RE: The official Super Smash Brawl thread/characters.
This topic is becoming FAR too spammy due to a certain few members. If PMJ and Alchemist weren't posting then this probably would have been locked long ago, so guys everyone please put effort into your posts.
Alchemist and PMJ are basically correct with the majority of their posts though. Sakurai said that there were only going to be a maximum of 3 places going to 3rd party characters. One is Snake, the 2nd is probably going to be Sonic, the 3rd could be anyone major (if they have 3 places). They are NOT going to be wasting a spot on a non-main Sonic character or non-relevant Pokemon and that is the truth. They're not going to put Shadow in, or Amy, or anyone else from the Sonic series.
Only 2 characters from Melee are not going to be in Brawl according to Sakurai's blog on the SSBB main site last year. He said that there will be no "classic" characters apart from Pit in Brawl. That means no Mr.G&W and no Ice Climbers. There have not been games based around them for many many years. People might question whether Ness will appear or not, I think he will. Apart from being part of the original 12, Mother 3 [I think] (or Earthbound as others know it) was released on GBA last year. For those who don't know, that is Ness' series. More info is on Wikipedia about it.
As for the debate about clone characters... When the term "clone" comes up, we're refering to the copied moveset. Doc is a clone of Mario, Gannondorf of a clone of Captain Falcon, Roy is a clone of Marth (could be reversed but Marth is much more popular), Pichu is a clone of Pikachu, Young Link is a clone of Link and Falco is a clone of Fox. To make the game interesting and instead of having 2 of different versions of characters they simply adjusted the effects which the SAME moves had. The clones are the same, except their attacks have different damage percentages, different speeds and different knock back ranges. Yes Doc is not the same as Mario, but his moveset is basically an altered version of Mario, therefore he is a clone, and many people follow that on Smashboards.
As for clones staying in Brawl or not, some of them will. I'm pretty sure I read one of Sakurai's blogs which said that there will be no more clones in Brawl. So if any of the current clones return, Falco and Gannondorf are guaranteed due to character popularity, then they'll each have entirely new movesets. If they do decide to remove some of the clones then Pichu, Young Link, Doc and possibly Roy should be removed.
