Star Wars - "Episode VII: The Force Awakens", spin-off movies & "Rebels"

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

I think it's a little early to call the story of a show that has only aired it's pilot episode bad.

RE: Star Wars - "Episode VII" and "Rebels" Discussion Thread

Just going by the Clone Wars, it's not early to say it since in terms of story, the CW started bad and ended up that way (at least the animation was better with each season). In the Rebels' case, the inclusion of Ezra as one of the Ghost's crew was rushed and stupid due to the purple lemur. Not only that and apparently because there can't be an episode (or more than three) without igniting a lightsaber, the old Sith vs Jedi thing had to come, with the Jedi revealing himself as such and the Inquisitor being called. I was expecting some five episodes until Ezra joined the gang and we would get to see Ezra's survival in Lothal, while more of the Jedi's life without igniting a lightsaber and living aboard the ship.

As yet another proof of the purple's lemur stupidity despite being refered as smart, he beated Ezra when he was wearing an Imperial helmet because of said helmet. After all, smart people only see helmets in front of their eyes, and the lack of amour and height doesn't matter.

Here's an interesting thought: What if the three "spinoffs" were actually a mini-trilogy. The first one would be based around Count Dooku and his time as a Jedi, fighting in the war against the Mandolorians. The only Mandolorian in the war to survive was Jango Fett, which leads us into our second movie, about Jango Fett. This movie could talk about his missions right up to Coursaunt where he assassinated the shape-shifter lady. The last movie could revolve around Boba Fett that would take place between episodes 3-4 (or 6-7 if he actually did survive).

I certainly wouldn't mind (on the contrary) to see a movie focused on Dooku but two about bounty hunters!? :S Ventress' background/added details will be the subject of a comic book, so perhaps a third spinoff movie more about the war and starring an ARC trooper.

All this said, I think I've read that the spinoffs will be about characters of the new movies or more background on people from the time of the Empire.

Unfortunately what you've described has already been done in a video game (Star Wars Bounty Hunter).

Also you're incorrect about Jango being the only Mandalorian to survive the war. The Mandalorian War was fought in the time of the Old Republic, centuries before the events of Episode I. Dooku never fought against Mandalorians and his time as a Jedi was in the peaceful times of the Republic, amongst the odd terrorist attack or two.

Boba did survive Episode VI but that is only explored through comic series. It's unlikely that they'll bring him back to screen for that reason.

Boba Fett's survival is explored in the EU novels, too, though both novels and comics are no longer canon, so the new team can do anything they want.

If one is to appear, I expect them to create a new Bounty Hunter and not bring back Boba. I'm sick of those T-shaped visors. The clone troopers had them because of their Mandalorian heritage but the Republic soldiers in SWTOR also have for no other reason than familiarity.

Teaser! :D

I didn't liked the new blade design when ignited...seems too much like flames) and the guy roaming through a forest and X-wing on the lake (scenario and stunt) reminded me of Harry Potter movies.

The new Stormtrooper's helmet seems good and I hope they focus some story on them too, which it seems it'll happen with that black character (sorry, I don't know which one is who).

Aside from that I enjoyed it.

The hype is palpable. Got goosebumps when the music played.

Multiple rewatches and I'm still back-and-forth on the lightsaber. I'm sure there's a reason for it, but the new blade style was definitely unexpected. It looks cool, but I'll wait to see how things play out.

I thought that and I'm hoping that it might be due to the guy being a lone Sith that hasn't yet mastered the skills, namely the blade's construction!

I hope they won't use the blak guy as comic relief like they did it in the trailer. As a matter of fact, I don't want a comic relief character at all....well, aside from C3PO and R2D2. :p

I'm sorry but the first half of the trailer just looked like something you'd see on SNL. Random Sweaty guy jumping out of nowhere? Robots on Soccer Balls? The X-Wing Scene and The Falcon Scene somewhat redeemed it but I think this is a farewell to the classic Star Wars that we all love and know.

About the robot, that was my first thought but I think that the ball is indeed part of its locomotion.

I hated the Falcon scene for one thing: the camera movement makes me dizzy and I hate when movies and games with ships and flying creatures do that. Also, at some point it seemed like the camera was wrongly placed.

This is just a teaser so let's wait for the actual trailer.

RE: Star Wars - "(Episode VII): The Force Awakens" (teaser) & "Rebels" Discussion Thread

I wonder how Star Wars fans would react to the idea of Episode VII being titled, "The Midi-chlorians Awaken" instead of "The Force Awakens"? It probably wouldn't have been a good sales pitch considering how The Phantom Menace ruined the mystery behind the Force however it didn't bother me as much going into Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith which was actually my favorite out of the prequels while I still consider the original trilogy a masterpiece that will never be equaled.

Considering how much CGI was put into the prequels I don't think The Force Awakens will live up to the hype of the original trilogy due to the authenticity of the Jim Henson puppetry that made the original Star Wars experience truly magical where as the prequels and Episode VII lacks that sense of imagination that kept you guessing what was real as the CGI itself gives you a clear distinction between the fictional characters and the real actors being portrayed in the films before rolling the film credits at the end.

If I had to summarize my likes and dislikes on each movie...
TPM - I watch it because of Qui-Gon Jin and the music when the Droid Army appears and during the duel with Maul.
AotC - I'll never watch that soap opera again and I used to mistake the title as "The Clones Wars" but while I don't mistake it anymore I still can't say the true name (I know it has "Clones" on it but the first name I can't remember).
RotS - I recorded that on a VHS tape when it was transmitted on television andthe first part of the movie before the commercials end with the landing of Grievous' ship, which is the only part that makes me put the tape on the player because Order 66 at first seemed like something that made me feel pity about them and now I think "that's what happens when five Jedi masters - Yoda included - sit in front of the Sith Lord and happily chat with him, so you deserve death because even in your face you wouldn't recognize Death". -_-

The original trilogy - I watch it because it's a product of a certain age, when there wasn't CGI and things were still done and in a great way so a proof that good work can be done...oh yeah and no midi-chlorians and a Chosen One that is nothing more than a brat and also a liar that treats his wife like a spoiled child with a toy that ends up broking it so no one else can play with it, only to end up being the boy toy of a suspicious old man.

“Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Publishing Program Coming Fall 2015
Announcing a new series of books and comics that will lead into Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

Disney Publishing Worldwide and Lucasfilm announced today an ambitious publishing programming, “Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which will lead into the highly-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, coming December 18. Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, kicking off this fall, is planned to include more than 20 titles available in print and digital, and will feature new narrative stories for middle grade and young adults as well as comics, illustrated reference, Look and Find, and sticker book formats. Stories are set to star characters old and new, and retell classic Star Wars tales from new perspectives.
“We are thrilled to be developing content for fans of this epic saga across the globe,” said Andrew Sugerman, executive vice president, Disney Publishing Worldwide. “The robust publishing program will appeal to a range of fans — old and new — across all formats from comics to novels to apps, making this one of the most exciting and collaborative collection of stories that we’ve seen to date.“
All titles published under Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be canonical within the Star Wars universe, and in-continuity with the Star Wars films, animated series, new books, and Marvel comics. The global program comes as a result of a massive collaboration between Disney-Lucasfilm and its publishing partners, including Del Rey, DK, Egmont UK, Marvel, Phoenix International Publications, Inc., Studio Fun International, and Topps.
“The filmmakers have a lot of surprises in store, and the hints and puzzle pieces in the publishing program will keep fans guessing until the film opens. Until then, let the anticipation — and the speculation — begin,” said Michael Siglain, director, Creative Franchise, Lucasfilm, Disney Publishing Worldwide.
Novels for young adults, focusing on Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia, will be published by Disney-Lucasfilm Press in North America and distributed internationally. The young adult novels have notable talent attached, including Cecil Castellucci (Boy Proof, Tin Star), Greg Rucka, New York Times bestselling author (Detective Comics and 52), Jason Fry (The Clone Wars: Darth Maul: Shadow Conspiracy, Star Wars Insider contributor) and New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray (The Firebird trilogy and Evernight series).
Some book and comic titles have been revealed, and they offer fans a fun glimpse into the possible stories within: Star Wars: Aftermath (Del Rey), Lost Stars (Disney-Lucasfilm Press), Smuggler’s Run: A Han Solo Adventure (Disney-Lucasfilm Press), The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure (Disney-Lucasfilm Press), Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure (Disney-Lucasfilm Press), Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know (DK), Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens (Marvel Comics), Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens-C-3PO (Marvel Comics), and Star Wars: Ships of the Galaxy (Studio Fun International).

Rogue One Is the First Star Wars Stand-Alone Film, Rian Johnson to Write and Direct Star Wars: Episode VIII

This morning at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, across the street from Lucasfilm, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger hosted a shareholder meeting where he announced news regarding the first Star Wars stand-alone movie as well as Star Wars: Episode VIII.
Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.
In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce, and J.J. Abrams will serve as executive producer.

Disney sure is eager to keep the flow of interest going, at least after the first movie is released because those books and comics coming only this Fall is a bit of a shame, because until then we'll have little.

Huh, interesting. Rogue One/Leader is the callsign for the leader of Rogue Squadron, one of the starfighter groups of the Rebel Alliance. I'm pretty sure the only remaining canon Rogue Leaders are Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles, both being leaders of the squadron at various points in the original trilogy. So, it's kind of a toss up being whether Luke or Wedge will be the focus. The immediate thought is, of course, Luke, though it's an interesting decision to have him be the star of something that's not about anything related to being a Jedi. Wedge has a lot of interesting stories in the Legends EU via the X-Wing novels and others, though I'm hesitant to think Disney will want to touch the Legends EU with a 10-foot-pole because of the can of worms it would open up, so if it really is Wedge, it'll probably be completely different to his EU stuff.

I would like to see Wedge forming the New Republic planetary/starfighter forces. I think the Clone Wars' animation was nice because of the focus placed on Infantry and land combat, so it would be nice to see new designs and more about the starships and the new Navy.
Luke's story will be obviously Jedi related, Han about leaving out smuggling, and so I would like to see Leia being the new Amidala and see the new Coruscant after the Imperial rule.

Disney won't touch any can of worms because most likely there's nothing left now in the eyes of Disney, other than their work, namely what comes ahead.

Alexandre Desplat to Score ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff ‘Rogue One’

Alexandre Desplat revealed in an interview on Radio Classique’s Culture Club that he will be reuniting with director Gareth Edwards on the upcoming Star Wars spinoff feature Rogue One. Felicity Jones is attached to star in the film, which is scripted by Chris Weitz (Cinderella, The Golden Compass). No plot details have been revealed yet, but the movie is said to be the first in a series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Kathleen Kennedy (Jurassic Park, The Sixth Sense, Lincoln) and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are producing the Lucasfilm production. What happened after Endor? Find out in Star Wars: Aftermath

By now, I hope you’ve all read or heard about our exciting new publishing program that was announced earlier this week: “The Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” (And if you haven’t, go read about it here.) We’ll be releasing about 20 books this fall, some of which take place right after the end of Return of the Jedi. The books — which range from activity books for kids to comics and novels for adult fans — will contain hints about The Force Awakens, including new starships, planets, characters, and subtle clues about what happened to our heroes in the months following the Battle of Endor. Right now I’m excited to tell you about Del Rey’s contribution to the program: the novel Star Wars: Aftermath.
I’m also excited to share with you that Aftermath will be written by Chuck Wendig, the critically-acclaimed author of Blackbirds, Mockingbird, Under the Empyrean Sky, and many other novels, as well as countless blog posts about the craft and business of writing. We’re thrilled that he agreed to work on this epic new project with us.
The second Death Star has been destroyed. Rumors are flying that the Emperor and his enforcer, Darth Vader, are dead. A new government is forming to replace the Empire. But the galaxy is a big place, and the fallout of this cataclysm will affect different worlds in different ways. Does everyone accept the fall of Imperial rule? Has everyone even heard the life-altering news? What rushes in to fill the vacuum the Empire has left? And who will try to stop them? Those are some of the themes we’ll be exploring in Aftermath, and as a lifelong Star Wars fan, just writing those words gives me chills. I can’t wait for our first canon glimpse into the state of the galaxy after the Battle of Endor.
What’s more, Aftermath will be the first book in a trilogy that begins to bridge the Star Wars timeline between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. There is so much unknown between the Battle of Endor and the events of The Force Awakens, and we’re excited to take our first step into that space.
Obviously I wish I could tell you more about the story, but I can’t just yet. What I can reveal is that you will be introduced to a sweeping new cast of characters, along with a fan favorite from the films. And who knows what other familiar faces will pop up along the way? And once you’ve seen The Force Awakens in movie theaters, you may find that certain names and places in Aftermath have a relevance you never knew — so keep your eyes wide open!
