Media My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

I mean, all that hype and buildup for what? Ponyville winning silver?

They won silver in the aerial relay. Ponyville won the Games overall, beating out Cloudsdale by one medal.

Well, Discord did say that Fluttershy "meant more than anything in the world" to him, also, he hints towards having affection towards her (and her towards him), and the connection him and flutter have are heavily implied that it's not in the 'friend' level anymore.

No he didn't, no he doesn't, no she doesn't, and no it isn't.

I don't think it's that big of a stretch to see that Fluttershy is genuinely devastated when Discord betrays her. During his reformation, she stood up to her friends and put her faith in someone who has done nothing but screw her and her friends over, calling him a friend when no one else would.

When he betrays her in the finale, he's undoing all the work she put into being his friend; like she spent all of season four thinking how wonderful it is to have a great friend, how awesome of a feeling it was to believe there was good in someone and have them prove to you that you mean something to them...only for him to crush her at the worst possible moment.

Could romance come from their relationship? Not canonically, no, but... I don't know. Discord's betrayal cut Fluttershy really deep, but by the end of the episode she seemed friendly towards him, like she'd already forgiven him. I feel like this is the kind of thing that they'd argue about when they have really heated fights.

SO ANYWAY HOW BOUT THAT FINALE

I was hoping Discord would actually fight against Tirek. I think it would be interesting to see him actually fight; he's supposedly one of the most powerful beings in Equestria, but he never actually does any fighting.

Good finale, thought the fight scene was dope, hating how the obvious twilight-ex card is gonna come out

I've skipped most of S4 but tuned in for the finale. Loved it man. Fight scene was so badass. Can't believe I'm saying MLP is badass.

Remember back in season 3 where Discord was befriended and we were all WTF right? Maybe that's because Celestia knew Tirek would eventually return.

Could be. As soon as tirek came back, Celestia went straight for discord as her number one choice.

So I'm working on a Cheese Sandwich card and it got me thinking about cutie marks and destinies and pony naming conventions.

How much influence do parents have over a child's cutie mark? You would think that ponies would be named after their cutie marks, not the other way around, but ponies spend the first few years of their life without them. Was it just luck that Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon have cutie marks that are the same as their names? Diamond Tiara's family name is Rich, so why didn't Filthy Rich just keep up the theme? Maybe he got tired of being called Filthy and decided his kid's name wouldn't be an adverb.

Then there's the entire Apple family, who are pretty much all named after apples and apple accessories, and all of their cutie marks are apple-things. How did they know their destiny would involve apples?

Maybe it's the other way around, and a pony's cutie mark takes the pony's name into account when determining its design. This is why Cheese Sandwich got me thinking. His cutie mark is a cheese sandwich... what the hell kind of talent is that? "Oh boy I got my cutie mark! It's a... cheese sandwich. Boy, that's obvious, innit?

Now that I think about it, that probably makes a lot of sense. Apple Bloom's name is apple related, but she has no desire to work the farm forever. That said, neither did Applejack, and all it took was some homesickness and being in the right place at the right time for her to realize that she truly missed farm life. I'm kinda hoping that when Apple Bloom gets her cutie mark, it won't be apples. That would be pretty awesome. It would make a nice episode, too.

I think your question can answer itself; it's not a question of what's first, the name or the talent, but of what comes before them both. There is a loong, very technical essay I thought during a sleepy bus ride tonight, but I forgot it, so I'll give you the abridged version.

If we ignore the obvious answer of "it's like that because the writers want it to be like that" and consider it as a plausible system, the MLP universe is deterministic; with this I mean that there is a set of invariable outcomes that seem to respond to a kind of "intelligence", or rather "make sense"... a destiny, that's where I'm getting at.
Of all the multiple possible names a pony could have, of all the multiple talents a pony could have, more often than not both match enough as to have a sort-of visible link to them. so it's not that the parents thought a name that happens to fit that pony's talents, or that said name directly affected their talents, but that from the beginning of that universe, it was already set in stone that that particular pony would have that particular name and that particular talent, the rest just... clicks.

Sure, we can probably point out too many ponies whose names don't match their talents, but that would seem to imply that that universe is simultaneously heavily deterministic, and also somewhat flexible in its internal logic, rather than invalidate the theory.

Again, that is merely an interpretation; the obvious answer is the correct, practical one: "because the writers want it like that".

And of course, another interpretation is that from the beginning of our universe it was set in stone that the writers would want to set in stone in the MLP universe a particular pony's particular name and particular talent.

Excuse me for being a bit of a Slowpoke here, but I'm here to say that I liked both the finale and the overall Fourth Season, despite some duds on the way.

This season is proof that the show is always getting stronger inside and out.

Good idea. Have another Ponified ID card to burn time until season 5:

Template here (editable files available in both Gimp and Photoshop formats), in case you feel like using it to keep you entertained for a bit. Also, this OC ID (and corresponding template) was actually inspired by that one Kaiser posted (the template by LDinos) :p

It will start airing early 2015.

I am not a fan of this show, but I keep up with it for some reason.

Ugh. Why are they airing it so late? It's supposed to air late 2014! Or is it another short season?

I was taken back by that. I guess it is popular enough were they don't have to worry about keeping it fresh in the mind of the young viewers.
