My opinion is: If you have to explain what an artwork is all about, you failed. Art is about expressing yourself, if you have to add how you feel in an extra paragraph, it means you failed to make others see your expressions.
Sure, a bit of extra info is nice, but if a judge like me can get it totally wrong like that, it means it didn't work out.
Just my 2 eurocents.

(I feel n00bish, now, for making the suggestion. lol) To be completely honest, the banner in my sig and the two entries I have entered in this contest are my only banner works, so basically, I'm still learning and am also WAY behind many other competitors in this competition in terms of experience and style.

You know, I strongly disagree here. This is a contest of Pokebeach's best artists.....and If I were an artist in the competition, I'd explain myself just as much, if not more than that. Believe it or not, it makes a difference. The whole judging process really requires looking into the artists mind and seeing what they were feeling or trying to express in their art. I think explaining it to us makes it alot easier, and its not N00Bish at all. Saves the judges a thought process and gains Wes a couple extra points that could be key. I agree with your point that the art should speak for itself, but this IS A COMPETITION.....and HS-A judge can most definately get it wrong.....its happened already. The point is to stop that from happening....do WHATEVER you can to win.....except cheat. Cheating is wrong. But Wes, I applaud your efforts in Project Custom.....more than anyone I've seen so far.

Thanks for the compliment, BR. But yeah I agree with both you and HS. Since this is a competition, the whole thought process is something the judge really needs to look at when judging one's work. Outside of competition is not much different, though, on the other hand. Everyone looks at things differently, so there are things that many could see while others don't, and vise-versa. I've also both heard and seen many cases where an artist gave something too much though. As a result, their piece suffered from too much detail. Too much can make viewers say, "Duh!" while too little makes viewers say, "Huh?" I think it really depends on your audience in terms of ways to express your art. Descriptions in contests like this help everyone to stay on the same page, rather than guessing about how the judges look at something.

I'm glad you got immunity too, because I know you're capable of more than that. I must admit I'm a little dissapointed though that you're taking advantage of your immunity this much.

I really didn't want to do it like this, I went on vacation for a long weekend and couldn't use my vacation round since I will need it later when I go to england. But I litterally had no time to work on it, in fact my parents didn't let me bring my laptop, I just had part of yesterday when I got back and I planned to work on it more today, but my carpool picked up much later then normal! So I am not pleased either I will not dissapoint again.

Effect: 9/10 Tons of animation....good stuff.
Color Usage: 7.5/10 Tons of color....but just because of the pokemon and text which I didnt like.
Effort: 8/10 I can see the effort with the animation...besides that, I dont see much.
Originality: 8/10 Nice job here....very original with the "adding" of pokemon....too bad they were SO OU Images....dont use Arkais. Thats bad.
Relation to the Challenge/Slogan 8/10 I saw the "Project Custom" but I didnt really LOVE the slogan.

So theres my scores.....now its time for the winner of this challenge. I really took some time to look at all the banners.....but when I looked, I could only choose one banner. The biggest part that goes into this is what the contestants put forth.....and by far, Wes has put in the most effort and has taking this as a good learning experence....and it really payed off. I loved his banner, and espically the text and the cleanness of the banner. So Congrats Wes, you are the Winner of this challenge!

The harder I think the challenge is, the more time you will have. I think thats a fair way to do it.....and I personally thought making a simple banner for Project Custom wouldnt take more than 3 days.....but the next couple should be longer.....there not gonna get much easier.

I know this would not do anything to my score, (I would never argue with the scoring), but adding a point for helping....That just seems unfair, becasue it's an art challenge...Not a help me and you will get an extra point challenge. I'm not saying anything against Necro_Thy or BR, but it just seems unfair to all the other challengers.

It would not matter to me if it was 1 point or 100 points. The fact is it's and art contest, and helping you out is nice, but it does not have anything to do with art. I don't want to start a fight, I'm just pointing it out.

I agree with Infernape. Like anyone will say, that 1 extra point won't matter too much. Help is always encouraged from anyone, but scores should directly reflect a piece's quality, not the help that the maker offered. I have nothing against BR or Necro_Thy, and I also know that the scores will have little effect on who's eliminated and who wins the round, but it's only fair for all contestants to be scored just as equally, whether they helped with something or not. The reward for that help is a better rep and graditude from the one helped. For any caring person, that alone is enough to satisfy them, and such kind-hearted people don't want to be favored in a fun and serious competition just because of it. At least... that's how I am. There's my two cents. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, nor am I shunning anyone. I sincerely apologize if I sounded like that. Aside from the reasons I mentioned above, BR also mentioned in the main post that there are NO extra points given aside from option A when turning in the first draft. Taking that rule back might start some flaming torwards the organizer of this (in this case, BR).



DIfferent subject. Should I resize my banner so other's have room to fit it in their sig? The original size, of course will still be available, but I see that Necro_Thy is having trouble fitting in the credits in his sig. These credits could also be where people like to put their extra links and stuff, and I don't want to take that away from them.

Really sorry....that was completly my fault. I had no intention of giving pika2 that score....it was completely a mistake. I edited it....it didnt change things too much, but thanks for pointing that out. Effort ties into how good the final piece was, and the difficulity of the piece....I believe I graded fairly. And I didnt mean that text.....you used both, which was kinda "well.....which one" type to me....
