(1) Protect Your Computer! [3/26]

It's sad some people have nothing better to do with their lives than ruin another person's. I do partially believe that it may be a hoax (I mean, it could end up being even more fun for them if it caused mass-hysteria and didn't even happen :p), I'm going to play it safe (might switch over to Ubuntu on my external HD).

ok, if I take my computer offline and shut it down on the 30th before I go to bed, will I get infected? I have norton but its not Norton360 so its useless this computer is my moms, iit has 360. so on the 1st I cant play Maplestory or go on pokebeach??

I use firefox and have AVG, Spybot, and Anti-Malware (A lesser known trojan killer but one of the VERY few capable of completely removing the nasty Vundo {AKA Virtumonde} Trojan from your computer).

I hope that's sufficient enough.

It existing, however, is a bit weird, as most viruses nowadays are made to obtain personal information, and this seems more like an online terrorist attack from the days of the old skool hackers.

That would probably be a data miner if it were to obtain personal information, wouldn't it? It's a direct violation of every privacy code ever made, but I don't think a data miner would be a virus.

I also got the impression that virus attacks weren't so much terrorist attacks as much as they were just plain immature pranks. A terrorist attack ALWAYS has a political or social message, and the harmful acts are either symbolic or a demonstration of the terrorist's goals. From what I've seen, most computer viruses are just made because someone wanted to amuse themselves by permanently destroying computer networks--in other words, an act of schadenfreude or frustration.

I knew someone in middle school who created a virus. He used it to attack the comptuers in the P.E. office. There wasn't really anything he had against the P.E. coaches or anything. He just liked seeing them panic.

odvious april fool joke why wait till a certain day most hackers dont wait odvious rumor just to end up being false just like the gang inieation at walmarts

Even Anti-virus sites have information about Conficker C, so this should be taken seriously. People using any type of network and people that use USB drives sound like they are more at risk. All it takes is one computer on a network to get infected, and it can infect all other computers on the network that are not protected. I would presume this could potentially even happen if someone with an infected computer tries to "piggyback" off of a wireless network. If the person piggybacking has an infected computer, it could possibly infect computers on that same networks, and possibly the reverse, as well. I have read that some people advise disabling Auto-Run on USB drives to prevent transmission of the virus. However, it is debated as to how effective it is.

Another thing I would advise is to avoid saving and typing sensitive information on public networks (school, library, etc), just in case the virus installs data-miners.

Thanks for the heads up. We have very up-to-date virus software, but I'll ask my Dad to be doubly sure and re-check everything.

Wow this does not sound good but I am protected because our security IS really good.:)

My Mom told me about this a few days ago.
We've got McAfee on our computer. Do you think that'll keep it safe?

I would give some reasons as to why I believe this to be an April Fool's joke but I've never heard of "RickRoll'ing" before so I won't push it.

Where have you been the last two years?

Rick Rolling is a real internet meme.

I'm concerned for my laptop as I don't want to lose my files or anything

As for Platinum...Don't have it...Don't want it...Despise handhelds

How exatly does a worm hit you? Is it from going on a website opening up an e mail or does it just hit you and take your identity etc.?

Yep, playing Platinum, and will continue all week.

Lol April 1st. I doubt my Mom even knows about this nor cares, as do I. I got IE, but we got Carbonite backing up important files as well as Norton Antivirus.

dmaster out.
