Hamachi is a program that let's you join groups to exchange IPs and such. It's great for small Minecraft servers and Redshark.

https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx

To play multiplayer you need the full, paid, version (unless someone knows how to make a free-version server). Either via IP exchange or Hamachi, go to the Multiplayer option on the main menu, put in the IP of the server, and hit join. Some servers have a whitelist (meaning you can't join unless your account name is verified). The minecraft forums have a huge list of servers with and without whitelist. Be careful of PvP servers. They allow fighting in them, so other players with diamond swords can beat up newbies for their items.

ok thanks could you suggest any servers for me though?

I can't name any off the top of my head. A few Google searches should find some that you like :>

Update! Notch posted on his Twitter that he might update the game tomorrow. Just a few bug fixes (such as the infamous shadows).

Would someone who trusts me be so kind as to give me the pass to their account for 5 minutes so I can get on the offline mode of the paid version?

Or are you not allowed to go on multiplayer in offline mode? If so, ignore my request. :p

do you have hamachi?

Well, yes, but not on the machine that I play Minecraft on. Plus, it hasn't been working at all recently. :/

No, you are not. :(

Question: Isn't Hamachi free? Or am I reading that wrong? That could explain why my Hamachi stopped working... Maybe I had a trial version.

I really do enjoy PvP servers. I played on one before 1.8, but after the release, Mulitplayer has been really unstable. My LAN Server is running fine, but just about everyone else's server is lagging for me. So, I'm just waiting for Notch/Jeb to stabilize it a little more, as it was not acting this way before the update.

You cannot make servers on the free version, but you can go onto others' servers. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here.

Hamachi is usually free - I interpreted that he was referring to the 'free' version of Minecraft (also known as the unintended hack). ;D
I admit to having that. xD

Hey, Jeb released a 1.9 preview. You can Download it through his Twitter. Those new Nether mobs look amazing! :O

Hmph. Not only did they not fix the shadow bugs, but I can't find that new Nether mob, bridges, or the NPCs in the village I'm in (unless it's because I altered it before the update...). And I can't find a snow biome either >:[

I think you need to start a new world. And the Nether Mobs only spawn in the Nether bridges/stronghold/thingys. I think. The Lava Slimes might spawn elsewhere.

I do know that NPCs will not spawn in pre-existing villages.

I thought so. And I just found out that there are 2 new Nether mobs. I knew about the Netherhold (that's what strongholds are called in the Nether) mob, but I didn't know there were slimes until I went down there myself a few minutes ago :p

New servers keep failing for me. I've been entering the game, then suddenly dying, losing all my items and respawning in the middle of nowhere. :/

I have had some fatal errors, some pretty comical. So I've screenshotted a few.
Stuff like walking through Skeletons and Zombies without losing any hearts, random floating squids and Creepers, and the other players knowing I'm dead before I do. Oh, also, invincible sheep. They've annoyed me A LOT.
