RE: Writer's Lounge

It's a natural occurrence for people to post Pokemon fanfics here because this is a Pokemon site after all. However, the Writing Corner is free for anything as long as it consists of writing. There's been a resurgence of poetry lately as well.

RE: Writer's Lounge

Yeah, anything's allowed so long as it's not explicitly adult or too intense for younger readers (hence the whole "no fics over PG-13" policy. I know different countries have different rating systems, but I think the gauge is relatively constant elsewhere as far as general content's concerned).

Anyways, I think I'm going to hold off on group projects and new contests besides what's already going on between the Round-Robin and Haiku Contests until sometime in the future. SR said he doesn't want too many things going on all at once, so I may soon make it so I alternate between the haiku and an open-form (any style allowed, including free verse) poem contest depending on how the next haiku one goes over. Also, I'm going to see if I can arrange a better version of the Writing Guide project I want to try and do, than just working straight from the Writer's Haven template (I'll keep most if not all of it, but I think there may be a few more topics I'd like to have covered; when I get it ready, I'll post a preview of it here).

Anyways, I've got some projects of my own I'm behind on, but the past few days I found odd inspiration from Harold Camping's failed Doomsday predictions from earlier this year (especially since yesterday was supposed to be the end! :p). I've given some thought to doing a short story involving a battle between Arceus and my Legendary Fakemon Otulp (a gigantic phantom wolf, who supposedly stands as Arceus's archnemesis). My idea is that their attacks against one another were so devastating they essentially destroyed anything that got caught in the crossfire, and at one point it almost resulted in global destruction. I'm just wondering if that would sound like a good action thriller or just plain bad since it's basically a whole "wrath of the gods" scenario.

@Apollo

I totally forgot that we were all supposed to die yesterday until you posted it, lol.

I like it how the Writers Corner is actually more active now, nice to see everyones works :)

Good luck on whatever it is your working on Apollo

RE: Writer's Lounge

The only reason I remembered was because a local news channel mentioned it yesterday morning during a broadcast. I'm a little bit of a Doomsday buff, though I don't put much stock in it myself (really, I just draw inspiration from the concept for my stories since both Feral Twilight and Biohazard deal in End-of-Days scenarios; the first taking place before human extinction, and the latter during a time afterwards where Pokemon may be eradicated).

RE: Writer's Lounge

Alright, I finally found the place to ask for some tips, which is awesome. I always have difficulty coming up with ideas for a story, character names, beginnings, etc. Normally I wouldn't even try writing something because I'm terrible in english class, but I have written two creating writing projects; one for fun and one for english class. The one I wrote for fun was just a few chapters and I gave it to some of my friends. They begged me to write more and they said they couldn't wait to find out what happened next. The one I wrote for english class which was just a made up ending for a story we read I left it somewhere and someone who found it said they thought that a professional author had written it, not me. So, I decided I want to write some kind of story, or at least try. I already have an idea for the storyline, but I need some cool character name ideas. Any help?

RE: Writer's Lounge

When you say "cool character names," it's really subjective to what piece you're writing. Can you identify the place/setting of your story first?

RE: Writer's Lounge

Usually I find that common-sounding character names have better essence to them than exotic-sounding ones. But also, like Zy said, it's all subjective.

RE: Writer's Lounge

^ Yeah I agree with that. @Zyflair Place/Setting is a rundown town with everything gone wrong. The electricity barely works, the water is dirty, the houses are crumbling, etc. Later in the story the main characters are going to leave the town and go on some kind of quest to find something.

Also, I have two story ideas. They both revolve around a tournament of some kind. One sort of uses a boxing-like tournament where Pokemon moves and weird super punches are used. The other involves special Pokemon/people (haven't decided yet) being able to transform into one other form and entering a tournament using both forms. Which do you guys think sounds better? I'm leaning toward the two-form one because it would make a better story but I have some really great ideas for the boxing one too.

RE: Writer's Lounge

Never was a fan of any plot involving transforming characters/things, but that's just me. Normal names should do the trick for your story.

RE: Writer's Lounge

I'm a big fan of transformation myself, but the purposes for characters being able to transform should be more expansive than for fighting/boxing/etc. (unless those are just the surface ideas).

RE: Writer's Lounge

They are just the surface ideas, but I was thinking the same thing too. Transforming will be more expansive, but a better storyline.

I'm still deciding, my boxing/fighting story ideas seem really cool but the transforming just seems better.... I'll decide soon and get to work on Ch. 1

RE: Writer's Lounge

Ick, I actually forgot over the past few days... So far I've cleared it with SR that we may be doing this, but he hasn't given me an actual go-ahead. However, if you want, you can start writing a section up that hasn't already been done by someone else from Writer's Haven. For now, this will just have to be a side project...

RE: Writer's Lounge

Sorry to somewhat interrupt your guys conversation, I'm just saying I decided the boxing/fighting story and will begin ASAP.

RE: Writer's Lounge

Getting Started-The Basics of Writing
-Basic Sentence Structure
-Spelling and Grammar
-Common Mistakes on 'They're, There, and There'-like Words
-Creating Your Own Original Character!
-Basic Description (Apollo)

The basic writing section should be a good start, MrGatr. If I recall correctly, Zy did the part on basic sentence structure and I've still got an unfinished draft of Basic Description on my hard drive I'll work on finishing soon.

I'd suggest trying either character creation or Spelling and Grammar if you want. Basically, anything else that DNA didn't post links to is open-game as well, but these would be some of the easiest topics to write about. When you're done, you can either post your subject here for someone to proofread, or just send it to me so I can look it over.

Edit: Yeah, I think that's how we'll do this rather than making it a community-wide project. Anyways who wants to can take a section that hasn't already been written up, work on it, and then post it here for proofreading. If I don't get to it right away, DNA or Zy may if they have a chance and are feeling up to it.

RE: Writer's Lounge

I have a textbook with a giant list of common mistakes people make in word choice.
I'm sure that ya'll (I live in Tennessee, why not use that word?) have some kind of similar reference for such, so I am just throwing it out there that I have such.

RE: Writer's Lounge

"Ya'll" is slang. It's dialect for quite a few regions and is an accepted word. Only thing you have to consider is that people not of these regions using those words would seem out of place.
