RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Thanks for your view! I'll be doing the next chapter tomorrow probably, or maybe later today. Have to see what I feel like!

And woo, 2nd page! Well, third for most maybe, but I put 20 posts per page, so... it's 2nd page for me now! :p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

OK... Chapter 9 is done! However... this one is far darker than before. I won't say exactly how, but if you don't like things that are a little more mature in nature, this is where you need to stop reading. Although not EVERYTHING will be of this nature, there'll be more like this as I go. After all, if you've read carefully so far, you'd know that the pendant has a dark side... watch as it unfolds now!

Chapter 9 – An Ever-Evolving Tragedy…

Isn’t the process of evolution fascinating? The thought that a species will adapt to new environments, to allow them to survive in places that they never thought to be possible… for a species to spread, this adaptation is vital. This changeability is sometimes negative though. One can often forget who they WERE before they were forced to adapt… forgetting ones roots leads to corruption; this is bad for those around the changed species. Man’s technological advancements have now been so great, could we have lost our roots? If so, the world could be in grave danger…

“Come on Trapinch, hurry up! Show them your Crunch attack!”

Trapinch finally emerged from underneath the ground. It shot up where Staravia was resting after using Whirlwind! Clamping the bird with its powerful jaws, it savagely crunched Staravia’s torso, causing him to cry in agony as it was swiftly knocked out. All Ryan and Eevee could do was stare, wide-eyed and fearful, at the horrific event that took place.

“Staravia… I’m sorry,” Ryan whispered as he called his pokemon back, with tears in his eyes at the condition of his pokemon as he did so. This quickly turned to rage as he looked at Calum, then at Eevee. “Eevee, you’ve got to avenge Staravia! DESTROY that evil hole-digger!”

Eevee looked nervously at Ryan, as afraid of his anger as he was of the opposition. Looking for support, he turned to Calum, who smiled mischievously and winked at him. He clearly had an idea. Eevee, pleased to have the support of his trainer, turned his attention back to the battle.

Lewis laughed at Ryan. “Like that pathetic puppy can take on MY Trapinch! Trapinch, start digging again!”

Trapinch literally flew underground; the pace at which it dug down was phenomenal. Not wanting to end up like Staravia, Eevee once again turned to Calum, who calmly issued his commands.

“Eevee, don’t get too worried yet! Dig underground yourself and try to disrupt it whilst it digs!”

Raising an eyebrow at the command, but trusting in his trainer, Eevee started to make its way underground, albeit at a much slower pace than the little ant lion. What he found under the ground was a major surprise; it appeared that Trapinch had dug several separate tunnels as it waited for commands from Lewis! These were all linked in some way, but the links were usually pretty far apart. Seeing the chance to cause some confusion, Eevee dug new links between the tunnels. As it was finishing, Trapinch burst its way through the dirt and found the dog staring it in the face! Seeing what had become of its tunnels, it grew angry. It started chasing Eevee, crying loudly as it did so. Lewis chuckled once again.

“Ha, it sounds like your Eevee has been spotted making a mess of Trapinch’s underground complex, and he sure is mad. Trapinch, use Faint Attack and wrap this up!”

Trapinch was finding it hard to catch the faster Eevee in a direct chase. However, the fact that the underground had turned into a large maze came to its rescue. Cloaking itself in a strange black aura, it waited in a darkened corner for the prey to draw near. Confused as to why Trapinch wasn’t still chasing it, Eevee looked around, uncertainty showing on its face (not that the trainers could see this). Unknowingly passing the silent Trapinch, it made its way back towards the surface to get another command from Calum. Seizing the moment to attack, Trapinch lunged at Eevee!

The collision sent both back up to the surface at high speed, with Eevee clearly worse off. He landed heavily on the floor, the black aura that surrounded Trapinch before the attack now encircling him instead. Trapinch landed on its head on the floor. It had managed to get its teeth stuck in the ground, and was unable to chomp through the soil to break free! Its legs flailed helplessly as it struggled to break free from its predicament. Calum ran up to Eevee, heart in his mouth. Eevee looked really hurt… what had he done by letting it go underground like that?

“Eevee…” he whispered. “Are you alright? Say something…”

As he said this, the black aura around Eevee intensified. It then focused itself in front of the Void Pendant, causing Eevee to get up on its feet. It was almost as if it was lead by the darkness… when he opened his eyes, they were jet black! Something had caused Eevee to become possessed by the Void Pendant, and it had a look that struck fear into all around it.

The focused aura in front of the pendant manifested itself into a sphere of pure blackness. A lunging paw of Eevee’s then stuck this shadowy sphere, causing it to career towards the hapless Trapinch. The impact was so great that it appeared to cut the very soul of the pokemon, leaving it lifeless in the ground. Lewis raced over to it to see if it was ok… Eevee, coming out of its trance, collapsed to the ground as well. Calum called it back immediately, not wanting to risk anything else happening to him. Lewis looked up at Calum, with tears running down his face.

“You… what have you done!? My Trapinch is… is…” The pain was too much for him to finish his sentence. Calum knew exactly what he meant, however. He looked at Lewis, stunned by the information.

“No! It can’t be! My Eevee doesn’t have the power to… how is this possible!?”

“It looks like the power of The Void is coming out sooner than we had anticipated…”

An old woman was standing on the bride that Paul and Lewis had been guarding. She looked exactly the same as Azalea, but unlike her, she had short pink hair. Azalea had blue hair… not something that caught Calum and Ryan’s attention much before, but compared to the brightness of this woman’s hair, it was clearly noticeable.
“Power of The Void…” Calum whispered. “Could it be? Eevee was hit by a dark aura… could that have triggered something?”

Tears still stinging his face, Lewis screamed at Calum. “Hey, I don’t know what your pokemon just did, but you… you… YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR WHAT IT DID! You took out my pokemon… my PARTNER… now I take YOU out!” He made a run towards Calum with outstretched arms, with a look that could kill even the toughest of men. An invisible field of energy stopped him, however. Spinning round to see what caused the field, he saw the old woman, with an Alakazam quietly focused in front of her.

“Don’t even think about it… don’t you see? You’ve lost your pokemon due to your dark intentions! You aimed to steal an unstoppable power, whether you meant to or not. As a result, it’s cost you… now leave! Before you lose any more!”

Hearing this, Lewis grabbed Paul and took off into the forest, howling in anguish at the events that had taken place. With the thugs out of the way, the woman returned her pokemon and approached Calum and Ryan.

“You’re Calum and Ryan, aren’t you? I’m Melissa, one of the three guardians that protect the legend of the Void Pendant. Sister Azalea told me you were coming. But I never thought I’d have to witness an event like THAT… it appears that your Eevee is losing its grip as the protector of the pendant. When it was hit by the darkness of Faint Attack, it lost it for a moment. You need to know more of the legend, and fast. Come with me.”

The pair followed Melissa into Evergreen City, cautiously looking at one another as they travelled. The trip was made in silence; the mood was still sombre after the fateful battle on the bridge. Evergreen City itself was very beautiful, however – conifer trees intertwined with the buildings and streets to create a wonderful mix of urban and natural scenery. In the background, two tall buildings stood. One looked like a gigantic department store, and the other looked like a haunted house of sorts. The house seemed out of place when compared to the rest of the town… perhaps that was its intention.

Melissa led the pair to her house, which was on the edge of the city. The house itself was in a state of disrepair, with tiles missing from the roof and several cracked windows. However, this gave it the impression of a mysterious place where legends were kept. Once inside, Melissa sent out her Lopunny, who used Healing Wish to fully restore the status of Ryan and Calum’s pokemon. This triggered a reaction from Eevee’s poke ball – the brown dog burst out without provocation!

“Sorry about that, I guess it senses that something important is about to be told,” said Calum sheepishly, slightly embarrassed that Eevee had let itself out like that. “There’s one question that’s burning away in my mind right now, and I’m sure you know what it is. Just WHAT happened in that battle? Eevee looked like it was consumed by evil… and it actually caused a death! How could that happen!?”

“That was just a glimpse into the power of the Void, young trainer,” spoke Melissa, in a soft and apprehensive tone. “Your Eevee has protected that pendant, and the power it keeps, since it was very young. It is beginning to lose its grip on the power it keeps… and when it was hit by the shadowy aura of that Trapinch’s attack, it temporarily lost control altogether. The corruptive nature of the pendant is causing that Eevee to become more irregular than normal… and as a result, the events of today happened. Magnified by the power of the Void Pendant, the Shadow Ball that was launched today had the power to drain life from its target… and that’s exactly what it did.”

Calum merely looked on, the shock of it all proving too much for him. Seeing him speechless, Ryan decided to speak.

“But that won’t happen every time Eevee uses that move, will it? I’m sure Eevee will be able to use a Shadow Ball attack after learning it there… will it always drain the life of its target?”

“Thankfully, it won’t,” Melissa said reassuringly, “but it will possibly remove the target’s life if Eevee becomes corrupted by the darkness once again. Be VERY careful of dark attacks like Faint Attack and Dark Pulse,” she warned. “They may trigger the negative side of the pendant, causing more tragedies like we saw today.”

Calum slowly looked up towards Melissa, who merely stared back. The fear in both their eyes was evident, but Calum’s was stronger. He still didn’t know much about the pendant, or how to stop it. Today merely highlighted the seriousness of his situation – he HAD to find some way of getting the pendant from Eevee!

Speaking for the first time in ages, he asked Melissa that question. “Please… tell me you know how to remove this thing… or at least where we should be going. This thing has to be stopped!”

Melissa looked at the ground with pain in her eyes. “I’m sorry… I don’t know how to remove the pendant, but I can tell you where to go to perform the task. To the west of Foretta lies an island where only pokemon live. This island is home to the legendary power of the Void Pendant, as I’m sure you are already aware. The legendary pokemon created a barrier long ago to prevent anything, be it pokemon or human, from getting onto the island. When the Void Pendant was on the island, all was well. But some of the pokemon on the island grew restless. Tired of their appointed roles as guardians, the Dark-Type pokemon of the island sought to use the power of the pendant to take over the universe. Fearing that everything could soon be destroyed, one family of pokemon took up the role of protecting the pendant. Unfortunately for this little Eevee, it was the one who had to carry the pendant off of the island As a result; well… the balance of power has shifted somewhat. You need to get to Pokemon Island in order to remove the pendant from Eevee. But… someone else is going to have to wear it, or else something terrible will happen with it!”

“The final sister, Ulea, lives in the next town from here. The town of Rowan is north of here; you can’t miss it. The northwest corner of the island is a dangerous place, however… supposedly Team Leafre has a base up there.” Calum looked at Eevee, anger in his eyes. Not for the brown dog, but for Team Leafre, who threatened time and time again to steal him. “I can see the rage in your eyes… Team Leafre is after the Void Pendant as well; you MUST be careful up there. Ulea will be able to tell you exactly what to do with the pendant when you get to the island.”

“Man… this pendant is REALLY dangerous, don’t you think?”

Calum and Ryan were walking towards the department store after getting more information about the Void Pendant, and how Eevee managed to take the life of a pokemon with it. Calum was still a little depressed at the whole ordeal, and Ryan’s stupidly obvious comment sent him over the edge.

“No duh! That thing KILLED a pokemon! And it threatens to destroy the whole world! And YOU think it’s dangerous… whatever gave you that idea then?!”

Ryan was stunned into silence. Recovering his senses, Calum was quick to apologize.

“Look, I’m sorry. I never meant to fly off the handle like that… but I’m really worried now. I thought it might have been a joke at first, when Azalea told us that the world was in danger. But… seeing the pure evil in Eevee’s eyes… this thing is a real danger. The seriousness has just caught up to me, and your comment just sent me into a rage. Can you forgive me?”

A small smile appeared on Ryan’s face. Facing Calum again, he spoke in his usual joyous tone. “Of COURSE I can mate! I understand completely; it was stupid of me to say that. I guess the world really is in our hands though… but let’s get some light relief yeah? We can see what the department store has to offer now, so let’s go!”

Racing into the automatic entrance to the huge building, Ryan was quick to see what was on offer in the place. This store had something for everyone; from general adventuring equipment to high-tech poke balls, from ability-increasing drugs for pokemon to TM’s to teach them new moves. There were also decorations for around the house, as well as the counter Ryan was TRULY interested in – the evolutionary stone counter. Being unable to find his friend (and sighing again because of it), Calum decided he would get a few new moves for his pokemon. His Growlithe learned Overheat and Endure, his Kirlia gained Safeguard and Thunder Wave. His Eevee was taught to use Iron Tail, and his Feebas acquired Water Pulse and Rain Dance.

When Calum finally caught up with Ryan, he was looking jubilant. In his hands were two Fire Stones and two Thunder Stones. Looking excited he brought out Pikachu, who looked at the stones in his hand with a curious look in her eyes. Eevee was also let out, on Ryan’s request.

“Calum… I got thinking just now. Perhaps Eevee could control the power of the Void Pendant more easily if he evolved? I have a Thunder Stone here for you, so let’s get Eevee into Jolteon and allow it to keep the pendant under check more easily!”

Ryan seemed pretty adamant that the evolution would solve the problem of power control. It made sense to Calum too, somehow. Calum got thinking, and decided that the power gain upon evolution would help prevent another tragic occurrence like before.

“OK, give Eevee the stone Ryan.”

Ryan placed the stone in Eevee’s paw. For around ten seconds, nothing happened. Then, Eevee began to glow, but not the usual white colour. Everyone gasped in awe as the little dog glowed a dark yellow, before the Void Pendant pierced this glow with a brilliant flash of light! The Thunder Stone was sent flying out of Eevee’s paws, causing it to stop glowing. Nobody quite knew where the stone had landed however. Nobody except Pikachu that is… swallowing painfully a couple of seconds later, everyone turned round to face it in shock. Pikachu had swallowed the rebounded Thunder Stone! Clutching its stomach in discomfort, it glanced up at Ryan and Calum, and then glowed the bright white that Eevee was supposed to glow! Before anyone could react, Pikachu had evolved.

The resulting pokemon was a slightly larger, bright orange mouse. Her ears were brown on the outside and yellow on the inside, and her cheeks had turned bright yellow. Her tail had massively grown in size, becoming a large black coil with a lightning bolt at the tip. The tail was missing the very end of the bolt, looking as if it had been shorted out. She let out a small cry of embarrassment at the way in which the evolution was carried out.

Ryan looked in surprise as well. “No way… how did THAT happen? And Pikachu… you’ve evolved before I was going to get you to… well, I guess I have a Raichu now after all! How do you feel buddy?”

Raichu looked sheepish for a brief moment, then nodded towards Ryan. It was in good health, but it was a little embarrassed at the manner of the evolution. It then turned its attention towards Eevee, looking concerned for his well-being.

Eevee looked around the room in astonishment. Tears welled up in his eyes… not being able to understand what was happening to him and why he couldn’t evolve, he ran up to Calum and started crying. All Calum could do to comfort him was to hold him. Ryan, trying to stay cheerful himself, went over to Eevee to try and calm him down.

“Please Eevee, cheer up! We’re finding out more about this stupid pendant as we go along… we’re doing our best to help you! You’ll be ok, I promise. Now… how about we head over to the gym? I’m sure you can help Calum get his third badge and feel better because of it!”

Looking up at Ryan, Eevee nodded briefly, before burying itself in Calum’s jacket once again. Calum sighed. “Come on, let’s go get that badge. I wonder who the leader is here…”

Well... there you have it. The dark side is revealed... what do you think?

I have an important question with regards to my last couple of chapters. What did you think of the maze idea in the gym? The first gym was basic, but of course the gyms in the game are anything but. I decided I wanted to try and make puzzles and things for at least most of the gyms to come. But my question is, was my first attempt at such a puzzle good for you guys to read, or did it come across as simple filler that shouldn't be bothered with?

Also, anything so far that you've particularly like? I'd like to know any favourite quotes etc that you, the readers, have. I'm quite partial to a few, but I'm not the best judge of my own story :p. So I want your favourite bits if you don't mind :D

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

OOOOO RAICHU!! I like how Ryan didnt force it to evolve, fate just took its course! Wow that was a dark side! It certainly broke reality which is what it seemed you intended to do! I do like the maze idea. It breaks the routine and becomes suprise of what the gym will be like. Favorite part in the chapter huh. Well i like funny so i have to say

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

I'm glad you liked the idea :). I remember you saying that you accidentally evolved your pika, so I thought I'd get it to go in a similar way here. Of course, our old friend the pendant had a lot to say about it, but... that's the way it goes.

I'm also pleased that the darker side of things wasn't too heavy though. You're right in the sense that reality is there to be broken - this IS a story after all, and things like that just bring that fact back home for me.

I'll need to see what I can do about restarting my writing on this soon - must.. stop.. overplaying.. wii... :p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

I did evolve pika accidently! With a story when you get dramatic like that it lessnes the mood and the way you dealt with it in the story worked really well!

Lol i just opened Mario galaxy and started playing it and its ADDICTING:p!!!

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

I just finished it in its entirety :p. Well, Super MARIO Galaxy at least. The game for me is now called Super Luigi Galaxy :D

Hmm... perhaps this story shows I haven't forgotten EVERYTHING I did in english classes a few years back after all :p. Half the reason I'm doing this story is because I felt like testing that... I did English to quite a high standard and I wanted to see if I was still capable of producing anything like what I could do then. By the looks of it I still can... and maybe more o_O

Oh, and for the record... by favourite part, I meant in the story as a whole, not necessarily the lastest chapter. If you prefer a bit that was done before, then by all means say that instead :)

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Ok, ok, I have a confession to make. I... kinda got addicted to the Wii and almost didn't write this chapter at all :(. But I know I have a LONG way to go with this story, and I want to do all I can to finish this "epic" story in the making! I have the next chapter done, although I'm not necessarily the most pleased person in the world with this one. However, it isn't me that's the judge of that in the long run, it's you! Let's see how the next gym welcomes our heros hm?

Chapter 10 - A Shadow Game?

The gym building in Evergreen was surprisingly different from the rest of the city. Unlike the main city, which was very well kept, the gym building looked completely dilapidated. It would have been easy to call it a danger to the public… looking nervously at each other, Ryan and Calum headed inside.

The building was lit with strange overhead lights that shone in a darkened shade… almost as if it was black light. If this wasn’t perplexing enough, the walls were painted in such a way as to glow dimly every few seconds. Simply put, this place was eerie to the max. A young man with a jet-black casual attire stood on the other side of the entrance hall. Upon seeing new challengers, he stepped forward to greet them.

“Salutations,” he said, before noticing who was at the door. “Ah, Calum! How have you been! I’ve been waiting for you to come here… it’s been a while since any worthwhile challenger had come along… but I’m sure you’ll entertain me!”

Calum looked confident. Being recognized as soon as he came in only served to strengthen his mood, as well as confirm his suspicions. He was now certain that the others who came into Foretta with him in the tournament. However, there’s only eight gym leaders… where was the last person, and who was it?

“John, how are you?” Calum addressed the leader in a buoyant tone. “I’m assuming you lead this place then? I wonder how our match is going to go…”

John smiled. “I am the leader here, but I won’t be facing you alone. You have a young trainer there with you – I’ll take you both on in a doubles game! We’ll talk more about details when you clear my… challenge.”

Calum raised an eyebrow. “Challenge? I wonder what your gym’s puzzle is…”

“Well, why don’t you come in and see? Although do be careful… this gym can be a nightmare to those who can’t stand the dark.” He walked into the room behind him, quickly disappearing into the shadowy light. Briefly looking at each other for support, Calum and Ryan followed him into the room.

What they found appeared to be some form of maze. Unlike Lisa’s gym, the maze wasn’t in the shape of a pokemon. It also didn’t appear to be too taxing… until you looked a little harder. The “black light” was even more prominent in this room. This was because the walls of the maze were lined with mirrors! Just looking into this surreal set-up chilled Calum and Ryan to the bone. This gym definitely wasn’t for the faint-hearted.

Calum looked at Ryan, hesitating before speaking. “Well… shall we?”

Ryan’s expression showed real fear at the prospect of going into the darkness, but he eventually plucked up the courage to answer. “Ok… but Raichu is coming out with me. I won’t get through otherwise!” Upon saying this, his most trustworthy pokemon burst out of her poke ball to come to Ryan’s aid. He spoke softly to her, “Raichu, let’s light this place up a little… use Charge!”

Raichu began to build electricity up in her body, glowing a bright whitish yellow as she did so. She then concentrated this charge into her lightning bolt-shaped tail, creating a powerful spot of white light. Piercing through the black light of the gym, this spot was able to dimly light the way forward.

Calum was intrigued. “Nice work Ryan! Now, let’s get going and find John…”

Even with the small increase in visibility, the mirrors in the room were causing Calum some real problems. Since the mirrors reached up to the roof, it was impossible for the light to penetrate above them, so there was no way of knowing which direction was the right one. As if this wasn’t enough, the fact that the walls WERE mirrors meant that the light of Raichu’s tail was reflected in every direction possible, causing some rather odd and perplexing effects. Some areas were intensely lit, whereas others weren’t lit at all. It definitely made finding your way all the more difficult.

Calum and Ryan were stuck. Left, right, right, left… straight on… it was all too confusing, and there were no clues around to help. Starting to get desperate, Calum was almost ready to give in. When suddenly, an idea came to him. He brought out Kirlia, who looked at her surroundings in confusion. Looking blankly at Calum, she awaited some form of command… or perhaps an explanation. “Kirlia, we’re in a weird maze for the third gym, and we have NO idea where to go… think you can sense where someone is standing in this place?”

Kirlia nodded, and then closed her eyes in concentration. Focusing her mind, she searched her surroundings for the emotions of people. Turning her attention away from the familiar feelings of Calum and Ryan, she detected a feeling of complacency to the left of where she was standing. Opening her eyes again, she looked up at Calum, pointing in the direction of the emotion.

Calum looked in that direction, and then back at Kirlia. “Kirlia, fire a Shock Wave in that direction... let’s see if it’s a clear path!” Complying, the dancer briefly gathered ambient energy together before launching a yellow pulse in the direction of the emotion. The blast went straight through, and was blocked by a strange blue light in the distance. Seeing the attack go through so easily, Calum called Kirlia back and ran straight onwards, with Ryan and Raichu in rapid pursuit. They stopped at the exit of the maze, where John greeted them with a laugh.

“Still sharp as always then?” he asked jokingly. “It’s a good job I had my pokemon use Protect there you know… or I could have been hurt! But then again, I expected you to use an attack to get through. After all, you were there for a long time…” his voice trailed slightly, clearly a little disappointed that the maze slowed Calum down so much. “Still, you’re here now! Time for your challenge… and it will involve the pair of you!”

Calum and Ryan looked at each other in confusion. Seeing this, John laughed. “Oh, don’t worry, it won’t be too hard to understand. You two are going to face me at once, as partners for a double battle. You can each use two pokemon, and I will use four of my own. If both of one person’s pokemon are knocked out before the other person’s, and the other person still has their reserve monster, they can send it out instead. Basically, until three pokemon are beaten there will always be two in battle. Understand?” Calum and Ryan nodded in unison. “Good! If you win, both of you will get the badge at once. Now… let’s get started already! Rotom, Drifblim, let’s go!”

Upon finishing his explanation of the battle rules, John flung two dark green poke balls into the middle of the field. The pokemon that came out were rather strange looking creatures. One looked like a large, circular blimp, with four propeller blades at its base. An odd brown plaster in the shape of a cross covered its mouth, as if to keep the pokemon inflated. The other was even stranger – a tiny orange body, with deep blue eyes and bolts of pale blue plasma protruding from either side of its tiny frame. Its whole body was covered in the same pale blue glow, as if it was made up entirely of plasma. Calum looked in astonishment.

“Wow, you’re a ghost user then?” he asked. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised with the gym as it is. It’s like a ghost house in here!”

“That’s the idea my friend!” John shouted gleefully. “I always liked the ghost type when I battled in our world… and so I had to dedicate myself to them here too! Now, let’s see what you’ve managed to find so far!”

Ryan was the first to respond by calling Raichu up to the stage. Her tail had stopped glowing a while back, but her cheeks still crackled with electricity. Calum sent out his Eevee, who looked at his opponents in astonishment. He obviously hadn’t seen ghosts all too often…

John looked in interest at the pokemon chosen. “Hmm… that Raichu is clearly well trained, and your Eevee is a good tactical choice for this match… this should be interesting! Drifblim, let’s begin the match. Use Stockpile!”

Drifblim began pumping itself up, becoming sturdier as it did so. It appeared to be storing energy, ready to unleash it for some for of attack… or maybe something else. Knowing of Drifblim’s high vitality, Calum wasn’t about to let it build itself up too much. He called over to Ryan to launch an attack at the blimp, since it feared electricity.

“OK Raichu, the blimp is highly shock-able! Strike it down with Thunderbolt!”

Upon receiving the command, the electric mouse unleashed a wicked jolt of electricity from her charged cheeks, aiming it straight at the heavy opponent. However, the blast was abruptly intercepted by a racing burst of plasma! It appeared that Rotom had gotten I the way of the charge in order to protect its friend whilst it was building up its defenses. It cringed slightly at the strength of the attack though; even though it resisted electric moves it was still hurt by the sheer force that the shock possessed. Raichu could only watch in shock as her attack failed to make contact with the correct target.

John laughed again at the reaction. “Don’t worry Raichu, there’ll be plenty for you to be shocked at as my plasma pokemon unleashes its own moves! Rotom, use Charge and build up your power!”

As Rotom began to glow with its building energy, Calum mounted his own attack. He couldn’t let both the opposition get out of reach so quickly…

“Eevee, use Quick Attack to reach Rotom, then Bite it in full flight!”

The combination of moves came as a total surprise to the opponent. Eevee charged headlong towards Rotom. Thinking that it wouldn’t be hurt by the normal attack, Rotom hovered on the spot, continuing the order to store power. However, at the last moment Eevee changed his attack, biting the plasma ghost with all the power he could muster! The effectiveness of this attack was clear – Rotom simply sunk to the ground, defeated before it even had a chance to begin.

John frowned. “Didn’t see THAT coming… how disappointing.” Calling his pokemon back, he sighed. “I guess I need to use this one quicker than expected… Haunter, go!”

John threw another dark green poke ball into the mix, unleashing his next ghost pokemon. A vividly purple gas appeared, forming the shape of a large head, with two disembodied hands floating at either side. The apparition sneered at Eevee, knowing that he was the reason it had been sent out so early.

Whilst all this had been happening, Drifblim had become so large that it had almost sunk to the ground. It was readying an attack using the energy it had stored… Ryan glanced over to it and spotted this. Before he could even think, he blurted a command out.

“Raichu, use Charge and Quick Attack! Race through Drifblim with electricity around you!”

Raichu began a rapid charge at Drifblim, much like Eevee had done not so long ago. As she did so, her body crackled loudly with static electricity. The combination of speed and electrical power crashed headlong into Drifblim! Raichu passed right through Drifblim since Quick Attack had no effect, but the electricity it had built up had caused the blimp pokemon some serious pain on the inside… there was no way that it could have bolstered the internal defenses against an attack like that!

Unfortunately for Raichu, running right through a ghost had left her unable to move. She was paralysed by fear… the fear of one day becoming a ghost like that. Meanwhile, the pain of the highly effective electric attack that Drifblim had suffered had become unbearable. The brown patch on its mouth shot off as it cried in pain. Then, to the shock of all in the stadium, it exploded without provocation! Raichu, still incapable of movement, was much too close to the blast, and was instantly knocked out by the intense blow. Drifblim merely crashed to the floor in a heap. Stunned into silence by the extraordinary sequence of events, John and Ryan merely called their pokemon back. It was Ryan who spoke first, with small tears welling up in his eyes.

“I’m sorry Raichu… I didn’t think for a second that something like THAT would happen… I knew that move was risky, but…” He was cut off by John, who offered his condolences.

“Hey, don’t worry about it! I know your Raichu will be fine Ryan; she’s a tough fighter. But seriously, you two are doing REALLY well… I never expected to have to use my best pokemon against ANY challenger here. I guess I shouldn’t be so shocked though, seeing that you’re training with an expert like Calum and all. Time to bring the REAL offence to the table! Mismagius, show them why you’re my best!”

From John’s last dark green poke ball came his strongest and most impressive Ghost pokemon. When the light faded, a small, dark purple spirit appeared. She wore a large hat that almost covered her deep red eyes. Around her neck were three pretty red jewels glinting in the shadowy light that surrounded the battlefield. She cackled in a horrifyingly shrill voice as she floated onto the battlefield. Ryan sent out Vulpix, who was in need of some battle experience. Sending her out against such a powerful pokemon though… Calum questioned this move in his head.

However, he hardly had the time to do so; John was straight in to give commands to his new pokemon. “Mismagius, use Protect! Haunter, hit the whole battlefield with Dark Pulse!”

Mismagius covered itself in the pale blue light that Calum and Ryan saw earlier on in the maze. As she did so, Haunter gathered up all of the dark light in the stadium and expelled it with amazing force in all directions! The move was so fast that Calum and Ryan had no time to react whatsoever. Vulpix was wiped out before it could make a move… and Eevee was knocked flat as well. It appeared that Haunter had delivered an extremely surprising attack to both opponents, dealing massive damage. The wave of darkness simply passed over Mismagius without leaving a scratch on her; Protect had clearly done its job. Ryan bitterly called Vulpix back, apologizing to Calum as he did so. Calum sent out Kirlia, and then rushed over to Eevee to check if it was ok. Before he got there though, the Void Pendant began to glow.

“Oh no…” Calum said. “Not again! Eevee, snap out of it!”

But it was too late for that…

Oh dear... looks like someone set off the pendant again. Will we be seeing another innocent pokemon die at the hands of this thing? Or is something even MORE sinister about to happen?

We'll have to wait and see... you and me both :p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

I have only read the prologue so far, but it looks like it's getting pretty good.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

WOW GOOD CHAPTER! Cliffhanger nice, cant wait for the next one!

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

So you think it was good then? Cause I wasn't convinced when I was writing it... but as I stated, it's not me that does the final judging :p

The cliffhanger was probably the best part for me... leaves you with some REAL suspense and yet more questions regarding what will happen. I'm all ears if you have any "theories" that you want to put up BTW... I won't necessarily tell you if you're right or not, but it'd be cool to see what YOU think will happen next.

Maybe I didn't like that chapter as much because I couldn't do something like the pika evo thing... that was probably the funniest bit I've written so far :D

Oh, and vaso, it should be pretty good, based on what I've been told so far. The chapters are all similar in terms of quality I reckon, and I've been told from peoples outside of the beach that it's good too, so... these guys/girls are my inspiration to continue :)

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Okies, don't expect this too often with my uni term coming up next week, and I'm needing to prepare for that over the weekend. However, I got the next chapter done, so let's see how the story unfolds!

Chapter 11 – The Darkness of the Void

“Eevee, no! You can’t give in to that thing! Please…”

Despite Calum’s desperate pleas, Eevee could do nothing to stop the inevitable. The black aura that was present against Trapinch had returned, fuelled by the energy of Haunter’s Dark Pulse attack. Calum tried to quickly call Eevee back before it did anything, but the light from the poke ball simply bounced off of the little dog. By this time, the black aura had focused itself once more into the life-draining Shadow Ball. But something was different this time… the ball was much larger than before! Eevee, whose eyes were as black as the midnight sky, created a smaller Shadow Ball in front of itself, which it then fired into the huge sphere. The resulting collision caused an immense explosion of dark energy across the entire stadium!

Seeing the threat to her trainer’s life, Mismagius rushed over to John, using Protect as she did so. Ryan ran over to Calum, who could only stare in fear at the magnitude of the attack. Kirlia, like Mismagius, saw the threat to her trainer, and reacted just in time to help. She teleported across to Calum and Ryan and unleashed her psychokinetic powers at full force, creating a brilliant flash of white light to counter the darkness.

The explosion rocked the stadium to its very core, almost causing the building to collapse in on itself. When the walls had stopped shaking, and the battlefield had cleared up, Eevee was lying motionless on the ground. It was completely exhausted by the magnitude of the attack it was forced to carry out… but John’s eyes weren’t looking at Eevee. His attention was drawn to Haunter, the only living thing in the stadium who couldn’t do anything about the incoming blast. Was it still alive?

“No… John, please tell me Haunter isn’t dead, PLEASE? I can’t take another death at Eevee’s hands so soon…” Calum fell to his knees, fearing the worst.

John looked up and smiled slightly. “Oh, it’s dead alright. That’s why it’s a GHOST silly! You might knock it out, but it doesn’t matter how hard you hit it – it’s already dead! I’ll prove it to you.” John, knowing that his pokemon wouldn’t be able to battle again for a while, pulled out his poke ball and called Haunter back. It disappeared into the green ball. “You see? It went back into the Dusk Ball easily enough… it can’t be inanimate if it can return to its ball now, can it?”

Relived to see that, Calum closed his eyes for a second before calling Eevee back. Whispering to the poke ball as he did so, he spoke, “I’m sorry Eevee… really, I am. I WILL find a way to get that thing off of you before it can take a hold on you again, I promise…”

“By the way…” John said, wishing to get a question off of his chest, “just WHAT happened there? My attack seemed to trigger some form of demonic action from Eevee… and you said this has happened before?”

Calum sighed, and then stood up to face John. “Whenever Eevee is struck by a powerful Dark attack like the one you used, the pendant it wears goes berserk. It holds the key to the world’s destruction… a dark void so intense that all could be lost to it if it is let loose. When the pendant is hit with dark energy, it triggers something from that void… causing death as it does so. Good job your pokemon was already dead then… otherwise it would surely have been by now.”

John stared at Calum, unsure with what to make of the facts presented to him. Shrugging his shoulders, he spoke in a jubilant voice, “well, enough of the morbid things, yes? Let’s get back to the battle! You still have one pokemon left to fight Mismagius… by the way, where did she go?”

Snapping back to reality, Calum looked around for Kirlia. She was nowhere to be found! However, a soft female voice spoke inside his mind a few seconds later.

“Are you safe master? You could have been really hurt by that Eevee of yours… I couldn’t allow that to happen.”

Upon finishing her “speech”, Kirlia teleported into view, directly facing Calum. However, it was no longer Kirlia that stood before Calum… she had become a LOT taller, not much shorter than Calum himself was. The ballerina skirt worn before was no longer present; in its place was a long, billowing white gown, which was green on the inside. Her hair had also changed… the long plaits at the sides were gone, and now the fine green hair curled both at the front and back of her head. The horns on her head had once again migrated, this time protruding through her chest and back. She held her delicate green arms out towards Calum, who could only stare at the marvel in front of him.

“You… can talk to me?” he asked, bewildered by the concept.

“That’s right,” she whispered to him. “I can use my psychic abilities to talk to you in your mind now… I can share my feelings more easily this way. And I WILL protect you no matter what master…”

“Gardevoir…” Calum was still too stunned to really say much. Gathering his composure again, he spoke to her, “shall we win this fight for Eevee then?”

“Of course… I would do anything for you, you know that.”

Teleporting to the middle of the battlefield, Gardevoir faced Mismagius, who cackled at her. She knew that she had the type advantage, and was willing to go all the way to make sure that it counted. Calum wasn’t about to let that get to him though.

“Gardevoir, Hypnosis!”

Gardevoir crossed her arms in front of her face, and forced Mismagius to close her eyes. Before the ghost knew what was going on, she had passed out. Undeterred, John had an idea.

“Mismagius, use Sleep Talk! Let’s show him that sleep isn’t always beneficial hmm?”

Mismagius began to chant in its sleep, causing one of its moves to be triggered! It sent a whitish-blue flame towards Gardevoir, who didn’t need Calum to tell her what to do in this case. She closed her eyes, focusing her power. Before long, she had created a white star-shaped shield in front of her that repelled the incoming flames. Calum was impressed.

“Mind reading has its benefits, doesn’t it?” he remarked; he was about to say to use Safeguard before Gardevoir executed the move. “Hmm… you probably know what I’m going to say next, but I’ll say it anyways. Calm Mind!”

Gardevoir closed her eyes again, this time in meditation. All of her senses heightened as she quietened her spirit. Fully focused for the battle ahead, she opened her eyes again, finding Mismagius groggily getting up as she did so. Seeing the opportunity, she asked Calum if she should attack.

“Of course, now’s the perfect time! Psychic!”

Crossing her arms once again, Gardevoir let loose an impressive burst of telekinetic power, amplified by her focused mind. Mismagius wasn’t really prepared for the blast, which stuck her full on. Cringing slightly as she floated back into position, she began to charge up lumps of dark energy to hurl at Gardevoir!

“That was a nasty attack, but how will you take THIS one Calum!?” John exclaimed, pleased at Mismagius for beginning to attack without his command. “Launch them Maggie – Shadow Ball fury!”

Mismagius released all of the attacks one after the other, each one heading directly for Gardevoir. Gardevoir knew this was coming though, and created a pinkish barrier of light protect herself a little from the assault. The wall weakened the blasts a fair bit, and her focused spirit also helped to soften the blow. Feeling Calum’s concern, she addressed him, “I’m fine, don’t worry. What should I do next?”

Calum thought for a second. “It can’t have a lot of health left after your first attack… let’s block its movements and take it down then! Thunder Wave!”

Gardevoir collected ambient energy to form a weak electrical pulse, which was fired towards Mismagius. She was still recovering from the intense barrage of attacks she had just sent, and so was unable to avoid this pulse. Crying in pain, she careered towards the ground, unable to maintain flight whilst paralysed. Sensing the opportunity to finish the fight, Gardevoir gathered her telekinetic energy together, firing it off in one gigantic wave of devastating force!

Unable to float to avoid the blast, Mismagius was caught full on again by the power of Gardevoir. This time, John knew there was no getting up this time. Mismagius had good special defense, but not enough to survive the intense attacks it was faced with. Calling the pokemon back, he walked over to Calum and Ryan to congratulate them.

“Well… it appears that I, like those before me, have fallen to your power Calum. Although it wasn’t just you that did well… congratulations to you as well Ryan! If only Vulpix had battled a little more beforehand, it could have been more useful to you. Have you considered evolving it as it is though?”

Ryan shook his head. “I have the stone, but I don’t want to evolve it too quickly… if I do, I fear that it might not have all the moves I want…”

John chuckled to himself. “Ok then, I can’t argue with that. Now, time to present you both with the Spectre Badge for winning the challenge!”

He held out his hand, which contained two clean badges in the shape of Mismagius. They were a jet-black colour however, unlike the real pokemon. After the trainers took their badges, John delved into his coat pocket and pulled out a dark purple disc.

“Here, a move you might want to teach Gardevoir there. This TM holds Shadow Ball… something that may come in handy for keeping that dark power of yours in check.”

Calum gratefully took the disc from John, and then looked at Gardevoir. Knowing what was about to be asked, she spoke to him. “I will learn the move if you want me to master. I trust that you know what is best…”

Upon hearing this, Calum presented her with the disc, which she took softly from him. Closing her eyes to focus, she drained the colour from the disc as she learned how to use the move it contained. Her arms glowed a faint black colour briefly as she handed the now transparent disc back to Calum, who put it away in his bag.

As Calum and Ryan headed north towards Rowan Town, Gardevoir talked to Calum again. “Hmm… so Eevee’s pendant holds the power to destroy the world then?” she asked, making sure of all the details. When Calum said yes to the question, she continued. “Well… what if this ‘power’ isn’t purely evil? What if it could CREATE a world in the right hands? I don’t think power and energy have minds of their own you know…”

Calum thought to himself, which Gardevoir picked up on. “Maybe she is right… perhaps if we control this power as it is released, we can harness it for the greater good? But am I strong enough to do that? I don’t know…”

Gardevoir quickly stopped these thoughts. “You can’t think like that… you have been chosen as the protector of the world – why would you be chosen if you weren’t strong enough to wield the power correctly? I believe in you…”

Upon finishing, she went back into her poke ball. Ryan looked surprised – he didn’t know what was going on since Gardevoir wasn’t communicating with him.

The pair had made their way into a vast mountainous region, which was sparsely covered with trees. Many wild pokemon were visible here, most of which were in the skies. A flock of Pidgeotto flew overhead, making their way over to the mountains. On the ground, a pair of Phanpy could be seen play fighting, showing off their impressive strength. Ryan thought about catching one, but he lacked confidence after losing so easily to that Dark Pulse attack. He just wanted to get to the next town with Calum, so that they could learn the final legend surrounding the Void Pendant.

As they made their way through the rocky mounds on earth around them, night was falling fast. As the darkness came down, Calum and Ryan found a small cave to set up camp in for the night. The two joked around for a time, contemplating over their latest victory. Calum let Eevee out of his poke ball to check on his condition. He appeared to be fine, although you could see the sadness in his eyes. Still confused after the outburst earlier, he simply cuddled into Calum and went to sleep. Chuckling softly at the little dog, he curled up himself and went to sleep as well.

In the night, Gardevoir released itself from her poke ball, sensing a disturbance outside the cave. Fearing that the disturbance might harm Calum, she focused her mind to sense exactly what was around. When she found the source of her worry, she telepathically communicated to the being that caused it.

“You can show yourself now… I know your there.”

A strong male voice communicated with her. “You knew I was there? But how? I’m never discovered…”

“I can sense emotions, the presence of living things,” Gardevoir said matter-of-factly. “I sense anxiety within you though… what troubles you?”

The voice hesitated briefly, and then spoke quietly. “A disaster is about the strike in these mountains, and your trainer is the only one who can help… I sense a great power here, one that I’ve never felt before. He MUST be the one… please, we need him now!”

“Sir, we’ve finally managed to locate all of the people we sent to the pokemon world!”

Alex had phoned his boss to give him the news he had been waiting for over a week for. His team had finally managed to find all ten of the tournament players that were sent to the pokemon world at their hands.

“Congratulations… although it took a long time. So… where’s my son? He has a task to do, and I intend to make sure that he fulfils it!”

Alex trembled slightly at the gruff reaction his boss had given. His voice showed this as he replied. “Your son is currently at Palm City; it looks like he’s destroying the gym leader there. Another of our test subjects…” he trailed off, thinking of what to say next. He didn’t need to say anything though; his boss was next to speak.

“Excellent! He’s doing quite nicely I see. What about his rival, Calum? I’m sure they haven’t MET yet, otherwise they’d probably be travelling together… and we can’t have that. I trust you found that HE has the pendant, correct?”

“That is correct sir,” replied a nervous Alex, unsure as to where this conversation was going. “His Eevee possesses the pendant you speak of, and he is on his way to Rowan Town in the northwest of the region. It appears that he is going to get his fourth badge.”

“He’ll catch up quick enough,” the boss retorted, not showing nearly as much enthusiasm for this information. “Your next task is to find a way to communicate with these people; you should send out more of my men into the region to accomplish this. They can establish a link back to us as well as find our ‘heroes’…”

“Understood Mr. Sneddon; I’ll get right on it.”

Saying this, Alex put the phone down and went back to his team to brief them on the task at hand. Mr. Sneddon smiled at his desk.

“Soon… soon I will have that power…”

Hmm...I can't help but think that more and more questions are asked as I go along with this story, and precious few are answered. Who, or what, was Gardevoir talking to? Who is the son of Mr. Sneddon? What kind of catastrophe is the voice warning Gardevoir of? And I wonder what she meant when she spoke to "me" about the pendant?

Incase you didn't notice, the itilicised text was designed to show when thoughts were used to convey speech, as opposed to physically talking. Since you know a pokemon cannot talk, Gardevoir "talks" using her psychic powers.

What do you think? I'll see what I can do for the next chapter within a week or so, but term starting and job hunting WILL slow things down.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

WOW GOOD CHAPTER like usual! I like how the thing with eevee worked out! And if your wondering I'm pretty sure who Mr. Sneddon son is:p But i wont say it here if you dont want me to:p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Take a guess... PM me if you don't want to say it here :p

I'm glad you think the work is still good though. What do you think of the Gardevoir "speech" sections though? I reckon that they can add yet MORE depth to this story... which is always something I'm up for. Plus, she can finally show emotion a little better <3

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Well as for Gardevoirs speech I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it. It's not that I dont think it won't help the fic, I'm just not a fan of non-legendary pokemon talking:p. However I do like how you handled the evolution and that you explained the telekinesis aspect. It will help to show emotions better I'll give you that! But with someone to talk to it seems like you added a new main character as opposed to another pokemon(which Isn't neccecarily a bad thing.) If I had one suggestion it would be not to do this a whole lot.

What should I do next?
It just seems to slow down the battle a bit. But you did fit it into the story well with the psychic sense of concern! As a whole, I think Gardavoir talking will really help the fan fic! Hope I helped somewhat:p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Hmm... fair point. It was more or less a substitute for looking at the trainer for commands, but perhaps it didn't come off as well as I had hoped... oh well.

Just remember that it doesn't actually TALK, it's using it's powers to convey its thoughts. It's kinda like what Lapras did in the anime... I can't remember if that was on a film or the series, but there was a point where it "talked" to Ash.

When you think about it, my character's pokemon have always been main characters... well, mostly Eevee, Kirlia (as it was) and Raichu. They have seen the most action to date, and they are far and away the most loyal. They're also central to the story in their own ways. If you want it another way, Gardevoir has merely adapted her role in the story... becoming more or less the guardian of the team. As she should be really :D

You've helped a lot there though - it makes me sure that I've done the right thing here :). I'll be cautious with how I handle this though, since it COULD blow up if used incorrectly. I'm confident with it though :)

BTW... one question still remains. Who (or what) was talking to Gardevoir at the end of the chapter? Any idea? There IS a clue there... if you pay enough attention :p. Read it again closely if you have to and tell me what you think.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

That was a good chapter but Tranpinch was a useless pokemon.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

I think the talking Lapras was in the movie:p Anyway your right its not "talking" but its communicating very well. True the pokemon have main character abilities and thats great since your right i havnt heard much of growlithe, vulpix, and staravia lately. If your trying to make it the guardian of the team then you have nailed that perfectly!

As for who or what Gardevoir is communicating with I honestly have no idea. Although I think i saw the clue. The fact that Mr. Sneddon wants more people in the region could give me an idea. Although not 100% sure. Actually I'm not even 50% sure, its merely just an idea! Can't wait though!

Which is why it *cough DIED cough* ;)

actually, it almost won the battle for Lewis before that... so it wasn't THAT useless.

You're reading too much into it... the clue is in the discussion. It's a single word, and that's all I'm saying on the matter. I already know myself (duh! :p) so just wait and see if you can't guess ;)

Oh, and who voted for the "it's too long" option in the poll? Not that I care for those who can't be bothered reading anyhow, but... it irks me slightly. Oh well, can't satisfy everyone <_<

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Ah thats just like me to read ot far into the things:p There are a couple words that stand out to me but I'm not going to make a guess. And as you probably know i voted for YES! so it wasnt me:p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Well, I sent my message to you directing you closer towards the answer... if you can't get it now, tough :p

It'll have to be Sunday (most likely) that I can try and get the chapter done... but I'll do my best to give it a go then. After all, I have to create the next round of entertainment for you guys ;)
