Southern California Regionals (19-20 Jan 2013)

While I didn't end the day quite how I wanted to (or felt like I should have), I had a lot of fun playing and visiting the Queen Mary again. I don't know when the next time I'll be able to make it out there but I'm glad I could give it a go once again.

dmaster out.

Helping judge was fantabulous. The staff was fantastic and the problems were minimal. Thanks to the wonderful seniors who didn't cause any problems for your staff :)

Oh, and whoever made that Bacon EX card is my hero. Dave Schwimmer took it home to show Mike Liesek. I only wish I could have taken a picture to show the world.

Not yet, anyway.

...Wait, Dave seriously took it home with him? Ahahahahaha!! Nice.

So, my Regionals adventure!

I was staffing both days, instead of playing. I woke up at 5.30am on Saturday so I could get there by 7am (it's a 45-minute drive, plus me preparing beforehand). I had a RH Great Ball for Rummage (turns out he didn't need it) and a judge shirt for Zero, who I found out was judging that weekend as well. Crazy.

The best part about being event staff is you get to see what the vendors are selling - and call dibs before the players are allowed inside. One of the other guys did just that, and snagged the only Flareon plushie being sold. I found out that he did that because he was actually a Rocket Executive (he even showed me the undershirt to prove it). I did the same thing later with Meloetta. Success.

We had a guy from TPCi there around taking pictures and such and working for the staff. I don't know if that was the case back in October or if there were TPCi reps all across the country, but this is the first time I saw one at an event like this. Really nice friendly guy.

My task on Saturday was that Zero and I would be in charge of alternately handing out Random Goodness (for all the divisions) and then doing random deck checks for Seniors. We ran into a few errors - one of which was that one guy put 2 shiny Terrakion on his decklist when he only had 1, and one of his friends went and traded for a 2nd one to help him out. Trippy.

All in all, Saturday was a big full day, and it was the day where I got to interact with the players the most. I saw a lot of old friends and met a lot of new ones as well! Here's the list of the Beachers I saw, in alphabetical order:

~Amt (The only one on this list I didn't actually talk to. I saw her there.)
~blargh257 (He got 4-0 right away and then scrubbed it and went 4-3. I have no idea how.)
~dmaster (Hadn't seen him since Arizona States, and it was really awesome to catch up with him again. Meaty asked me to hug him, but I decided against it.)
~Gistica (He offered me $100 to flip a table for an invalid move during a match. I never got a chance to do it. Best part about it: he was dead serious. I even saw the $100 bill.)
~Keeper of Night (As promised, I only spoke to him in one-word sentences.)
~Meaty (The guy I wanted to see the most. He came down with his friend Nigel, who was the only 8-0 in Swiss - impressive! He stuck around a little for Sunday, but sadly Nigel lost in T32...to the guy who eventually got 2nd.)
~Rummage (Head judge for Seniors. He's quite a taskmaster, but he takes his job very seriously and I respect that.)
~WPM (Bit of a shock to see him here; I honestly wasn't expecting it. He was sporting a really cool jacket, for which I complemented him.)
~Zero (Seriously, get a haircut.)

...I think there was 1 or 2 others but I probably forgot your names and I'm really sorry.

Here's a list of Beachers I didn't see:

~Elite Stride
~Emolga2254
~pokemonjoe
~Puff-Sun

Elite Stride was the only one of you I don't know if you were there. I don't think you were there on Saturday, and as for Sunday I was downstairs almost the whole day and thus didn't interact much with peeps.

I know a lot of you saw me and recognized me too. A lot more of you probably saw me and didn't recognize me. I was the judge with badge pins all over his shirt - 8 on each sleeve and 8 in the front, for a total of 24. Swag.

Saw the top-cut list on Sunday and found out one of the X-2s didn't make it. I was counting all the people I recognized who made it in, and I only saw a few: Gilbert R (won a Cities recently, I think he made it to either T16 or T8), Sammy S (32nd seed, bubbled into cut, and ended up going 2nd YEAH SAMMY!!), and Keith H (I think he lost in T32). Also, one of my friends in Seniors ended up getting into T16, and went as far as 3rd place with his deck.

After that was all said and done, and all the players got kicked out (lol), I was doing the deck checks for the T32 Masters (to be concluded tomorrow). There were a few...interesting errors, some easily resolvable, some really annoying (like having 4 Dark Patch and 2 Dark Claw in a list, but writing down Dark Patch for both entries - needless to say, his deck got 2 more basic Energy).

Then all the staff got taken out to California Pizza Kitchen and treated. I went home after that and man was I sore. All my limbs ached, my feet were really tender, and I woke up in the middle of the night from all the pain. Man, being flat-footed sucks.

Sunday!

The day before, I had asked one of the guys to hold one of the plushies for me (an Audino), because I didn't have enough money on me on Saturday (I wish parking at the Queen Mary wasn't $15 and so darn expensive), and plus, Audino wasn't all that popular. Sure enough, when I got there (imagine all my waking up and driving there exactly 1 hour later than Saturday), and walked by the stand, there he was, walking right up to me, holding it. He remembered. Good man. While I was at it, I snagged a Torchic plushie from the stand as well - which I later got offers for from two of the players. I wasn't quite ready to sell it off that fast :p

Although Sunday was VGC, I spent all day working with the top cuts that didn't conclude on Saturday: T4 of Juniors (out of T8), T8 of Seniors (out of T16), and T32 of Masters (out of T32) - so Jrs and Srs got one round of top-cut out of the way yesterday. I actually just focused on Masters top cut and spectating all those matches, plus running odd jobs for the head judge when needed. Emphasis on running. I ended up having to fetch the TPCi rep a lot for photo ops and stuff.
But at least I got to sit down! Nothing like yesterday.

Speaking of VGC, one of the guys at my league wanted to borrow my Cloyster for VGC - apparently it was a spur-of-the-moment decision to use on his team. (It was the same Cloyster that swept an entire team of Ubers.) I said he'd have to make it quick since I was on the clock, and he got there early enough that I could trade it to him. All the divisions for VGC had a T8 cut...he was in Seniors and got 9th. I'm a bit sad that he didn't pull through all the way, but...my Cloyster is no slouch.

I ended up checking out after the Masters top cut was over - funnily enough, the 1st- and 2nd-place finishers for Masters in TCG were the 31st and 32nd seed, respectively. I was a bit conflicted at the result - I wanted the 32nd seed (Sammy) to win, since he was a local and well-liked at tourneys around here, but I wanted the deck of the 31st seed (Alex) to win, since it was a really fun and interesting deck. Ah well, can't have best of both worlds.

Overall, it was a really full weekend! Here's all the goodies I got:

~Five plushies I got from the vendors (here's a picture for anyone who cares)
~60 packs of Boundaries Crossed (out of which I pulled 1 of each Cress EX, 2 Celebi EX, 2 Computer Search, 1 Crystal Edge, 1 Landorus EX, 1 WKEX, 1 FA Keldeo EX, a shiny Terrakion, and about a jillion Skyla/Swoobat/Grumpig)
~The above 2 items ended up cancelling each other out in terms of cost (lol there went my Christmas money)
~1 regular Flareon Regs promo plus 3 Staff ones
~A fancy-looking PTE Games token (it's not a coin because sadly it's not a legal randomizer)
~A treated dinner at California Pizza Kitchen (their pizza is good, just odd)
~A chance to hang out with all my old friends on the Queen Mary (I'm on a boat)
~Two Cloyster (to collect dust next to the awesome one I already have - gg Abram)
~I got 4000 miles on my car o.o
~All of which culminated into one heck of an awesome weekend!

I love you all.

Bad luck and 12 draw supporters, that's how...
Someday I will make a consistent deck then I shall smash you all.

Blargh, I'm upset with both you and Blah. You both had Rummage and myself as judges in the senior area and yet neither of you said a word to us :(

Ha, I remember you complaining about that.

That's okay I still hugged him.

~Gistica (He offered me $100 to flip a table for an invalid move during a match. I never got a chance to do it. Best part about it: he was dead serious. I even saw the $100 bill.)

I almost snatched it from him, too.

I'm flattered. (I think.)

~WPM (Bit of a shock to see him here; I honestly wasn't expecting it. He was sporting a really cool jacket, for which I complemented him.)

WHY WAS I NOT INFORMED!?

~Zero (Seriously, get a haircut.)

lolololololololol Mirman

...I think there was 1 or 2 others but I probably forgot your names and I'm really sorry.

Ha scrubs.

If anyone cares, I finished an extremely amazing and impressive 4-4. I started 2-0 and was feeling rather confident, but then I lost a close game in which I would have donked if I went first, got donked myself round 4, actually had a legit lost from a bad matchup and the fact that my opponent ran 4 potion and a gold potion, and hit all of them... I won the next 2, and lost the last round, possibly due to a small misplay. Let it be noted that I went first ONCE that whole day, being round 2. I also now realize that I went on a losing streak because I disposed of my crumpled paper airplane in the contest before round 3, and that thing was good luck I tell you. Meh. I was screwed from the moment that I got donked. Two regionals now, thrown off by a donk.

My highlights/lol moments from judging:
~I thought this one kid was having a seizure, but he was just happy/did a good move during his game
~Seeing WPM at least 6 times, but knowing for a FACT he doesn't know who I am.
~50+ people asking me what the special token was supposed to be used for.
~Pizza party dinner thing.
~Vileplume (actually, just winning a game because of Gloom)
~Someone writing that they play "N" N's on their decklist.

Sad faces:
~Most people not introducing themselves to me. -_-"
~Spending 20 minutes looking for a trophy.
~15+ penalties because people drew 1 too many with N.
~The Overall HJ asking on Day 1 "Who's Josh?" XD

@DNA: We had that penalty a lot. Someone in Top 8 almost had to play with 0 DarkraiEX and MewtwoEX in their deck >.>

Reports:
Got on the road at 7:30 Saturday morning. There was no traffic, so we were there by 9:00. I decide to play Hammertime over Darkrai/Mewtwo, fill out my decklist, and wait for:

R1 vs. Nik Pavlovic w/ Tornadus/Sigilyph/Virizion

So I start out trying to figue out what he's playing once 1 of each of his attackers hits the field. I take an early lead and almost win. I have the game in hand when he pulls a Shaymin EX, attach, E switch, retreat, KO on my second to last Darkrai. I have a Keldeo and a Darkrai with 2 energy apiece. I have 2 prizes left and 4 cards in deck, 1 of which is an energy. I catcher his Tornadus EX with 90, Juniper for the rest of my deck... And find my last energy prized. GG.

0-1

R2 Vs. Ho-Oh
I start Sableye to his Landorus. He gets T1 Hammerhead. I potion and pass. He hits me again. I potion and pass. He then 3HKOs my sableye for game. I look at my next card. Juniper.

0-2

R3 Vs. Darkrai Landorus
I go first and start juggling Hammers very fast, and eventually get all of her fighting energies out of play, and then sweep with Darkrai.

1-2

R4 Vs. Rayeels

I never let him see an eel, and due to my Hammers, he never even gets off an attack. I sweep.

2-2

R5 Vs. Darkrai Hydreigon

I kill off all his deinos really fast and he never sets up, so I sweep him.

3-2

R6 Vs. Darkrai Hydreigon Prism

Hammers everywhere. He gets a Hydreigon up, but I catcher it and Hammer away all of his energy. I eventually topdeck Catcher to KO his Landorus EX for game.

4-2

R7 Vs. Darkrai/Mewtwo

This game comes down to the wire. I do a big play where I hammer away a ton of energy from his active Darkrai, which buys me a few turns while he recovers and I barely pull out the win.

5-2

R8 Vs. Blastoise Keldeo, winner goes to cut.
This guy is dead silent the whole game. He doesn't even declare his attacks. He gets a T2 Blastoise and Keldeo with 3 energy and kills my Sableye. Next turn, he attaches 3 more and kills my Keldeo. Then I hammer one off, he Energy Retrievals, attaches both to his active, and kills my Darkrai. I hammer 2 more off, but he topdecks Cilan to kill another Darkrai for game.

5-3

Props:
getting cool stuff from the vendors
pulling Shiny Gardy out of 2 DEX packs
almost winning out
Boats are cool

Slops:
not meeting ANYONE from the beach
Round 2
Blastoise/Keldeo
a friend with my Darkrai/Mewtwo/Bouffalant/Hammers deck bubbling cut at 34th
no waterfountains

Having N N's in the deck was hilarious. I totally forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder :D Here's my list of epic moments and sad faces, because you set the precident:

Epic moments:
~Taking down the Create a Card pictures to find a Bacon EX card (AKA Fincham EX)
~Finding out that Dave Schwimmer used to be a professional chef and having a 10 minute conversation with him about making Ethiopian food
~Some junior told me I was his favorite judge :)
~Being the guy giving out random goodness... I made so many seniors' and juniors' day
~Getting the rare chance to do a judge ball (the player did 7 mulligans before I decided to judge ball)
~Getting to see old and new friends including (but not limited to) my NV squad, Pablo, AMT, WPM, Dmaster, Team Cholo, the AZ group, and Brandon G.
~Awesome judge dinner where we got to watch the epic (not rly) match of Karl B. (using David's vileplume) vs Chrisbo (Darkrai Hydreigon)

Sad faces:
~Learning that my knot tying skills are not up to snuff (I'm the one that hung up the banners)
~Not meeting that many new PBers
~Friends and family mostly not making cut
~My brother for thinking that Psychic types are weak to Psychic in VGC (like how Cresselia is weak to psychic in the TCG)
~Having to active judge the most boring mirror match ever (blastoise keldeo vs blastoise keldeo)... judging is fun, but the matchup wasn't

Meh... I may post more. I'll probably be judging at NV states and I might make it down to CA states or even WA states.

~15+ penalties because people drew 1 too many with N.

How many penalties from people shuffling their hand into their deck before the opponent actually played the 'N' or any other N problems? I swear that card single-handedly causes the most penalties.

I give players 5 chances to get a Basic before I do Judge Ball.

Staff meals at Regionals and up after the event is over are always memorable.

~Having to active judge the most boring mirror match ever (blastoise keldeo vs blastoise keldeo)... judging is fun, but the matchup wasn't

Try watching a battle where one player is running quad Sigilyph while the other is playing an EX deck. Takes forever.

Someone I know had that happen to him in Round 7 in Seniors. He stormed off in a huff and I had to go find him. He was really out of it.

I got to watch a T4 Cities Sigilyph vs Klinklang. That really did take forever. Game 1 was eventually won by the Klinklang player after a lot of clever plays, whereas Game 2 and 3 went like "Psydrive ALL the Klinks!"

Blargh, I'm upset with both you and Blah.
Blah was at SoCal Regionals? Given how he lives in New York I think that's extremely unlikely.

And Meaty, you should follow me around more.

I may be like insanely rude or something...but I honestly don't know who you are lol. I only went down to the Senior area once so I think that would be the only place I would see you if you judged down there.

Glad to know that you know me though haha.

dmaster out.

Seriously? Did nobody take any pictures?! Get those pics up pronto, people.

@DNA
Beautiful write up on your weekend, I loved it (judging sounds awesome). And no, I actually ended up being loaded down with other obligations and couldn't go, and I kind of regret not just making the time to go, haha. This will be a lesson to me not to miss again.

geez, I already spent half my time at the tourney doing that, but if you insist...

Congratulations to everyone there who did well
I couldn't be there because Australia is very far away. Very.

@DNA, those plushies are amazing. I'll give like, money-dollars for them.

But I already have money-dollars in my country...

Which division did you judge?
On Saturday I was giving out Random Goodness and doing random deck checks in Seniors; I wasn't much on the floor. On Sunday, I was judging the Masters top cut (32 and onward).

Yeah, I was giving out the Random Goodness on Saturday (but not Sunday), so that might help.
