Counter That Pokemon! - Round 20

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 3

Slowbro@Leftovers
Bold
252 HP/252 Def/4Sp Att
regenerator

- Scald
- Toxic
- Psychic
- Slack off

Fairly simple. Slowbro will take quite a bit of damage from a +2 U-Turn, but then Landorus-T had to switch out and Slowbro can Slack off. Scald does decent damage, Psychic and Toxic are for other dudes. Lots of options can be used over them.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 3

Virizion @Leftovers
Relaxed
104 HP/252 Def/152 SpA
Justified
-Substitute
-Giga Drain
-Focus Miss
-HP Ice

Will take some damage from U Turn, but can use Giga Drain to recover some of that health. Resists EdgeQuake, can set up a sub (particularly if Landy is forced out due to U Turn) and kills with HP Ice.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 3

That Virizion is hardly viable at all. It's weak and easy to force out due to its low Sp. Atk. SD and CM are good, but Sub + 3 attacks is bad on Virizion.

Edit: the worst part is the EV spread though which hurts Virizion more than it helps.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 3

Tangrowth @Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
Relaxed nature
252 HP/252 Def/4 SpDef
~Giga Drain
~Hidden Power Ice
~Sleep Powder
~Knock Off

Tangrowth is a pretty cool mon to use in OU if you ever get a chance. More HP and Defense than Slowbro, with the same awesome ability. Hidden Power Ice has to be used over Ice Beam, but you've also got Giga Drain to heal yourself while attacking with a great base 110 Special Attack. Sleep Powder cos the new sleep mechanic is cool. Knock Off will get rid of the item on whatever comes in. Leech Seed is good too, but since we're specifically countering the Landorus, I figure you're either straight up going for the KO or predicting what comes in.

REGULAR LANDORUS IS BETTER

Round 4

676.png

Kyurem @ Life Orb
Modest Nature
EVs: 56 HP / 236 SpA / 216 Spe
-Substitute
-Blizzard
-Earth Power
-Roost

While everyone has been hyping Therians and Keldeo, Kyurem's silently assassinating unprepared teams (read as: a lot). Earth Power and Roost are the two tools it needed to succeed in OU. Now with 50% recovery and the ability to dent Jirachi as well as nuke Heatran, Kyurem is rather hard to counter. But let's see if you can figure it out.

Note: Assume Hail in your calculations.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

Scizor (F) @ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 72 HP / 184 Atk / 252 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Bullet Punch
- U-Turn
- Pursuit
- Superpower

Fairly simple. Come in on anything, Bullet Punch for the guaranteed OHKO after a single round of life orb damage. Substitute does nothing; Kyurem just gets 2HKOed and only gets in one attack. There is no chance of Earth Power or Blizzard 2HKOing after Hail AND hazards damage; so Kyurem's only chance is to freeze on the switch and then have Scizor not thaw out for two turns, which is a 0.192 chance if I'm doing my math correctly. Without Hail or hazards there is a pretty good chance of Kyurem missing the 3HKO as well.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

[animate]437[/animate]
Bronzong @ Light Clay
Levitate, Sassy, 252 HP 252 SpDef 4 Atk
0 Speed IV
- Gyro Ball
- Light Screen
- Reflect
- Earthquake

Man, Kyurem's Blizzard is serious business. I tried using Meloetta-A and Keldeo just to be cool, but they just get wrecked. So I'm going the traditional route here and using Bronzong, one of the only guys able to take Blizzard like a man and not get ruined by Earth Power. With heavy specially defensive investment, Blizzard is a 4hko - not that it'll ever get that far because Gyro Ball takes Kyurem down in two shots. Screens can support the team or just troll Kyurem harder, Earthquake prevents you from getting set up on by Magnezone.

Detailed Result:
252 SpAtk Life Orb Kyurem (+SpAtk) Blizzard vs 252 HP/252 SpDef Bronzong (+SpDef) : 26.92% - 31.95%
4-5 hits to KO (with Leftovers)

Detailed Result:
4 Atk Bronzong Gyro Ball vs 56 HP/0 Def Kyurem: 59.26% - 70.37%
2 hits to KO

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

The main problem with Bronzong and Gyro Ball is that it only has 4 pp against Kyurem. If Earthquake doesn't break the sub (didn't run calc) then Bronzong will just run out of PP and Kyurem will just win.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

[animate]143[/animate]
Snorlax @ Leftovers
Trait: Thick Fat
EVs: 208 HP / 48 Atk / 252 SpD
Nature: Careful (+SpD, -SpA)
-Curse
-Rock Slide
-Return
-Earthquake

This counter is fairly simple. Switch in on either a Substitute or Blizzard (thankfully, Thick Fat helps here), and then Curse to boost Snorlax's Attack. Once Snorlax is boosted, it can guarantee a 2HKO Kyurem with Return (thanks to 48 EVs in Attack), and Kyurem cannot Roost stall a +1 Return from this Snorlax. The rest of the moves are filler, but Rock Slide is helpful to break the Sub, or KO Kyurem if it runs out of Roosts. This Snorlax doesn't need any Defense since Kyurem is a special attacker.

Earth Power vs. Snorlax = 18.51 - 21.83%
Blizzard vs. Snorlax = 18.51 - 22.02% (possible 4HKO after Hail and SR)

+ 1 Return vs. Kyurem = 50.37 - 59.50%
+ 1 Rock Slide vs. Kyurem = 49.87 - 58.76%

Earthquake 17.8% - 21%

Kyurem can easily outstall those Gyro Balls as long as it plays smart with a combination of Sub + Roost. At best Bronzong would be a check.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

BTW, the OP says Kyurme, not Kyurem.

And I don't even know if that Bronzong is a check, since if Kyurem uses up Substitute on the switch, Bronzong gets to hit Kyurem 3 times instead of 4, and then what happens if Bronzong runs out of Gyro Balls? Earthquake is a possible 5HKO (as TDL's calc shows above), which means Kyurem can slowly wear down Bronzong through Hail and Blizzard, and Roost off the Earthquake damage when it needs to.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

fuuuuu I forgot about Pressure

NEVER MIND THEN >:[

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

By switching to a Brave nature and doing 252 hp 252 atk, Bronzong will always break 56 HP Kyurem's subs with Earthquake:

Detailed Result:
255 Atk Bronzong (+Atk) Earthquake vs 56 HP/0 Def Kyurem: 25.19% - 29.63%
4 hits to KO

Blizzard hurts a bit more, of course:

Detailed Result:
252 SpAtk Life Orb Kyurem (+SpAtk) Blizzard vs 252 HP/4 SpDef Bronzong: 36.39% - 42.6%
3 hits to KO

Of course, once he comes in and sets up a screen...

Detailed Result:
252 SpAtk Life Orb Kyurem (+SpAtk) Blizzard vs 252 HP/4 SpDef Bronzong: 18.05% - 21.3%
5-6 hits to KO

Still, I will concede that Bronzong is a check here. I'll think of something better...

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

GG

Blissey @Leftovers
Trait: Natual Cure
Bold Nature
252 HP/252 Def/4 SpDef
~Wish
~Protect
~Seismic Toss
~Toxic

I realize this isn't creative, but it's still the most effective counter. This Kyurem lacks Focus Blast, and Blissey is just going to PP stall the bejeebus out of it. Only reason this is better than Chansey is because Eviolite will mean Chansey loses HP with Hail every turn. I pick this over Specially Defensive Scizor w/ Roost because (I'm pulling a bacon here. You're right btw, it is fun to find a perfect counter using harsh conditions :3) of the Freeze chance and Special Defense drop chance. Even if you happen to freeze Blissey, Natural Cure means you can just switch out and come back in and go lolololol. And the best Special Wall in the game doesn't mind being -1. -2 might have some issues, but at that point, again, you can just switch out.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

Kyurem beats Blissey. Siesmic Toss fails to break the subs (405 HP btw) and Wish and Softboiled can only be used 8 times vs Kyurem.

A lot of you are overlooking the point of SubRoost Kyurem. It's not to dish damage. It's not to sweep. It's to PP Stall. A lot of the moves that usually were problems for Kyurem (Stone Edge, recovery, etc) can be stalled out easily. Half the stuff I've seen posted are all things Kyurem can stall.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

Wish and Softboiled aren't affected by Pressure because they don't target Kyurem.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

Don't forget that Earth Power may lower Special Defense; chances of which are especially likely if you're trying to stall a sub Kyurem, which you are.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

Tyranitar @ Leftovers
Trait: Sand Stream
Nature: Careful
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
~ Stealth Rock
~ Crunch
~ Stone Edge
~ Superpower

Slightly modified from the Smogon analysis, but still a standard Specially Defensive Tyranitar. Stone Edge does (306 - 360) 75.6% - 88.9% to Kyurem which is a 2HKO. If you miss a lot with SE, you have Superpower to finish it off. Because of sandstorm, Kyurem's Earth Power does (102 - 122) 25.2% - 30.2% which is a 4HKO with SR. Blizzard does similarly little damage (102 - 121) 25.2% - 30%. Great counter if you ask me.

RE: Counter That Pokemon! - Round 4

The problem with Tyranitar is that with Pressure, you only get 8 attacks on Kyurem before you run out of Stone Edge and Superpower, forcing you to use Crunch to try and get anywhere.
