VG Chartz is simply estimates. They're not concrete sales numbers. Wikipedia is a far more reliable source for particularly popular games, as they compile them only from official statements from the companies that make the games.
By the way, Pokémon brings in about US$1 billion every year to Nintendo. This isn't like Spyro where they're struggling to break even and a wrong move will send the franchise and company into the red. Pokémon is incredibly stable as a franchise.
Also, 17.39 is bigger than 13. And Pokémon games have a long tail as far as game sales are concerned: Why is it that used copies of Pokémon games never seem to go down in price? Because they continue being sold for quite a while. When Platinum came out, Diamond/Pearl's sales were not even at 10 million yet. Even with Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver coming out, Diamond/Pearl still managed to get another 7 million sales. This is the exact same sales strategy that Sonic games have: They are slow out of the gate but have steady sales years after the games come out.
Sonic Generations only sold about 300,000 copies on its first week but sold about 100,000 copies per week since. (The game now stands at about 1.6 million copies and expected to reach 1.7 by this same time next week. Similarly,
Sonic Colors hit the 2 million mark after
Sonic Generations came out.) Heck, when top 10 bestselling games of each week get reported by stores like Toys R Us or Gamestop, notice that Pokémon games stay on there for years on end. It's something to see that when, say,
Super Mario Galaxy came out in Japan, it was not able to beat
Pokémon Diamond/Pearl that weekend, which had already been up there for 2 years.
It's what happens when you sell to kids. They don't care about getting the games as soon as they come out. They'll get them when they get excited about them, which can be any time. (Even in subsequent generations.) So yes, I do believe we'll get another 5 million--perhaps not over the next year, but over the next few years. But I expect no less than 2 million by the end of this year.

After the release of the 5th generation it feels like it's gone downhill, sure in the previous 4 generations there were new pokemon but there were always 1-2 that had something to do with the previous generations. Like Crobat, Pichu, Leafeon, Glaceon.
B/W tried to copy the original release but it feels like there are so many legendary, But I guess we can't tell if something is ledgendary just because it doesn't evolve..
Kids love the Legendary Pokémon. It's why they became the featured Pokémon on the boxes ever since Gold/Silver. I get annoyed at their increasing numbers, but there is a business logic to it.
