RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

IMO you don't need to run those EVs in sp.attack because you lose power on you physical attacks and Gliscor is going to take a hit when it switches to Mienshao or take the Stealth Rock damage. I know it gets Poison Heal but I would still go 252 atk 252 spe.

Mienshao needs jolly. Without it, its too slow. Hi Jump Kick is such a powerful move that even without adamant it will do a ton of dmaage. And, I think Stone Edge/Rock Slide is needed because it lets you KO Chandelure, a common switch in.

I hardly ever see Chandelure, any way. IMO, the only thing Fake Out is good for would be good for is breaking Focus Sashes, so it's probably viable to run both Stone Edge and HP Ice.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Like people say, Gliscor may be a threat, but if I invest in Sp. Atk, I'll have to sacrifice more Attack and Speed, making it unable to counter other Pokemon than just Gliscor. Besides, I'm not usually lucky when it comes to IVs. :(

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Er, don't know what calcs you guys are doing, but if Mienshao has a Life Orb, Naive nature and no Satk investment, it will OHKO max HP Gliscor after Stealth Rock damage and has a decent chance of doing so even if it's at full HP. Not that the full HP thing matters too much because it's probably switching into a Hi Jump Kick or Stone Edge anyway.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I'm just saying that if you use Mienshao as a lead, they'll switch to Gliscor Turn 1 while you Fake Out. You won't have Stealth Rock up. And a lot of teams have Rapid Spinners, so Stealth rock isn't a guarentee. I like the extra reliability.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Is the Ring Target even remotely useful for any Pokemon? Removing an immunity seems so harmful that there must surely be some sort of gimmick or else there would be no reason to include it in the game.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Well, its definitely a gimmicky item. But it can be cool with Trick, tricking your opponent's spin blocker the Ring Target, removing its immunity to Rapid Spin, as well as Fighting moves.

But yeah, gimmick.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I believe this is the right thread to ask this: Is there any use for a Bold nature Regigigas?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Not that I can think of, there's not much reason for Regigigas to run a defensive, specially attacking set.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

^I asked cuz I captured my Platinum Regigigas without taking a synchronizer with me to Snowpoint Temple and it came with a Bold Nature. At the time, I didn't worry much about it, but now I regret it a bit...

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Do you think Latios is a good pokemon to use in competitive battling? I know soul dew is banned but isn't it still a great pokemon to use as a special sweeper?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Latios is a fantastic Pokemon to use in competitive battling. It can take the role of a set up sweeper, a wall-breaker, Choice Specs swepper, Choice Specs revenge killer and a Dual Screen lead. Its sitting comfortably in the Top 10 most used Pokemon in Gen. 5 as of right now.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Psyshock is a specific move recommendation for Latios because this allows it to defeat Chansey and Blissey who otherwise can wall it all day.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

On the Smogon analysis for Offensive Volcarona, it lists Life Orb as the only item option. Is there a major drawback to using Lefites? What I'm really getting at is: are there any key O/2HKOs that +1 Volcarona misses without a Life Orb?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I'd say it really only matters when you don't have a Quiver Dance up. I'm too lazy to do Calcs, but if you're going to run Offensive Volcarona, might as well use Life Orb, although don't see any major drawbacks. Defensive Volcarona is a much better option, though.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

I agree, but the team is build around setting up hazards and the like, in order to get a clean, easy Volcarona sweep with only one Quiver Dance up.

How good is Hydreigon when it comes to OU play compared to dragons like Latios, Latias, Salamence and ScarfHaxorus? He seems a bit left out. Plus, what would be a good set for it if it went Specs? Life Orb?

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

(inb4 ninja)In my opinion Hydreigon is what would happen if Latios traded lots of Speed, a little Special Attack, plenty of Special Defense, Dark/Ghost weakness and access to Recover and Psyshock for more evenly distributed bulk, better mixed attacking stats, Fighting/Bug weakness, Fire Blast, Focus Miss, U-Turn, Taunt, and many Physical moves.

RE: The Competitive Battling Questions Thread

Hydreigon is... alright my OU standards. Its a great Pokemon, but with all the other dragons in OU, its hard for him to not be inferior to other dragons.

This is a set that only Hydreigon can perform, and its very effective.

Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Modest Nature
EVs - 4 HP/252 SpA/252 Speed
-Draco Meteor
-U Turn
-Taunt
-Fire Blast

What makes this set cool is that its hard for Blissey to stop it. She takes about 40% from a Draco Meteor. Then you Taunt to stop her from recovering, and U turn away (causing 17% damage). Once all this has been done, factoring Leftovers into the equation, Blissey will be at about 52% health left. Basically, the next time Blissey comes in to Hydreigon, she dies.

Due to the awkward speed, base 98, Hydreigon loves paralysis support. Jirachi can cause paralysis with Body Slam, and can use Wish to keep Hydreigon healthy. Something to stop the fighting types, like a Jellicent, Reuniclus, or Gyarados will also help.

Specs Hydreigon is outclassed by Latios, due to the larger speed and special attack. While Latios is Pursuit weak, Hydreigon is weak to Mach Punch, a very common form of priority. Its kind of a trade off. I'd also say that Latios does Life Orb better, due to access to Recover, as well as the higher special attack and speed.

If you really want to, a Specs or Life Orb Hydreigon look the exact same, with a different item.

Hydreigon @ Life Orb/Choice Specs
Timid Nature
EVs - 4 HP/252 SpA/252 Speed
-Draco Meteor
-U Turn
-Surf
-Fire Blast
