with his massive def/res pair-up boosts, which would actually be really useful if I were a defensive player, but I'm much more about rushing forward and killing things because I'm impatient.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 13 - Help pick our new teammate!

Chapter 17: I can't think up a witty title

<Drohn> Well, crap. This may be Valm's weakest point, but it's still a huge fortress with thousands of soldiers. How are we supposed to take this out?
<Porygon> Our best bet is a surgical strike, taking out their commander. A small group can infiltrate the compound while your other soldiers can take care of the remaining forces.
<Athena> Our other soldiers?
<Camo> Yeah, you know, the thousands of warriors we brought over from Ferox on the rest of those boats.
<CJ> The ones who have been apparently following us along this whole time even though they've never been mentioned.
<Athena> Oh, yeah, those guys, right. I guess they can provide a distraction while we sneak in.
<Porygon> Hopefully the Resistance forces will show up to help us out, too.
<Athena> Then we'll have even more faceless soldiers to forget about, yay!

Camo and CJ went off to get into position while I aligned our own forces. There were 3 entrances we planned on using, so I sent Keeper and Celever to take the right, Drohn and IE to hold the center, while Drac, PMJ, Cinesra, and I took the left. Light was to stay as close to the center of everyone as possible to keep up the heals, and TT and Palutena had a special mission to sneak around and loot the enemy chests.

Things went smoothly for a while. Keeper and Celever single-handedly took care of all of the right hand forces while the rest of us split up into different corridors to take out the remaining foes. Drac and PMJ on Minerva flew along with TT and Palutena to beat off the enemies while they looted the chests. Then the sound of footsteps on stairs reached our ears. The Resistance was here!

... but they were no longer on our side. Instantly, their outfits changed from green to red, signifying their solidarity with the enemy. We had been betrayed, and the turncoats were coming to reinforce the enemy. IE and Drohn rushed to take care of a large group that had come in towards the right while the rest of our group positioned near stairwells to take them out in surprise attacks as soon as they arrived. Cinesra and I rush to the General's quarters, hoping to flush out her remaining guards and end this quickly, though IE scored the final blow, taking out General Pheros with a jab from her new lance.

The battle was won, but we were losing the war.

<Porygon> Ohshi- we're surrounded. The entire Resistance is finally united, but they've all turned on us. I'd bet my bloomers DNA is threatening their families and they turned on out of fear.
<Cinesra> How can you be so sure?
<Porygon> I heard about it in an NPC conversation that Athena didn't write down.
<TT> Dude, why didn't you tell us?
<Athena> Sorry, we were in the middle of battle! I had a few other things to worry about than paraphrasing all the stupid text that appears in this game, especially when a bunch of guys with axes are running at my head. But, yeah, this sneaky Sage guy showed up and had a chat with Pheros about how he and DNA are extorting the Resistance members. He looked a lot like Haunted Water, now that I think about it...
<Porygon> Yes, it was Haunted Water. He is a strategist for DNA.
<CJ> Well, whoever it was doesn't exactly matter. Our forces have been slaughtered, the Resistance members are closing in around us, and I've received word that DNA's armies are coming down from the North and Kecleon's from the south to trap us. To make matters worse, a lot of the survivors from our side have also joined up with the enemy. We're boned.
<Athena> In that case, we need to get out of here now before we're really trapped.
<Drohn> We need a plan first, what should we do? Most of our hundreds of thousands of faceless soldiers are either dead or turncoats. This whole invasion has been a disaster.
<Athena> Don't worry, I have a plan.
<Everyone> Woohoo!
<Athena> We attack both DNA and Kecleon's Armies at the same time.
<Everyone> ... ... ...
<Athena> No, seriously, this is what we have to do in order to survive. One group needs to lead a small group into a feint against DNA to distract him and keep him in one place while the other, larger group goes after Kecleon where we have a chance of winning.
<CJ> So, it's a suicide mission against DNA to buy time, eh? Sure, I'll volunteer.
<IE> You can't do that! In the future, this is how you die! DNA himself kills you!
<CJ> Well, I guess I'll just have to void him then. But someone needs to lead this mission, and I've got the best chances of pulling it off.
<Camo> Don't worry, I'll go with him and keep him safe.
<IE> But... destiny! The future!
<CJ> Don't put any stock in this destiny hogwash. I told you that was my line, Athena.
<Athena> You're right; sorry.
<CJ> Also, your future can kiss my big brown Feroxi arse. I'm not going to die here; I promise you that.
<Drohn> Alright, good luck. The rest of us will start the march south.

And so we split up again, with Camo and CJ leading a small force of our remaining faceless soldiers, and the rest of them coming with mine and Drohn's group. We snuck out past the Resistance members (who didn't even put up a token resistance against our leaving now that DNA's baddies weren't breathing down their necks). Kecleon's army was still a decent ways away, so we were able to hide and set up camp for a night to rest and recover before another battle.

<Athena> Hey, Celever, I want to practice some strategies before we go against Kecleon's army. Would you mind playing some more strategy games with me to get me into the mood?
<Cinesra> Oh, trust me my dearest, I know all about getting ladies into the mood. *bows*
<Athena> ... ... ...
<Cinesra> Yes, of course, I'd be happy to play with you.
...
<Athena> Augh, you keep beating me! Maybe you should be the tactician of our army instead.
<Cinesra> Before you say that, take a look at the pieces. Even though I've won, my army is a tatters.
<Athena> Hey, you're right. A lot more of my soldiers are still alive, even though you won.
<Cinera> You see, my sweet, I am an expert at this game... but only when playing Casual mode. Since this game file is in Classic mode, if I were in charge, we'd have no one left to fight with. You, on the other hand, always make it a priority to keep all of us alive, for which I and many others are eternally grateful.
<Athena> Well, when you put it that way, thanks.
...
<Keeper> Oh, Celever!
<Celever> Hullo Keeper. ^_^
<Keeper> I finished the Dragon friend I made for you with magic, take a look!
<Celever> Hey, this is just an illusion! :<
<Keeper> Well, yeah, it was made with magic, so it's not actually real.
<Celever> That's no good! I can't talk to and tell jokes with an illusion. :\
<Keeper> I thought you just wanted to breathe fire at it. >_> Oh well, back to the drawing board. Don't worry, though, I'll come up with a great friend for you, you'll see!
<Celever> Thanks Keeper, you're the best! :D

Cinesra and Athena attained support level B! Keeper of Night and Celever attained support level A!

While we rested and recovered, CJ and Camo were already beginning their side of the mission...

<Camo> Man, your scouts weren't kidding about the size of this army. Phew. My arms are getting tired from killing things.
<CJ> At least we're still holding strong, but... ohshi- did you see that?
<Camo> A whole platoon of guys just died in a single round. Oh god, it's just one man.
<CJ> DNA, it's gotta be. Don't worry, I got this.
<Camo> Wait, CJ, no, don't go running towards him... *facepalm*
<DNA> Ahahahahahah! *smash* *strike*
<CJ> Ohshi- I'm down to 1 HP.
<DNA> Impressive. You're the first since Kecleon to survive beyond a single stroke.
<Camo> Yeah, and I'm not letting him die yet! *epic dual guard*
<CJ> Camo, get out of here, I'm done for. I don't even have an Elixir on me.
<DNA> He's right, you know, he is done for. *crits*
<CJ> Ack! Camo, here, take this gemstone.
<Camo> But this is.... Redy, one of the gemstones for the Fire Emblem! You had this the whole time and didn't say anything?
<CJ> Yeah, well, he seemed so excited about going on a fetch quest, and I didn't want to ruin it for him. But take it back to him for me, would ya?
<Camo> Take it back to himself yourself, I'm not letting you die!
<CJ> Too bad! *dies*
<Camo> CJaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy....!!!

Decisions, Decisions:

We have Boots! For those not in the know, Boots are an item that permanently increases a characters Movement stat, letting them move 2 additional squares each round. It's very powerful, and rare, since you can only get 2 of them in the game, and one is only available if you grind your Renown super high (requires 50k renown or something ridiculous like that; I just have 7k, even though I've played this game many times). So, feel free to nominate players to get the Boots. Apathy means I'll just give them to Athena because clearly I'm the best.

We've gotten 2 votes so far to do the Hot Spring DLC after Nah's recruitment. So I'll probably do that after the sidequests after we recruit Nah.

Player Notes:

Everyone gets some levels! This was a really nice chapter for leveling because all the enemies are promoted now.

I really wanted Keeper and Celever to get the bulk of the leveling, so I gave them the whole right wing to do on their own. Keeper burned through an entire Celica's Gale, but it was totes worth it. Also, I have another. PP and TT also started on that side, but I was afraid of them killing too many enemies, so instead of having them get the right side chests first, I sent them across to the left side. IE has a tough time taking out that Valkyrie right at the start of her section, so she and Drohn ended up being too slow and Drac, PMJ, Cinesra, and Athena got most of the exp from those early combats, though she made up for it by going over to the right n preparation for those reinforcements. I sent Athena and Cinesra up to draw out the enemies in the boss room, and then we all just tanked and waited for all of the reinforcements to show up for delicious exp while TT and PP ran around looting the chests. I also gave IE the boss kill to get her to to Lv. 5. Light got the Angelic Robe so that maybe she can survive 2 hits instead of just one; that 6 def, man. But it seems like Dragonshields are just as rare as Speedwings, so she'll just have to stay behind the lines as much as possible. Both Light and Athena are getting close to Lv. 10 for possible reclassing, so that's something to keep in mind.

I feel like it's taking forever to get Drac and PMJ and Celever and Keeper to S's, but that's probably just my impatience and the fact that I'm only doing a single chapter per day.

The whole Resistance subplot and Feroxi soldiers part of the Valm arc of this game is kind of ham-handed in how it's presented. I get that it's supposed to make the area feel more real, and also add a bit of realism to the fact that the Ylisse army of a whopping 20 people is supposed to be able to take down an Emperor with over a million soldiers under his command, but in practice it's just kind of like, "Oh, yeah, we keep getting told about this other people who are fighting but they're just redshirts so no one cares. My group is doing all the work anyway." Especially since they're all supposedly fighting right along with us and following us around. Maybe I'm overly critical of this game's plot, but I feel that this kind of thing was handled better in other games, with NPCs either fighting along side you in battle (this happened a lot in RD, IIRC), or doing entirely separate things far away from the PC's group, like how earlier Ferox sent a bunch of soldiers to retake Ylisstol while Drohn's group went to assassinate King Spoon. I dunno, it just always feels awkward to me.

That said, I did legitimately tear up at Basilio's/CJ's death when I played through this game the first time.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 17

With the boots, I say either give them to those who have a butts movement to help them move farther or one with a decent/high movement to make 'em more capable of moving around the map.

I'll also vote to do the Hot Spring DLC at whatever point because it sounds like a fun time uwu

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 17

We don't really have anyone super slow. No knights or generals. We also don't have that many cavalry units either, just Light, Cinesra, and Keeper. Gaius gets 7 move because lolthief. But for the most part we're all pretty good at staying together, which is why I didn't have an immediate idea for the Boots myself. I usually default to giving them to a Flyer for epic move, but we don't have any of those.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 17

I usually default to giving them to a Flyer for epic move, but we don't have any of those.
We will once people are leveled enough for Dark Flier.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 17

Both Light and Athena are very close to 10, though I'd miss Light's healing if you guys decide to reclass her.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 17

Since no one's movement seems to be one side or the other, I'd say Light with Athena as a secondary if you'd rather because healers getting around the field can be a good thing.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 17

I think I'll stay neutral about the Boots for now, especially since we are currently waiting to make multiple people Dark Fliers. Also, how about doing Lost Bloodlines 2 and getting the Dread Scroll at some point? It might be nice to have someone as a Dread Fighter, especially with those Resistance and Atk boosts.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 17

Well, Boots will get used before the next chapter no matter what, so it's kind of a "speak now or forever hold your piece" sort of deal. :p Thanks for the DLC suggestion, though! I'll add it to the list. Do you have a preference of when you'd like to see that done?

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 17

Ah, okay. In that case, I think I'll vote to give the Boots to IE. Also, I think it would be best to do the DLC after Chapter 20. It being the end of the Valm arc and all, everybody should be at a good level by then.

RE: Fire Emblem Awakening: PokéBeach Member Edition! Chapter 17

So, Boots votes so far are 1 for Light and 1 for IE. Anyone else care to weigh in? :p
