What Can Be Done to Improve PokeBeach Forums?

I had an idea to promote some discussion in the TCG section.

What if we implemented a TCG Gym Challenge, similar to the VG Gym Challenge currently happening? We'd have a bunch of players that could challenge and practice to become better, and it would help the overall skill level of the people in the TCG section. It would also make the Gym more active. The Gym Leaders, I'm guessing, would be Futachimaru, Serperior, Celebi23, Mudkip, ESP, Zero, King Arceus, and Gale. The matches could be best 2/3, and then players can challenge similarly to the VG Gym Challenge (threads where people can challenge).

This is just an idea, but I thought it could be pretty interesting. Would this be considered?

Love it. I think its a great idea.

@KA: That's fine, and it is completely understandable. And the moderators aren't the only ones who can be GLs: we have a bunch of Professors and regular members who have the potential to be Gym Leaders.

My only problem with that is if we all had a "specialty" like the Gym Leaders, it would be incredibly easy to counter our decks. If my specialty was Electric/Colorless, for example, it would be pretty obvious that I'm playing Zekrom/Tornadus. We could use playstyles as a specialty for the TCG Gym Leaders instead.

I dunno, I feel like the reason that hasn't worked in the past is number one, a lot of TCG moderators are busy with other stuff. The reason it works for VG mods is because they don't have to go to tournaments, actually playtest with other people, etc. Our TCG section is way more active than our VG section. We would be getting so many requests to do battles on a daily basis. Not only that, but like I said, it might be difficult to structure. Believe me, I like the idea, I'm just not sure if we could execute it properly.

Who says TCG leaders need a specialty?

TCG isn't as vast and varied in what you can do as much as VG is, so if this system is implemented, I don't think specialty should be a requirement. However, I do think it should be a requirement that each gym leader runs a different deck (though whether or not that spreads over to variants, I cannot say).

Also, long games can take even an hour or more. That is a significant amount of time per game.

If they don't have a specialty then I don't see why we need a Gym Challenge kind of system. The whole point of a Gym Challenge is to vary things and make things interesting. Why can't people just approach us and ask if we want to play them over PlayTCG instead?

Who said there had to be a specific deck you were playing? A certain play style would probably work better.

But yeah, there are some obvious differences, and a lot of the TCG mods have other things to do. And a best 2/3 playing style doesn't have to work that way; even donks could be okay, if there is a reasonable re-challenging time. So yeah, I'm not sure if we could execute something properly, however, we could take small steps towards something like this (possibly challenges with long periods of time to re-challenge, or possibly less Gym leaders).

Edit: Lotsa ninjas. Anyway, @Gale, I just thought it would be a fun way to create some more activity for TCG (even though we have quite a bit of activity anyway). If this isn't the way to create some more activity, then that's fine.

I think a somewhat better way to do this is maybe have a Swiss-structured tournament of mods vs. members or something. That's something that I've tossed around in my head for quite a while, but I dunno if it's something people would be interested in.

That's also cool.

(Someone should sticky this thread)

And the participating mods would be the same? (Futachimaru, Serperior, Celebi23, Mudkip, ESP, Zero, and Gale).

If you could get one more it would be better.

We could get staff in general to do it. Contributors and TCG Mods. Futachimaru, Serperior, Celebi23, Mudkip, ESP, Zero, myself, Brisk Cakers, and HenryP. That's nine people, so I would like to maybe find a tenth.

I'd like to do Swiss rather than single-elim. I just wish we had more people on the staff side to use.

That would be pretty cool. I'd play as one of the members. Swiss sounds better in general, though. You know, there are Professors as well. They might want to play (not suggesting them - just didn't want to leave them out).

Haha, I had this same idea a while ago, I would really like to see it happen. I would recommend just getting rid of telling what type of deck you are playing, or run it either like a regular tournament. Also a longer list than just the staff, I know there are various players on this site who are just as good, if not better player than some of the staff members.

I'd totally be a part of this tournament idea we're throwing around. We dont really have many tournaments TCG wise, and the few have, they are either too short, too scarce, or too long. Mini Cup took like 3 months? It was really really long, lol.

Definitely would support that tournament :)

I like the idea of the member-mod tournament. I might do that for Mini Cup 2. It was about time to start that anyway.

We could see if Muddy68 wants to do it, then the two contributors would make 10. We could have 20 members participate, and each mod plays two members. After a mod or member loses twice, they are eliminated. Therefore, members are given a huge advantage, and it should be fun. Once we start getting uneven numbers, the mods will choose which of them play 2 members, and which play 3 (if they're doing badly.) Or they choose which play one member and which play two (when if they're doing well.) How does this sound?

Yeah, that sounds just about right. That would totally be an awesome way to do Mini Cup 2 :)

For members, it'd be first come first serve, correct?
