Talkin' Baseball: The MLB Discussion Thread

It's kind of hard to judge this early in the season, but it appears there's no dominant team or vast favorite to win the World Series right now. We've seen some teams who made big offseason moves falter thus far (Jays, Angels), and other teams off to a good start which we didn't expect (Red Sox, Rangers, Mets).

The grind will come for those hot-starting teams, and they may crumble. All but Texas. I think the Rangers could steal the thunder from the Angels (if they haven't done so already).

Meanwhile the A's are still currently tied with the Rangers for first. Ultimately I think it will be a very close race until the end for the AL West between the A's, Rangers, and Angels. I think the A's win it and the Angels get in the playoffs via the Wild Card.

I think we'll get the Blue Jays, Tigers and Rangers as the Division Winners, with the Orioles and Angels being the Wild Cards.

(With the Angels beat Oakland in a one-game playoff, if that's at all possible anymore...)

For the National League; the Nationals, Cardinals and Giants winning their respective Divisions, with the Reds and the Dodgers being the two NL Wild Cards.

There have been many surprises this week with teams that weren't supposed to do well, with what happened on the offseason, doing well while some teams that were supposed to do well doing bad.

Orioles, Tigers and A's would be who I think will win their divisions while Rangers and Rays go for the WC.

Phillies will make a surprise to win the NL East (by like 3 games), Cardinals and Dodgers. Reds and Braves for the WC.

Interesting that you have the Cards winning the division over the Reds; as a Cardinals fan, I admit the Reds have a better team this year, but the games aren't played on paper.

AL West: A's
AL Central: Tigers
AL East: Jays
Wild Card: Angels, Red Sox

NL West: Dodgers
NL Central: Reds
NL East: Nats
Wild Card: Braves, Cards

Well, I think STL/CIN are interchangeable as Division Winner/Wild Card.

Well, looks like the Jays experiment isn't working... That offense is good enough, but the thing that pushed them over the top as World Series contenders in the preseason was pitching additions. Now, the pitching is not there, with Josh Johnson not able to adjust to the AL so far, Dickey still sucking in his return to the AL, and with Morrow struggling a bit after a promising season last year. Marlins 2.0

This was AA's gamble up there in Toronto. And so far, he's coming up snake-eyes.

At least he tried. Meanwhile, other franchises like the Cubs, Padres, Twins, and Pirates struggle year after year because they can't make that big offseason move.

The Kansas City Royals made quite a few good moves this off season. Reaching out and getting our #1 pitcher James Shields was excellent, as well as our #1 pitcher last year isn't even in the rotation anymore and is playing as a very strong reliever. I'm hopeful for the Royals to have a better season then they have been in the past. 6-2 to start the season and currently on a 4 game winning streak about to take on a Toronto team at Kaufman Stadium. The Blue Jays struggled today, I'm not sure what happened, getting beat by a quality Tigers team 11-1 is still unacceptable.

But, it's been 20 years since Toronto's been relevant because they plodded along like all those teams you mentioned.

Zack Greinke will be out for a while after sustaining a broken collarbone in his brawl with Carlos Quentin. Shame.

Rangers and A's are fighting the AL West. The rest of the West is doing pretty bad. The Angels are below 300. while the Astros and Seattle are below 400. The last 2 isn't very surprising but the Angles doing horrible is something no one saw coming.

Greinke never got in brawls when he was on the Brewers >:[

This is a crippling injury for the Dodgers, Greinke will be out for a while.

Carlos Quentin will be suspended, but not for as long as Greinke will be out.

I can see someone on the Dodgers hitting him as payback for injuring Greinke.

Well, despite picking the Dodgers to win the division, I think the NL West is the Giants' to lose now. Greinke is only one player on a talented Dodgers team, obviously, but the Giants are no slouches themselves. Looks like both LA teams are in for some adversity this season.

Funny enough, after a day or two break, the Dodgers and Padres have another series, although I think Quentin's suspension will cause him to miss it.

Jose Reyes had to be carted off the field today after sustaining what is being called a left ankle sprain. The injury looked much worse in real time after sliding into second base. And the problems just keep piling up for the Jays.

You know what they say; when it rains, it pours. The Jays estimate Reyes will be out anywhere from 1 to 3 months.
