You literally only have to see the word "you" or "I" in that story, and it would instantly get an exceptionally low mark in any kind of practice essay.

That's not what you do in an essay. You talk about an idea, whilst giving facts to push your idea upon the reader, trying to change their opinion. If you were to do that^, you would be debating, or writing a speech.

While true, most of the time for a debate, you would give your opinion, and introduce yourself.
The reader of an essay could care less who you are. Or, that's how its supposed to be.
EDIT: Can we stop arguing about this. Wait--- If team You Shalt Not Pass submitted, that means another team has as well. OH NOEZ

Why are we arguing about something so small? And I don't really care if the reader of an essay doesn't care who's writing the essay, it's perfectly acceptable to use "I" in an essay.
