money for a kid

@Daelum

I smiled while reading your Celebi story. I usually try to buy singles before they are really played at my store. Last year, i got Emboar, RDL, Reshiram FA, Magnezone, Yanmega, all cards that topped the 50$, but unfortunately, i ragequited after rotation (i was playing SPs), and didnt sell those cards.

My friends are new at pokemon, and they have loads of money, so this is what I do.
I host a tournament for casual tcg playing and my friends want to join.
I charge them a little amount a money and then we have a lot of battles.
For getting a good record, the prize is usually some extra bulk that I get from packs that is worth like
$10 to them. So we are both happy and I've got enough for, like 2 packs.

Wow, that's a really good idea!
You should make custom badges to avoid losing cards xP

Last time I made $6 and gave out a stoutland, a venasaur, an unfezant, a stunfisk, a lucario, and a durant from a tin I bought recently.

You would think that if they had loads of money they would go blow it all on booster boxes/packs and tins! ;)

However, props to you for getting them to exchange money for your unwanted cards!

With the packs I get each week, I keep the good stuff and the rest goes into my tournament prizes. I'm going to a pre release soon, and that will leave me with enough money for at least 1 tin.

They do. But they never get luck.
All they get is tins, really, so they've got a lot of EP cards.

Is weighing packs illegal?

It isn't illegal but it's definitely against the spirit of it all.

As Daelum said, it's also wrong to go around selling weighed packs. :p

Thats stupid no wonder I never get good pulls out of packs. That kinda ruins the fun out of opening packs and it ruins it for people who dont have much money like me when people are weighing packs stealing all the good pulls.

As to how I afford the game... I'm kinda wondering that, myself, what with college and everything

Once in a blue moon, I buy singles to catch up on what I'm missing. More often than not, though, I buy sealed packs and trade to get what I need (more of the second due to its reliability). Honestly, it's more fun to open a pack of cards than to order singles--but singles is the best way to get what you need, I cannot deny that.

--- --- ---

(running into the spam for a moment) Huh, I haven't weighed any of my packs, and three of the last four individual Wal*Mart packs I got had Kyurem EX, Mewtwo EX and Darkrai EX. (not FA, but still)

Yeah its more fun and u never know what ur gonna get you could get trash or like a ex or shiny or something

Weighing pack discussion is not permitted. No warnings were issued this time, but that will not always be the case.

Since the original post was about how to get more money to buy more cards, might I suggest that you let your parents and grandparents know that you are interested in Pokemon cards? It would help to be specific with them ("please buy the Dragons Exalted booster cards, they look like this") and where to buy the items.

As a newcomer parent, I can say this would be very welcome info. My younger son got into Pokemon earlier this year, and I went and bought different tins and decks. Once he started playing in league, I found that many of those cards are too old and no longer legal. :( He still enjoys the cards, but I would have been happier if I knew more, and bought the more updated cards.

Hope this helps!

That is a great idea! I also made the same mistake (although I was purchasing for myself; I don't have any children :p). I wish I had known which cards were legal and which cards weren't. I guess it was my own fault for not doing much research before jumping into the TCG.

As other posters have mentioned, buying singles is a lot cheaper than buying booster packs, booster boxes, tins, etc. I think I mentioned this in another thread but you could just buy playsets of cards that you know are staples in the current format and then buy the cards that you would like to have in your deck. If you ever want to make a totally new deck, trade away the non-staple cards that were in your previous deck for cards to put into your new deck! You can make proxy cards to play with for a little while before you make such a trade in order to be sure that the deck is a good idea!

I've been down that road, too. (SO much money wasted there.)
Again, buying singles will help very much for deck building/collection last touches.
Save some money, buy some every now and then.
I buy packs when I have multiple things I want, and or when hoping to get something trade-worthy.

Hand weighing is the way to go.

You occasionally start to detect minor differences when hand weighing.
That is how I pulled MY mewtwo EX

You know, I pulled MY Mewtwo-EX{C}{C}X-Ball 20x by getting the zekrom pack when I tried to find a Mewtwo pack. Yep, the Zekrom pack

Art doesn't affect whether there is an Ex in it.

I by singles now because of an experience long ago.
I bought 8 packs hoping for a darkrai EX.
All I got is SR gardevoir.
Buy singles. They save money.
