Just for the cheap sleeves? Sleeves don't cost that much. But some people do prefer English cards to Japanese cards. I personally have no preference, but the Japanese card backs are appealing.

To get Gallade and Infernape Lv.X why not just buy the Japanese battle packs?

Yes, on the defending Pokemon. You're not your own Defending Pokemon. The Defending Pokemon is defined as "Your opponent's active Pokemon during your attack" (as per the rulebook). And also.... 400TH POST! W00T!!!!1!111!!!
