RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Wow that was a great chapter, I'm usually not a huge fan of those long battle scenes but that was great!

You said it best though, and so it begins. I cannot wait to see what you do with what is to come next, good luck.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

OMIGOSH I totally forgot to reply! :O Have no fears, as I will do now! :p

Quite a hefty match out there! The Wailord made me go OMG, as well as the Gyarados versus the ''Chocolate Dog''!

I also think I'm speaking for us all when I say ''hurry up and show us what's inside the void! :p'', but still I wanted to say that! :D

Keep it up, and I can't wait for the next chapter!!!

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

/me looks at the last post time.

/me whistles

God, it's been THAT long?

I guess so. Once upon a time I had a fair bit of spare time to pour into this. That disappeared... and I know a lot of you sat in wait, wishing for the next instalment. That took months to get out... and it may well be a long time again before the next chapter comes out. OR, if I keep my writing will up again, it may be within a week or something. That's just it - I never know when I'm going to have the will to write this.

However, this chapter, all 4720 words of it, will hopefully be enough to go some way towards saying sorry for being so... random, with when I write and reveal this. Just know this - I aim to please, and I think this chapter should please some... even if it doesn't go as far as they might like, and it doesn't reveal TOO much.

I half-heartedly suggest that all of you read through the rest of the story before this; come on, even those who read it before won't remember most if it, it's been over half a year between 2 chapters after all (going from Chapter 19 to now). But I don't expect most people to have the time to read through what now stands at around 63000 words, and some old readers may still know a bit of what's going on anyhow, so... whatever you choose to do really.

So, without further ado... here we go:

Chapter 21 – Origins…

A couple of days have passed since our last encounter. After defeating Daisy and gaining possession of the invaluable Surf HM, Calum and Ryan decided to take a quick relaxation break to rewind and prepare for the journey ahead. Conveniently, this coincided with a particularly bad storm out at sea, right in the direction they intended to go in. Coincidence? Perhaps… or perhaps not. In any case…

Jason sat calmly at his desk, watching a monitor on his left for any weather updates regarding Pokémon Island. The surrounding room had been greatly transformed since he kicked Gregor out of Team Leafre; gone were the dangerous shades of green, replace by vivid, poisonous shades or purple to match his attire. The room was extremely dark, lit only by the glow of the computer screens in front of the strong man. A visual alert flashed momentarily on a large screen at the front of the room, before an old man in a sinister grey jacket appeared on the display. He addressed Jason in a soft, dangerous voice. Not that this bothered Jason – he was more than used to dealing with this man.

“Jason… report on the status of our little crusaders.”

Jason turned round to address his interrogator, who appeared on the lucid monitor before him. His pale brown eyes were fixed unwavering on the screen, almost as if he was trying to stare the speaker down. After a couple of seconds, his gaze shifted to a screen on his right, apparently displaying the information that the speaker requested.

“Calum just acquired his fifth badge, along with the Surf HM, and will be proceeding to Pokémon Island shortly… or at least he SHOULD be. If not…” flexing his muscles and cracking his knuckles, he grinned menacingly, revealing an array of dulled yellow teeth. “We will make sure he goes!”

The speaker seemed pleased. “Good… you have done well Jason. Tell me, do you actually have any idea just what is going on here? Do you know WHY I sent you to remove my son from his position at Team Leafre?”

Puzzled by the question, Jason stood clueless for a brief time. “Not really sir… I must admit, I don’t see what the connection between your son, Calum and the void is here. I’m assuming you do know though… care to enlighten me?”

The speaker laughed quietly. “Oh Jason, silly fool, I wouldn’t dream of letting you find that out from me… however, did you notice the strange, jewelled poke ball that my son is holding? Calum has one too… and I know that his friend Ryan received one too… but what does it all mean? Ha…” Voice dripping with sarcasm, he let his words sink into Jason for a moment, before continuing. “Well, I don’t expect you to understand that… just make sure you get over there yourself; this is one spectacle you DON’T want miss. And believe me… we need the result of all of this, so don’t disappoint me.”

“Right…” came the retort from Jason, visibly angered by his superior’s open patronization. The comm. link ended, sending the bulky man into a stormy rage at the insolence of his “master”. “Who does he think he is, mocking me like that!?” he though angrily to himself, slamming his fist on the desk. The desk made an awful cracking sound from the force of the impact. Holding his head in his hands, Jason calmed slightly and rationalized his thoughts a little more. “As if he really knows what is going on either… it’s times like this that make me wonder why I still listen to the old coot. Well, maybe the answers I seek are on this island after all… or should I say the power I desire!” With this, the violent man took off out of the room, a deep purple poke ball in his hand.

“You’re getting better Ryan!”

Calum and Ryan were having one final training session outside the pokémon center before heading out on their way. Both trainers had made full use of the acquired Surf HM, teaching it to all available pokémon for the journey ahead. A full-scale battle was on the agenda this time, and things weren’t looking to good for Ryan. He was two-one down in terms of the score line, although he had just pulled a point back against the ever-impressive Gardevoir. He was left with just Dratini, who was looking more than a little nervous about being in her first battle. Having just one opponent left to battle, and seeing as how Milotic had already been knocked out, Calum decided that this might be a good opportunity to hone his faithful hound’s skills before the trip to the island. After all, based on type alone this match didn’t favour him – it was a good opportunity to show him the kind of adversity he was about to face.

“Growlithe, let’s go! We can take his Dratini, for sure!”

Growlithe emerged onto the pavement, raring to go. The timid Dratini looked on apprehensively, despite being at a slight advantage against the rowdy fire type. Ryan quickly remembered that dragon resisted fire, causing him to question Calum’s judgement.

“Why did you send Growlithe out? He’s at a disadvantage… oh well, like I’m going to worry! Dratini, whip up a Twister!”

Calum smiled. “Twister, hmm? Ok, Growlithe, use Heat Wave on the Twister!”

Responding to the motions of her trainer, Dratini flapped her little wing-like ears and span round on the spot, generating a moderately large whirlwind. This spinning column of air teetered on the spot before going after the young dragon’s intended target. Meanwhile, Growlithe was gathering all the thermal energy it could muster. When the twister was just one metre away, he exhaled an extremely hot breath that blew right into the mini-tornado in front of him! It didn’t STOP the air mass; in contrast, it only seemed to speed it up… however, some of the attack still made it through to meet Dratini, who flinched slightly from the unnatural heat. In the meantime, Growlithe took SOME damage from the now fiery air attack… but he quickly shook it off. After the wind died down, it was plain to see that Growlithe was even more energetic than before, despite being hit by the large air column!

“Ok, THAT’S what we needed! Growlithe, show him how good your Flash Fire boost is! Flare Blitz!”

“What!? Dratini, no!”

But there was nothing Ryan could do. Already worn down from her last battle, and not fully sure of the situation as it was, Dratini couldn’t bear the brunt of Growlithe’s vicious fire tackle. She was flung a good twenty metres back from the force of the charge, and skidded across the concrete floor, covered in singe marks. Growlithe wasn’t much better off; panting heavily, he eventually gave up the fight to stay on his feet, and collapsed in a heap on the pavement. Both Ryan and Calum congratulated each other and called their respective pokémon back, before going into a passionate discussion about their last match. Ryan was still a little disappointed about the loss, but Calum cheered him up by reminding him how much better the game went compared to their last one. He also remarked about how close Staravia was to evolving again, which pleased Ryan even more. Before long, the conversation moved to Growlithe.

“Hmm… I wonder if I should evolve Growlithe before we go…”

Ryan looked inquisitively at Calum. “Oh? What brings this on? I thought you liked Growlithe as he is?”

Calum nodded. “I do… but this is going to be extremely tough. I want Growlithe to be the best he can be, but… I have a feeling that there’s nothing more he can LEARN as a Growlithe. At least to me, it seems like it is almost time for him to evolve… but I don’t know. What do you think?”

Closing his eyes for a second, Ryan thought carefully about what to say in reply. Seconds later, he opened them again, with a hint of eureka in his expression. “You know… why don’t you ask Growlithe if it wants to evolve? I’m sure he’s the best one to consult about his own state after all!”

“You know… that’s it! That’s EXACTLY what I should’ve thought of!” Turning to face his fiery pooch, Calum bent down to his level, holding the warm, glowing ruby in his hand. “Growlithe… the task ahead of us is going to be most difficult. I’m concerned that, as you are, it may be too much for you to handle. Don’t give me that look!” he added hastily, seeing the forlorn expression forming on Growlithe’s face. “You’re an extremely capable pokémon, one of the best I could have ever asked for. But this task… this is potentially beyond even our power. I mean, the very world is on our shoulders, of course it’s going to be tough!”

“But I guess I should get to the point. I’m not going to force you to evolve if you feel you can handle everything as it is, without the extra abilities that evolution would bring. I’m going to give you the choice… so, from the bottom of my heart, do you want to evolve now?”

For a moment, Growlithe didn’t know what to do. After all, it was almost unheard of, from what he was told of trainers by his parents, for a trainer to actually ASK their pokémon if they wanted to evolve. He almost felt privileged, being given the OPTION to choose his own fate. He briefly considered what his parents would’ve wanted for him. His mother was a proud Arcanine, always doing her best to protect her children. He thought of what it would mean to her to be the mother of a strong, fearless Arcanine, willing to protect all that he held dear without even breaking a sweat. Surely his mother would be extremely proud of him for accomplishing a task such as this.

And then there was his father. He didn’t know too much about his father, since he left the family at a young age, but he DID know that he was a rather exquisite Ninetales, always calm and collected on the surface. The puppy didn’t know too much about how his father thought, except that he would always adapt to the current situation with shrewd determination. Knowing the difficulty of the task at hand, his father probably would’ve evolved as well. Two votes for evolution, then…

He then considered his current family; the pokémon he travelled with all the time. So many of them had evolved, and become much stronger in the process… and all of them had retained their personalities completely. Azumarill was as much fun as ever, Gardevoir was always willing to help out, Staravia remained as proud as ever… and then there was Ninetales. Growlithe thought back to his days in the wild, back when Vulpix was taken in by his mother. Ever since that day, the two were the best of friends, and nothing could ever separate them. That remained the case even now; the two were like brother and sister. But… Growlithe had always thought of her as more than that. He had always thought there could’ve been something special there… could that potentially happen if he evolved? They would both be mature, after all… he quickly dismissed these thoughts though, unwilling to dwell in fantasy that he really shouldn’t be thinking of in times like this.

Growlithe took one last look through his mind, searching for any realistic reason for not evolving at this time. He found only one; the time when Eevee attempted evolution. He may not have been released at this point, but he knew what happened as well as everyone – the evolution failed, and Eevee was reduced to tears as a result. This was also dismissed however; Growlithe remembered the pendant that Eevee carries at all times, and how it had reacted to the attempted evolution. Seeing as how he wasn’t wielding a pendant like it, he concluded that it would be impossible for his attempt at evolution to end up the same way, should he undertake it. Weighing up both sides of the argument, he saw only one choice…

“Well?” asked Calum a couple of minutes later, seeing the indecision on Growlithe’s face. The young dog looked back at his master “He wants me to evolve as well,” he thought to himself. “I can feel it... he wants me to be the best I can be. Just like mother…”

With those words echoing inside his mind, he made his decision. Hesitating only for a second, he extended his paw to encompass the glowing red gem, closing his eyes as the warm white glow surrounded his body. Knowing the weight difference between Growlithe and Arcanine, Calum braced himself for a very much heavier paw to support once the evolution process finished.

The process was as quick as ever. It only took mere seconds to complete the evolution, but the end result was perhaps more dramatic than any other evolution to date. The pokémon once known as Growlithe was so different from the magnificent beast that now stood before Calum and Ryan. He was almost three times the size of his previous form. The beige tuft of fur that covered his head before had grown enormously, and now formed a colossal mane that stretched almost to the ground. Flame-shaped tufts had also appeared on his legs, giving the appearance of a billowing flame in the wind. The three straight black stripes that once covered Growlithe’s back were gone; in their place were an elegant pattern of much thicker lines, covering the entire body.

Even though he had braced himself, the magnitude of the weight change got to Calum pretty quickly. His bent knee quickly gave way as his body crashed onto the floor, leaving Arcanine to hastily remove his foot from his master’s outstretched hand. Getting to his feet, the young man faced his new, rather sheepish pokémon. Even at his full height, Calum was still slightly shorter than the giant dog he now commanded. “Heh, I didn’t expect you to be so heavy after you evolved Arcanine…” he whispered, rubbing his wrist slightly with his hand. “So, how do you feel buddy?”

Arcanine nodded vigorously, barking joyously at the success of his evolution. Seeing the happy reaction, Calum chuckled.

“I bet you’re happy after that,” he said mockingly. “I bet you’re super fast now though… let’s test that out!” Without a second’s hesitation, he jumped onto the pooch’s back. With one hand firmly holding onto Arcanine’s mane and the other pointing forwards, Calum shouted just one word. “Charge!!”

“Calum, wait! What about our tri-“

But Ryan was much too late to stop Calum’s enthusiasm. As instructed, Arcanine ran forwards, faster than he had ever expected. Almost tripping over with the first few paces of his newfound speed, the poor dog didn’t know what to think at first. He soon got accustomed to the change in pace however, and before long his insane speed was mastered. Barely hanging on as it was, Calum decided to test the brakes as well.

“STOP!!”

Arcanine screeched to a halt, much faster than any car could. Calum, however, couldn’t stop so fast – his momentum carried onwards, and he was sent flying for a good thirty meters beyond where his faithful hound had stopped. Picking himself up off of the ground and dusting himself off, he decided to take a brief look at the ground Arcanine had covered.

“Amazing…” he remarked, truly impressed. “You must’ve covered well over a mile in just over a minute… and even at that speed, you stopped within fifteen meters… incredible. Truly incredible. You’re amazing Arcanine!”

The proud dog was elated to have such a compliment given to him from his master. He looked around for a couple of seconds, not knowing where they were now. Calum wasn’t concerned, however.

“Ah, you went in a straight line basically. We can go back the way we came. Only… be a little easier on the brakes this time please? I don’t want to be flung off like that if I can help it!”

Arcanine nodded sheepishly, and then took off back towards Ryan (after letting Calum back on his back of course). It only took a couple of minutes to get back to a rather furious Ryan, who wasted no time in mounting his assault on Calum.

“You… you IDIOT! We’re supposed to be leaving to go and save the world, and all you care about is showing off your new pokémon’s speed? You should be ashamed of yourself!”

“Calm down Ryan,” Calum said sternly, attempting to reinstate his authority. “You might not think of it like this, but that was as much a training lesson as it was a joyride. Arcanine learns Extremespeed at high levels when it evolves, and I wanted to see if mine had the kind of speed to use it before we left. Such pace might be extremely useful to us after all…”

Ryan faltered. “Oh… oh all right, if you say so.” He looked out to the ocean. “But now that you have had your fun, it’s about time we left, don’t you think?”

“Agreed. Let’s head down to the shore so we can set off then.”

Making one final check to see if they had everything, Calum and Ryan headed to Palm Beach, looking for a relatively safe place to depart from to the ominous island that awaited them. Arcanine, keen to show off his new services, picked the two up and ran them along the shore at a slightly gentler pace than earlier. Having now been on the back of the great beast, Ryan quickly forgave Calum for the distracting run earlier; he immediately saw the appeal in riding on the back of such an awe-inspiring animal.

After around five minutes of running, the trio came across a small pier. It appeared to be unmanned, and disused for quite some time based on the level of dilapidation. A slightly bent lighthouse, coloured like a palm tree, stood around ten meters away from the wooden dock. This also appeared to be uninhabited, based on the condition of the place.

“Looks like nobody has used this pace for a while…” whispered Ryan cautiously. He didn’t quite trust the surroundings yet, but he had little choice.

“This is the best we have I think,” Calum remarked, sharing some of Ryan’s uncertainties. Nobody appears to have been here for months now; it seems the ideal place to leave, when nobody should know that we’ve left.” After a couple of minutes to collect their thoughts and send out their aquatic pokémon (Ryan sent out both Azumarill and Dratini, for safety), they finally set sail towards Pokémon Island.

The pair couldn’t have picked a better day to take to the ocean. The weather was perfectly clear, without cloud or even wind around. The sea was a brilliant sapphire colour, with only the gentlest waves caressing the shore. Even as Calum and Ryan began to make their way out to sea, the waves never really became much larger.

Several pokémon along the way decided that the group weren’t getting past them without a fight. Among them was a particularly large Tentacruel, who seemed to be excessively territorial. Seeing no other way around it, Ryan sent Staravia out to do the honours.

“Staravia, strike it down with Aerial Ace!”

Artfully dodging the jellyfish’s Bubblebeam attack, the adolescent starling arced through the sky and dove towards Tentacruel, making his mark by striking it cleanly on the forehead. Its red jewel pulsed angrily, not yet willing to admit defeat. Staravia attempted another dive, but this time Tentacruel was ready for him. Just before the attack landed, the shrewd jellyfish caught him with 4 of its tentacles and squeezed hard. Staravia screeched in pain, showing ominous signs of a dangerous poison coursing through his veins. Ryan gasped, shocked to see the events unfolding. Calum couldn’t bear to watch any longer.

“The time to act is now… Skarmory, go! Brave Bird!”

Calum’s metallic falcon came rushing out of his poké ball, sneering as it faced Tentacruel. Then it noticed Staravia in its grasp, and the sneer turned to hatred. He wasted no time in executing a difficult and dangerously low dive, straight into the body of the occupied jellyfish. This took it completely by surprise; not only did it relinquish its grip on poor Staravia in the process, but it disappeared under the surface of the water, never resurfacing to bring the fight back to Skarmory. It was just as well, as Skarmory had managed to find itself temporarily underwater due to the speed at which he had dived. Screeching, he re-emerged after a couple of seconds, as if afraid that he would rust from exposure to the salt water. Calum could only laugh quietly at his pokémon’s frightened reaction.

“You’ll be fine Skarmory…” he said, trying desperately to keep a straight face. “You just need to Roost it all off when we get to shore. I’ll try not to call on you until we’re there, ok?” The metal bird was glad to here this, and returned without question. Ryan had caught his own bird before it fell into the water, and had already used the best healing item he had to revive it; a Full Restore bought at the same time as the evolution stones.

“It’s ok Staravia, you did me proud,” he said, smiling at the injured bird. “I’ll take you to a pokémon center as soon as we are done… and I’ll try not to use you unless I have to. Take a long rest now!”

Very little else happened for the next hour. Dratini was having fun warding off the small Wingull and Tentacool that decided to try and block its path. The weather began to take a turn for the worst as it grew darker, however, and it felt like Calum and Ryan were still no closer to their destination. It WAS closer though, and before they knew it, they were within a miles of the shoreline. Eevee let itself out to get a closer look, and sat happily on Calum’s head as he and Milotic glided through the water. This was perhaps his first mistake, however. The weather turned even stormier as soon as Eevee emerged from his poké ball. The chocolate dog’s joy soon turned to distress; even more so when he heard the booming voice emanating from the sky.

“So… the pendant returns to us at last! But there are humans with it… we cannot have this. There cannot be humans involved when the pendant is restored here – we cannot take that chance. On behalf of Pokémon Island – no, the WORLD – I will give you one chance to leave. Leave now and we will not have to harm you."

Calum looked to the sky, trying to find the source of the voice. Concluding that it must have come from a psychic pokémon when he couldn’t find a source, he turned to the sky in defiance. “I cannot do that,” he shouted at the top of his voice. “I made a promise to this little Eevee to find his family and remove the burden of the pendant from his shoulders, and I never go back on my promises!” His eyes turned to the frightened creature resting on his head. “Don’t worry… I won’t be leaving you after all we’ve been through. Come back for now; I’ll let you out when we reach the island, as I have a bad feeling about this…”

The source of the voice took a couple of minutes to itself before speaking again. “Very well. It pains me to think that you are foolish enough to try and come here, despite all the trouble you might cause… no matter. We are waiting for the chosen one to come in possession of the pendant. If you are truly those chosen by legend, you should be able to easily make it through… this.”

As soon as the voice had finished speaking, three red Gyarados appeared before the now apprehensive Calum and Ryan. The pair could only watch as the giant serpents formed a triangle around them, cutting off all escape routes. They began circling the pair - slowly at first, but quickly increasing speed. Calum wasn’t sure what was going on… until he felt a huge force underneath the water. Looking down frantically, all he could see was an immense whirlpool opening up below him!

Ryan screamed in his panic. There was no way out, and even if they could escape, they were still nearly half a mile away from shore. All seemed lost…

Dratini was still in the water at this point. She cried, scared of the giant dragons that were attempting to send the boys to their doom. Her black jewel glowed temporarily, and within thirty seconds her mother was on the scene, assessing the situation. Calum and Ryan noticed this. Both shouted to the orange dragon to come down and help them. They didn’t have much time left…

“Dragonite, take Ryan to the island, NOW! There’s no time to waste…. Grab him and get out of here!”

Doing as Calum commanded, the marine dragon hoisted the frightened teenager up onto her back, ready for transport. But before she could do the same for Calum, the Gyarados attacked her! Enraged at the prospect of someone freeing their prey from the whirlpool, the trio had formed a giant Twister to tear into the hapless dragon. She managed to evade most of the attack (Ryan clinging on for dear life), but she had no way to get back to Calum, who was now struggling to stay on the surface with Milotic. Struggling to find the energy to speak, Calum gave one last request.

“Dragonite… get Ryan… to the island… go…”

“Calum, no!”

But Ryan’s words came too late. Calum had lost the energy to continue battling the fierce whirlpool, and had been viciously plunged under the surface. Ryan could only stare at the spot in disbelief as Dragonite flew at top speed away from the scene, desperately wishing to carry out her appointed task without being shot out of the sky by the Ice Beams that the red serpents underneath her.

“Calum… you can’t… no…”

“Well well… this is a most unexpected turn of events…”

Gregor was watching the dramatic events unfold from a cliff facing towards the ocean. He had already made it to Pokémon Island, and was awaiting Calum’s arrival. He never imagined that anything as brutal as that would happen though…

“I felt for sure he would have made it here without resistance… he can’t have gone though, can he?” Gregor quietly thought that idea through thought for a minute. “No,” he concluded. “Calum is much tougher than that. He MUST still be alive… after all, he has the pendant, as well…” - looking down briefly at the emerald poké ball in his hand – “as one of the Void Balls. No, he cannot have died from that. Still… if he HAS died, I’m going to need to work a little harder than I thought before I can take what’s rightfully mine. I guess that Dragonite is going to drop the devastated Ryan off soon… I should go and pay them a visi-“

Something caught his attention for a few seconds. A group of three teenage trainers appeared to be running down the path behind him, heading towards the beach. They had seen some of the terrible events out at sea, and were looking to try and help. What caught Gregor’s eye, however, was the poké ball that one of the boys had in his hand. It was entirely red, with several coloured crystals adorned on it. Gregor saw what this was immediately.

“That’s the final Void Ball! But how did HE come across it? And… how did they even GET here?” He thought to himself, and smiled maliciously for a second. “Doesn’t matter. I have to get that ball if my true wish is to be completed, so I will have to get it from them anyhow… I think it’s about time I paid them a little visit!”

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

You owed me an awesome chapter, so I owe you a reply...! Let's even the score, hm? :D

Simply LOVED how Growlithe goes K9, and I think it really fits the story and the situation...! (also lol'd @ the Vulpix + Growlithe ''love story'' there, haha) It was also rather cool to see those flashbacks from Growlithe's past, and his consideration how the other team mates came out of the evolutions they had... really ''fleshy'', but it was a good read right there!

The boat part went a little... unexpected I guess, though a little anime refference is too obvious to me! :p Not that its a bad thing, mind you.

And I'll defenitly look out to use any eevee's in the feature, since I like my sunny weather! ;)

Now then, that leaves us at two questions...

HOW WILL THIS UNFOLD?!!

and

WHEN WILL WE GET THE NEXT CHAPTER?!!

Keep it up, your fans are waiting!

Greetz, James :D

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

WOW! This chapter, was remarkable. The sheer drama of it at the end had me sitting on the edge of my seat...literally :p I have to say as awesome as the cliffhanging battle at the end was, I truly enjoyed your take on the Pokemon psyche during Growlithe's evolution truly brilliant!

I have to say this has me feeling very nostalgic today as I remember our little project, makes me want to write again!

This awesome chapter was definitely worth waiting, I only hope the next one comes sooner! Maybe put an weekend to good use? :p Whenever you get it done, I'll be right here reading it! This chapter, so awesome!

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

I'm glad you both enjoyed it! From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

MK, you might want to give me a couple of pokémon lists regarding... your lot. You know what I mean. Now is the time for me to get them, if you will ;D

I already have about 3 pages of the next chapter done. This last one spanned 9 pages, and it MIGHT not be done at that. If I get far enough in, a battle might take this one to more than 9, we'll see. I was doing other stuff today - teambuilding for the 4th tourney, and going to play football and tennis at the gym (gasp! Yes, I go out for sports sometimes too ;D), but I might give it another go at the weekend.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Haha. Nice. I remember this. Good to see you working on it. Now just don't give up on it and let the tale die! :D

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Good work as always Cal! ^_^ Arcanine's evolution was awes- swee- epi- ::somewordhere::.

I'm looking forward to seeing more, good luck.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Woo, PMJ was here too. :D

Both of you save me from double-posting here, so kudos for that ^_^

That's right, I found the time last night to go on and create the next chapter. This one sets the stage for a lot of fighting to come, and everything is building up to the climax! D:

A couple of points before we begin:

1) The first section is going to look oddly familiar to some. And by some I mean anyone who has read PMJ's fic. It dawned on me as I was writing this that the first section felt almost exactly like a less gruesome form of what he did with one of his characters... but that isn't where the inspiration came from. It actually came from Harry Potter, of all places.

2) Our maybe not so secret secret now - originally, me and MK63 were going to interlink our fics and write separate halves of this action section to come. It unfortunately dissolved though - Matt stopped writing his fic long before I stopped mine, and the plan sorta fell through. However, MY end is coming up now - the characters Gregor saw at the end of the last chapter? Those are his, and they are about to come into the fray now ^_^

(BTW MK, looking at the sprites you made for your group, I decided to change Ellen's clothes to red - two green people is boring ;D )

Now that THAT is done, enjoy! :D

Chapter 22 – Fates of the Chosen Ones

Life is a strange beast sometimes. One minute, everything is going fine, not a care in the world to be had. Next… you’re turned upside down, unable to contemplate how things could possibly be any worse. It is often said that one’s reaction to the latter defines you as a person. After all, how one handles adversity surely shows how much bravery one has?

Dealing with bad times isn’t the only thing that defines a person, however. It’s fair to say that all actions a person takes define who they are really… now, in the face of world-threatening danger, we finally get to see what our “heroes” are truly made of…

“Calum… please… you must awaken…”

No response.

“Calum… come on… you have to wake up! I know you’re still alive… you have to be!”

Still no response. Gardevoir became agitated.

“Calum… please…”

The room around Calum was completely devoid of everything – colour, decoration, even life itself. Calum lay on the floor, sleeping restlessly. A red and white Absol appeared out of nowhere with a loud pop – this was enough to wake Calum from his sleep. He groaned as he awoke, squinting to get a glimpse of what disturbed him, he noticed the white and red panther behind him. He quickly scrambled to his feet, tensely staring at the creature. He quickly made a move to send his own Absol out, but couldn’t; his poké balls had all disappeared!

He stood still, trying to stare the creature in front of him down. “You’re not my Absol,” he said quietly, not wanting to make a wrong move. “What are you? And where am I?”

The red Absol stared placidly back at Calum. “Where do you want to be?” it replied, as calm as a summer breeze. “This is YOUR world now… take your pick!”

Calum looked confused. “My world? But I wasn’t here before… the last thing remember was the storm, and a psychic voice warding me and Ryan away from the island.” He closed his eyes, concentrating on his final memory. “And then… when I said we weren’t leaving… the Gyarados came! Dragonite came to help us, but it only managed to pick up Ryan.”

Absol nodded. “So you know what happened next then?”

Calum closed his eyes again, deep in his own thoughts now. “I… I remember telling Dragonite to get Ryan out of there. Then…” he gasped. “The whirlpool took me under the water! I couldn’t breathe, and I had no way of escaping…”

He froze on the spot. Almost not wanting to ask the question burning so deeply in his mind, he hesitated. But he couldn’t hold it back for long; he had to know.

“Does that mean I’m… dead?

Absol’s expression remained unchanged. “As I said, you are wherever you want to be. You should be thankful – very few people visit this place.”

Calum’s curiosity perked up. “Really? Why might that be?”

“This place… is a gateway. A gateway between the living and the dead. Normally, a person is either truly alive, or truly dead. However… in exceptional circumstances, one has the opportunity to choose whether they live or die. In this case, your body is living, but barely. It is just possible to go back now, resume the life you had. But of course, you could choose to end it here, go on to the other side… where you could truly have anything you wanted. That’s what this place truly is – for those who choose to die, this place serves as a taste of what’s to come.”

Calum couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “So lemme get this straight. I’m dead, but not quite dead… you’re saying that I can CHOOSE whether or not I die now? Is there some sort of drawback for those who choose to live or something?”

Absol’s gaze and expression remained unchanged, despite the brutal questioning. “There are no obvious disadvantages for going back… but be warned that this place is only available once. Once you have been here, you cannot ever return. The mind can only ever withstand one trip here, so choose wisely…”

“I don’t have to make a decision over this – it was already made a LONG time ago! I made a promise… a promise to my little Eevee… and that promise means more to me than ANYTHING. I CANNOT allow myself to break that promise, and not even death will stop me. I’m going back, and that’s the end of it.”

For the first time since it arrived, the red Absol’s gaze broke, as he closed his eyes. “Very well. I can see that you have noble intentions indeed. Fitting of the chosen one really… so, all you have to do is make this place your own, and grant yourself the way back to the living. If your mind is capable of doing this, you can leave. If not… Giratina might have its next soul after all.”

And with that, Absol vanished, leaving with the same popping sound as it arrived with. Calum stood, staring at the spot that was until then occupied by the red and white panther. “All I have to do is make this world take me back,” he thought to himself. “But how do that exactly? Hmm… well, Absol said that this place is whatever I want it to be. So perhaps…”

Calum closed his eyes, willing something to happen. He was wishing with all of his heart that he could return, and that he could see his Eevee again. The white space around him erupted, startling Calum. He opened his eyes in a flash; just in time to watch the events unfold around him.

The walls were changing colour rapidly. A strange tie-dye rainbow was flooding the confines of the walls, which had taken a definite and solid form in the last twenty seconds. The ceiling changed completely, however – it became the sky outside. Or did it? Calum looked closer, and saw the ocean rippling on the ceiling!

“Woah…”

But the room wasn’t done yet – before long, a tall, black pillar erupted from the centre of the room. A spiral staircase constructed itself around the pillar. At the foot of the newly formed staircase lay a message carved in what appeared to be stone. Calum read it aloud, just to convince himself of what he was reading.

“This was your final resting place. Travel up the staircase and return to your world, and carry out whatever your heart desires.”

Calum shook his head in disbelief. “Now I know why people never visit this place twice,” he muttered. “It’s too freaking crazy!”

“Calum… don’t leave us… please…”

Gardevoir was still trying to resurrect Calum above the surface of the now calmer waters. His body was hanging limp over Milotic, who had somehow managed to stay conscious throughout the entire ordeal. She was crying bitterly, unable to think that her trainer wasn’t able to come through that attack alive. Eevee was still in his poké ball at this point, but that was hardly a good thing for the little dog.

Calum’s eyes snapped open in a flash. His lungs were finally given an order to work, and he quickly took a huge gulp of air as a result. Milotic felt the disturbance on her back and instantly looked round in disbelief. Gardevoir closed her eyes, tears of relief clearly visible.

“Calum… we… we thought…

“I know, I know,” he replied sombrely. “But there’s no time to waste on me – Ryan’s in trouble! Gardevoir, do you think you could teleport us the rest of the way to the island?”

“Of course… let’s go find Ryan!”

Gregor looked around the island, still perched on his elevated cliffside. He considered his options for attack, to retrieve the Void Balls from the other island inhabitants. On his right lay Ryan, still in shock about what happened at sea. Whilst he would be an easy target, Gregor wasn’t so sure. “That Dragonite is still around,” he thought to himself. “Ryan himself would be easy to break; but Dragonite? That thing is connected to the void itself… and taking her down would require more than even my strength.”

He looked to his left, where the three young trainers had not long passed. “I definitely saw a Void Ball in that kid’s hand… there’s three of them, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to silence them if I can take them on one at a time.” He smiled as the plan formulated in his head. “Well, there isn’t a second to lose. You kids better be prepared…” And with that, he took off down the cliff to give chase.

“Come on you two, hurry up!”

Ellen ran impatiently onwards along the rugged forest path, unwilling to wait for her slower friends to catch up. Her red blazer and jeans perfectly matched her fiery personality, and her lack of patience was clearly showing here. Even her blonde hair billowed hastily with the wind, as if it was also sick of waiting for her friends.

But before long, she had found herself at a crossroad. Unsure of where her quarry had ran of too, she let out an impatient tut and decided that it would be best to wait for her allies this time.

It was clear that the trio were moving through a wild track, way off the beaten map. The entire “path”, if you could call it that, was overgrown with shrubbery and littered with dead leaves. Tree roots frequently protruded out of the ground, strategically placed in the worst possible positions… as if they were determined to hinder progress along the track. The trees that owned them were extremely tall, and mostly deciduous in nature. They grew so wide that they overshadowed the path, giving the odd impression of twilight within the day. Two boys were catching up to Ellen. Her hazel eyes scanned them impatiently as they caught their breaths after a difficult run. One decided to speak out.

“Well, we aren’t the ones with the Rapidash Ellen, so of COURSE we will be slower! What do you expect!?”

The retort came from a tall boy in green, whose dark brown hair was as dishevelled as ever. Max was always known for his sarcasm, and frequently fought with Ellen as a result of her impatience. Today was no exception; however, Matt decided to intervene before things got out of hand.

“Quiet Max, this is serious.” His preference was for brown shorts and a blue hooded sweater. His sapphire eyes turned back to Ellen, who had waited long enough for them to catch up again. “Now, did you see which way that baby Eevee went?”

Ellen shook her head. “No, that’s why I wanted you two to get here faster. You’re so slow!” Max grunted, showing his disapproval. Ellen ignored him. “Well, we need to find it, it could be in real danger… Espeon, let’s go! We have one of your kin to find!”

With a flick of the wrist, the young female sent out an odd purple doglike creature with long, pointed ears and a forked tail. The ruby gem on her forehead glowed momentarily as she stood, facing her master.

“That Eevee child has to be around somewhere… can you find it?”

The purple creature’s eyes closed slowly. Her red gem shone brightly as she freely controlled her psychic abilities in order to assist her trainer. The wind billowed vigorously through the trees, as if trying to guide Espeon towards her intended target. This must have worked; before long, the forked tail was directed towards the trio’s left.

“There?” Ellen asked tentatively. A nod confirmed her assumption. “Alright, let’s go!”

The group started again, with Espeon taking the lead. Her four legs were clearly an advantage over this rough terrain, as she agilely leapt from root to root in pursuit of the young Eevee pup. After a brief minute along the path, Ellen had noticed a rustling in the bushes, followed by a flash of brown fur darting through the undergrowth.

“There!” she exclaimed, pointing to the spot. “The little Eevee just ran through those bushes! Come on, let’s go!”

“I’m afraid you won’t be going anywhere.”

Ellen gasped and turned round on the spot. Before her stood Gregor, smiling callously as he confronted the trio. Matt, sensing danger, took a step forward.

“Who are you?”

“I am Gregor, former head of Team Leafre.” He paused, looking for a reaction. “I have come for the Void Ball. If you hand it over nicely, nobody will have to get hurt… now, where is it?”

The trio looked at each other, confused. “Void Ball?” Max asked, dumbfounded. “Just what the heck is that? I’ve never heard of anything like it!”

Matt and Ellen looked at each other for a second. Neither knew anything of the ball that Gregor referred to, although Matt had a feeling that he had encountered something like it before…

“Look, there’s no time to play games. I know one of you has it, now hand it over before I take action!” Gregor reached into his emerald blazer and pulled out a pair of poké balls. Matt saw the quiet rage building in his eyes; he wasn’t going to play nice for much longer.

Max looked over at Ellen. Both of them had seen this change in expression, and neither liked it. “Looks like he means business,” Max said softly, with one hand reaching towards his belt. “What do you think, Ellen? Think we can take him?”

Ellen smiled. “Is that a challenge Max?” She turned round to address Matt. “Look, Matt, take Espeon and find that Eevee pup. It is still in danger, and we can take this guy no sweat, so go make sure he’s safe!”

Matt hesitated, unwilling to leave his friends when they could be in danger. His will faltered somewhat when he looked at the determination in Ellen’s eyes, however. With a quick nod, he turned to Espeon. “Let’s go Espeon!” The purple dog looked at Ellen. She nodded reassuringly, promising her that she will be fine in this battle without the aid of the psychic pokémon. This was all that was needed to persuade her to leave. Both Matt and Espeon ran off into the bushes, following the trail of the little Eevee they were chasing. Gregor made a move to stop them, but was quickly blocked off by the remaining two.

“Hmph, you fools…” he said, his temper rising. “He probably has the ball, knowing my luck. No matter, it won’t take long to destroy you two.” He revealed two dark green poké balls and flung them onto the battlefield. “This is what you get for interfering!”

“Calum… no… he can’t be gone…”

Ryan was kneeling on the cold beach sand, trying to take in just what had happened. He was determined not to believe what had happened at sea… determined to believe that his best friend was still alive. He wasn’t here beside him though… and there was no sign of him… could he really be gone?

Dragonite merely stood over Ryan, doing her best to console the distraught teenager. Not even she knew of the fate of Calum. In her mind she was in a similar position as Ryan; unwilling to believe he was gone, but unable to shake the very obvious facts that seemed to be present. She looked out to sea, as if attempting to find some final desperate sign that he was alive still. Finding nothing, she turned back to Ryan, tears welling up in her eyes. The young boy looked up to face his saviour.

“Oh, don’t cry, please!” he pleaded. “He IS alive, I’m SURE of it! He has to be…”

Ryan looked around. He could see the lush trees of the island forest behind him. It was a vast wilderness that seemed to stretch out for miles without an end, with all of it looking basically the same. In the undergrowth, something caught Ryan’s attention. Could it be…?

“Is that…? Eevee?”

Upon hearing its name, the tiny brown creature took one quick look up and saw the person who called it. Clearly not liking what it saw, it darted off into the undergrowth. Ryan got up instantly.

“Hey, wait!” He gave chase, calling back to Dragonite to thank her for her assistance. The sombre orange dragon merely looked into the ocean, still searching for signs of life.

Ryan’s initial assumptions about the forest all proved to be correct. He had never encountered a place that was so wild, so chaotic, and so arcane. There was no path for him to follow – he had resorted to sending Sandslash out to cut down any particularly nasty bushes, vines or shrubs that were in the way of his path through the trees. The little Eevee child was somewhat quicker than the teen, and had managed to build a fairly large lead. Ryan called out to it again.

“Hey, why are you running Eevee? I thought we were friends? Or… are you showing me where Calum is?”

Ryan clung onto this belief as he continued to chase the little dog through the forest. The path jerked distinctly upwards, up the side of a fairly large hill. Despite running more and more out of breath by the second, Ryan was determined not to give up, and continued the chase. The undergrowth began to thin out as he and Sandslash climbed, and before too long the pair had made it to a mysterious clearing. The Eevee child had managed to get away by this time, but Ryan had forgotten completely about it as he saw his surroundings.

“Woah… where is THIS?”

He had made it to what appeared to be a run-down temple. The ceiling was non-existent, and many of the pillars had crumbled a long time ago. The scene bore all the markings of a catastrophe. Ryan cautiously moved towards the ancient relic, looking for any signs to indicate just what the place was. He found only one – a worn tablet with a collection of odd symbols that resembled pokémon.

“Unowns…” Ryan muttered to himself, relieved to find that he understood what the tablet depicted. “It’s times like this that I thank my father for making me sit through that class… let’s see here.” He carefully translated the symbols.

“Herein lies the Void Gate. When the four chosen ones, guided by the sacred Void Balls, arrive with the Pendant, the Void will open.”

“Four sacred Void Balls…” he recited, trying to decipher what was meant He instinctively reached into his pocket and pulled out the brilliant blue poké ball that held his beloved Dratini. “Does it mean these? Calum has one as well… and I’m sure the man who saved me from those thugs had one too! But who WAS he…”

Ryan stepped inside the weathered temple. The inside room was gigantic; he presumed it would’ve looked fantastic when it was still intact. All that remained now were loose fragments of the walls and a large silver chest in the middle of the weathered stone floor. There was a small, delicate lock in the centre of the chest – as Ryan edged closer to it, he noticed that the shape of the lock was exactly like the shape of Eevee’s pendant.

“So this is where the pendant goes,” he whispered. “But where is Calum?”

“Hey! What have you done with that Eevee?!”

“Huh? What the-“

Ryan jumped to the side as a powerful bolt of lightning came his way. Looking frantically for the source of the attack, his eyes met an orange mouse pokémon, much like his own Raichu. Unlike his, this one’s tail was whole; Ryan quickly concluded that it was a male Raichu. “Not that that will help me,” he muttered. “Who are you, and why did you attack me?”

The owner of the Raichu stepped forwards, accompanied by a somewhat calmer Espeon. “My name is Matt,” he said boldly, trying to assert some authority over Ryan. “Tell me now, what have you done with the Eevee pup that ran through here?”

Ryan looked confused. “I don’t know what you’re talking about… I lost sight of an Eevee child before I came in here, but the last I saw of that little guy he was running in the direction you just came from!”

But Matt was having none of it. “Lies! I’d have seen it if it ran by me!” His Raichu gave a low growl, signalling his intentions quite clearly. “You WILL tell me the truth… or you will face the consequences!”

Ryan instinctively reached to his belt. “Oh yeah? We’ll see about that! Let’s do this!”

Calum appeared alongside Gardevoir and the worn out Milotic on a pebble beach. All that he could see for miles on either side was a glimmering array of stones; some crystalline, others mere trash. In front of him lay the same thick forest that Ryan traversed earlier, although the trees facing the young man were mostly evergreens.

Calum turned to his pokémon. “Thank you… both of you. Really, I would be dead in the water if it wasn’t for you two, literally!” His attention turned to Milotic. “You need a long rest!” He pulled out a Full Restore, sprayed Milotic all over with it (the slender sea-snake showed her affection as the marvellous healing spray took effect), and returned her to her poké ball, where she was to stay for quite some time. Calum grabbed two further poké balls from his waist as he put Milotic’s back, and sent out Skarmory (to dry off, much to the metal bird’s relief) and Eevee. Eevee looked round for a minute, taking in the surroundings.

“This is it, Eevee! Your home!”

The little dog made no response as it continued to gaze in awe at the forest in front of it. A quick rustling in the bushes brought him back to reality, however. His attention snapped to the site of the disturbance. A small brown bundle of fur was watching the group from what it deemed to be a safe distance. Curious to see what Eevee was looking at, Calum looked in the same direction, and spotted the little creature. Big mistake. The little doglike animal instantly spotted that Calum was also looking at it, and made a run for it. Calum, still unsure of the exact identity of the animal, turned to Eevee.

“Was that…?” he started. Eevee nodded; it was a family member. Calum wasted no time. “Alright, Arcanine, go! Let’s find that Eevee!”
Calum’s immaculate red dog came out, standing proudly by his trainer’s side. As he returned all of his other pokémon, the young man picked up Eevee (“there’s no way Eevee can keep up with Arcanine,” he thought), got on Arcanine’s back, and gave the order for the pooch to run as quick as he could to catch up with the young Eevee child.

“Something tells me that following this Eevee will lead me to something rather important… although I still don’t know where Ryan got to at all! Hang on…”

“Well well… I thought Calum was finished off by that storm for sure! Seems that he is tougher than I thought then…”

Jason stood on the beach where Calum had just left, having just come out from the undergrowth. He hadn’t seen what the boy was chasing, but he didn’t particularly care at this point. All he cared about was the fact that the Void Pendant was still in his possession, and that he was moving as expected.

“I guess I need to get going myself. My little tracking device here will lead me directly to Calum, and the rest when they meet up. Then I can claim what’s mine!”

He tossed a poisonous looking poké ball onto the beach. A flash of purple light revealed the form of a large green dinosaur-like creature with a vivid red flower blooming on its back. The flower was covered in vicious purple spots; clearly there had been a little redecoration by the trainer.

“Hmph, Venusaur, let us go! Time to retrieve our power!”

The beast roared in delight as Jason mounted it, positioning himself behind the gigantic flower. With a familiar rage flooding through its bloodshot eyes, it took off into the forest, with only one goal in its mind.

Evil Venusaur coming at ya!

Nice chapter, and I lol'd at some moments where I saw some speculations I made earlier :)

Well, can this stuff finallt unfold already?! :D for as far as I knew, we were about to know what the void contained two chapters ago, and I could barely wait back then! Let alone how I must feel now, hm...?!

I'm not sure if these are allowed to be revived, but if you need it unlocked, just throw me a PM, Cal.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision (Latest Chapter = 22)

It's been so long since I looked into this again that I didn't see it locked lol. It is allowed for someone to revive their own stories if they have a new chapter. I wouldn't have broken the rules myself you know ;D

BTW, I've started writing a little more of this now. I might be able to persist and finish it within a week or so, if anyone wants it :p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision (Latest Chapter = 22)

So after a few hours I seem to have caught up...

In my reading spree I did come across a few things, typos here and there and the way you seemed to drop the use of italics to indicate thought/telepathy for a couple of chapters, but nothing so major as to deter my immense interest in this incredible story. I would go on saying that this has inspired me to make an attempt at writing but I think it's also put me off a bit at the same time. I mean I guess I could write something, but with pieces of THIS quality around I feel my attempts would look a bit pathetic by comparison... ^^;

Either way, I look forward to the continuation/conclusion. :p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision (Latest Chapter = 22)

Really good story. I've read the whole thing. Keep it up.
