The End of the World as We Know It

My biology teacher, Ronald Fonck (Also known as the grammar Nazi) has compared this to population growth. Once all of our resources are gone, a dramtic spike downward in population will occur, leaving a small amount of people, maybe from about 300 AD? As for my point of view, I agree with my teacher, but this whole thing is a television scare. I'm pretty sure some of the older members can recall a few "ends of the world." Besides that, I agree with most of you. However, I just don't think the Aztecs or religionhas anything to do with this.

1. If the Ancient Mayan Prophecies of December 21, 2012 come to fruition.
I guess this is plausible. theres alot of weird things happening in sort of a "too much to be just a coincidence," type of way. After that earthquake in Chile, the planet shifted its axis or whatever, well due to scientific research, the planet has shifted in this way 4 previous times. And each time there was a mass extinction afterwards. Now only issue is, it doesn't say how soon after. I can go on for days on 2012, I've done more research than scientists, but however, if they are true the government probably knows and will fail to reveal it to us till maybe a week before hand or something stupid like that.

2. If the Christian Evangelists are right about May 21, 2011.
Please explain this one to me as I have never heard of it

3. A Zombie Apocalypse triggered by a virus outbreak.
Whats with zombies being all the rage? 5 Years ago no one cared about zombies now thats all people talk about....Why?

4. A Robot Apocalypse takeover similiar to SkyNet from James Cameron's "Terminator" series where Robots enslave mankind.
Definately see this one as possible after some of the stuff Japan is doing by creating androids that can learn and make its own decisions. Also these Androids, if seen on the street, you'd never know it was an android. Now combine what with the Jeopardy Super Comp.....very plausible

5. A Massive Solar Storm capable of blacking out the entire planet's electrical grid, electronic devices, and instability of communication.
While this may happen, it will not send us into extinction of an end of the world scenario. While most people will think so since technology is all they know, life will move on. I really hope this happens, technology has person human communication skills. Instead of talking face to face, people seat next to eachother and text now. Come on people....

6. A Meteor Strike similiar to what befell the Dinosaurs 65 Million years ago.
If its happened once, its bound to happen again.

7. Global Warming and Climate Change at it's worst.
Global Warming and Climate Change actually have nothing to do with mankind contrary to what people will tell you. If you request to see any research on this done by governments (only people that really fund it), you'll get a bunch of papers with blacked out info. Its honestly a big scam to make people buy more expensive products because they are "green." Get the economy rolling....Climate Change and Global Warming is a natural phenomenon. There have been 4 or 5 major Ice Ages in Earth's history, and after each one the climat changes and we have global warming. And after so long, we enter global cooling (where earth is right now, climate has actually decreased in past 20 years)

8. Basically the stuff we see in Disaster and Science Fiction Movies but not all of them.
Possible. Its true that the worlds largest volcano is underneath yellowstone. And its always possible for it to erupt, and if that were to happen, believe it'd knock out half the US, if not all of north america. I think the movie 2012 really showed a good idea of can happen. All of which is really possible too.

Stupid people will panic when robots become able to think almost like a human, and riot against every piece of technology ever. Then they would realize that they need technology to survive and die off slowly.

As far as all these 'prediction' people go, I would be wary. So, there are the Egyptians, the Aztecs, Sir Isaac Newton, some old crone who predicted the Great Fire of London - all of who have predicted the end of the world. However, they're all years apart. These are all people who were either very clever or predicted other things (or both). So I wouldn't be jumping to the conclusion that just because they said some other stuff to be true, as the end of the world is obviously quite tricky to get right. Then of course there are the umpteen reasons I can see to disprove the Aztecs, etc.

As scuba stevee rightly pointed out, the world will only end when God tells Chuck Norris to finish it. So there.

Unless, of course, like me, you believe the world ended the day Nageki and Dageki's English names were revealed.

1. Nuclear war
2. overpopulation
3. climate change
4. asteroid
5. alien invasion
6. frogs
Honestly, I'm surprised that anybody can take the whole 2012 thing seriously. Project, I think/hope CSJ was joking.

Some guy (I forgot his name) claims that May 21, 2011 is to be the day when the Rapture occurs when Jesus returns to Earth. With their beliefs on what's going on with the Middle East and Israel that's what they think, but of course this isn't the first time Christian Evangelists set a date for the Second Coming of Christ cause I've checked on Wikipedia.

The Bible does say that no one except God knows the day, time, and hour of when the end comes. Jesus is accounted for giving out tidbits of what to expect that leads up to it before He was crucified by the Romans 2,011 years ago and was resurrected by God Himself by paying the ultimate price of dying for the sins of mankind.

Other religions especially the Muslims with the Koran (Islamic Bible) have similiar beliefs to what the Christians believe on how it will play out according to their beliefs.

Thanks to large number of films and video games, the idea of a zombie apocalypse has entered the mainstream and there have been efforts by many fans to prepare for a hypothetical future zombie apocalypse. Efforts include creating weapons, selling posters to inform people on how to survive a zombie outbreak, and creating websites "documenting" zombie attacks.

I was reading a science magazine asking the question as to whether a zombie apocalypse is possible and it said that it's plausible but it won't be easy to accomplish fortunately for us though. Yes there has been reports of Haitian voodoo with their "Magic" of bringing dead people back to life however they would only seem like they are alive. They're still dead they just don't have a soul.

No need to go all doom and gloom on this. We're no where near John Connor's doomsday. But there are certainly risks. If we're intelligent, we'll avoid them. The problem is that no one really understands the singularity or how it will work, not even the Japanese. So just about anything is possible. And from human history, its not likely to be completely pretty.

We don't know If current Modern Age Technology has gone too far, however technological progress has outstripped our society's ability to adapt to the changes it makes. For instance, the social security issue that has come because of advances in medical science.

If I recall there was a documentary on the History Channel regarding the theory that one of the Ice Age's that occured during the Earth's history in this case the Middle Ages resulted in the Black Plague that spread throughout Europe at the time. It's been what how many years since then and would global cooling result in another black plague like what happened in Europe during the Middle Ages? I hope not.

It just seems like whenever temperature changes and the weather changes, peoples allergies act up and in some cases they'll get sick by catching the cold or the flu or it could lead to a worse case scenario that could lead to death. I don't see that happening but it did bring my attention when the whole H1N1 Swine Flu Paranoia fiasco happened 2 years ago and luckily it turned out it wasn't as huge of a threat as first thought.

I think all of us humans are going to live off of fast food. We'll get fat and die which will make the world end. Something like that. Or, us selfish humans will cut down all of the trees in the world (Just look at the rainforests!) which will make us loose all of our oxygen and we will die, and eventually the world will fall apart because of the lack of trees. Pollution could make the world explode maybe..... :D

I don't see that happening, have you noticed how fast food joints lately have been curbing their unhealthy products for more healthier ones to help people become less obese? Yes there is an obesity crisis in America and that also in some cases associates with how superficial our society has become. McDonald's no longer carries Super Size Fries and Wendy's no long carries Biggie Size Fries anymore due to high intake of calories.

Humans are still a LONG way from stripping the entire planet of it's trees, it's a problem that associates with our need of resources to keep the planet going especially the economy as well. The world is already suffering from the effects of Climate Change and it's only going to get worse unless countries around the world act to curb greenhouse gases and keeping the ozone layer safe.

Because of the effects of Climate Change that is increasing the price of foods and goods around the world through Inflation with the Global Economy. A recent drought in China increased the price of Wheat which increased the price of Bread and possibly Dairy products such as Milk. A hurricane hitting Florida could increase the price of oranges sold in supermarkets, that sort of idealogy.

Ooh, that reminds me of an awesome song.

THE WORLD IS GOING TO END WHEN THE Y2K ATTACKS US THEN IT WILL BE ALL OVER CAUSE THE NUCLEAR BOMBS WILL BLOW THEMSELVES UP. Nah, but really, I hope a mutated disease cause the Zombie Apocalypse.

we'll probably end up slowly killing ourselves

@vulpix yolk ...do you even know what y2k is... or even stands for? "y2k" cannot physically attack us.

@flaming drsicoll only in america

Most likely cause: I don't know and really don't care. The way things are right now, I don't see any logical way for an apocalypse to occur. Despite having the ability to destroy all life on earth, we are fairly stable as living things. Irrational/Abstract/unlikely means of apocalypse (Sun explosion, 2012, w/e) would be something we cannot control (at least to our current knowledge) therefor there's no point stressing over it. If something crazy happens, oh well, nothing we could have done to prepare. Otherwise, we all should be safe in our lifetime.

I don't think the universe will end, but technology keeps on evolving so "the world as we know it" is ending all the time. When the world DO end, we will not be the able to stop it so we should not worry about it.

I am very scared of the year of the dragon, especially because the Mayans predict the world's end then!

(HINT: 2012 is the end of the entire world, NOT just the long march)

A supervirus will kill about 2/3 of the world population. This relieved strain will make currently existing resources more sustainable for the remaining people. I predict such an incident happening within the next 50 years.

(this is me just pulling a theory out of my butt btw lol. Who knows if it's accurate, don't bother m e with how right or how wrong I am)

The world will end when Pokemon ends. The fans will be so mad that Nintendo canceled it that we will destroy everything!

It's actually the end of a 5,125 year long cycle. The world did not end 5,125 years ago at the end of the previous cycle. Why would it end now?

Our water supply is dying and in 2013 the government will have to start putting water regulations in more than half the United States, and the oil supply is depleting. These are subjects of my high concern. With the increase of population and industrialization we are using up more and more of our resources. Our ancestors weren't smart enough to think ahead into the future about how we could stop our resources from depleting, but it is only natural for the human mind to only address the issue until it has created impact.

@Zenith - Granted its an end of a 5,125 year cycle, but they only had so many cycles in the mayan calender with this being the last one.
