RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

^What Bippa said. superpokemon67 also gives a good example of that set, used by Chandelure in his recent VGC RMT, Team Howl, which happens to be one of my favorite movies. :p

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Hi, I am trying to make an anti-weather team for an up coming VGC regionals. I have several failed attempts at rain and sand teams. I was wondering what are some good anti-weather pokemon?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I would advise Gastrodon with Storm Drain for both, and Scarfed Abomasnow like sp67 has in Team Howl to screw the weather up. The Abomasnow also has Grass STAB to take out Politoed and Tyranitar with. Heatran is the best Sun counter to Ninetails, absorbing Flamethrower outright and walling Energy Ball/Solarbeam with 4x Resistance. All of them on the same team scares me, but they cover each others' weaknesses fairly well save Fighting. Gastro is covered in Grass by both, Abomasnow is covered: Fire: both, Rock: both, Steel: both, Poison: Heatran, Flying: Heatran, Fighting: Latios?, and Heatran's Water weakness is covered by both, Ground by Abomasnow, and Fighting by others. (This actually might work in singles better than doubles, now that I think about it...)

All of that sound fine and dandy, but I really do hate the idea of self inflicted passive damage, and I was wondering with relitivly poor stats all around (excluding HP) how gastordon would be useful.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Gastrodon walls a great portion of all common Rain abusers, and you may adjust to go Physical should the Sand sweepers of Landorus, Garchomp or Excadrill scare you. Abomasnow can be remedied by using another weather starter or including a bulky Cloud Nine user like Lickilicky. (It was just off the top of my head...)

I don't want to run a weather team right now I just want a team that will be able to handle the main threats of opposing weather teams. I was thinking that something like Toxicroak for rain help, Heatran for fire, and maybe Garchomp or Gliscor for sand. All of these are great individually but I want them to have synergy with eachother, that is where I am stumped.
I was even thinking trick room, but I don't know if it would be as good as 5th gen only.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Except for the fact that Garchomp is banned and Toxicroak can't take a hit...

Garchomp isn't banned in offical VCG compettive play.

Garchomp isn't banned in VGC. (Ninja'd)

I think that it would be worth having Ferrothorn for rain, because the Swift Swim abusers, especially Kingdra, can't do much to it.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Ah, okay then. I was still thinking that VGC was Unova only so I assumed it was PO.

I was thinking about that, but rain is pretty much the only thing that ferrothorn can beat (imo) because the other weathers seem to have a good enough check to him, and I know if someone has scizor like it or not ferrothorn is gone.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Ferrothorn works pretty well against Sand too, and rain is probably going to be the most common with sand second.

Even if that is true wouldn't most people be anticipating it and already have checks in place for it? (I have seen a lot of them recently)

It was this year (2011), but VGC 2012 has a wider repertoire. The banlist this time consists of all Uber-legends, Kyurem, and event-exclusive legendaries. The rest is fair game.

VGC banlist changes every year, but they're always double battles 4v4 at level 50.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

What are some good Gen-5 only checks/counters for Thundurus? I was thinking Landorus because he is immune to Thundurus's Electric STAB and I think only normally effected against the rare Grass Knot Thundurus. And Landorus can hit hard back with Stone Edge/Focus Blast. Any other ideas?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Yeah, sure, except that Landorus is slower and OHKOd by HP Ice. I think your best bet at beating Thundurus is outspeeding it.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Hey, I need some help here...
I have 2 Scyther and I don't which one I should keep.

Here's the IV's (HP/Atk/Def/SpAtk/SpDef/Spd):
1st Scyther - Jolly Nature
[17/31/21/26/7/19]

2nd Scyther - Adamant Nature
[3/23/23/19/14/22]

The Scyther I'll keep is meant to evolve to Scizor. And here's the dilemma. The Jolly one has an Atk IV of 31 but Scizor doesn't really have much base speed, has Bullet Punch and so I find Jolly nature to be a bit pointless. The Adamant one has a lower Atk IV but being Adamant, it ends up having more Attack anyway.
So, which one should I keep?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Keep the adamant one. The nature really is more important, because Scizor really has no use for speed. However, the Adamant one does have a bit less HP, but everything else is where it should be, given the IV's. You could always keep the Jolly one for the NFE tier. ;)

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I have a question about erasing EVs. Do I have to erase all of the EVs on every stat or just certain ones?

Let's say I want a Bronzong and put the EVs into defense, special defense and hp, but I already raised it past level 50 and didn't properly EV train it. Would all stats need to be erased or the other ones that I don't need to put EVs into?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

You can selectively erase EVs with the EV reducing berries. An EV reducing berry will reduce 10 EVs in the stat in question, unless that stat has over 100 EVs, in which case the EVs will be lowered to 100.
