I didn't say anything was wrong with dolphins, just that anyone who appreciates any animal at all should have no problem opening their eyes a little wider and seeing that they're
all gorgeous. Every single hair and contour on every known animal is part of a precise, orderly pattern (exactly what the human brain interprets as beauty to begin with) and the only reason anyone ever finds any organism gross or ugly is a lack of understanding of it. Not to mention, it's just naturally easier for people to hate things with little reason than to see why they should like more things
And don't even get me started on the horrible attitudes people have towards sharks. Shark attacks are phenomenally rare, and marine ecosystems would perish without such apex predators.
Dolphins are in fact much more violent creatures than sharks, territorially killing other animals whether or not they intend to eat them, and in fact, dolphins seldom kill sharks for defense; sharks don't pose a big threat to them, as most sharks eat far smaller fish or prey that is already injured. Nonetheless, dolphins will gang up and slaughter sharks who are minding their own business, then "play" with the corpses, not even eating them. Bull dolphins will also force females, young, and even other animal species to mate with them before beating them to death. This exact behavior has been killing weaker porpoise species in great numbers; biologists have been at a loss to explain what motivates them to do this stuff, or why they so rarely turn against humans, though that's not completely unheard of...there's just only been a single human death by dolphin, and he was believed to have provoked it while drunk
They're still just animals, being animals, and still beautiful too..but there are no "good" or "bad" animals. All animals just try to survive, and that includes a lot of behavior that we would see as savage and cruel. The popular image of dolphins as only gentle, playful, friendly "good guys" is environmentally harmful, scientifically inaccurate, and downplays how remarkable they are as pack-hunting killers, the wolves of the sea. They even use their sonar as a pain-inducing, paralyzing weapon! Terrifyingly awesome.
Sharks deserve the same respect and love as any sea-mammal, and are currently at far greater risk of extinction due to merciless overfishing and the barbaric practice of finning; people catch sharks, cut their fins off, and then dump the rest to slowly starve to death, unable to swim properly.
EDIT/ oh...I guess I totally did get started on the bad rep of sharks
I don't mean to sound animal obsessed to mentally damaged levels, it's just, like, my main joy in life and I hope to eventually be a biology teacher!
