Pokemon Will Pokemon die out?

I haven't read the entire thread, so I apologize if anything I mention here has been brought up already.

A selfish part of me hopes the Pokémon franchise does end within my lifetime, only because the notion that after my death I'd be missing all of the never-before-seen Pokémon is a bit unsettling. Part of me doesn't want to miss out on new Pokémon - I want to see them all, and have the chance to catch them all. (As sad as that sounds.)

The more realistic part of me expects the Pokémon franchise will easily outlive me and continue to evolve as it has done so far. Perhaps it will eventually die out, but it'll be hard to take down for sure.

LOL! i do have a same feeling as you do.. =)

Actully, a teeny-tiny part of me wants that too... But hey, even if our generation of Pokemon Trainers doesn't get to catch 'em all, we will always know that future generations will never run out of Pokemon fun. :)

After the release of the 5th generation it feels like it's gone downhill, sure in the previous 4 generations there were new pokemon but there were always 1-2 that had something to do with the previous generations. Like Crobat, Pichu, Leafeon, Glaceon.

B/W tried to copy the original release but it feels like there are so many legendary, But I guess we can't tell if something is ledgendary just because it doesn't evolve..

Pokemon Red/Blue sales: Approx 20 Million
Pokemon Black/White sales: Approx 11 Million

The standard of Pokemon games have been slowly declining. (G/S around 14 mil, R/S around 13 mil, D/P around 14 mil)

Yes it will die out, all the more reason for an epic MMO.
Where did you get those sale figures? They are totally off. Also comparing the B/W to R/B right now is wrong since B/W hasn't even been out for a year. And to be honest, it's going to take something special for Nintendo to mirror R/B sales. And btw, the correct numbers are these:

Red and Blue: approx. 23.64 million
Gold and Silver: approx. 23 million
Ruby and Sapphire: approx.13 million
Diamond and Pearl: approx. 17.39 million
Black and White: approx. 12.87 million(just for record, Black and White is looking to out sell D/P)

So contrary to popular belief, the sells of main series pokemon games are actually increasing with each generation. And we are not even counting the remakes, the 3rd editions, and spinoffs, so I can safely say pokemon is doing just fine.

I wasn't THAT far out. 2 or 3 million give or take.
B/W has already been out for over a year in Japan, even though, it hasn't been out in America for a year, I doubt it will get another 5 mil, by your figures, in the next month. America seems to be the biggest consumer of Pokemon games according to vgchartz.com But even with this, 5 million in the next month, or even in the next year sounds ridiculous.

You say Pokemon sales are increasing, but, have you even read what you have posted? 23 is less than 23.64, 13 is less than 23. B/W even sold less than R/S. I don't see how B/W can outsell D/P.

On the topic of spinoffs, every time they make one, those figures go down too.
According the the vgsales wiki every sequel to the spinoff sells less than it's first.
Stadium 2 sold less than the first, XD sold less than Colosseum and the Mystery Dungeon explorer games in the US didn't even break 1 million.

^Seriously... BW is recent, of course those games still haven't sold more than the older ones... And what he meant was, starting with Gen 3 (which seems to be the worst time of Pokémon regarding the sales and popularity), the numbers have been increasing again...

The only thing dead about Pokemon is the show. Even that might not be going for a while, Pokemon is going to be here a long long time.

VG Chartz is simply estimates. They're not concrete sales numbers. Wikipedia is a far more reliable source for particularly popular games, as they compile them only from official statements from the companies that make the games.

By the way, Pokémon brings in about US$1 billion every year to Nintendo. This isn't like Spyro where they're struggling to break even and a wrong move will send the franchise and company into the red. Pokémon is incredibly stable as a franchise.

Also, 17.39 is bigger than 13. And Pokémon games have a long tail as far as game sales are concerned: Why is it that used copies of Pokémon games never seem to go down in price? Because they continue being sold for quite a while. When Platinum came out, Diamond/Pearl's sales were not even at 10 million yet. Even with Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver coming out, Diamond/Pearl still managed to get another 7 million sales. This is the exact same sales strategy that Sonic games have: They are slow out of the gate but have steady sales years after the games come out. Sonic Generations only sold about 300,000 copies on its first week but sold about 100,000 copies per week since. (The game now stands at about 1.6 million copies and expected to reach 1.7 by this same time next week. Similarly, Sonic Colors hit the 2 million mark after Sonic Generations came out.) Heck, when top 10 bestselling games of each week get reported by stores like Toys R Us or Gamestop, notice that Pokémon games stay on there for years on end. It's something to see that when, say, Super Mario Galaxy came out in Japan, it was not able to beat Pokémon Diamond/Pearl that weekend, which had already been up there for 2 years.

It's what happens when you sell to kids. They don't care about getting the games as soon as they come out. They'll get them when they get excited about them, which can be any time. (Even in subsequent generations.) So yes, I do believe we'll get another 5 million--perhaps not over the next year, but over the next few years. But I expect no less than 2 million by the end of this year.

Kids love the Legendary Pokémon. It's why they became the featured Pokémon on the boxes ever since Gold/Silver. I get annoyed at their increasing numbers, but there is a business logic to it.

so many numbers!?! Ophie's right. many people love Pokemon, and will buy preceding games even if they know that new and improved versions will come out. Also, the legendaries help heck, that's how i got hooked

At some point maybe, but the thing is, there is always another set of young children to come in and take the place of the older kids that left it behind. As long as it continues to evolve with the time it will last a very long time.

Tis a shame. Those were some of the best games i've played overall on DS.
I think if pokemon keeps on where its going, maybe it will maybe it wont.
But i'm pretty sure the R/S/E remakes are going to BRING IN THE CASH when we get them. And if Nintendo cares about their money, they'd better start soon.
(wink wink nudge nudge) ;)

Oh darn I hope not! :) At least in my family-I will make sure it wont die out! :p IF-god forbid-IF I somehow have kids they will grow up loving pokemon! =D I thought when my mom showed me her strawberry shortcake, my little ponies ( the FIRST original ones!!! ), and rainbow bright from when SHE was little that those were "dead" franchises, but hey hey thats what I see in toystores stores right now! Almost like it came back to life! :) Like randomly one day hahah they all kinda came back to life :) Im sure pokemon will just keep coming out with games to keep staying alive! Even after it dies though I bet there will still be merchandise in stores somewhere. LOL Barbie def wont die out though...

Well I reckon 15-20 years it's still quite popular but now with the older generation its not much for kids these days really its most of the adults that were fans of it when they were younger

I wish younger fans would recognize the older gens...I don't want the first few generations to die! I want them to live on forever...
I feel that they're becoming much too forgotten

Well its partially because the game consoles are not available to them they need to bring a Pokemon Collection game that means you can play them all on a DS or 3DS

in the game: obviously pokemon they die eventually, but you never see them do. This one guy in pokemon black says, "It's time to ring the bell for my [some pokemon]."
the other interpretation of pokemon dying: i don't think it will for a while. look at mario; a video game about a plumber has been around for like 40 years!

oh, and i'm only 12 and i still love the red/blue versions, although i have never played them. i am currently watching the original series online.

Until someone makes something similar to Pokemon that a lot of people find superior, I don't see it happening in the near future. Nintendo makes big bucks from Pokemon, and it has an incredibly large fanbase. As long as they keep making money and people keep buying, it will go on for a long time.

The flip side is that Pokemon only has so much space to keep adding new regions, once that space is filled, the series will either stop (which I doubt) or will take off in a different direction. For instance, a game in which you travel to the past or future and capture new Pokemon (I could see traveling to the past being one game and traveling to the future as the duo version). If not time travel, space travel is another option to explore. Travel to a new planet to capture never before seen Pokemon! One version could be that planet, the duo version is another planet!

And if the main series of Pokemon games is discontinued, I'm sure Nintendo is capable of producing spin offs, such as the Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness games (Just realized that Gale of Darkness could be shortened to GoD ._.).

the past future thing would be a great thing. imagine: the first half of the game takes place in a futuristic world, and along the way battling the 8 gym leaders you find secrets that just can not be explained. When all of a suden, something happens (you befriend a timetraveling pokemon or maybe a scientific experiment?) and you have to battle the 8 gym leader's grandparents that have a similar style but older pokemon from the first 2 generations and the unsolved mysteries are solve and you defeat the bad guys, Team something (maybe main ingredient used in the time machine?) and face the past elite 2 and future elite 2 and then unlock the other side of the game, and are free to travel from past to future and back. THAT would be an epic game, especially if the past world is the world of red/blue with all of kanto gloriously restored and the future is the same region but in the future.
another thing that would be funny is if you can battle ash, misty, and brock (all hidden somewhere on the past map) and cilan, dawn, ash, misty, brock, iris (all in the future region.)
