And Lewis sure seems confident and agressive... will Calum manage to beat him...?! Give us more! (as always!:p)

and of course, keep it up!;)

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Ohh the two cathces was interresting. Figures ud catch skarmory...
And i say KILL ALL THEIR POKES MWAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAH

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

WOW! Great chapter! I think giving sandslash to ryan was a pretty smart actually. I have not been able to work on my fan fic at all, I have part of the latest chapter done, but I have had some family issues as well as loads of school work. My thread has died as well so over spring break I hope to get everything moving again. Don't worry our little plan will unfold in time ;)

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

I know mine died a while ago, too, but I think that may be partly because I haven't been on for ages... atleast 2 months, I think. Actually maybe 1 and a 1/2. I still haven't gotten around to reading this, but it looks good from what I've heard.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Hmm hmm.. it's been a while since I've touched this. I guess things have really just gotten in my way entirely... job-hunting is proving fairly futile atm, so money is EXTREMELY tight. New games have come to me, which of course warrant a lot of playing. And uni starts on Monday... yeah, things are fairly bleak atm.

I'll try eventually to start writing this again, if anybody is interested... sorry it's been so long, but I've really not had much to do with this for a while.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Holy wow it's been a long time since I posted in this. What's this, almost 2 months? Geez.... much more than that since a chapter went up.

Well, I've had a lot to do, simply put. I've had tons of work for university to do, various flat-hunting missions (most of which have failed -_-), and a lot of worrying about my future... oh, and getting pretty big into the competitive scene more than ever. It's been a tough time since I last updated here... maybe more so than I've realised as it's all been happening.

And I'm still not out of it yet. I have exams in less than two weeks, and I still need to come up with flat arrangements for next September. So basically... I'm far from home and dry as it stands.

Why am I telling you this now? Because I decided to go back to this for a while anyhow, despite everything that's been going on. MK's fic, which has included my characters somewhat, has inspired me a little to do this again, and so do it I will. As much as I can that is - there's a lot of things against me writing this atm, and I'm still not sure how creative I can really be for it.

BTW, I've had backing from PMJ, Bacon and c-m to revive this; it's not a random revive that is being done to annoy the mods. I've expressly asked for permission to revive this because I have something to contribute to it again - that being a new chapter. SO... without any further ado, the long-awaited chapter 18 is finally upon us :D

Chapter 18 – Taking Revenge?

“Ugh.. what do I do..”

Calum stared at Rhydon, highly concerned with the situation he had found himself in. Most of his pokemon were far too weak to be able to battle; the only two that were immediately healthy couldn’t take on Lewis’s intimidating brute of a pokemon, either due to terrain or simply because they couldn’t hope to phase it.

“Just give up already Calum!” shouted Lewis, clearly loving the situation more and more as time went by. “You can’t hope to beat Rhydon in the mountains like this; it has far too great an advantage!”

Calum sighed. He didn’t believe that his opponent was right exactly… but he knew that it was be really tough to win from the position presented. However, it didn’t take long for an idea to form in his head…

“Gardevoir, go! Wish as soon as you come out; try to set up some healing power!”

The white human-like creature emerged from her pokeball and instantly began chanting softly to herself. Before Lewis had even begun to react, a soft glow could be seen in the sky, meaning that the move had been successful. Lewis didn’t even pay attention to this though; he was far more content with beating Gardevoir down than worrying about what she was doing.

“Rhydon, don’t just stand there! Megahorn her out of the mountains!”

Roaring in delight at the command, the gigantic grey behemoth charged at full speed towards Gardevoir, looking to ram his impressive horn right through her. Calum didn’t even have to say anything; Gardevoir knew to teleport out of the way and simply stall her opponent out until the Wish kicked in. After a minute of fruitless chasing, this was exactly what had happened. Feeling the relief of having fresh new energy within her, Gardevoir stood up tall and faced her opponent.

Lewis frowned, seeing the distinct improvement in his opponent’s condition. “Hmm, looks like we’ll have to do this a little faster than I thought we would… Rhydon, use Stone Edge!”

Being a mountain field, the rocks lying around were more than sharp enough to cause some serious damage. Rhydon picks up clusters of these and launched them at high-speed towards Gardevoir. She had again read her trainer’s directions however, and was quick to soften the blow with a sudden Reflect at the last second.

“Good going Gardevoir!” Calum shouted, trying to will his pokemon on. “Now, let’s show Rhydon what you can REALLY do! Energy Ball!”

Gardevoir closed her eyes and focused quietly on her surroundings. Before too long, a luminescent green bundle of light had manifested itself in front of her, appearing to draw power from everything around it. Seeing the attack too late, Lewis tried to tell his Rhydon to get out of the way, but nothing could be done to stop the inevitable. Gardevoir took aim and launched the now sphere of energy right at her opponent, who was powerless to evade it! It struck right in the centre of the gigantic bulk at full force; there was no way that Rhydon could handle such a strong hit on a heavy weakness… and after only 3 seconds of exposure, the colossal pokemon tumbled to the ground as if it had been hit by a hundred-ton weight!

Lewis screamed at his pokemon in agony. “Rhydon, no! How could you let her do that to you… now she’s almost at full strength AND one of my best pokemon is down! How can this be… this field suits me best – there’s no way you should be able to win!”

Calum smiled briefly. “Hmph, I’ve battled on tougher surfaces than this before… when you’ve played at the level I have, you know exactly how to battle on all terrains, and in all weathers!”

Darkness had begun to fall over the mountains in the heat of battle. Only when the intense fighting had stopped briefly did Calum notice this… he didn’t have long to think about that though. A scream of pain shot through the mountains like a rocket moments later! Something big was happening…

“Well, I guess that’s our cue to leave,” Lewis said bitterly, annoyed that he couldn’t stay to take Calum on for longer. “These mountains are dangerous at night… what has just become of your friend I wonder! Haha… boys, fall back! We’ll settle this another time…”

Lewis and his gang quickly disappeared into the dark mountain pathway behind them, allowing Calum to see what became of Ryan. However, Ryan was nowhere to be found! Speaking softly to Gardevoir, he gave one swift command: “find him…”

The white thought-reader began her delegated task immediately, not wanting to waste any time in making sure that her friend wasn’t hurt. She tried to find any familiar signs of Ryan’s familiar presence. It didn’t take long to locate this presence, but it was faint… what had happened exactly?

“He’s on the other side of these mountains… but I feel a lot of pain coming from him. We must hurry to him!”

“Right!” Calum said commandingly. “Eevee, go! Follow Gardevoir’s directions and find Ryan!”

Calum’s faithful chocolate dog came out of its ball with a bright flash. As soon as he came out, Gardevoir gave him directions to find Ryan. He instantly followed these, setting off through the hills to find his friend. Calum and Gardevoir quickly followed suit, hoping that Ryan was still ok.

In amongst all of this, Ryan lay on the ground in agony. Having to take on both Paul AND Steve was too much for the young boy, and he wasn’t able to keep up with their combined attacks. Having taken out his pokemon, the two had decided to have a shot at him also. They had managed to bury the defenceless boy under some fairly heavy rocks from a Rock Tomb attack, trapping him in place and causing him to cry out in pain. For what seemed like hours, he lay in his prison, unable to even breathe properly. That is until a stranger in a dark emerald blazer appeared…

“Looks like you’ve gotten yourself into quite the tight spot there…” he said in a low tone, almost as if he was in command of something unknown. “I’ll get you out… Flygon, go!”

The man sent out a tall green pokemon with wide wings and red sand-guards over its eyes. It appeared to be a cross pokemon – part bug, part dragon… yet with an ethereal glow about it as well. Its long scaly tail split into three segments at the end, with the same shape and thick red borderline as the wings. Two long dark green antennae curled gently behind the head of the impressive pokemon, who stood waiting for directions.

“Flygon, help this boy out from underneath these rocks would you? He’s in a lot of pain…”

Upon receiving the instruction, the dragon walked over to Ryan and began hefting the rocks up into the air, flying just high enough to lift its feet a metre off of the ground. Within five minutes, it had completed its delegated task, and was returned quickly by his trainer. Ryan was still motionless however, even when freed from the trap. Seeing this, the dark stranger sent out a strange white bird with triangular red and blue speckles dotted over its belly. She landed next to Ryan and spread her fluffy white down over him, causing him to stir slightly. Ryan sat up and saw the pokemon and her trainer in front of him, both concerned for his well-being.

“I’m glad you’re ok…” the stranger said. “You looked like you could’ve been finished there. Lucky for you that I got here in time to help you…” At this point, Eevee’s loud cry was heard in the distance; he was trying to find some sign of Ryan to report back to Calum! Hearing this, the stranger got up to leave. “Well, looks like your friend is on his way, so I’ll leave you for him to find…”

Ryan called back to the stranger, who had sent out his Flygon and was about to leave. “Wait! Who are you? And why did you help me back there?”

The man smiled. “Someday you’ll see… I’ll be seeing you again soon, don’t worry. But there was no way that I could let you die like that... you’re needed for something very important, and I had to make sure you stayed alive to carry out your task. Until next time…”

This time, the man left instantly, and nothing that Ryan said would stop him. Eevee had heard Ryan shouting to his saviour, and cried back to Calum to convey this. Within moments, Calum had found his friend sitting on the ground, wondering what on earth had just happened.

“Ryan, you’re ok!” he shouted, relieved to have finally found his friend safe. “What happened?”

Ryan looked up at the sky briefly, before replying to Calum. “I’m not sure… I was wiped out by those guys with Lewis, and I got attacked myself after my pokemon had been KO’d! They trapped me in a Rock Tomb, but this tall guy in an emerald blazer came and saved me… he was around your age, and he had a Flygon plus one other weird pokemon that I don’t know… the Flygon removed the rocks around me, and the other pokemon healed me somehow. I don’t know… it was all kind of blurry.

Calum held his head in thought to himself for a minute. “Hmm… an emerald top and a Flygon… could it be?”

Ryan looked at Calum, puzzled about his reaction. “What do you know this guy or something? I’d really like to thank him…”

Calum snapped back to reality momentarily, laughing slightly as he did so. “I might know him Ryan… but I’m sure we’ll be catching up with him again later on. If it’s who I think it is… let’s just say that he always manages to turn up when he’s needed for something.”

“Hmm… he told me that I was still needed for something very important, and that we would meet again soon. Strange, isn’t it?” Ryan sighed audibly. “Well, whoever he is, I’m sure that we’ll get to see him again soon. But right now we have to get to Palm City! It’s already dark out here!”

Almost as soon as this was said, a huge shadow flew over the pair. Something big was in the sky… and neither Ryan nor Calum wanted to find out what it was! The two of them began to race as fast as their tired bodies could take them through the rocky terrain, desperately trying to keep ahead of the enormous entity that was gliding behind them. This soon failed however, and before long the ominous being passed over the pair and descended down in front of them. Oddly enough, it came down without a huge crash, or even a sound at all… Calum and Ryan both stopped and watched tensely as whatever was once above them began to move in front of them.

Even though it was almost pitch-black, there was no mistaking the bright orange colour of the creature that stood before them. The creature was a humongous orange dragon with a wide yellow stripe reaching from the top of its neck all the way to the tip of its tail. Two comparatively small wings, both green on the front and orange on the back, flapped gently behind its thick arms, which ended in fairly blunt claws. A tiny pointed horn could be seen on its head, between two long and curly yellow antennae. Everything about this pokemon’s appearance exuded a powerful aura, both of raw strength and of the purest kindness.

“Wow…” Calum exclaimed softly, hardly able to believe what his eyes were showing him. “You’re… a Dragonite… why are you here? You belong in the sea…”

The Dragonite looked wisely at Calum, as if it was trying to convey some hidden message. Before long, it had crouched low to the ground, calling him and Ryan over with a soft, almost melodic cry.

Ryan gasped in awe. “It’s so beautiful…” he said, looking in amazement at the gentle giant that was in front of them. “I think it’s trying to get us onto its back Calum… maybe it will be able to take us away from here and into Palm City!”

Dragonite continued to emit the soft singing sound in response to this statement; it was clearly trying to say that Ryan was correct. Hearing the positive response, Ryan rushed over to Dragonite and got on its back without question. After thinking briefly about the situation, and seeing that there was really no other way of solving their troubles but to trust the dragon, Calum decided to follow his friend and climb aboard the people-carrier that had appeared before them. Once both passengers were secure, Dragonite took off into the air with an immense flap of its wings, almost causing Ryan to fall off in shock as it did so! However, luck was with the startled boy as he desperately clung onto the wide back of Dragonite as it flew just over the moonlit mountains.

The mountainous region was rather vast, spanning over several tens of square miles. They stretched as far as the eye could see, every one of them glowing differently under the radiant light of the moon above. The sky was free of clouds on this night, revealing the blanket of warm starts dotted on its canvas. Small streams could be seen trickling through the hills below, glimmering with the dull light bathing down on them. As the group flew over the mountains, a pack of Mightyena stood tall on the face of one of the mountains and howled in unison towards the sky.

“It’s so pretty at this time of night…” whispered Calum, looking down at the wonderful scenery below them. “So serene… makes you wonder what could go wrong in the world, don’t you think?”

“Maybe…” said Ryan, not quite following the conversation fully. “But right now, I’m too tired to think much about that; let’s just get to the pokemon centre so that we can rest up, yeah?”

“Fine, fine… you’re not one for deep thinking are you?”

But Ryan had already fallen asleep before Calum had even replied. The day had surely been a major ordeal for the young boy; he was still so naïve, not really knowing of the dangers that lay ahead. Calum could only hope that what was to come was enough for them both to handle…

A short while later, Dragonite had made it over the mountains and into the outskirts of Palm City. Calum sighed briefly. “You sure can tell once you’ve gone into a tourist city,” he whispered to himself and Dragonite. “All the lights, even during the blackest of nights… pretty disappointing sometimes, I must say.” Dragonite nodded and cried softly in agreement; it was clearly a little bitter at the extensive human habitation in the area. However, this was a place that was very familiar to it, and so it knew exactly where to go in order to get his passengers to where they needed to go. Before long, he had landed with a soft thud in behind the pokemon centre, causing Ryan to stir as he did so.

“Ung… where are we?” he asked drowsily, still not fully alert yet. “Did we make it to Palm City?”

Calum chuckled to himself, finding the sleepy reaction entertaining. “Yes, we did Ryan. Dragonite took us over the mountains and into the city, so that we can rest for the night.” He then turned to face the dragon, which had now gotten back onto its hind legs. “Thank you ever so much for you help… without you, I don’t know what we would have done. Is there anything we could do in return?”

Dragonite cried happily at the compliment, before opening its claw out to reveal something to Calum. It was a brilliant blue pokeball, encrusted with various colours and types of gemstone. It seemed rather old… not knowing what to make of it, Calum sent out Gardevoir to try and get some information about it. After a brief minute of conversation with Dragonite, she came up with a couple of answers.

“Ok, that ball is a pokeball linked to the Void of Power. Much like the black pokeball that Absol is in… it appears to have some mysterious connection that may help us out if we keep it. There’s also a pokemon inside this one; a Dratini that is the child of this Dragonite. If we ever need her, all we have to do is send Dratini out and have it call her… oh, and she also says that it has been a pleasure to have helped the one of destiny on his way. It appears that you are already very well known amongst the guardian pokemon of Foretta Calum… interesting.”

Ryan, who had also had this message sent to him, was the first to react to this. “Wow… so this Dragonite could help us in our quest? Great! The more help we have, the better, right?”

“Yeah,” agreed Calum. “So go ahead Ryan; take the pokeball that she is holding. You’re the only one with a party space left after all…”

“Really? You’re letting ME have that Dratini? Unreal… ok! I’ll take it!” Ryan walked over to Dragonite as calmly as he could and graciously accepted the pokeball with his new pokemon inside. He stood there for what seemed like an age, just staring at the ball from all conceivable angles. Calum snapped him back into reality though, and as Dragonite took off again into the night sky, the pair went into the pokemon centre to get healed up, ready for the next day’s challenge.

Meanwhile, standing inconspicuously on a nearby rooftop, the man in the emerald blazer from earlier stood, watching the two trainers head in for the night. In his hand was a vividly green pokeball, covered with similar jewels to the ball that Ryan was just presented with. “Soon, you two will learn the truth… and once you do, fate can take its course…”

So... hopefully I haven't disappointed anyone who still checks these things... I strongly urge that you take the time to read the rest of the fic if you have time, even if you have done so before. Like me, you guys will need refreshing on all of the big Q's...

However, a couple arise from his chapter as well. There are now 3 pokeballs which all seem to bear a connection to each other... and the void... thing is, what do they do exactly? And why does this stranger have one? Come to think of it, who IS the stranger anyhow? And why did he say that he would meet Ryan again soon?

Find out.. next time! :D

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

All right everyone I'm posting in here because this fic gets PMJ's Legendary Awesome Fic Seal of Approval. It's a good read and all you guys oughta be reading and posting reviews.

*coughminetoocough*

Anyway cal keep up the good work and I hope to see a Daisy in here someplace soon ;) I doubt you'll see one in mine but hey, any other fics I write might just have one.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Much obliged PMJ for the Seal of Approval :)

You probably will see a Daisy in here soon, depending on what I do. It's been so long since I wrote this that I'm really not sure of what type of character I was planning for the next leader... so maybe it'll be a Daisy, since that's as good a reason as needed to include one :D

It'll probably be a couple of weeks before I start properly writing the next chapter though, since I have one exam this week and three next week... all need some pretty hefty studying to clear. That is if I want to clear 2nd year of my degree of course... -_-

Any other comments? :D

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Glad i caused some inspiration here, and nice to see a new chapter. Which by the way, was great! Very refreshing, and really cool! Also that touch of mystery in the end is always appreciated, and keeps the reader wondering. Great idea for the story by the way, hopefully some new readers will come to this! Maybe the PMJ seal of approval wil help with that ;) Can't wait for more, as always.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Brilliant, just brilliant. Great job, gamercal. The description is phenominal. Lovely, as always :)

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Aww, thanks guys.. ^_^

I'll be attempting to do the next chapter when my exams are clear, a week on friday. That should give you guys enough time to think about what's next :D

Glad to see that people still want to know what this is about though :)

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

And because I can't bring my topic back from the depths without bringing my buddy cal's along for the ride, I'm saving this from the brink of disaster.

So how far along are you? Will we be learning more about young Calum and his buddy I-forget-his-name anytime soon?

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Don't worry PMJ, i'll have a good go at this soon... I have only just gone back home for the summer, and I'm in the middle of sorting out all of my various bits and pieces atm. I haven't had the time to startwriting this again yet... but I'm going to try and do some of that just now if I can hook my laptop up to an external monitor :p. My brother's one needs to stay where it is for wifi to work -_-

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

OK... I have a good reason for reviving this age-old thread... although it might be a good idea to read this from the beginning if you don't have photographic memory (and therefore can't remember everything that has gone on), you might want to refresh yourself before going on. That being said, here comes the next instalment... even if it's the last for a while. I've had a really hard time trying to not only find time to write, but also to come up with WHAT to write in the first place. As a result, although I finished this chapter a while back, I haven't been able to make any headway into the next one. Maybe I can do that soon though...

Chapter 19 – Confronting Yourself…

“So… why exactly are we here again?”

Ryan looked at Calum for answers, clearly clueless as to why they were even in this remote part of Foretta in the first place. The city itself was pretty enough; a small little sea city with wide stretches of pearl-white beach lining the exterior. Along this vast stretch of natural beauty, over a dozen tourist hotels and clubs could be seen, all competing openly to attract potential customers through their doors. Despite all of this, the place was extremely reserved; almost as if the city was gripped by fear of something. Calum and Ryan were walking down the main shopping street, attempting to find a map of the city. Calum’s Eevee and Ryan’s Sandslash were walking alongside them, trying to help with the search. Eevee’s pendant seemed to be drawing the attention of a lot of passers-by, many of whom turned their heads and simply stared in awe at its majesty.

Sighing once again, Calum turned to answer his friend’s question. “We’re here to get my fifth badge and head out to Pokémon Island, remember?” He paused momentarily. “Why is it always so hard for you to remember things… anyways, we should probably ask someone where the gym i-…”

Calum had to stop mid-sentence when his eyes caught sight of the building behind Ryan. “Is… well, that was lucky…”

The gym itself was a vibrant aquamarine dome, with various water tanks occupying the outer layer of the shape. Within each lay a rare water pokémon; most were sleeping, but some were looking at people walking past with interested or curious expressions. Turning round to see why Calum had stopped, Ryan noticed a Seadra in one of the tanks and ran up to it in excitement.

“Oh COOL, a Seadra! I always wanted to see on of these up close… it’s so beautiful! I wonder if the gym leader here will use it?”

The Seadra simply looked back, clearly nonplussed at the unwanted attention. It had seen this all before… and it was quite boring to it now. Once again shaking his head due to his easily excitable partner, Calum thought briefly before answering. “I don’t know… but maybe if you ask her nicely she will show you it afterwards!”

Ryan raised an eyebrow towards Calum. “Her? You haven’t even been here yet… how do you know the gym leader is female?”

“Let’s just say that I have a hunch… anyhow, how about we go in and find out”

Agreeing quickly to this in the hopes of seeing the Seadra inside, Ryan and Calum made their way into the spherical building. Much like the exterior, the inside of the building was coated with a mixture of coloured glass walls and aquatic homes for a variety of marine pokémon. From lively Goldeen and Finneon playing with each other, all the way through to the idle Lanturn and Quagsire sleeping at the bottom of their tanks, almost every water pokémon imaginable lined the wide corridors of the gym. Calum and Ryan found themselves going up a marble staircase at the end of the entrance corridor, leading out into stands that appeared to be for spectators. The “stage” in the centre consisted of a gigantic swimming pool, much larger than any of the tanks before, with sturdy rectangular platforms supported by pillars from below scattered just above the surface. Two tall girls in navy blue wetsuits stood on opposite sides of the tank, eying the water with caution. Calum looked on in awe as a gigantic red and yellow sea serpent leapt up at an astonishing pace from under the water, with what looked to be a pale blue and yellow crocodile clamped firmly in its huge maw! With a mighty roar, the giant beast hurled its hapless victim into the wall opposite Calum and Ryan, instantly knocking it out as it slid slowly and painfully back into the water. The girl on the left sighed as she brought out a pokeball to return the poor creature.

“Ahh, Croconaw! Looks like I’ve lost this one Daisy…” she said, looking towards the fierce red snake with fear etched all over her expression. “I only have one more pokémon left… and he’s not exactly suited for water-based fighting… I forfeit.”
Daisy looked at her opponent forlornly. “Come now Pam; you aren’t afraid of Gyarados here, are you? I know he LOOKS nasty, but… surely you can do SOMETHING here?” She smiled briefly, and pointed towards the stand where Calum and Ryan stood. “ I mean, we have a crowd now if you care to look… you don’t want to disappoint them now, do you?”

The two looked over to where Calum and Ryan stood. Pam stared at the two, unsure as to what to do next. She wasn’t planning on having spectators for her match… Daisy on the other hand was more than used to having people watching her live battles, and wasn’t bothered by it. When she took a proper look at who was in the stands though, her expression changed a little.

“Oh, well if it isn’t Calum! Long time no see cutie… hopefully you haven’t forgotten little old me in the short time we’ve been apart!” She paused briefly to take note of the young man’s first reaction. Calum gazed down at the battlefield and back at Daisy; he knew exactly who she was of course…

“Ha, how could I forget someone like you Daisy?” he said softly, reminiscing about the times before the tournament. “I swear, you were one of the only things keeping me going sometimes… ironic that you will once again play an important part in my life here too… but know that I am here for the badge first and foremost; no amount of memories will change that!”

Daisy looked a little hurt by the business-like demeanour cast by Calum, but she gradually got over it. “Well, yeah, I figured you’d be here for that… I’m glad to see that you’re OK though! A lot has been going on with you it seems… your tales are going across the region faster than you are! And now we meet again… only this time in battle… once I round up this one of course! Pam, shall we?”

Daisy’s opponent looked at the water, almost embarrassed to look at her as she spoke. “Well, I don’t have much left to fight on water… and I don’t exactly want to make a fool of myself in front of your boyfriend over there…”

Upon hearing that, Daisy suddenly grew extremely angry. “He is NOT my boyfriend! We’re good friends, but… we aren’t going out! And just what are you trying to imply with that anyhow? Am I not allowed to care for a guy who seems to be on a world-saving mission or something?”

Pam looked up in shock. “What? No, I never meant it like th-“

But Daisy stopped her cold. “Oh I know EXACTLY what you meant! And don’t you think for a second that you’re right!” She took a brief minute to calm herself down before speaking again in a quieter tone. “Anyways… are we going to finish this or what? I have another challenger waiting… don’t want to keep him waiting now.”

“Oh, so I’m ‘just another challenger’ now then?” Calum thought to himself, a little crestfallen at the solemn tone that Daisy was now using. “Well… guess that ends that for now… let’s just see if she’s kept her ability level going strong. She was in the semi-finals after all… and she seems to be on her home turf here, so this will be difficult for sure.”

Pam regrettably sent out her last pokémon, a small blue dog-like creature with a a long tail and long black ear-like hair protruding from either side of what looked like a black mask over his red eyes. Standing only on its black hind legs, the little dog took one look at the prospective opponent and fell to his knees in terror. Seeing the opponent’s overwhelming anxiety about facing Gyarados, Daisy called the match off at that and returned her giant red pokémon. Pam wasted no time in calling the little Riolu back to his safe pokeball, relieved to see that he didn’t have to get destroyed in the same way that Croconaw before him did. Tears welled up in her eyes when the result hit home though…

Daisy faced Pam once again to commiserate her for the loss. “Well, that was a disappointing finish to say the least… sorry for putting your tiny Riolu through that. Sometimes I forget just how scary something like Gyarados can appear to a pokémon of his size... I mean, Gyarados is over 20 feet long, so of course it’ll scare the living daylights out of something like him! But… come back and try again at some point, yeah?”

Drying her eyes momentarily, Pam slowly returned the gaze of the gym leader. Hiccuping slightly, she replied slowly to the question presented. “O-ok… you can be s-sure that I’m coming back once I’m s-stronger…but do you m-mind if I stay to watch Calum’s ch-challenge? It might h-help me a little…”

Daisy smiled. “Of course I don’t! If my man Calum has kept himself as sharp as I expect him to have done, this will be a match that you wouldn’t want to miss anyhow! Let’s get you out of here first though… open the doors!”

Once she had finished, doors on both sides of the central tank opened up, allowing Calum and Ryan into the arena to meet Pam and Daisy. A large, circular bridging platform rose from the bottom of the tank as the doors opened, allowing Daisy to cross over and welcome her next challengers.. After a quick hug to properly greet each other, Calum and Daisy stood facing each other, eyeing one another out as if they were trying to psych each other out. Daisy was the first to talk.

“Well, you know as well as I do that you can’t just challenge me without a little test… let’s see how you handle a little underwater puzzle! When you’re ready, walk over to the central platform and we’ll begin.”

Daisy walked back across the platform to her leader’s spot. Pam walked over to the open doors to leave the arena and take her position in the stands. Unsure of what was going on, Ryan followed her, leaving Calum alone to walk into in the centre circle. Daisy then pulled her Pokétch out of her wetsuit pocket, hit a few buttons, and waited for the system to kick in. Before Calum could ask what was going on, the links to the circle had been removed, and a glass dome surrounded the circle, before sinking into the water below! The platform was actually a huge elevator that sunk underneath even the stadium, revealing a large, gloomy underwater passage below. A dulled yellow light shone in front of him, revealing a playful blue and yellow angler fish crying happily outside of the dome. A speaker built into the platform came alive, giving the startled Calum a voice from above to get him started.

“Ha, the look on your face when this platform sealed up – priceless! Anyways… there’s some breathing apparatus down there with you, so put that on and I’ll remove the glass dome. The aim for you is to reach the end of my passage down here and “free” one of the Finneon that you saw coming up to meet me in the first place. It’s rather dark down there though… so one of my Lanturn shall be a light beacon for you. However, she will not help you swim at all! Use one of your own pokémon for that if you want, but don’t think Lanturn will help you! I know you weren’t the strongest of swimmers, but I have a suspicion that you have a helper here… so, get ready to start!”

Calum looked outside the dome with fear in his eyes. He had never liked swimming as it was, and so the thought of having to take a whole challenge underwater was almost unbearable. What Calum didn’t know from Daisy’s description of the challenge was that the Lanturn actually had a tiny camera attached to her antennae, meaning that the crowd above could see exactly what was going on down in the depths of the gym. Daisy knew what she was doing… if anybody got into trouble down here, she knew instantly, and could get her pokémon down to help. Calum wasn’t thinking of this at all however - he was content to silently curse at Daisy whilst preparing for what he saw as the most terrifying ordeal of his life so far. Sensing a fear that she hadn’t ever felt from her trainer, Gardevoir came out of her pokeball to comfort her trainer.

“I’ve never seen you like this before Calum… why do you hate the water like this?”

Calum sighed. “I don’t hate the water as such Gardevoir… but I’ve never been a very confident swimmer, and I could never do underwater swimming… so to be surrounded with the stuff like this is a little intimidating for sure.”

“Well, it’s only natural that everyone has something they are afraid of… but running away from your fears is never the answer.” Calum winced at this statement; forgetting that Gardevoir regularly read his mind for thoughts and directions, he forgot that she would know what he was thinking about asking. “I don’t want to allow you to forfeit this test even if it means forcing you to do something you dislike greatly. But know that you always have your allies nearby...”

“Well, there goes asking to be teleported out of here…” Calum thought to himself as Gardevoir returned to her pokéball. “She’s right though… I have my pokémon to help me through. One in particular…”

“Let’s go Milotic! We have a test to complete!”

As Calum had finished getting the underwater gear on, he sent out his trusted sea snake partner to help him through the trial ahead. She looked bemused by her surroundings as the glass dome was quickly removed from Calum’s platform. Water surged from all sides to fill the void of air, forcing Calum to cling onto Milotic to avoid being swept away. After the initial shock, the joyful little Lanturn cried happily as it got behind Calum and pushed him forwards a little to get going. Calum and Milotic obliged, swimming forwards into the gloomy passageway ahead of them in search for Finneon.

Despite the darkness around them, when the walls were illuminated by the yellow lamp of Lanturn they appeared to be rather beautifully decorated. Twinkling gems of various colours poked out at various intervals, creating intricate patterns that almost served to distract Calum from the task entirely. His attention wasn’t caught for long however, as it didn’t take long before the trio made it to a split in the path.

“Great, now where do I go?” Calum thought to himself. Lanturn looked both ways briefly, and then swam playfully round in circles, as if to give nothing away about the “correct” path. “But if I remember Daisy well enough… both paths are probably correct; they’ll just involve something different along the way. So… I guess it doesn’t matter just now.” He signalled for Milotic to head left, which she gracefully did. Seeing the decision, Lanturn turned round and followed the pair once again, audibly coming out of her little routine.

The chosen pathway was eventless for around one hundred metres. Calum was starting to get bored… but the second he had begun to switch off, something happened. At the end of the passage, a rusty old gate was closing! There seemed to be a turn behind where the gate was, but if they didn’t make it there in time… seeing this, Calum urged Milotic to hurry. She dutifully responded, leaving Lanturn trailing behind slightly. Unfortunately, the gate was closing faster than even Milotic could swim! When she saw this, her head turned towards Calum for instructions… and the quick-thinking teenager didn’t hesitate. Mouthing the words “Ice Beam” was enough. The elegant snake pokémon fired a potent chilling energy through the water and towards the gate. Creating a thin glacier as it shot through the water, the energy wave collided at full force with the sinking grating. It creaked and groaned loudly, before coming to a brief halt. Milotic wasted no time in making a dash for the exit – she was off before the gate had even fully stopped! Lanturn was already swimming towards it though; she was annoyed at being left behind, and was making sure that it wouldn’t happen again!

As the trio raced towards the gate, Calum heard the ice behind them crack and break. The Ice Beam itself was disintegrating! That couldn’t give them much more time… but they didn’t need much more. By the time the ice broke next to them, they were already at the gate, and safely made it through before it began to move again. As the creaky gate closed behind them, Calum and Milotic took a moment to regain their composure and see just where they were now… while Lanturn simply cried joyfully and swam in vertical circles.

“Just like Azumarill that one…” Calum thought to himself as he gauged the surroundings. “Now, let’s see… looks like the path goes left again… but then it’s vertical. Why would you have a vertical shaft-like thing? Honestly, sometimes that girl is impossible to understand…”

Not wanting to waste any more time, Calum got Milotic and Lanturn to swim up to the vertical passage. The walls here changed in composition as you went up the tunnel; they became glass as you moved higher up. Calum could also see pokémon above him; it looked like a pair of Seadra! “So it’s glass at the top… and if Seadra’s there… then this must be heading up to the tanks outside the entrance! Man, who knew Daisy was so intricate in her design? But enough of that… what’s that down below?”

Milotic took Calum down to the bottom of the shaft, where another grating blocked the way. This one looked really fragile though… and a soft cry came out from underneath it! After asking Lanturn to illuminate the source of the cry, Calum saw a small fish with two alternating shades of blue around its body and small red eyes poking back at him. It was the Finneon!

“So THAT’S where you are? Well, we need to get you out now… this grating looks like it could come away easily…” Calum let go of Milotic, causing her to turn around in surprise. He mouthed the command “Aqua Tail” to her, and after a second she understood why he let go. Swimming directly over the grating, she spun her long body around in circles, creating a large momentum in her fan-like tail! She then slammed the tail into the grating, causing it to unhinge at one end and snap open, allowing the Finneon to swim out unscathed. He swam straight over to Calum, full of joy, and snuggled up close in affection. After a brief hug, the tiny fish swam straight up the passage, passing the now curious Seadra on the way past. Returning to Milotic’s side, Calum followed him up, with Lanturn leading. The two Seadra looked interested in Calum; seeing that Lanturn was with him, they knew he wasn’t a threat at all. Once the trio passed the sea horse pokémon, the passageway curved into the building again. The little Finneon was waiting at the top, where the surface on the water could be seen! Calum heaved a huge sigh of relief. The ordeal was almost over!

Heading straight for the surface, Calum wasted no time in finding the nearest spot of dry land to emerge on. Recalling Milotic (who was grateful to get back to her peaceful pokéball) he stood up on the floor, panting heavily. Gardevoir once again let herself out to comfort her trainer.

“I knew you could do it Calum. You believed in yourself enough to make it through, and that will carry you onward no matter what. Now, we have a battle to win… shall we?”

Calum smiled. “Yes… let’s go get my fifth badge!”

On cue, a speaker on the wall came to life with Daisy’s bemused voice on the end. “Well, it looks like you cleared the challenge after all… I thought for a minute that you might not make it! Well, there’s an elevator at the end of this dry corridor – take that back down and enter the arena once again for you challenge!”

Cursing Daisy under his breath again for putting him through that ordeal and almost mocking him for it afterwards, Calum did as he was told, travelling down with the elevator and finding a one-way door at the bottom of it. This took him back outside the main arena, where he could go through the doors and into the challenger’s section.

“You definitely look good over there you know…” Daisy said softly, almost as if trying to put the battle off. She clearly wasn’t sure if she even wanted to PLAY Calum, but the quiet teenager was having none of it. Even though he was angry, he kept a controlled demeanour on as he addressed his opponent and friend.

“I’m sure I do… after all, having been put through the most terrifying ordeal of your life really does that to a guy, wouldn’t you say? Anyhow, I’m not here now for the small talk… you and I have a match to do! So let’s get this one underway! Absol, front and centre!”

The elegant white panther, Absol, came calmly out of his black pokéball, fixing his placid gaze on Daisy. Almost unnerved by the sleek enemy, “Ok Calum… this will be a 4 pokémon battle! Let’s go Mantine!”

Daisy threw her Net Ball out into the water, sending out a rather large indigo manta ray, with two long antennae and a kite-like appearance in general. She quickly dived under the water, looking to strike from below where she had the advantage.

“Mantine, don’t waste any time; use Confuse Ray!”

Calum was quick to counter. “Oh no you don’t! Absol, Taunt it! Stop it from using status shots!”

Mantine swam up towards the surface, looking to shine a sinister white ray into the red eyes of Absol. However, once she reached the surface, she came face to face with a flaunting Absol, doing everything he could to show off and annoy the manta ray. It worked as well; soon Mantine became so angered by Absol’s carefree attitude that she stopped using the move she was commanded to and fire a stream of bubbles towards the wily panther pokémon. However, he was more than ready for such a rash assault. Before the bubbles had even reached him, he had already created dozens of illusory copies of himself around the wide platform he was on, causing the bubbles to float harmlessly past him. Keen to keep the advantage, Calum decided to continue with the irritation tactic.

“Good work Absol! Now, taunt it even further! Swagger!”

Every copy of Absol stopped and simultaneously taunted Mantine. Seeing SUCH arrogance from the opponent was too much; the manta ray went into a blind rage that sent her charging towards Absol’s platform in an attempt to show him who the better of the two pokémon was. Unfortunately for her, she could only find an illusion of the disaster pokémon, and crashed right into the centre of the platform. Both Absol and Calum saw the chance to attack, and neither wasted any time.

“Now! Night Slash!”

Even as the command was being issued, Absol was already taking care of it. Claws lit by a black glow, he charged from all conceivable angles and slashed the beached ray right on the centre of her back! She cried loudly as the sudden pain jolted through her body. The momentum of the attack sent the kite pokémon careering off of the platform and back into the water, where she slowly recovered her composure. Clearly still very angered, she looked towards a panic-stricken Daisy for support.

“Gah, that Absol is tough…” the female commented, eyeing Calum with a mixture of apprehension and disgust. “But we can be faster! Mantine, Rain Dance! Show his Absol how fast you can REALLY go!”

Mantine dove in and out of the water with quick motions, rendering any hope of tracking her impossible as storm clouds brewed below the ceiling of the indoor stadium. Calum stood as calm as ever though; he already had a plan.

“Perfect! That Night Slash seemed to do a fair bit… how about we show Daisy here the mixed side of you game Absol? Thunder, now!”

Daisy looked shocked. “What!? Thunder? Mantine, look out!”

It was far too late for that though. Absol looked up to the sky and howled menacingly. A little worried by the darkness of the howl’s tone, Mantine stopped briefly to look at what the opponent was doing. Big mistake. Her storm clouds quickly turned from grey to jet-black, and before she could even move again, a gigantic thunderbolt split the sky and shot right down to strike her on the back! Already wounded from the Night Slash, the bolt managed to strike the same spot, causing absolute maximum damage. With a gigantic roar from the clouds, the bolt ceased, and the heavens truly opened up to send a torrent of water into the stadium! But not even this was enough to revive the heavily injured Mantine; she was long since unconscious, and lay floating motionless on top of the water.

Daisy looked stunned. “Woah… I didn’t think Absol could use an attack like THAT! I’m sorry Mantine, really!” She despondently recalled Mantine, fighting early signs of tears back as she brought her next Net Ball out from within her wetsuit. “Well, looks like things will have to be a little more serious then… Dewgong, take him down!”

Sending the ball into the water, a large snow-white sea lion with a large protruding horn emerged in amongst the heavy rain falling from above. His cold black eyes stared mercilessly through Absol, who merely remained as placid as ever in the face of such adversity.

“We might have to go all-out on this one Absol,” Calum remarked, looking anxiously at the cool, confident look of the opponent. “Start things off with Psycho Cut to try and bring it closer. If it comes in, Night Slash it; but if it stays out, Thunder before the clouds vanish!”

The large order was rather a lot to take in, but Absol knew what was expected of him. He closed his eyes to focus, causing his crescent moon-shaped horn to glow a deep purple. Seeing the imminent attack, Daisy acted quickly to avoid taking unnecessary damage.

“Dewgong, Dive! Then, come up and Aqua Jet!”

Her order came just in time; Absol unleashed the curved blades of energy directly at Dewgong, only to see them miss as the wily opponent dove down into the rising waters. Seeing Dewgong disappearing into the depths, Absol cried once again to the heavens, calling for another lightning storm to crash down. The target shot to the surface after roughly twenty seconds, using a large in-built momentum to propel himself right into the face of the shocked panther pokémon! The recoil sent Absol crashing into the water as his own attack was let loose; a second gigantic thunderbolt released itself from the heavens above and struck Dewgong right on the neck! The sea lion cried in pain as it made its way back into the water, much like Mantine did. However, he was far from being knocked out… although his movements were far more sluggish than before.

“Paralysed…” Daisy said, vexed once again by Absol. This time though, she managed to get a shot in against him; in fact, the white cat was still swimming back over towards the main platform. He couldn’t do much from there… could he? “Dewgong, that blasted kitty is a sitting duck in the water! Ice Shard, hurry!”

Despite being hardly able to move, Dewgong was easily able to fire an icy breath out in the air, flash-freezing large numbers of raindrops into pointed icicles, all falling over the path Absol was taking! It was too late for him to change course; the icy splinters fell almost graciously through the air and penetrated the soggy fur on the back of the swimming feline. This triggered various nervous responses, causing the stricken pokémon to stop abruptly in the water. Quickly seeing that his partner couldn’t move, Calum called him back before anything irreversible happened. Up above, the clouds were thinning slightly… seeing this, Daisy decided to bring her trump card out into play.

“Dewgong, the clouds are thinning out! Quickly, Rest up before they disappear totally!”

Hearing the command, the ailing water pokémon gladly fell asleep on top of the water. However, within five seconds of falling asleep, he had already woken up! As if new life had been breathed into him, he swam freely and quickly around the central platform as the clouds died down, showing off his rejuvenated condition.

“Ugh, I forgot about Dewgong’s Hydration effect…” Calum said, silently cursing Daisy once again for effectively pulling the game back level without cost to herself. “She’s good… now who do I use?”

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Bravo! Very gripping, in fact I had forgotten what it felt like to be so mezmorized then seeing the end of the page and become all dissapointed =] That means you did a great job, very creative and can't wait for the next one, the sooner they get surf the better ;)

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Yeah, that one had a bit more... personal feeling to it. After all, the character IS meant to loosely portray myself, having shared my name and all... although I CAN swim, I really dislike doing so, cause I never got much good at it -_-. I don't fear the water at all, but equally, I've never done much underwater swimming, so you could imagine that it'd be pretty scary for a while.

I might try and write this again soon, cause it wouldn't be a bad thing to do necessarily...

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Glad you started writing again....hopefully I'll follow suit =]

EPIC chpater, both in contents and size, it was well worth the wait! ^^

The ide aof having to ''save'' a Pokémon wa snew for me inside a gym, but funny to read though! :p

The pattle is still going on full of epic-ness, and poor Absol...!:( That dewgong must be one tough opponent, but I'm sure Calum can beat it up! >=P

Can't wait for 20, and keep it up! ;)

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Alright, since I'm super-cool and have the permission of like all the mods to do this anyhow, I'm gonna revive this thread after like 2 months hiatus. Why? Cause I have new content obviously!

Now, I don't expect anyone to remember ANYTHING about this, and don't expect too many updates for a while either; this is purely cause I was both bored and had a chapter half-done. It's also the end of a battle, which means the real hard part comes next. Don't expect this out for a fair while - I really have to think about it, and I just don't have time yet with courseworks and my exams coming up. With that said, the next instalment is coming... right now!

Chapter 20 – Ocean’s Calling

“What’s the matter Calum? Afraid of Dewgong over here?”

Cool as you like, Daisy simply gazed over towards Calum, gauging his reaction to her taunts. Not one to be angered by such petty things, Calum looked back, defiance all over his expression.

“Ha, scared of that thing? Hardly… a good pokémon is worth challenging! Now, take on Gardevoir!”

Throwing his next poké ball onto the field, Calum’s green and white embrace pokémon, Gardevoir, came out onto the central platform. She looked over at Dewgong, gauging the situation as Calum steadied himself for the tough test to come.

“Gardevoir… start this off! Hypnosis!”

Gardevoir fixed her gaze firmly onto Dewgong, eyes aglow. The soft amber glaze quickly entranced the sea lion, which dozed off on the surface of the water before long. Lying on its side without a care in the world… it was a peaceful sight to behold. Things weren’t going to stay that way, however…

“Come on Dewgong, wake up! We can’t let this guy have such an advantage like this… you have to DO something!”

Calum chuckled at Daisy’s outburst. “Sorry Daisy, but it’ll be sleeping for a fair while… but it won’t be sleeping peacefully! Gardevoir, Nightmare!”

In a flash, the amber glow in Gardevoir’s eyes switched to a menacing dark purple, as the Embrace pokémon began to further harass poor Dewgong. Sure enough, after around fifteen seconds Daisy’s Dewgong was writhing on top of the water, splashing around and creating a lot of small waves. He was clearly suffering a lot… but the suffering wasn’t going to end there. Knowing what was going to be asked of her as always, Gardevoir changed her focus and began to gather up ambient energy in the atmosphere around her. With Dewgong still in pain, she directed a vicious electrical charge at him, causing a knee-jerk reaction in the sea lion that sent him tumbling underwater.

After about a minute, the white Dewgong shot up to the surface, still a little dozy, but clearly extremely annoyed at the same time. And it wasn’t just Dewgong that was annoyed – Daisy was also clearly infuriated by the spell of good play on Calum’s part.

“Ugh, it’s SO annoying when there’s nothing you can do about stupid sleep here… at least we didn’t have that problem before! Oh well, have to make the most of things I guess… Dewgong, Ice Beam!”

“Stay sharp Gardevoir! Go for a Light Screen!”

Still irate from being exposed to Nightmare, Dewgong rapidly gathered chilling energy from within its body to fire in Gardevoir’s direction. In anticipation, the embrace pokémon created a shimmering, luminescent wall of light, tinted with a dark purple shade. Without any delay, Dewgong launched a chilling wave of energy so potent; it caused water in the air to freeze in a trail behind it as it shot through the air! The now frozen air tumbled graciously into the pool below… but the beam itself collided head-on with the dark barrier in front of Gardevoir! However, as strong as the Ice Beam was, it still couldn’t break the screen of energy in front of Calum’s pokémon. What it did instead was even more shocking though… as time progressed, the impact point on the light screen gradually turned whiter and whiter… before long, ice was forming on the surface of the barricade! By this time, the barrier had extended itself to completely surround Gardevoir. Both her and her trainer looked on in shock, however, as the ice both spread and thickened… eventually encasing the entire Light Screen with an extremely solid crystalline shell of ice! Even when the purple light faded seconds later, the ice stubbornly remained, trapping a stunned Gardevoir within a chilling prison.

“Woah… what just happened? I’ve never seen anything like that happen before… wow. That Dewgong is intense…”

Daisy picked up on Calum’s awe, and chuckled to herself. “Yeah, you better believe that Dewgong is awesome! Now, if we’re going to break that ice, we’re going to have to hit it really hard Dewgong! Give it your all! Giga Impact!”

Dewgong took a brief pause to collect himself for the charge of the match so far… and rocketed over towards the ice-borne stalagmite at a tremendous pace! This was no ordinary charge… this was an all-out assault that was nothing like any that Calum had seen previously! He could only hope that Gardevoir would be ok as the mighty sea lion smashed headlong into the pillar, causing it to shatter in a thunderous roar that lasted well over a minute. The falling ice made it impossible to see just what had gone on; all that could be seen was Dewgong’s panting silhouette on Calum’s side of the arena. Exhaustion prevented him from returning to the water. But, even as the ice began to settle, there was no trace of Gardevoir…

“Gardevoir… what HAPPENED in there exactly?”

A despondent Calum scanned the battlefield in search of his beloved partner, but to no avail. However, moments later…

“Take this…”

Gardevoir appeared directly in front of the immobile Dewgong and fired a series of rapid electrical pulses straight into him from point-blank range. Having no way to avoid them, and being so exhausted from the colossal effort of the previous attack, Dewgong could do nothing but cry in pain as he was quickly knock unconscious by the final assault. Seeing her opponent down for the count, Gardevoir fell to her knees, almost completely out of energy herself. Daisy gasped in utter disbelief.

“Wait… rewind a second… that Gardevoir was FROZEN! How did it not only survive my attack, but also land such a savage blow so soon afterwards! I just don’t understand that at all…”

After a quick check with his worn out partner, Calum turned his attention to Daisy. “Well… according to Gardevoir, she managed to Teleport just as the ice was being broken… so she got away from the full brunt of the attack. Once out of the way, she came back into the fray once the dust settled to finish Dewgong once and for all. I never expected that thing to be SO tough… and you still have two pokémon as well… this could be extremely difficult!”

Gardevoir looked round in Calum’s direction, still almost completely devoid of energy. Both of them knew that they couldn’t take much more before the embrace pokémon would have to be recalled. Unfortunately, Daisy saw this fact just as clearly… and wasted no time aiming to capitalize on the situation to look for the upper hand.

“Ok, so maybe you just got a little lucky at the end of that last one… but you won’t be so lucky this time! Wailord, go!”

Only when he heard those words did Calum really take a proper look at the arena, and realised just how enormous it actually was! And it had to be as well, for the pokémon that Daisy sent out was surely the most gigantic of them all… a colossal blue and grey whale spanning over forty-five feet in length appeared out of the four-inch Net Ball thrown by the gym leader. The bottom half of the whale’s gargantuan body was a murky grey colour, marked with thin grooves that gave a streamlined appearance. The upper half, including the flippers and tail, was a brilliant blue colour, save for four grey spots that decreased in size going towards the tail. A strange red and grey garment was tied around the tail… this quickly caught Calum’s attention.

“Ready for this Calum?” asked a gleeful Daisy, clearly hiding something in this battle. “Wailord, Waterfall!”

Calum looked a little puzzled by the object tied around Wailord. “What the… is that… Gardevoir, when it attacks, use Protect!”

Wailord began a moderately slow charge towards the ailing Gardevoir, who was still kneeling down on the middle platform. However, she still had the energy to fulfil Calum’s command; casting a blue aura around herself, she managed to ward off the goliath of a whale as he attempted to make an impact with his water-infused tackle. Faced with such a powerful, unmoveable barrier, the whale pokémon recoiled back into the water, before making another charge. Soon enough, the blue light began to fade… and, after five consecutive Waterfalls, Gardevoir was left entirely open!

“It IS what I thought it was… Gardevoir… I’m sorry to have to ask this, but... you’ve been great. Please, you know what to do.”

“I understand…”

Fighting tears back as he issued Gardevoir’s final command, Calum closed his eyes and turned away from the battle scene until he knew it was over. Gardevoir, now barely strong enough to remain upright, closed her eyes and waited for Wailord’s attack. Soon enough, Daisy had issued the command, and Wailord began one final charge headlong into the defenceless Gardevoir. The connection was swift and brutal; without a wasted second, Gardevoir was down and out. But… as she fell to the ground for the last time, a jet-black shadow of her remained in the position she once stood in! Having already crossed over to the other side of the pool, Wailord turned round and found the shadow standing ominously on the platform where his opponent once stood. Thinking that it was the real Gardevoir pulling wool over his eyes, he made another rash attack, colliding at full force with the shadow… and passing right through! But, the shadow was now nowhere to be seen… for a few seconds at least. Before long, a black aura began creeping over Wailord from the tail up! Feeling the creeping presence overtaking him, the whale pokémon began thrashing frantically, as if trying to shake the shadow off of him. Everyone in the arena gasped in shock as the shadow crept further and further towards Wailord’s face, before finally covering him entirely. Silently constricting the giant whale, the last few seconds of struggling saw him desperately clinging onto his consciousness… then, fatigued and unable to breathe, he succumbed to the shadow’s grasp, and lay knock out in the water. Daisy was once again in disbelief.

“You had better explain yourself REAL quick Calum… just what the hell was that THING there? It almost looked as if Wailord was dying there…”

As both players recalled their pokémon, Calum took a moment to gather his thoughts before explaining. “That… was Destiny Bond. I REALLY didn’t want Gardevoir to faint, but… seeing her condition, and the Choice Band you had on that thing, I didn’t have any choice. Her final act was to bring Wailord down with her… I’m just sorry it had to look so HORRIFIC there.”

“But I’m still not letting up; as long as you have a pokémon left, I know you can win. So… I’ll let this little guy handle THIS match! Eevee, go!”

Calum’s chocolate dog with the pendant emerged onto the waterlogged centre platform. Having his paws wet as soon as he came out certainty didn’t please the creature. He turned his head in disgust, surveying the rest of his surroundings in the process. Daisy giggled at the little dog’s reaction to the battlefield.

Heh, looks like your little Eevee disliked the water Calum! Well, it’s going to truly hate this beast then… Gyarados, take him down! You’re my last hope here…”

Daisy’s final Net Ball was flung into the arena, and just like in the previous match the intimidating blue seas serpent came roaring into the arena, striking fear into all who looked at it. Especially Eevee. Quivering slightly at the prospect of trying to take such a goliath on, the tiny dog stared anxiously at his trainer for any form of reassurance he could give. Calum wasn’t even that sure himself though…

“Wow… I didn’t expect this thing to come out for some reason… sorry Eevee, I didn’t mean for you to get caught up against THIS thing… however, that doesn’t mean you can’t do SOMETHING to it! Shadow Ball, go!”

Doing all that he could to stay focused on the task at hand, Eevee, tentatively closed his eyes, channelling his thoughts into the Void Pendant. The pendant responded with a crackling sound, followed quickly by a pulsation of black energy. Seeing this, Daisy knew she had to act fast.

“Oh no you don’t! Gyarados, disrupt it with Dragon Rage!”

Seeing the state of his opposition, the huge monstrosity roared once again, casting a jet stream of orange-blue flames in the direction of the focused Eevee. The flames connected with somewhat precise accuracy; however, they were short-lived, and didn’t stop the melancholy ritual that the chocolate dog seemed to be performing. As soon as the flames died down, the pendant sparked once again, now positively shaking with the power it was generating. A brilliant black ball of pure darkness began to form in front of the pendant, transparent like the last use. Finally, Eevee opened his eyes – now the same shade as the Shadow Ball – and shot it over the stadium towards Gyarados.

The energy took less than a second to collide; way faster than anyone (except Calum) expected. Once again the mighty dragon roared, but this time it was in anguish! The serpent fell backwards into the water, looking almost totally drained by the intensity of the attack. Eevee himself, now out of the trance-like state, also collapsed in a heap on the floor.

“Seems like Shadow Ball took its toll on both of us there…” Calum said softly, looking closely at the situation. Eevee began to stir again, slowly but surely regaining his composure enough to groggily stand on his feet. He looked around the stadium for signs of his opponent; when he couldn’t find any, he looked curiously at Calum, wondering what was going on.

Daisy smiled. “That was a good attack Calum… such a lot of spirit for a small creature. But it ends here for him. Gyarados, now! Hyper Beam!”

Calum looked on in shock. “Wait, what!? Eevee, look out!”

The warning came FAR too late though. Deep underneath the surface of the water, Gyarados had been recovering its strength, and had amassed enough energy to generate an orange sphere of raw power in his jaw! With an almighty splash, he came rising out from under the surface, wasting no time in firing the energy in a cylindrical beam straight at the awestruck brown dog in front of him. The wave was so large that it covered the entire platform that Eevee stood cowering on… there was nowhere to run to avoid the onslaught! In an instant, the energy crashed into Eevee, crushing any hopes he had of winning the match-up in a fraction of a second. After four seconds of pure energy coursing through the poor dog’s body, the attack ceased, and Eevee simply lay unconscious on what was left of the platform he once stood on. Seeing the very foundations of the platform beginning to break apart, Calum instinctively called Eevee back without hesitation; in his state, there was no way he would be able to swim if the platform collapsed!

Daisy looked a little surprised. “Wow, did that attack REALLY just break my platform? Man. Gyarados, you didn’t have to go THAT far!” She started angrily at the giant blue dragon in front of her, who merely glared back, breathing heavily as he did so. Seeing that he was still recovering from his last attack, Calum aimed to end this quickly.

“Doesn’t matter to me Daisy; my last pokémon takes to the water more readily anyhow! Milotic, he’s all yours!”

Throwing his last poke ball onto the field, Calum sent out his own sea serpent pokémon; the beautiful Milotic. Heading straight under the water, she awaited instructions whilst her opponent was still out of breath.

“Milotic, he’s recovering from a Hyper Beam! Waste no time, go for a Blizzard!”

Milotic came up from below the surface, with a bluish-white glow around her antennae. She opened her mouth, and summoned a harsh polar gale that howled across the stadium, right into Gyarados! The enormous beast once again roared in pain as the freezing attack struck. The storm was so harsh that minute ice crystals began to form on the surface of the water… and ten seconds into the storm, they began to creep up the body of Gyarados as well!

Daisy gasped. “No way… Gyarados, you can’t freeze! Break out of there, now!”

But it was no use. As good a struggle as he could put up, Gyarados was powerless to prevent the inevitable happening. The ice crystals became larger and larger as the attack waned, fully encompassing the colossal body of Gyarados and prohibiting his movement altogether. He simply lay in the water like an extremely disjointed iceberg, with no hope of breaking free. Milotic simply stared placidly at the work of her attack; this was exactly what she wanted to happen. Almost instinctively knowing what was coming next…

“OK, enough toying around. Milotic, finish this; Hidden Power!”

… she closed her eyes, focusing on gathering all of her innermost energy for one all-out assault. Unable to even turn his head to see what his opponent was doing, Gyarados simply closed his eyes as well, waiting for the inevitable knockout blow to happen. And he didn’t have to wait long. After one short minute, Milotic let out a cry and unleashed a wave of pale yellow sparks in all directions from the centre of her body. The sparks crackled intensely, almost like an electric current flying through the air. They smashed into the frozen Gyarados, breaking through the ice with devastating consequences. He writhed and flailed around in the water out of sheer agony, sparks running all over his still icy body. The ice provided a path for the sparks to travel across; this only made it worse for Gyarados, since the sparks travelled much faster on the solid ice. The shock became so intense that the dragon could no longer support his own weight above the water. He splashed down into the aquatic arena, truly out for the count this time. Daisy sighed, recalling her last pokémon, and conceding defeat once and for all. Exiting the arena, Calum, Daisy, Ryan and Pam all gathered outside the entrance.

“Ok, ok, you won already…” she said quietly, almost unwilling to acknowledge the fact that Gyarados could lose like that. “Can’t say luck did me any favours, but… a loss is a loss. Here, the Palm Badge is yours.”

Daisy held her hand out her hand to Calum, presenting her elusive tree badge that finally granted him access to the open waters. Calum gratefully took the gift.

“Thanks Daisy… really. That match was intense! Seriously, I didn’t think I would win that after going through so much.”

Daisy smiled. “Well, it was a worthwhile game, for sure. But, you won in the end, as expected. Anyhow… you’ll need this if you’re going to go across the water. It’s VERY special, so take extra care of it!” Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a luminous blue disc with a distinct white label-like mark on the top. Calum took the disc, recognizing instantly what it was.

“That’s Surf, isn’t it? Wow… are you sure it’s ok to give me this?”

“Of course it is silly,” said Daisy, bemused at Calum’s reaction. “If it wasn’t, you wouldn’t be getting it! Just be careful out there… things are going to get even harder for you from here on out, and I want you to PROMISE that you’ll return safely. No ifs or buts – you ARE coming back.”

Calum blushed slightly, unsure as to how to respond to this. “Uhh… yeah… sure…”

Daisy frowned. “Maybe you aren’t hearing me right. You, ARE, returning safely.”

Seeing her expression, Calum hastily tried to recover his composure. “Ok, you got a deal. I’ll come back in one piece, for sure!”

Ryan yawned audibly. “If you two are quite done… we have an island to explore! Let’s move it people!”

Pam laughed. “Yeah, I need to get going as well. Thanks for the great spectacle you two… maybe I’ll get to battle you someday Calum.”

And so it begins… the journey to Pokémon Island. Maybe the truth will finally be revealed there… just what purpose does the pendant serve in this world? What lies beyond the void? Is there really anything in there, or is it just empty space? Will mankind’s lust for power corrupt the world once again? Perhaps we can finally find out the truth…

Give that one some thought whilst I go to bed :p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Cal, you are amazing. Got to love this story line, huh? Well, I'm going to wait for more info on the pendant, before I make my story.
