Still in high spirits after the victory against Elesa, the team and I continued towards Route 5. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, Cheren appeared.
"Hay Black! We both have the Bolt Badge, so let's battle!"
"Oh, fine." For me, it was a flawless victory. For Cheren, it was another addition to his streak of defeats.
"Oh, what a bother this is. I shall have to train more."
"Heeey, you two! I'm Alder, the Unova Champion!"
"Umm, mister champion," I said, "I think your hair's on fire."
"I know, right? Took me yeeeaars to get it this way. Anyway, go battle those two little kids because I said so!"
"Little kids? This'll be easy, Black."
I frowned for a moment.
"If you've had the experience with kids that I've had, you would know that that isn't always the case. Let's get this over with. Go, Leif!"
That was how the battle began. The little kids sent out a Herdier each, Cheren sent out his Servine.
It all went smoothly. Servine and Leif's combined efforts were able to take down one Herdier with ease, and the other was halfway to defeat. That was when things changed from good to bad, then from bad to worse.
"Herdier!" the little girl called, "Use Take Down!"
The dog charged at Leif. My Leavanny was unable to react in time, and got hit. The Herdier knocked into him at a precise angle, at a precise moment, at a precise speed, literally tearing Leif's fragile bug body in two.
The upper part hit the ground with a soft thud.
What happened from then was a cacophony of voices and sounds. The only ones I could make out were Cheren saying, "Woah! What the-!", the little girl yelling, "Yaaay! I won!", and Gaius saying, "You... You'll pay for that!" In fact, it seemed like I was the only one present who didn't say anything. Not out of shock, but out of pain. My head felt like it was being simultaneously torn apart, shattered, and smashed. I couldn't even scream. The last thing I saw before I blacked out was Gaius throwing the Herdier against the pavement.
I wasn't entirely unconscious. I was seeing things. My subconscious seemed to be telling me a story. It was the story of a young boy, just like me, leaving home with nothing but a Snivy, some eggs, and some money. He had good times, he had hard times. Just like me, some of his Pokemon died in battle. But eventually, he saved the world and went on to become Champion. But then, in some sort of a freak accident, he disappeared without a trace. That boy's name was Locke. The story seemed all too real.
Then, I realized something.
That boy was me.
What had happened? All I remembered was that I became Champion, I was sucked into some sort of vortex, and then I was chosen by Juniper to investigate the rifts.
I came to another realization. There had to be some sort of a connection between the rift that brought me here and the rifts that I was investigating. More research was needed.
Questions floated around in my mind like sea foam. Why was I in the past? Why had my memory been erased? Why am I only remembering this now? Why...
"-ck, wa-- up!"
Somebody was calling out to me.
"Wake up, Black!"
It was Inigo.
Suddenly, I did wake up. I was in exactly the position I had fallen down in before. It had only been a few minutes. Inigo and Cheren were standing over me.
"Are you okay? You gave us a real scare there. Your Leavanny..."
"..yeah, I know."
"I'm so sorry, Black."
Black? My name was... no, I can't tell anybody yet. 'Black' will have to do for now.
"...Where's the body? We need to bury.."
"Don't worry, Black." Inigo said, "Yarne and Gaius are already working on that."
"..Good. Let's go back to the Pokemon center."
