RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

So would I reduce the stats I'm not putting EVs in? I'm still trying to figure this out but I'm still new to taking away EVs.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

There are 6 different kinds of berries that reduce EVs, and each one targets a specific stat. The names are Qualot, Hondew, Kelpsy, Grepa, Tamato, and one other one I don't remember. Each one will lower 10 EVs out of a specific stat (it'll say in the description), or lower it to 100 if it's above 100.

That way you can pick and choose which EVs you're removing. In Generation five, they must be obtained through the Dream World (Windswept Sky area).

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Which one should I keep? Pt.2

2 Makuhita (Adamant)

IV's (HP/Atk/Def/SpAtk/SpDef/Spd):
1st Makuhita - 20/11/30/30/22/30
2nd Makuhita - 3/23/24/18/12/30

So, which is better?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I agree, due to the large HP and defensive stats, which are basically Hariyama's bread and butter.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but when breeding genderless pokemon (EX rotom) with a ditto, which is considered the male and which is the female for the RNG reporter.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I'm trying to build a team for VGC Doubles for this year. Now, without getting into too much detail, my team likes to abuse Earthquake a lot, but at the cost of that, 3 out of 6 Pokemon are weak to Ice, and only 1 on my team actually resists it. Even then, the one that resists it isn't a reliable switch in.

I'm trying to think of a good Pokemon that can switch into Ice Beam safely, be it via resistance or just sheer bulk, and might not take too much damage from Earthquake, plus can actually pull its own weight. It also can't have Surf as an attacking move.

Gyarados and Ferrothorn come to mind immediately, as does Bronzong, but I want to hear any other thoughts.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Bronzong would make a great synergetic choice. Even though EQ is super-effective, physically defensive Jirachi can sponge hits quite well (Banned hurr durr). You've also got Rotom wash, where even on the offensive versions, Ice Beam doesn't do much, and EQ is nulled by levitate. I'm not too spectacular at VGC, but those are the choices that come to mind for me.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

...I totally forgot about Rotom-Wash. I was thinking of Lanturn, who can switch into a lot, but for whatever reason I didn't make the connection (I always say that Rotom-W is a floating Lanturn).

I know Jirachi is banned in VGC due to its event-exclusive status, but I don't think Rotom-W is. I'll go check some set ideas for him today and see what I can find...

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Hey I was wondering in competitive VGC play are US players allowed to use Japanese released (but not US released) dream world abilities? Ex: the starters.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

This makes absolutely no reference to any country. So, I'd say if you legitimately obtained said /event, you may use it.

Edit: Okay, a question on my hands.
I'm deciding to breed for a Jolly Dratini. I've isolated some candidates so far which look promising...sort of. Not all of them are Jolly, but all of them have Marvel Scale and a 31 HP IV. Below I'm listing the IVs of some of them - help me decide which one I should keep.

(Note, the IVs have an error margin of 1 because I used the Subway to check them. Therefore a 21 actually means 20 or 21. However, a 30 or 31 are exact figures.)

Dratini B: 31/1/25/30/11/11 (Naive)
Dratini C: 31/9/25/3/9/23 (Jolly)
Dratini E: 31/21/9/21/11/21 (Jolly)
Dratini F: 31/9/13/31/29/30 (Hasty)

The goal of my set is something Dragon Dance-related, although I can be flexible. I didn't include A and D because they aren't worth considering.

...so, should I try to go with one of the above (I'm thinking F because not only is it great but I can go mixed if I want), or just keep trying for something better?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

E and F are the two that I would choose from. Dratini E has that high attack that makes Dragonite very threatening, but Dratini F has the bulk that also makes Dragonite a force on the battlefield.

The attack stat on F is the only reason that would take me away from choosing it. So out of those four, I would probably pick Dratini F.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Just wondering (It'll probably be a yes...), is this a good Landorus catch? Probably making it C-Scarf.

Landorus
Jolly
IVs: (HP/Atk/Def/SAtk/SDef/Spe)
31/31/12/7/14/31

It looks great to me.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Looks good to me; a Choice Band or Choice Scarf set would go nicely with that.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

What he said. Def could be better, but for a Scarf, that's fabulous.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I find a Rock Polish set to be very effective for Landorus. It has good coverage and power since the weather will likely be sand due to Tyranitar probably being on your team. This will actually let it hit harder than Groudon does with Earthquake. It also doesn't force you to be locked into one move.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Thanks, DE, but this Landorus is going to be a Scarfed scouting core for my next team. He works very well in that position given his already trollish speed.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Which factors are directly proportional to damage output?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

If you mean what I think you mean, Super Effective damage, Not Very Effective, STAB, and rain/sun boosted.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I meant like, which factors vary equally with damage output. Meaning if this factor doubles, so does damage output. If this factor halves, so does damage output.
