RE: The official Super Smash Bros Brawl thread.
Here's why Marth isn't broken:
1. Marth's Counter may last longer than Roy's, but it does a set amount of damage. From a fully charged Flare Blade to a poisoned Pichu's A attack, Marth will counter them both for the same amount of damage and knock the opponent back just as far. Good luck killing your opponent with just Counter anyway. Smart players will recognize a Counter-happy player and screw him royally by [chain] throwing him, or either charge their smash attacks a little longer so Counter runs out or just wait out Counter, then they get splattered across the room.
2. It actually takes a lot of skill to consistently slam the enemy with the tip of Marth's sword. People who just mash the C-stick like a crazed maniac aren't going to get very far. People who do nothing but smashes are going to get equally not as far, since all you really need to do is get one dodge in and then cream him while he's doing his move. I've never heard of anyone winning by just spamming smashes. That's really stupid. You would think that just swinging wildly, you'd either miss (trying to hit with the very tip), or hit them with the middle or end of the sword.
3. Just because a character is good at edgeguarding doesn't mean he's broken. I also don't think this really matters because any person who sucks with Marth so badly that he has to spam smashes to win isn't going to be smart enough to know how to edgeguard correctly. This goes for anyone.
4. Just because he has a sword, that automatically means he can't have good recovery? Samus and Jigglypuff are both KINGS of recovery. But Samus has that bulky suit, she shouldn't be able to do that, and Jigglypuff can kill anyone at like 25% with Rest, he shouldn't have such awesome recovery. :/ Sounds ridiculous, right? That's cause it is. Using the forward B to assist in recovery is actually a pretty good idea; it actually makes his recovery way better, better than just air jumping and doing up B and praying you'll hit the edge (which isn't gonna happen because for all intents and purposes, it may as well go straight up). Saying Marth should have a bad recovery because he uses a sword is like saying Nana should just run off the edge and die if she loses her partner, since she is weakened while by herself.
