RE: Movie Discussion Thread II

The Big Year was SUUUCCH a good movie. I love comedies that have a touching and serious plot. It just makes the small comic relief so much better, especially when it is PG and not inappropriate.
I highly recommend this movie to everyone. The locations it was filmed in were all so stunning. And it has a great cast. Go watch today.

RE: Movie Discussion Thread II

I'm not a huge Dreamworks fan (Pixar FTW) but Puss in Boots was REALLY good. It had the same humor as Shrek, but with a really nice plot and adverterous feel. I liked it a whole lot and I recommend it to any animated movie fan, kid or adult.

RE: Movie Discussion Thread II

Darn, I was hoping Ra.One would make the top 10. Oh well, maybe in the future we'll see an SRK film hit the US top 10.

RE: Movie Discussion Thread II

Ironic because of the recent "success". Pretty sad that one movie does this to a whole studio.

Yikes. I can't wait to see The Muppets Movie. :3

dmaster out.

RE: Movie Discussion Thread II

Bah, okay, I should start posting in this thread since I'm a huge cinephile.

So I saw In Time the other day. You know, the plot was interesting. On paper it should have been just a decent re-imagining of Logan's Run. While watching it, I was still interested in the plot, but I was taken away from the story and my focus instead was on the terrible acting. Justin Timberlake was respectable in The Social Network, Olivia Wilde is usually eh, Amanda Seyfried I've never been impressed with. I wasn't expecting amazing performances from those three. I was more surprised at Vincent Kartheiser's underwhelming performance. After being used to him playing such a stellar role in Mad Men, I was expecting so much more. I could say the same of Cillian Murphy, whom after seeing X-Men Origins earlier this year, I expected to do better with what he was given. I liked the plot, like I said, but the writing and acting just... it was awful. I can't even call this a good re-imagining of Logan's Run. I can call this a really neat idea, but poor execution.

Just as a short tidbit, The Rum Diary was as good as expected. In that it was very, very good.

I just want to say that this movie was FANTASTIC. This is one of the best films I've seen in a very long time. This, along with Drive, alone make 2011 a great year in movies. Michael Shannon is such an amazing actor. I seriously cannot praise this movie enough. Ever since I first heard about it at Sundance back in January I was interested.

RE: Movie Discussion Thread II

I can't believe nobody has said anything about Trollhunter yet. I watched it thinking it was going to be about the equivalent of Thankskilling or Titanic II (a movie so bad you can't help but laugh at it), but it is actually a really good movie. It doesn't try to be anything more than it is, which is just a feel good movie. It has some ridiculous parts, but really that's only because it is based entirely off of Norwegian folklore and children stories (3 goats on a bridge, etc), and even those aren't the kind of things you would laugh at. Don't watch it expecting a blockbuster smash and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Also, Warrior and Rise of the Planet of the Apes deserve some attention as well. Warrior is better than the Fighter, and I loved the Fighter. I went to see it with 7 other guys and we were all pumped up to see some sick MMA fighting, but the story is so deep and the character development is so great that all 8 of us had tears in our eyes at least once. And when I say the character development was great, I mean I have literally NEVER seen character development this good and this rich, including everything I have ever seen on TV (and I am a humongous tv buff). People complain that it's just a movie for brutes and say negative things about it in that regard, but honestly, those people are idiots- this movie isn't for 'brutes', as there really isn't that much fighting, and the fighting isn't even the main point of the movie, the story behind the family is, and it is heartwarming.

As for RotPotA, I thought it looked and sounded horrendous after seeing all of the originals, but this is a fantastic movie. The prequel sets everything up perfectly and you really get into it. The acting is amazing, and that's coming from someone who doesn't necessarily like James Franco or John Lithgow, but they both managed to change my mind in this film. Also, just on pure looks alone this is awesome. Very well done. Again, I see this as a must see.

Anyways, how was Harold and Kumar?

RE: Movie Discussion Thread II

I can understand not liking James Franco, but John Lithgow? I dunno, I've always loved his work. Season 4 of Dexter pretty much bumped him up on my "favorite living actors" list, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes definitely helped.

The Fighter was great. Warrior was outstanding. You have good taste in films my good sir.

Harold and Kumar was pretty decent. I wasn't expecting much going into it but I was somewhat pleasantly surprised. It was the best movie opening this week imo.

The Son of No One was totally awful. So many actors whom I think highly of delivered a great performance, but they're backed up by a script that falls flat on its face, uninspired directing, shoddy editing, and a disappointing conclusion. I really expected more.

Looking forward to J.Edgar this week, but maybe that's because I'm a huge Clint Eastwood fan more than anything else. Immortals also looks promising. Not many weeks until my personal most-awaited movie, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
