Chapter Four: Nightshade!
Chris was in his hotel room in Lilycove. He was living what had become his day-to-day life.
It was about nine at night, and he was preparing for bed.
Suddenly, he heard someone walking in his room! His wife had left yesterday for a shopping spree in Rustboro, and now he was spooked. He walked onto his balcony to see if anyone was there, and there wasn’t.
He turned around to go inside and walked into someone!
“AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!” screamed Chris in fear.
The man was a few inches shy of six feet, wore a black trench coat and one shoulder seemed to be pointed.
“Hey step-daddy,” replied the figure.
“MAX!” Chris said in shock.
Max grabbed him by the collar and slammed him into the wall.
“What in the name of Arceus is going on?!?” he demanded of his stepfather.
“What do you mean what’s going on?”
“Don’t play coy with me! I almost got shot down flying over Pallet Town!”
“Of all people, you should know better.”
“I’ve been in the year four hundred B.C. for fifteen years, so tell me what happened and why the NPZ doesn’t exist anymore!”
Chris realized Max must’ve taken the reign of Master from his father. Chris sat Max down and told him everything that he knew.
“So I left and the world is destroyed,” said Max, disappointed in himself.
“Look, Max,” said Chris, “You weren’t here, you couldn’t have done anything. And if you feel that guilty about it, do something now.”
“How? PMC is gone, Rich is a fugitive…where is Lindsey?”
Chris got up and walked away.
“Chris,” Max said impatiently, “Where is she?”
“Most believe she’s involved with Cody…I personally don’t, but he’s been supposedly “protecting” her…”
Cody had gone home. He was preparing for the day ahead, when he would launch an all-out attack on the resistance.
Suddenly, a bone the size of a femur came crashing though his window and cracked him in the face, busting his forehead open.
Then, a masked man came lunging into the room and pinned Cody onto his desk, then whipped a knife at his head, literally going into the desk micrometers away from his skull.
“Who are you?” Cody asked, barely conscious.
“You listen and listen good,” said the man, who had a very deep voice that was clearly being altered by some sort of device, “I am Nightshade. You’ve had your fun for far too long. You have four days to surrender or I promise, I WILL kill you, understand?”
Sirens blared outside as red and blue lights flashed everywhere. Nightshade jumped out the window, and disappeared.
“So Shane,” said Gabby to her guest on her show, “What can you tell us about this attack on Cody?”
“Well,” said Shane, “We know this: Cody’s home was broken into. He was clubbed in the head, and suffered a concussion. A knife was found in his desk only a hair away from his head. Whoever this “Nightshade” man is intended to threaten him into doing something, but Cody lost consciousness before he could tell us what. So people, reinforce your windows and lock your doors, these IS a maniac loose!”
Jason clicked off the television.
He was a little nervous. He had never led a battle before, at least not one of this caliber. What if he made a wrong choice? Attacked at the wrong time? So many questions ran through his head.
And now this Nightshade guy. Whose side is he on? Is the attack a fake? Or is he on their side? Or possibly, he’s fighting for personal gain?
“Jason?” said Ricky as he knocked on his door.
“Hey,” said Jason.
“This doesn’t look good.”
“I know…but remember fifteen years ago? We thought we’d never end that war, and we all pulled through…I know this looks bad, but I know we can get through it.”
“Well, we have faith in you, Jason…all of us. And remember, even if you screw up, you can fix it, and we’ll be there to help!”
“I know, and I appreciate that.”
Max had just gotten back to Chris’ hotel room, and Chris yelled, “Are you crazy?”
“What?” asked Max.
“You are all over the news about this “Nightshade” guy!”
“So? I’ve been eluding people for fifteen years to make sure my name stays out of the history books. They’ll never get me. Did you get the information?”
“Yes, and I still don’t see why we have to do this.”
“You are going to stay here. I am going to do this. He bailed me out several times, and now it’s time to return the favor.”
Not long, but it was intended to bring back an old favorite of mine
